Liverpool struck gold on Andy Robertson

Jurgen Klopp’s biggest strength over the previous few years at Liverpool has been his diligence in the transfer market, shipping out unwanted deadwood and bringing in stronger and younger replacements.

Signing Alisson to replace Loris Karius is a prime example of a strategy that has paid off so well in recent years, with the Anfield side winning Premier League and Champions League titles amongst other honours.

It was a signing that the German made in 2017 that might just be one of his finest, especially in terms of value for money over the duration of his contract…

Robertson is one of Klopp’s finest signings

The Scotsman arrived at Anfield for a £10m transfer fee from Hull City after a three-year spell. With the left back plying his trade for amateur side Queen’s Park in the Scottish fourth tier just five years before, it was a remarkable rise through the game, and this was only the beginning.

His first season on Merseyside saw him earn a Champions League runners-up medal and this would give him all the motivation required for the success ahead.

Robertson has since played 183 matches for Liverpool, missing just 13 Premier League games in that time as he has established himself as one of the greatest left-backs on the continent.

The 28-year-old has won all domestic honours south of the border, completing his collection with FA and League Cup winners medals last season, while adding Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup titles just for good measure.

His influence in Klopp’s side has been key to their success, with teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold lavishing praise on the player last season by calling him “outstanding” and considering his growth since joining in 2017, this statement is certainly justified.

A fee of just £10m seems like an incredible bargain, especially when the CIES Football Observatory now values him at €50m (£43.5m), meaning he is worth a staggering 335% more now than when Liverpool signed him.

While he is arguably at the peak of his powers, Klopp is unlikely to sell him. If he did, however, there is no doubt the fee would rise north of £50m, ensuring the Reds made a lavish profit.

Wolves can find their next gem in Tipton

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ defeat to Crystal Palace on Tuesday evening saw promising defender Hugo Bueno impress on what was his full debut for the Midlands side, with the young Spaniard having been a real shining light despite the overall disappointment on the night.

The 20-year-old’s “superb” performance – as described by journalist Nathan Judah – saw the exciting full-back tee up compatriot Adama Traore with a stunning whipped cross to fire the visitors ahead at Selhurst Park, having only made his first senior outing just a few days earlier against Nottingham Forest.

On the same night as the left-back showcased his talent on the Premier League stage, the club’s U21 side were also in action in the EFL Trophy away at Port Vale, with that encounter showcasing that there are further academy assets just waiting to be unleashed in the first-team.

Despite their eventual defeat to the League One outfit, Wolves’ exciting crop of youngsters – who had already qualified for the knockout stages – certainly put up a good fight against Darrell Clarke’s side, with centre-back and captain Ollie Tipton having been particularly stoic at the heart of the defence.

The 19-year-old – who is still waiting for a chance in the senior set-up – seemingly did all he could to try and keep out the home side on the night, having recorded a remarkable haul of 14 clearances, while also making three blocks and winning 100% of his aerial duels.

The exciting Englishman – who can also feature in a defensive midfield berth – has been a crucial asset for the club in the competition thus far, with his average match rating of 7.03, as per SofaScore, the sixth-highest among his teammates.

Tipton had also previously stood out at U18 level as he scored ten goals and provided one assist in 47 games in all competitions, with all the signs pointing to a player who could well join the likes of the aforementioned Bueno, Chem Campbell and Joe Hodge in making his mark on the first-team.

The local lad has previously been lauded for his quality and commitment by technical director Scott Sellars, who said of the defender’s talents back in December 2020:

“We’ve been assessing Oliver’s progress since he was 11, so to see a local boy’s growth through the Academy is great. We’re really proud of his development over the years and the work he’s put in to get himself to this stage, and this contract is a reward for that commitment.

“He’s very focused and has a very professional attitude for a young boy, who shows every day a real consistency in his work ethic and trying to improve. He’s been a captain a lot from a young age, and shows very good leadership skills, but he’s got an extremely focused mentality and is a young man who is really keen to progress and learn.”

The defensive ranks have been somewhat depleted over the summer following the departures of the likes of Romain Saiss, Willy Boly and Conor Coady, so there could well be a chance for Tipton to make his mark for Wolves sooner rather than later, with the Old Gold having the potential to unearth their next big thing in the teenage talent.

Quetta Gladiators picked Sussex’s rising sensation Jofra Archer as a replacement for allrounder Carlos Brathwaite who will miss the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and will instead play for West Indies in the World Cup qualifiers in March. Archer’s Sussex team-mate Tymal Mills was roped in by Karachi Kings in place of former Australia quick Mitchell Johnson, who had pulled out of the tournament, citing personal reasons. In a replacement draft held in Lahore on Monday, all six franchises tweaked their roster, replacing players unavailable for various reasons ahead of the third edition of the league, scheduled to be played from February 22. Only five players who had been originally drafted in will miss the tournament in its entirety – Johnson, Brathwaite, Luke Wright, Angelo Mathews and Colin Munro. The other replacement players have been brought in as cover for players who are partially available. Two days after being picked up by Rajasthan Royals for USD 1.125 million in the IPL auction, Archer grabbed the spotlight again. A 22-year old allrounder from Barbados who plies his trade at Sussex, Archer extended his county form into the Bangladesh Premier League and then the Big Bash League. He claimed a double-wicket maiden on BBL debut for Hobart Hurricanes and continued to impress with his rapid pace. In addition, he has a strike-rate of 143.93 with the bat, which makes him an exciting prospect.England opener Luke Wright, meanwhile, pulled out of the PSL because of fitness concerns. Wright had played for Quetta in the first two seasons, before being selected by Karachi this season. They replaced him with another England opener in Joe Denly who was the top scorer in the Natwest T20 Blast in 2017 and later went on to play for Dhaka Dynamites in the BPL and the Hurricanes in the BBL.”Sadly I’ve had to pull out of the PSL this year,” Wright tweeted. “I’ve been carrying niggles all winter and they aren’t getting better so, to be fair to both Karachi Kings and Sussex, I respectfully have to miss it. Great tournament. Hope to play in it next year.”SLC denied a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to Mathews, forcing Lahore Qalandars to pick New Zealand’s Anton Devcich instead. Lahore also drafted in West Indies wicketkeeper-batsman Denesh Ramdin to replace Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman, who will be available for a few games before joining the Bangladesh side. Islamabad United brought in Sri Lanka allrounder Asela Gunaratne, England quick Steven Finn and West Indies batsman Chadwick Walton to replace JP Duminy, David Willey and Alex Hales.”We brought in an extra keeper (Ramdin) as back up for Umar Akmal, in case we want to play Umar as batsman only,” a Lahore Qalandars spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo. “We had originally picked Mitchell McClenaghan to fill in for Mustafizur’s absence, so we have an extra fast bowler if we need one.”Bangladesh’s Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan – who are both part of defending champions Peshawar Zalmi’s squad – will also only be available for the first four games of the tournament. They will then join the national team for a tri-series that also involves Sri Lanka and India. Quetta’s Mahmudullah, also unavailable for the same reason, was replaced by Australia fast bowler John Hastings. Peshawar also brought in Dwayne Smith and Liam Dawson as cover.

A tendência, agora, é melhorar gradativamente.

Você vê o volume, a intensidade. A gente cresceu bastante.

Rangers struck gold by selling £2.5m dud with fewer goals than Dessers in 23/24

Glasgow Rangers went through a summer of change as former head coach Michael Beale was allowed to make widespread alterations to his playing squad.

The likes of Allan McGregor, Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos, and Scott Arfield were allowed to leave on free transfers, whilst Antonio Colak and Glen Kamara, among others, were sold by the Scottish giants.

These exits allowed the English tactician to dip into the market to make nine new additions of his own to improve his side for the 2023/24 campaign.

Leon Balogun, Sam Lammers, Cyriel Dessers, Danilo, Jose Cifuentes, Kieran Dowell, Dujon Sterling, and Jack Butland all arrived on permanent deals, alongside a loan swoop for Brighton & Hove Albion forward Abdallah Sima.

Rangers striker Danilo.

Beale's recruitment did not provide him with the desired results to keep the board happy, though, as he was relieved of his duties last month and replaced by Belgian boss Philippe Clement.

However, not all of the ex-Gers assistant's moves in the transfer window were complete failures. One decision that already looks to have been a smart one is the sale of Colak to Italian side Parma, as the striker has struggled to find his form in front of goal this season.

Colak's goal record for Rangers

The Croatia international arrived at Ibrox from Greek giants PAOK in the summer of 2022 under Giovanni van Bronckhorst's management and had a mixed year in Scotland.

Colak hit the ground running for the Light Blues with a superb return of 14 goals and three assists in 24 competitive appearances for the Dutch head coach, which is a return of more than one goal every other game on average.

His form, however, dipped after Beale arrived during the break for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The experienced marksman only scored four goals and provided one assist in 15 matches under the English tactician's guidance.

He also failed to perform in Europe as his six Champions League appearances did not leave a positive impression. The lightweight lost a staggering 74% of his duels and failed to provide a single goal or assist in the competition, with two 'big chances' missed for the centre-forward.

Overall, though, Colak ended the 2022/23 campaign with an impressive record in the Scottish Premiership. He recorded 14 goals and one assist in 18 league starts for Rangers, although ten of those came within the first nine games of the term.

This shows that the Croatian finisher came flying out of the blocks as a clinical and lethal goalscorer for the Gers but was unable to sustain it throughout the remainder of the season.

He struggled badly under Beale, as evidenced by his return of one goal every 3.75 outings, and his lack of form in front of goal made his sale earlier this year a reasonable one.

Colak's goal record for Parma

The Croatia international was ditched by Beale over the summer as Serie B side Parma swooped in to secure his services for a reported fee of £2.5m.

Rangers' then-boss hailed the number nine's class and how he handled the situation – referencing his decision to speak with the players and staff to say his goodbyes during pre-season with no bad feelings on either side.

It was, therefore, an amicable split that suited both parties. Colak was able to leave and find a new club after struggling during the second half of the 2022/23 campaign and the Light Blues were able to rake in a sizeable fee for a player who had been underperforming in the months leading up to the window.

Former Rangers striker Antonio Colak.

His woes have, unfortunately, continued in Italy as the 30-year-old dynamo has only scored three goals in 11 Serie B matches and has failed to establish himself as a regular starter for his side.

The ex-Rangers striker has only started three league games for the second division outfit and has struggled to deal with the physicality of the league, with a dismal duel success rate of 25%.

These statistics show that the former Malmo star has not offered a consistent attacking threat and has been bullied by opposition defenders, who have found it far too easy to get the better of him in physical contests.

His struggles throughout the 2023/24 campaign so far are emphasised by the fact that he has scored fewer goals than current Rangers striker Dessers, who has done little to impress since his move to Ibrox.

Dessers' goal record for Rangers

The Light Blues snapped up the Nigeria international from Italian side Cremonese for an initial fee of €5m (£4.3m), per journalist Fabrizio Romano, to bolster their attacking options.

However, the 28-year-old dud has not been able to provide a reliable presence at the top end of the pitch for the Scottish giants with his weak hold-up play and inconsistent finishing.

Dessers has scored three goals in ten Premiership outings and already missed a staggering ten 'big chances' in front of goal, which shows that he has not been able to make the most of the opportunities that his teammates have been providing him with.

Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers.

The right-footed flop has also lost a whopping 79% of his ground duels in the Scottish top-flight, with opposition players being able to comfortably dominate him on the deck.

His European exploits have also left a lot to be desired as the striker has failed to provide a goal or an assist in three Europa League outings, and has lost 81% of his duels.

However, Dessers did score in the Champions League qualifiers and managed one goal in the League Cup for Rangers earlier this season, which means that he has scored two more goals than Colak at club level during the 2023/24 campaign for their respective clubs.

Overall, Beale struck gold with the decision to sell the Croatia international for £2.5m during the summer transfer window as his woeful form in the second half of last season for Rangers and in the opening months of this term for Parma suggest that he would not have been a good option for Clement.

Colak has been outscored by Dessers and has not been able to start games on a regular basis in the second division of Italian football, which is why the Gers could look back on the fee they received for his services and be happy with their business.

Aston Villa: Unai Emery keen on Eden Hazard

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is reportedly keen on signing Real Madrid forward Eden Hazard.

The Lowdown: Hazard at the Bernabeu

The Belgian winger made the move to the Bernabeu from Chelsea in 2019 but has struggled to live up to his £103m transfer fee.

The 31-year-old has scored only seven goals in 72 games in all competitions, making just three La Liga appearances during the current campaign.

The Belgium international, who was labelled ‘clinical’ by his manager Carlo Ancelotti, is set to enter the final 18 months of his contract in the New Year, and it looks as if Villa could be keen on bringing him back to the Premier League.

The Latest: Villa linked with Hazard

Reports from Spanish media have emerged regarding Villa and Hazard. It has been claimed that Emery will give the green light to a possible deal and that the Villans see the 31-year-old playing a ‘leading role’ as they look to reinforce their attack.

Real Madrid are destined to part ways with Hazard and will hope to receive a ‘reasonable’ fee for the player.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-updates-3/” title=”Aston Villa latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Gamble?

It’s safe to say that Hazard has suffered a dip in his performances in recent years, with 16 separate injuries in his time at Real Madrid playing their part.

Therefore, it could be a gamble by Emery and NSWE to try and sign the forward, and you’d expect that an overall deal would cost a substantial amount when you factor in Hazard’s reported £381,000-per-week wage.

It will be interesting to see if Villa do indeed make their move, and with Hazard set to feature for his country in the World Cup later this month, his displays could be one to watch closely.

Newcastle: Howe must unleash Matt Targett

Newcastle United are back in action at home to Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup this evening, with the Magpies likely hoping to keep their current relentless form going in what is the penultimate game before the World Cup break.

While tonight’s competition may not be the priority for the northeast side – with the club currently firmly in the mix to secure a Champions League berth – manager Eddie Howe is no doubt aware of the club’s ongoing barren run, having last secured silverware back in 1969.

A win over Patrick Vieira’s side would move the Tynesiders another step closer to realising that ambition, although it will prove a tough ask against a side who held the hosts to a goalless draw at St James’ Park earlier this season.

Although it remains to be seen if Howe will rotate his side for that upcoming meeting, one man who could well come back into the side is full-back Matt Targett, with the Englishman having recently lost his place in the starting XI as a result of the form of compatriot Dan Burn.

The latter man had seemingly bolstered his chances of an inclusion in Gareth Southgate’s England squad with a string of fine showings in recent weeks, although the towering defender produced a far more shaky display in front of the Three Lions boss against Southampton last time out.

Despite the eventual 4-1 scoreline, it had not been plain sailing for the visitors at St Mary’s on the day, with Burn no doubt one notable villain having failed to prevent Romain Perraud from netting a consolation having been done far too easily by the Saints man after making a foolish, diving lunge.

It could well be an ideal chance to take the former Brighton and Hove Albion man out of the firing line and start the aforementioned Targett in his place, with the £100k-per-week gem having rarely let his side down since his initial loan move from Aston Villa back in January.

The 27-year-old is arguably a more natural fit at left-back than teammate Burn – who typically operates at centre-back – although is a player who has at times gone “under the radar”, in the words of James Wickham.

The former England U21 international has not started since the draw with Bournemouth back in early September, although tonight’s encounter with the Eagles could well be an opportune time for him to show his worth.

Liverpool urged not to sign Joao Felix

Liverpool should reconsider the idea of signing Atletico Madrid attacker Joao Felix, according to former Scotland striker Frank McAvennie.

The Lowdown: Felix linked with Atletico exit

The Portuguese forward has been regarded as one of the best young attacking players in Europe, moving to Atletico from Benfica in 2019 in a £112.9m move and scoring 32 goals in 128 appearances for the La Liga giants.

Felix has been linked with a move away from his current club in the near future, though, with Manchester United among those thought to be eyeing him up.

Liverpool could also be in the conversation, with a recent report claiming as such.

The Latest: Liverpool urged to avoid Felix move

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie warned the Reds against signing Felix, who he feels would not be an upgrade on Jurgen Klopp’s current attacking options.

The 62-year-old said of the Portugal gem:

“Not for me. For the money that would be involved, his stats are not good enough.

“I do not see him as a Liverpool player. [Mohamed] Salah has been playing more centrally of late and it suits him. I think [Darwin] Nunez is a wonderful talent. He is going to be a top player there for a long time. You have to think that they also have [Luis] Diaz and [Diogo] Jota.

“I do not see where Felix would fit in. I’m not sure he would get a game at Liverpool.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-35/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Slightly overrated?

Felix is undoubtedly a talented player, judging by his transfer fee and previous Golden Boy nomination, but there is a nagging feeling that he isn’t quite reaching his potential, which could mean that Liverpool would be best advised to avoid signing him.

A tally of 32 goals in 128 appearances for Atletico is not great for someone who cost just under £113m, while three goals in 23 caps for Portugal is also a forgettable return.

[freshpress-quiz id=“398089″]

Roy Keane derided Felix as an ‘imposter’ during Euro 2020, making his thoughts clear on him; and given the money that Liverpool would likely have to pay for the 23-year-old, they would be better off looking elsewhere.

It wouldn’t be a disaster if the Reds were to suddenly end up signing the Portugal international, but his stock has seemingly fallen compared to a few years ago and it would feel like a risky acquisition.

Everton eyeing Ange Postecoglou

Everton could have already found their replacement for Frank Lampard, should they call time on his tumultuous reign at Goodison Park…

What’s the latest?

As per Alan Nixon, speaking on his Patreon, Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou is being lined up for the role after concerns have mounted regarding the Toffees’ recent form.

The hierarchy at the club are thought to already be keen on the Australian due to his “straight-talking” nature and the “fast and attractive football” for which he is renowned.

With the 57-year-old also sharing an agent with Lampard, there is already a small link between the manager and the club. Perhaps they could soon act on it to make a swift managerial swap and welcome in the serial winner.

He’s a Lampard upgrade

Although the Chelsea legend still has credit in the bank with the Merseyside club following his heroics last season, recent results have seen fans somewhat question his credibility and ability to lead them back to where they will feel they belong.

Despite a summer of extensive recruitment, where eight major deals were completed, it seems yet to have the desired effect on their league position.

With a far more well-rounded squad than the one last season, Lampard’s current failures are only exacerbated.

This has culminated in their three-game losing streak in all competitions, of which they twice travelled to Bournemouth only to lose by three-goal margins on both occasions.

Meanwhile, Postecoglou once again has his team comfortably atop the Scottish Premiership table, with just one loss and 14 wins so far this campaign.

This aforementioned attractive football has also resulted in an astounding 50 goals scored in just 15 games.

He also earned praise for his work in wrestling back the league title from Rangers as he completed the league and cup double during the 2021/22 season.

Having earned impressive success in Australia previously, in Scotland he has restored the stranglehold Celtic previously had on the division with sensational football and an intelligent recruitment style.

It led Arvind Hickman to label his work at Celtic Park an “incredible job”, lauding the “brilliant decision” made by the club to appoint him.

Boasting far more experience and a clear exciting style of play to be implemented, perhaps Farhad Moshiri could make that same brilliant decision to snatch him for the Merseyside outfit and gain a seismic upgrade on Lampard in the process.

Wolves make Carlos Alcaraz approach

Wolves have reportedly made an approach for Racing Club midfielder Carlos Alcaraz.

The Lowdown: Alcaraz profiled

The 19-year-old can play as a central midfielder, attacking midfielder or right winger. [Transfermarkt]

He has been described as an ‘advanced playmaker’ by talent scout Jacek Kulig and has made 83 senior appearances for his current employers.

The Argentine has contributed to 18 goals during that time, and it looks as if a move to the Premier League could be on the cards in 2023.

The Latest: Wolves linked with Alcaraz

Sport Witness relayed an update from Gazzetta dello Sport regarding Alcaraz.

They claimed that Inter Milan are eyeing the midfielder, before adding that Wolves and FC Porto have ‘recently’ both ‘asked for information’ about the 19-year-old.

The Verdict: One to watch?

Wolves’ new manager Julen Lopetegui is already working on January transfers at Molineux, and it looks as if Alcaraz could be on his list of possible additions.

The youngster already has plenty of first-team experience for his age and could well be a star in the making, with Kulig describing him as ‘one of the biggest talents in Argentina’.

Therefore, a winter swoop could be a shrewd move by Wolves chiefs, who may need to pip the likes of Inter Milan and Porto to the player’s services.
