In Focus: Pulisic potential is worth investing in this summer

As reported by The Telegraph, Manchester United are interested in signing Borussia Dortmund talent Christian Pulisic this summer.

What’s the story?

While most of the transfer headlines this January are being generated by deals set to be concluded this month, the biggest clubs in the world always plan ahead and Manchester United are no different.

The Telegraph say that the Red Devils are ready to compete with Liverpool for USA international Christian Pulisic this summer.

The paper reckon that the teenager’s talent and commercial value make him an attractive proposition to United and they don’t want him in the hands of their arch Premier League rivals.

Is he the right kind of player Jose Mourinho should be moving for at the end of the season?

Potential superstar

Rated at £40.5m by Transfermarkt and with his contract at the Bundesliga side not running out until 2020, any move for Pulisic would not be cheap, but the rewards could be great given his age, nationality and potential.

With growing interest in football in the USA, he could become one of the first true superstars to emerge from the country, making him a hugely attractive proposition for commercial savvy clubs.

On the pitch he’s showing plenty of progress too, becoming a regular for Borussia Dortmund over the last couple of the seasons, scoring 11 and assisting 14 in 78 appearances.

While not the most impressive return in comparison to the elite around Europe, he still just 19, learning the game and can find consistency in time.

Investing in his future early is a valid strategy and it’ll be interesting to see whether Manchester United follow up their reported interest this summer.

In Focus: Sanchez signing would show Liverpool are ready to seriously challenge

As reported by The Mirror, Liverpool are ready to enter the race to sign Arsenal superstar Alexis Sanchez during this month’s transfer window.

What’s the story?

Sanchez has been heavily linked with Manchester United and Manchester City in recent weeks, with his contract at the Gunners due to expire at the end of the season.

The Chilean seems destined to finally leave the Emirates and the queue to sign him appears to be building.

The Mirror report that Liverpool would have no qualms with meeting Arsenal’s £35m valuation of the attacker after the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona.

The paper say the biggest barrier would be matching the £300,000-a-week wages Man United are willing to pay the Arsenal man, although the Reds are prepared to spend big to ensure they challenge for silverware.

Is this move likely?

While the report from The Mirror has only emerged this weekend, it’s looking increasingly likely that Sanchez will end up at Manchester United in the coming week, with reports mounting that they are close to making a vital breakthrough.

However, if Liverpool can possibly gatecrash negotiations between United and Arsenal then securing the former Barcelona man would obviously be a huge signing.

Jurgen Klopp already has a host of attacking talents at his disposal but Sanchez could provide a contribution that takes them to the next level and allow them to challenge for the title next season.

With midfielder Naby Keita joining in the summer and Virgil van Dijk signing this January, it’s clear that Liverpool are showing ambition to get to that level and signing the Arsenal man would be a huge step forward.

Mario makes West Ham United debut in FA Cup defeat, fans react

West Ham United fans got their first glimpse of new signing Joao Mario this afternoon.

The Portuguese midfielder joined the Hammers earlier this week on a loan deal from Inter Milan until the end of the season.

Some supporters may have felt that the 25-year-old would be eased into today’s FA Cup fourth-round match against Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

However, it was not a debut to remember for Mario as the team suffered a surprise 2-0 loss to the League One leaders.

Not only did David Moyes’s side lose the game, they are facing a spell without Pedro Obiang after he was stretchered off with an injury, while Arthur Masuaku is facing a ban after getting sent off for spitting at an opponent.

Mario was introduced at the start of the second half, replacing Pablo Zabaleta, but the midfielder was unable to help the team get back into the game.

The overwhelming reaction to Mario’s debut from West Ham fans was one of sympathy for the new player.

HYS: Stoke City fans, are you happy with your club’s January transfer window?

Facing relegation and a search for a new manager, Stoke City knew action had to be taken during the January transfer window.

Either side of appointing Paul Lambert as Mark Hughes’ successor, the Potters swooped for right-back Moritz Bauer – who has since played in all four of Stoke’s Premier League fixtures – and powerful midfielder Badou Ndiaye, who provided an assist upon his debut against Bournemouth last weekend.

That, in addition to a loan deal for left-back Konstantinos Stafylidis, saw Stoke commit to an overall net spend of £20.52million last month according to Transfermarkt.

But some would argue Stoke didn’t address all of their issues in January. The Potters are still short of dependable firepower in the final third, their joint-top scorers Mame Biram Diouf and Xherdan Shaqiri netting just five times each in the Premier League this season, but failed to bring in another striker.

So, Stoke City fans, are you happy with your club’s efforts in the transfer market last month? Let us know by voting below…

Southampton fans are looking for more from Carrillo after initial appearances

Southampton will face Manchester City or Wigan in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after successfully navigating a tricky tie away to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

With English Premier League action causing supporters anxiety, the cup has been a welcome change of scenery for Southampton and the win against the Baggies means this is the furthest they’ve gone in the competition since 2005.

Wesley Hoedt and Dusan Tadic were the goal heroes on the afternoon, ensuring progression despite Salomon Rondon’s stunning volley for the home side.

It was also another opportunity to see new striker Guido Carrillo in action after he joined the club from Monaco in January.

The Argentinian has started just three matches but fans are already coming to judgements on how he’s fitting in with life at St Mary’s.

Yet to score, some fans are questioning whether he was the smartest buy.

Others though have been quick to rush to the striker’s defence, given it is so early in his Saints career, believing that he is showing promise spearheading Mauricio Pellegrino’s attack.

There’s also the suggestion that every striker looks isolated in the Southampton team right now.

Can the 26-year-old become the striker that every supporter is hoping for?

Arsenal should aim higher than Bernd Leno for their number one spot

As reported by The Daily Mail, Arsenal are interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno this summer as their number one choice to replace Petr Cech.

What’s the story?

Cech has had an immensely difficult season between the sticks for the Gunners, most recently at fault for two goals in their defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.

That performance has led to more questions about his long-term future at the club, becoming clear they need a new competitor for the number one spot at the Emirates.

One contender for that spot could be Bernd Leno, according to The Daily Mail, who report that Arsenal head of recruitment Sven Mislintat is a huge fan of the Bayer Leverkusen shot-stopper.

The paper say that the Gunners will try to sign the Germany international this summer.

Rated at £12.6m by Tranfermarkt, does he offer the quality that Arsenal need to improve upon Cech?

[ad_pod ]

Good enough?

Leno has had an accomplished career at Leverkusen, making an impressive 295 appearances for the club already at the age of 26.

That consistency in appearances has earned him plaudits in Germany, taking mental and physical strength to compete week in, week out at that level.

His last two season have been difficult though, keeping just six clean sheets in the Bundesliga last year and conceding 55 goals and this term conceding 33 already and keeping just 7 clean sheets.

Definitely a goalkeeper who has a mistake in his game too, perhaps he isn’t the surefire solution to Arsenal’s goalkeeping problems that you might think.

With plenty of young, upcoming goalkeepers around Europe, Arsenal could probably do better than the Germany cap, even if they would be more expensive to bring to London.

Arsenal fans desperate for Wenger to be sacked immediately

The ‘Arsene Wenger out’ parade has been in full force for some time, with some Arsenal fans staging protests last season against the manager.

The Frenchman has been in charge of the North London outfit for the past two decades, and now a large majority of the fanbase think that it is time for a change.

Despite the unrest last season, Wenger ended up signing a new two-year deal, but he has failed to win over some of the supporters.

The knives were sharpened after Sunday’s Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City at Wembley.

Wenger’s team were unable to pose any sort of threat against Pep Guardiola’s side, who comfortably sealed a 3-0 triumph.

As well as limping out of the cup final, Arsenal are in serious danger of failing to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

As it stands, the Gunners are sixth in the Premier League table, 10 points adrift of the top four.

In reaction to a handful of posts on Arsenal’s official Twitter page, fans made it very clear that they want Wenger to be shown the door.

Leeds fans delighted with news Peacock-Farrell is number one

Leeds fans are impressed by Bailey Peacock-Farrell’s start to life in the first team, but slightly less impressed with manager Paul Heckingbottom’s choice of words for the young goalkeeper.

Peacock-Farrell has had a turbulent time trying to find his way into the Leeds first team. Having signed in 2015, the 21 year-old goalkeeper had trials with League One Oldham Athletic and Swedish side Landskrona BoIS, both of which decided not to keep the youngster on loan.

After a shaky loan spell at York City, Peacock-Farrell found himself thrust into the first team in the 3-0 defeat vs. Wolves last week, and made several good saves in a busy return to action. He continued his form into the weekend, helping Leeds break their rut with a 2-2 draw at struggling Reading.

Heckingbottom says the shirt is now Peacock-Farrell’s to lose.

“He’s got goalkeepers breathing down his neck, but the players know I’m fair with that and he’s in the driving seat,” the manager told the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“He was better than he was against Wolves. I was really pleased with him on the pitch against Wolves because his demeanour impressed me. If I’m critical he should have stayed at home for the third goal, which he knows, but he’d already made some big saves before that.

“Today he made saves when he had to make saves. His kicking was good and his handling was good.”

Leeds fans are mostly happy with the young stopper’s start in the first team, especially considering the injury to Andy Lonergan and awful form of Felix Wiedwald. Still, some fans are not pleased with the manager’s comments on the goalkeeping situation.

Some of the best Twitter reactions can be found below…

HYS: Is Danny Ings the striker Newcastle need?

It is easy to forget how impressive Danny Ings was during his debut Premier League campaign.

In the 2014-15 season, with Burnley, Ings scored 11 goals from 35 league matches, but despite that, he was unable to keep afloat a Clarets side that simply hadn’t been invested in sufficiently.

He was hot property that summer as his Turfmoor contract ran down and Liverpool got what was regarded as a decent deal at the time, for a young English striker who had scored goals in the top flight.

[ad_pod ]

Yet, as the frontman valued at £7.2m by Transfermarkt approaches the end of his third season at Anfield, his career has stalled due to a bout of horrible injuries and the changing face of the Reds attack in his absence.

If he is fit, a summer move looks all but inevitable and Newcastle United were one side who reportedly showed a loan interest in January, so they may come back again.

The Magpies have struggled for goals this season but if Rafa Benitez went into next term with Dwight Gayle, a revitalised Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ings at his disposal, surely that would change?

Well, that’s what we’re asking you; would the former Burnley man be a good fit in the North East? Let us know by voting in the poll below…

Liverpool fans did not enjoy Jordan Henderson’s performance vs Everton

A rotated Liverpool side could only manage a draw in the English Premier League on Saturday, playing out a 0-0 stalemate with city rivals Everton in the Merseyside Derby.

With all eyes on Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg with Manchester City, yesterday’s match was something of a distraction for Jurgen Klopp, reflected with five changes made to his starting eleven.

The performance suffered as a result, especially in attack, with the Reds failing to create as many chances or be as clinical in front of goal with the likes of Mohamed Salah not in the side.

Some regular starters did play though. Jordan Henderson was one, but fans didn’t enjoy his display, criticising the midfielder for ponderous forward play that left them frustrated.

The Liverpool captain is suspended for the upcoming City clash, so the supporters disappointed with his weekend performance will get a reprieve mid-week, but will his absence be a detriment to their performance at the Etihad?

Fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts…
