Philander eyes South Africa comeback as return gathers pace

Vernon Philander made a successful return to franchise cricket after more than four months out of action and is targeting more competitive action over the South African winter in the hope of an international recall

Firdose Moonda31-Mar-2016Vernon Philander made a successful return to franchise cricket after more than four months out of action and is targeting more competitive action over the South African winter in the hope of an international recall.Philander, who tore ankle ligaments during South Africa’s Test tour of India in November, played a club match earlier this month followed by an outing for Western Province in the three-day amateur competition below franchise level and will be available for the end of Cape Cobras’ domestic season before searching for a county offer.”The plan is for Vernon to play the two first-class matches at home and then maybe look to go over to the UK for a period of time to play there,” Arthur Turner, Philander’s agent told ESPNcricinfo. “He wants to make sure he gets game time.”On his comeback for Cobras against Dolphins, Philander seemed his old self: miserly and menacing under some morning cloud. He shared the new ball with Wayne Parnell, who overshadowed him with a seven-wicket haul, but Philander helped apply the pressure. He claimed the second wicket, that of Dolphins’ captain Imran Khan, and bowled 11 overs at an economy of 1.81, the lowest on the day to remind South Africa of the discipline they have lacked. At the recent World T20, South Africa’s bowlers leaked extras and conceded 36 runs in wides. His only T20Is came back in 2007 so a return in that format would appear unlikely, but he may be considered for South Africa’s next assignment, an ODI tri-series in the West Indies in June which also includes Australia.Philander has been part of South Africa’s one-day plans as recently as the 2015 World Cup and Turner said he is “hopeful of being picked again in the near future.” If Philander is overlooked for the trip to the West Indies he would almost certainly come into contention for the home August Tests against New Zealand and will want to have overs under the belt before then. With no IPL or CPL deal, Philander’s best chance of playing will be on the county circuit, where he most recently represented Nottinghamshire in the 2015 season but Turner said he will not rule out any other playing possibilities. “If something comes up somewhere, Vernon will definitely consider it because he wants to play now that he is fit. He worked very hard to get himself back to playing. He always knew that the injury would heal but it took longer than expected,” Turner said. When Philander was injured in November, it was estimated he would recover by mid-January in time to play in two of the Tests against England. But Philander did not play any cricket until two months after that and Turner said, “once the international season was over and he could see he wasn’t going to play, he gave it as much time as he could to make sure there will no problems in future.”South Africa were also without Dale Steyn for six of the eight Tests against India and England, and the combined loss of bowling experience was one of the reasons Russell Domingo cited as one of the reasons for their back to back series defeats. “We probably didn’t have the strike power that we wanted with a few injuries with guys like Dale and Vernon not playing. That was a big loss,” Domingo said. That does not mean Philander will be able to walk back into the Test XI. In his absence, 20-year-old quick Kagiso Rabada emerged and South Africa will now need to look at which quicks they want to use in which format.

Why Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister was falling asleep in Jurgen Klopp's pre-match tactical briefing ahead of Man City clash

The Reds dragged themselves back into Saturday's encounter with a determined display to take a draw which opens up the Premier League title race. Liverpool trailed to Erling Haaland's first-half strike but held on despite an uncharacteristically nervous performance from goalkeeper Alisson to level late on with Trent Alexander-Arnold's arrowed strike. After the game, Mac Allister lifted the lid on some of the exhaustion felt among the squad, many of whom returned late in the week after a gruelling return trip to South America.

"Honestly, it is so hard to play like this," Mac Allister told LFC TV after the match. "Yesterday we were in a meeting talking about Man City and the way we wanted to play, and I couldn't keep my eyes open.

"It's very tough. Jet lag, long trip, but it is what it is. We like playing football, it's what we want, to win, and that's why we did our best. It was a very tough game for us. It's what we expected, they are a very good team, but I think it was a fair result. They had most of the possession but they didn't have many chances."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mac Allister played all 90 minutes of Argentina's historic win over Brazil at the Maracana on Tuesday night. Transatlantic trips for qualifying double-headers for the Premier League's South American stars is nothing new. But this season has proved particularly gruelling for the Liverpool contingent who have been selected to play in the Saturday lunchtime television slot after all three international breaks, much to the dismay of Klopp. With two wins and a creditable draw at the Etihad to show for those fixtures, Liverpool will feel relieved, but the situation is far from ideal in an increasingly-packed football calendar.

Film actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney surprisingly purchased Wrexham AFC, one of the oldest teams in the world in November 2022. The Red Dragons' recent success has captured the attention of the locals, who acknowledge that there are drawbacks to their new-found success. If they can continue their upward trajectory, they could make it back-to-back promotions as they look to make it to the Premier League for the first time in their history.

WHAT THE LOCALS SAID

"It's a bit of a nightmare on match days with the traffic and parking. You become a prisoner in your own home," local resident Richard Hughes told the tabloid. "But some fans park where they shouldn't and block your drives or take your parking spot. I've seen one fight over parking. There was a lot of shouting and pushing and shouting and a few punches thrown. It was crazy."

Lifelong fan Frank Harry added: "I love living close to the ground and the club is in a great position. It’s very exciting. There is a problem with the traffic, mind. I have seen people rowing over parking spots on match days with some fans parking right by people’s houses where they shouldn’t. But I love it here. I go home and away."

Amin and Khurram Manzoor provided the guts of the visitor’s effort, putting on 135 for the second wicket after Umar Siddiq had fallen early. Manzoor hit 82 off 128 balls before being given out lbw to offspinner Tharindu Kaushal.Amin was involved in a 51-run stand with Ali Asad after Manzoor’s departure, but was out on the brink of what would have been his 11th first-class ton. Kaushal claimed his wicket as well. There was little else of note in Pakistan’s batting card. Siddiq and Ali Asad made only minor contributions, and Ali Waqas was out for a duck. The two offspinners – Kaushal and Dhananjaya de Silva – took two wickets apiece. De Silva returned the day’s best figures of 2 for 28 from 13 overs.

Palmer revealed shrug celebration against Man CityWas not nervous before facing former clubEarned maiden national team call-upWHAT HAPPENED?

The Chelsea star revealed how he came up with the shrug celebration after scoring the last-gasp equaliser against Manchester City last weekend. The 21-year-old further suggested that he did not really think about his former club – where he spent a total of 15 years while making his way through the youth ranks – after netting the all-important goal.

It was Palmer's fourth top-flight goal for the Blues since joining them on the transfer deadline day, and incidentally, all of those have been from penalties.

Right after the City clash, the striker got his maiden senior national team call-up as Gareth Southgate included him in the Three Lions squad for their upcoming Euro 2024 qualifying game.

WHAT DID COLE PALMER SAY?

Speaking to reporters, the Chelsea forward said: "I spent 15 years at the club. I can’t really go and celebrate how I would usually celebrate if I have scored a 95th minute equaliser because it would have been disrespectful. So I just decided to do a shrug. I don’t know why."

He added: "When I saw the ref give it I thought: 'It’s my time'. I spoke to Raz [Raheem Sterling] and he said: ‘What’s happening?’ and I was like: 'I wanna take it'. He was like 'Fine' and when I put the ball down I just picked a spot and tried to put it there. I felt I was waiting for a while to take it. So I did think about my old club and stuff but after that not really. It was a crazy game. I did feel a bit nervous before and it felt a bit weird to see everyone from my own club. I had been there for 15 years. But when the game started it felt normal and it was a good game."

Notts capable of further glory

ESPNcricinfo considers Nottinghamshire’s prospects for the 2014 season

David Hopps31-Mar-2014Nottinghamshire
Last year 7th, CC Div 1; QF, FLt20; Champions, YB40.2013 in a nutshell
Promise finally turned into fulfilment for Nottinghamshire in 2013. They won their first piece of Lord’s silverware since 1989 when they dispensed with Glamorgan in the final of YB40 at Lord’s. The demolition of Somerset in the semifinal showed the prowess of the team, and once their England pair, Graeme Swann and Stuart Broad, were made available for the final, their extra firepower was doubly apparent, even if it took a 99-run stand between Chris Read and David Hussey to remove their jitters. A captain given to repeated rescue acts joining forces with a long-serving overseas player about to end his 10-year association with the county: it was an appropriate alliance.Delight at taking the YB40 trophy made up for the shock of a heavy defeat at Trent Bridge against Essex in the Twenty20 quarterfinal. It was in this competition where Notts seemed most likely to strut their stuff, but they suffered a third consecutive quarterfinal defeat after conceding their highest total of the season and then succumbing to a hat-triuck by Shaun Tait.A squad increasingly devised for limited-overs cricket was unimpressive in the Championship. A dismal display against Durham handed the hosts the Championship trophy at Chester-le-Street and plunged Notts into a late relegation battle with their closest rivals Derbyshire. Hussey’s farewell against Somerset ensured they survived, but they deserved to do so sheepishly.Michael Lumb, James Taylor and Samit Patel with the bat and Luke Fletcher and Harry Gurney with the ball had decent Championship seasons, but there was little else to admire. The lack of a frontline spinner was a glaring weakness. Alex Hales’ Championship average of 14 after he was refused the chance to play IPL questioned both his aptitude and appetite for long-form cricket.2014 prospects
Notts can anticipate a decent season. They should press in both limited-overs competitions and should not dice with relegation to the extent they did last season. They have long established themselves as the powerful force in the East Midlands, thanks to intelligent development of Trent Bridge and shrewd use of cricket’s low-key transfer market and that is not about to change.Crucially, they have switched to an overseas bowler this season, and an indefatigable one, too, in the Australian Peter Siddle. That is a sensible switch of emphasis as their bowling attack has long been overly reliant on Andre Adams whose first-class career must be reaching an end. Andy Pick has other good material to work with: a fit Luke Fletcher can make a robust contribution and Harry Gurney is a left-armer with a growing reputation, enough to get him a guest spot on England’s one-day tour of the West Indies. The departure of David Hussey puts more pressure on the batting, and it leaves the onus on Alex Hales, in particular, to pay more serious attention to his technique and work to establish himself as an adaptable cricketer in all formats. An experimental move down the order in Championship cricket might be worth considering.Key player
Michael Lumb lifted Notts’ spirits by quelling talk that he might turn freelance and committing his future to the county, stating: “I’ve played in the IPL and I feel as though I’ve ticked that off my list. If Lumb can have a late flowering in county cricket, and solve at least half of Notts’ perennial issues at the top of the order in the Championship, that is half the problem solved. If he can carry Hales with him, even better, although Trent Bridge’s demanding batting conditions make that far from automatic.Bright young thing
Harry Gurney’s reputation began to blossom in 2013 when he finished the Championship season as Nottinghamshire’s leading wicket-taker, taking 44 wickets at 30, enough to catch the eye of the England management who invited him to pre-Ashes nets along with another left-arm quick, Tymal Mills, to prepare England for an expected onslaught from Mitchell Johnson. If that did not work our so well, the bowler himself is capable of more good things.Captain/coach
Chris Read retains the captaincy in the Championship, but there is a new face in charge in one-day cricket – James Taylor, a rueful admission perhaps that his attempts to force his way into England’s Test side have so far been largely unsuccessful. Mick Newell remains as coach, but the most intriguing addition to the coaching staff comes in the formidable figure of Andy Pick, who returns as bowling coach after an unedifying experience as high performance manager for the USA Cricket Association.ESPNcricinfo verdict
Notts are capable of reaching at least one-day final and are capable of some entertaining cricket in the Championship which can carry them into the top half of the table. If the signing of Siddle can be allied to improvements from the rest of the attack under Pick’s tutelage, there could be plenty of smiles at Trent Bridge. Just don’t give them too many slow turners.

Working on increasing pace – Sandeep

IPL newsfile on May 9, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff09-May-2014Working on increasing pace – Sandeep
Kings XI Punjab seamer Sandeep Sharma has said he is working on increasing his pace, which will complement his impressive swing that has troubled some of the best batsmen in the IPL. Sandeep, 20, has ten wickets in five games this season, including two consecutive three-wicket hauls.”I was bowling around 125 kmph last year but now I am consistently hitting the 130 mark,” Sandeep told . “My pace has increased and I will continue to work in this direction. My pace will definitely increase as I have age on my side. The bones and muscles will only get stronger. In my interactions with the coaches, I have learnt that no matter how good the batsman is, he will struggle against the swinging ball.”Sandeep said he had learnt by observing Dale Steyn that a bowler needs to crank up the pace a bit more when the ball gets older and stops swinging. “When he (Steyn) operates with the new ball, he bowls around 135-137 and as it gets older he picks up speed. It is with the old ball that I will look to get extra yards because the ball doesn’t swing and one has to get the yorkers and bouncers right at that stage.”When asked about his interactions with his team-mates, Sandeep said Mitchell Johnson has been helping him with the mental aspects of the game, while Virender Sehwag has helped him plan against opposition batsmen. “He (Sehwag) helps me read the wicket and informs how it has behaved in the past. He also helps me plan for a particular batsman, by discussing their strengths and weaknesses.”Batsmen not converting starts – Albie Morkel
Royal Challengers Bangalore allrounder Albie Morkel has said his team’s main batsmen would have to step up and make bigger scores in order to rise from their current position at No.5. In seven games, RCB have had only three half-centuries – from AB de Villiers, Parthiv Patel and Yuvraj Singh – while the captain Virat Kohli has a highest of 49*. Chris Gayle has not carried on after making starts in three innings so far.”Most of our batsmen got good starts. But we didn’t convert,” Morkel said on the eve of Royal Challengers’ home game against Kings XI Punjab. “The best innings was of AB who hit 89. And if you want to win T20 games, out of top five-six batsmen, one has to go out and score a big one. Thirties and 40s can win you games on occasions.”Royal Challengers play their next three games at home and Morkel was confident the side would fulfill the expectation of winning at least five of the next seven games to qualify for the playoffs. “It is a blessing in disguise to play three matches (in Bangalore),” Morkel said. “We haven’t yet peaked. Hopefully, that happens tomorrow. We all know Virat Kohli is a feisty character and he will be up for it.”Enjoying bowling with Steyn – Bhuvneshwar
Sunrisers Hyderabad seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar has said he is enjoying sharing the new ball with Dale Steyn and that his interactions with the South African have helped him improve as a bowler. Bhuvneshwar is currently tied with Mohit Sharma on top of the IPL wicket charts with 14. He has been one of the most impressive Indian bowlers this season, troubling batsmen with his swing with the new ball and maintaining an impressive economy rate of 5.45.”He (Steyn) is the one who always talks and shares experiences regarding the different situations in a match. Bowling at the death has been great as of now. I am glad I have been taking wickets and have been economical at the same time,” Bhuvneshwar told .Bhuvneshwar said that patience is key for a bowler, irrespective of the format. “It (patience) is the key while bowling in different situations. And as a bowler, there will be days when you go for runs and don’t get any wickets. But one needs to realise that patience pays off, and with time, it will get you results. I feel a bowler should learn to be patient come what may.”
