Chelsea’s 9-pass dud was awful vs City

Chelsea succumbed to a disappointing 1-0 defeat at the hands of the newly crowned Premier League champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in an end-of-season encounter that largely lacked intensity and felt much like a testimonial.

A Pep Guardiola side, fresh from their fifth top-flight title in six years, can be forgiven for their more relaxed attitude given the scintillating football they’ve flaunted on a frighteningly consistent basis over the course of the season.

In a pre-match press conference, Frank Lampard questioned the commitment of some of the squad and felt they should be trying to impress the incoming Mauricio Pochettino, who has agreed a deal to become the new manager.

He said:

“Whatever their motivation is, whether it is to impress an incoming manager, whether to impress another club they might be moving on to if that is the motivation they need then they should take that and use that.”

It was yet another criminally pedestrian display from a side that looks lifeless and demoralised. There were glimpses of hope, predominantly provided through the young Lewis Hall and the experienced Raheem Sterling, but a distinct lack of quality and cutting edge.

One player who failed to repay his boss’ faith was Conor Gallagher, who against a hugely rotated home team, couldn’t make his mark.

How did Conor Gallagher perform vs Man City?

The west Londoners have won just one of their nine top-flight games and the 23-year-old failed to make any impact.

Disappointingly, the Englishman managed just a shocking nine accurate passes and 24 touches, which disappointingly saw him rank below Kepa Arrizabalaga for both metrics.

The £50k-per-week dud failed to register any accurate long balls or crosses, as he appeared painfully off the pace in an underwhelming showing.

Conor-Gallagher

Earlier in the term, Darren Bent described the six-cap international as a “fish out of water” in the Chelsea squad, and it is becoming increasingly hard to formulate an argument to disprove this.

At Crystal Palace, in a far less pressured environment, the midfielder thrived, having registered 11 goal contributions and the highest average rating in the squad, as per WhoScored.

However, his imperious form in South London has drastically failed to translate into any dividends at Stamford Bridge.

Whilst his work rate as an engine room machine cannot be questioned, his alarming lack of technique and quality is a huge hindrance to his development.

In the last transfer window, Everton were reportedly willing to spend up to £45m to bring Gallagher to Goodison Park and Chelsea’s decision to reject this is looking more uncalculated as the uninspiring performances continue.

Kumble reintroduces Wright's 'buddy programme'

In only his first week in the job as India coach, Anil Kumble has already re-introduced one of Wright’s key concepts: a buddy system

Stuart Binny said the primary reason for the buddy system was to get the players to communicate better, and voice their thoughts without hesitation•Associated Press

When Anil Kumble took over as India’s head coach, he was quick to acknowledge the influence of his predecessors, notably John Wright, and said he would continue to pick his brain. In only his first week in the job, Kumble has already re-introduced one of Wright’s key concepts: a buddy system.During the 2001 series against Australia, Wright assigned a partner to each member of the team, usually pairing a batsman with a bowler. One such relationship, VVS Laxman becoming Zaheer Khan’s unofficial batting coach, carried on well beyond Wright’s tenure. Kumble has instituted something similar, usually pairing a batsman with a bowler or an allrounder: Shikhar Dhawan with Mohammed Shami, for example, or Virat Kohli with Bhuvneshwar Kumar.”It’s about the senior guys communicating with the junior guys,” Stuart Binny said. “Today we’ve paired up – each guy’s paired with another guy; it’s called a ‘buddy programme’. So it’s me and Rohit [Sharma] paired up together. Ro has played a lot of one-day cricket and Test cricket, and for me to share thoughts with him, that’s the way forward, I think. If I can help Rohit by 2%, then maybe he can help me with 30% – that’s what we’re looking to do today. It’s about helping each other through situations.Binny said the primary reason for the system was to get the players to communicate better, and voice their thoughts without hesitation.”It’s about me and Rohit communicating about our net sessions, about areas that I bowl [for example]. In the past, many guys held back because you didn’t want to say something to upset another guy, but we’ve been pushed in a direction to communicate what we want, especially with our games. There’s a lot you can learn from someone else, even by telling him that, I think this is the way forward. Communication is the key, I think. That’s what we’re trying to breed.”Over the course of their Test careers so far, Binny and Rohit have often vied for the same spot in the side, depending on whether conditions have demanded an extra batsman or an allrounder. Binny said that topic hadn’t come up yet. “No, not yet. I hope it doesn’t come to that, but, look, the team comes first, so whatever needs to be done on that day or before the Test match, we’re there to do it.”There was a slightly lopsided air to India’s nets session on Saturday in Bangalore; among the first to pad up was Amit Mishra, and one of the first spinners to have a lengthy bowl was Cheteshwar Pujara, who yelped in delight when he beat Ajinkya Rahane’s outside edge. Pujara had perhaps already picked up a tip or two from his buddy Mishra.”We’ve divided in such a way that batsmen will help bowlers and bowlers will help batsmen, so that whenever we need to play six or seven batsmen, the batsmen can chip in with the ball, bowl seven-eight overs for us,” Mishra said. “My buddy is Pujara – he bowls a bit of legspin; he can help me with my batting, and I can help with his legspin, so that whenever we might need it, he can bowl seven-eight overs for the team and help us.”

Burnley: Top-Class Speedster Could Be Cornet 2.0 At Turf Moor

Burnley are eyeing a number of new signings this summer as they look to build on their Championship title win, with Ryan Kent one man linked with a move to Turf Moor.

Would Ryan Kent be a good signing for Burnley?

The Rangers man, who will depart Ibrox on a free transfer this summer when his contract expires, is an option for the likes of Burnley, Sheffield United, Everton and Leeds United according to TEAMtalk.

Since signing for the Scottish outfit permanently in 2019, the tricky winger has gone on to make 218 appearances in total, contributing 38 goals and 57 assists.

He was vital for the Gers in their run to the Europa League final last season, notching one goal and five assists, which earned him a spot in the team of the tournament, perhaps emphasising why he could be such a good pickup on a free transfer this summer.

Even in a campaign that has been widely perceived as a difficult one for Rangers, Kent has contributed three goals and eight assists in the league with a strong 7.31 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Success in the Premier League will come for Burnley if they can add some quality in the final third, especially with the likes of Ashley Barnes and potentially Nathan Tella not being at Turf Moor next season.

Kompany may well be looking to spread out the goals in his squad once again as they did in the second tier this year and Kent's ability to find the back of the net, as well as his obvious eye for a pass, make him an ideal target.

Steven Gerrard was full of praise for the former Liverpool man during his time at Ibrox, saying:

"Ryan Kent has been top-class and hasn't let any noise affect him, he is scoring goals and looking very dangerous. He is really taking it to opposition teams."

If he were to arrive at Turf Moor, his dribbling ability and impressive record in the final third could see him emulate Maxwel Cornet, who impressed in his one-year stay at Burnley having joined from Lyon.

The Ivorian winger registered nine goals and one assist in 26 Premier League appearances and won over the fans with his performances before a relegation release clause saw him join West Ham United last summer.

He would average 1.8 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per game, compared to Kent's return of 2.1 shots, 2.2 key passes, and 1.9 dribbles per game at Rangers, which suggests that the Englishman could even be an upgrade on Cornet at Turf Moor.

Therefore, Kompany and Burnley should act quickly to bring Kent to the Premier League on a free transfer, as the speedster could be a superb addition to the squad.

Derbyshire implode after Browne double

Nick Browne’s unbeaten double-century provided the platform for Division Two leaders Essex to take complete control of the match against Derbyshire at Derby

Nick Browne’s unbeaten double-century provided the platform for Division Two leaders Essex to take complete control of the match against Derbyshire at Derby. The opener was unbeaten on 229, his second double-hundred of the season against Derbyshire, when Essex declared at 530 for 9 with Ryan ten Doeschate scoring 60 and Paul Walter 47 on his first-class debut.Derbyshire seamer Tom Milnes claimed a Championship best 6 for 93 but it was the only positive for the home side who collapsed before tea and closed the day 116 for 6.Essex went into the second morning already well placed and Browne and ten Doeschate accumulated steadily to take their partnership to 140 before Milnes broke through.Derbyshire should have removed Browne on 144 when he swatted a full toss from legspinner Matt Critchley to square leg but Charlie Macdonell spilled a simple chance. It was the second time Browne had been put down and he made the most of his good fortune by batting Essex into a position of utter dominance with the help of ten Doeschate and Walter. The Essex captain straight drove Critchley for six and although this was one of his less explosive innings against Derbyshire, his side were well on top when he played on to Milnes who claimed three more wickets in three overs after lunch. James Foster pulled to fine leg, Will Rhodes edged to second slip on his Essex debut after arriving on loan from Yorkshire and Graham Napier gloved a catch down the leg side but that was as good as it got for Derbyshire.Walter strode to the middle to dominate a stand of 83 in 13 overs, taking three consecutive fours from Callum Parkinson to bring up the 500 before Browne drove Tony Palladino over long-on for his second six.Essex pulled out when Palladino clipped Walter’s leg stump and Derbyshire were soon in deep trouble with Ben Slater lbw to Jamie Porter’s second delivery and Billy Godleman bowled in the fourth over. Wayne Madsen walked out needing 22 for 1000 championship runs for the season but was lbw to a Walter yorker without scoring and when Will Hughes was well taken down the leg side, Derbyshire were 34 for 4.Neil Broom looked secure and Macdonell showed application in his first Championship innings as the fifth wicket pair resisted for 17 overs before Napier produced a quicker ball to have Broom taken at first slip for 31. Walter returned to tempt Macdonell into an edged drive and although Alex Mellor and Matt Critchley dug in for 13 overs, Derbyshire were 414 behind at stumps.

One Party Now "Optimistic" Of Completing Man United Takeover

Manchester United bidders INEOS, who are fronted by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, are 'cautiously optimistic' over their chances of sealing a deal to take over at Old Trafford, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

What's the latest takeover news involving Manchester United?

As per Sky Sports, Ratcliffe and his petrochemicals firm INEOS are said to be the 'leading candidate' to assume control of Manchester United from the Glazer family.

The report states that Ratcliffe wants to buy a majority controlling stake in the Premier League giants that would leave Joel and Avram Glazer in minority stakeholding positions and INEOS remain the preferred option despite a new offer from rival bidder Qatari businessman Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani.

Former Manchester United icon Gary Neville has spoken about his frustration surrounding the ownership debacle on Twitter, stating: "Plainly obvious the Glazer family aren’t going to announce anything on the ownership until the season is closed! They’ve been spinning it out unprofessionally for weeks and months now. They know fan protests would have been more significant than they already have if matches were still being played and the end result of the sale process is unpopular."

INEOS want to purchase 69% of the club, whereas Sheikh Jassim and the Nine Two Foundation want to claim 100% of Manchester United and clear debt owed by the club, as per GOAL.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jacobs thinks that Ratcliffe and his INEOS team will be quietly confident over their chances of becoming the new owners of the Red Devils.

Jacobs told FFC: "INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have a flexible offer on the table, they're prepared to get in control of the club and allow Joel and Avram Glazer to stay, but they're also prepared to buy 69% of the football club. As a consequence of that and because their valuation is higher than the Nine Two Foundation, at around £6.5 billion, there's less of a negotiation there and more questioning around technical points of that bid and INEOS remain cautiously optimistic."

What next for Manchester United?

Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag will be keen to focus on matters on the field and will be readying his side for another tilt at trophy glory this weekend as they prepare to face Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

The Red Devils have already recorded Carabao Cup success this term and Ten Hag will want to add another trophy to his cabinet to complement what has been a commendable season in charge as his side will also have Champions League football to look forward to in 2023/24.

Chelsea's Mason Mount

Transfer targets will also be on the agenda for Manchester United and they are reportedly going to make a 'formal approach' to try and acquire Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount, as per Sky Sports.

Mount may be the first of several arrivals at Old Trafford as things get set to hot up on and off the pitch at Manchester United in the next few weeks.

Scrappy Pakistan seek white-ball revival

Having lost seven out of 12 T20Is this year, Pakistan will aim to break away from their usual conservative approach against a formidable West Indies side in the UAE

The Preview by Deivarayan Muthu22-Sep-2016Match factsSeptember 23, 2016
Start time 8pm local (1600GMT)Big PicturePakistan’s stellar run in Test cricket culminated with their rise to No.1 in the ICC’s rankings for the first time . In limited-overs cricket, however, they are way behind the pack: ninth in ODIs and seventh in T20Is. Their outdated style, based on a safety-first approach, has largely been responsible for their sharp nosedive.West Indies are way behind the pack in Test cricket, but their attack-first approach in limited-overs cricket, especially in T20Is, has made them the heartthrobs of the shortest format. It resurfaced when they secured their second World T20 earlier this year in India.Their MVPs – Andre Russell and Chris Gayle – aren’t in either squad, but they still have the luxury of depth. Opener Evin Lewis shellacked a 48-ball ton against India in Lauderhill last month, the sixth fastest in T20Is. The uncapped players – Rovman Powell and Nicholas Pooran, who hit 143 out of West Indies Under-19s’ 208 at this venue two years ago at the World Cup – overcame a top-order flutter in the warm-up game against Emirates Cricket Board XI on Tuesday. Fast bowler Kesrick Williams, who bowled a sensational triple-wicket maiden in the CPL, is also in the mix.Pakistan don’t have enough firepower, but Sarfraz Ahmed’s calmness in a team filled with mercurial batsmen stands out. They also welcome back their highest run-getter in T20Is – Umar Akmal (1689 runs at a strike rate of 122.92). They showed some late sparks on the trip to the UK, but it remains to be seen if they can they convert it into a proper white-ball revival.Form guidePakistan WLLLW (last five completed matches, most recent first)

His cousin, Babar Azam, who was among those to receive glowing appraisals from coach Mickey Arthur after the England tour, seems a good investment.Finisher with bat, finisher with the ball. Excellent situational awareness. Dwayne Bravo is probably the most sought-after T20 player. Pakistan will have to be wary of the big dipping offcutter on sluggish surfaces the sides are likely to encounter in this series.Teams newsThe returning Umar is a near-certainty in the XI, which means Mohammad Rizwan, who had played as a specialist batsman in the one-off T20 at Old Trafford, is likely to miss out. Left-arm spinning allrounder Mohammad Nawaz, who claimed 4 for 26 to seal Karachi Blues’ tense National T20 Cup win, might push Hasan Ali and Saad Nasim out of the team.Pakistan(probable): 1 Sharjeel Khan, 2 Khalid Latif, 3 Babar Azam, 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Sarfraz Ahmed (capt & wk), 7 Imad Wasim, 8 Wahab Riaz, 9 Hasan Ali/Mohammad Nawaz/Saad Nasim, 10 Sohail Tanvir, 11 Mohammad AmirPooran will jostle with Powell for a middle-order slot thrown open by the absence of Lendl Simmons, who is out because of medial reasons. Tottenham: Spurs Make Contact For "Incredible" Defender

Tottenham Hotspur have made contact with the agents of Juventus defender Gleison Bremer to sign him this summer, according to reports out of Italy.

Who could Spurs sign this summer?

Spurs have reportedly earmarked new signings for an array of key positions throughout Ange Postecoglou's squad, with a new goalkeeper, central midfielder and defensive reinforcements being eyed.

Lilywhites chairman Daniel Levy, at long last, ended his pursuit for a new manager on Tuesday when Postecoglou was confirmed as Antonio Conte's replacement.

The Australian will officially commence work on July 1, and it's an appointment which marks the return of attacking football to N17 after the more pragmatic eras of Conte, Nuno Espirito Santo and Jose Mourinho.

The summer transfer window is looming and Spurs must get to work on identifying transfer targets, with Leicester City star James Maddison, Man United's Harry Maguire and Southampton's James Ward-Prowse among the names already linked.

Signing a centre-back is thought to be one of their main priorities and reports have suggested that Postecoglou has already given the green-light to Tottenham bringing in new defenders.

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou.

Maguire, Man City star Aymeric Laporte and Wolves ace Max Kilman are thought to be attracting their interest, but a report from Italy has shared that Bremer of Juve is now a target too.

According to Calciomercato, the Brazilian has admirers at Tottenham, and it is believed they have already made contact with his representatives. Spurs have apparently approached Juve for Bremer, but they aren't the only ones, with Atletico Madrid also moving for him.

Juve, for their part, won't accept "light figures" and are set to remain firm in that regard – even despite their struggles both on and off the pitch.

Who is Gleison Bremer?

The 26-year-old has been a mainstay at Juve since signing from Torino last summer, starting 30 Serie A games last season and making more clearances per 90 than any of his teammates (WhoScored).

Bremer also averaged more interceptions per 90 than any Juve player over 2022/2023 in the Italian top flight, with Calcio football expert Conor Clancy calling him "incredible" all the way back in 2021.

He told GiveMeSport:

“He's an incredible defender, and he'll obviously leave Torino this year. In Italy, he has been linked with Inter; he’s been linked with everyone. And there's a reason for that; it's because he's brilliant.”

The centre-back could be a very useful asset at Tottenham and real coup for Postecoglou, if Juve are willing to sanction a sale.

Shakib braced to be Bangladesh's main man

Bangladesh allrounder Shakib Al Hasan has said that getting used to the workload of a Test match will be his main challenge going into first Test against England at Chittagong on Thursday

Mohammad Isam18-Oct-2016Bangladesh allrounder Shakib Al Hasan has said that getting used to the workload of a Test match will be his main challenge going into first Test against England at Chittagong on Thursday.Although Bangladesh have named four spinners in their 14-man squad, Shakib – with 147 wickets in 42 Tests – is by far and away the most experienced member of a quartet that also includes Taijul Islam, Shuvagata Hom and the uncapped Mehedi Hasan.Taijul did claim the remarkable figures of 8 for 39 to defeat Zimbabwe at Dhaka in 2014, but he managed a solitary scalpin his two most recent Tests against India and South Africa last year. Shuvagata hasn’t convinced in his seven Tests, picking up eight wickets at a bowling average of 59.12; Mehedi is also an offspinner, and has taken 41 first-class wickets at 23.48 but is completely unproven at Test level. Meanwhile, the two-man seam attack has one rookie in Kamrul Islam Rabbi. The thin look puts much pressure on Shakib, who has bowled marathon spells in Tests ever since Mohammad Rafique retired in 2008. He will also be a vital source of runs in Bangladesh’s middle-order.”I think I will find out about my confidence when I get into the Test,” Shakib said. “We are trying to be best prepared for the game. We haven’t played a Test for a long time and I don’t even remember the last time I played a longer-version match. So this is going to be a little difficult for me. To be honest, there isn’t much to prepare for, since a lot of it is the mentality going into a Test match.”Since their last Test in July last year Bangladesh have played 27 international matches but also had to go through a pause of ten months between November 2015 and September this year to play ODIs. Shakib said that it took Bangladesh some time to get used the ODIs as well, despite their success in the format in 2015.”We have also played ODIs after nearly a year and it took us two-three matches to get into the groove. It is different to bat or bowl for a longer period, which in itself is a challenge,” he said.Shakib said that their bowling attack has the ability to bowl out a side twice in a Test match, provided they get some help from the pitch. “A lot will depend on the wicket. We usually try to play on flat surfaces in home conditions so that our batsmen can score runs.”If the conditions favour our spinners and pacers, I think they have the ability to take 20 wickets. But it won’t happen on a flat wicket,” said Shakib.
