Celtic Accept Transfer Offer For Versatile Youngster

Celtic have agreed a deal with Brighton & Hove Albion for versatile youngster Ronan Ferns, according to reports.

What’s the latest Celtic transfer news involving Ferns?

Ferns, regarded by Celtic's coaching staff as a hugely promising talent and earning himself a reputation as a future star, is primarily a centre-back but can also play in midfield if required.

However, the 16-year-old’s future in Glasgow has been up in the air in recent months, with Brighton making an offer for his services back in April. The Seagulls were chasing a quick deal for the Scotland youth international, and it looks as if there has been a breakthrough when it comes to a transfer.

Writing for The Daily Record in their live transfer blog on Thursday (09:26), Scott Burns provided an update on Ferns’ future, which looks like it will be on the south coast, describing it as a blow to those at Celtic Park.

“Brighton have agreed a £250,000 deal to sign Celtic youngster Ronan Ferns. The Scotland youth defender will join the Premier League outfit this summer.

“Ferns, who can also play midfield, had come through the Celtic youth ranks but hadn’t signed professional forms. It meant that the Seagulls were able to make their move for the 16-year-old. It was a blow for the Hoops who were keen to keep Ferns. Celtic would have been entitled to training compensation but have now cut a deal that will also see them get further add-ons. Ferns will join Brighton’s under-23 and development squad in the first instance.”

Who could Celtic sign this summer?

Ferns looks like he is on course to become the latest Celtic teenager to leave for the Premier League, but it does look as if the Parkhead board are chasing additions to Brendan Rodgers’ senior side ahead oof the 2023/24 season.

According to reports, Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is a target at Celtic Park, whereas Norwegian playmaker Odin Thiago Holm has now been confirmed as the first Celtic signing of Rodgers' second tenure in charge, signing a five-year deal after undergoing a medical in London on Wednesday.

As well as new midfielders, a Celtic bid has also been submitted to sign right-winger Yang Hyun-jun from Gangwon FC. It could well be a busy few months ahead of Rodgers’ second tenure in charge, but by the looks of it, Ferns will be ending his association with the Hoops, aiming to make the grade in England instead.

Players still chasing full CA finance records

The Australian Cricketers Association’s proposal features a spending cap on Cricket Australia’s bureaucracy

A proposal by the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) that calls for a cap on Cricket Australia’s (CA) administrative costs has been underlined by the Association as it chases full disclosure of the game’s finances ahead of the next round of MOU meetings, set for next week. The ACA executive, which includes Aaron Finch, Moises Henriques, Neil Maxwell, Lisa Sthalekar, Janet Torney and Shane Watson, met in Sydney on Monday ahead of the Allan Border Medal ceremony, which in itself is a vestige of warmer past relations between the players and CA.Negotiations for the next MOU broke down in December amid bitter sparring between the two parties, and though informal talks have resumed, the players remain convinced they are not being afforded the sort of transparency they had previously enjoyed when trying to reach an agreement with the board.Suggestions of “a ceiling on Cricket Australia’s administrative costs to create space for greater grassroots investment as future revenues grow” were included in the ACA’s original submission to the pay talks. That would appear to be a counter to CA’s claim that the longstanding fixed revenue percentage model by which players are paid needed to be pared back to only include the top male players, because more cash needed to be spent on the game’s grassroots. The ACA president Greg Dyer asserted that the players needed greater access to CA’s financial records than has presently been offered if talks are to progress.”The executive of the ACA are adamant that there must be greater financial disclosure from Cricket Australia if the talks are to meaningfully progress,” Dyer said in a statement. “Many players ask the very fair question: how does the game spend the revenue the players generate for it?”Players receive less than 20% of total revenue, and only 12% currently goes into grassroots investment. The players would like to see a greater investment in grassroots cricket, a better deal for female cricketers, and an ongoing share of BBL and WBBL revenue they generate.”We want the negotiations to be fully informed as due diligence demands. These are very fair questions and a very reasonable position for the players to take. Players regard themselves as genuine partners in the game. This is the strength of the current model – a partnership model which has grown the game and a partnership the players value and will fight for.”The ACA’s chief executive Alistair Nicholson, meanwhile, offered a reminder that fruitful talks needed to start in order to allow the new agreement to apply to the next round of contracts for all players, international and domestic, male and female.”Failure to get this sequencing right means that the contracts could include some of the out-of-date terms and conditions the ACA has acknowledged in our submission,” he said, “and could also create different types of contracts which create inequities from player to player. The MOU informs the contracts. That’s why the sequence needs to be MOU first and contracts second.”While there were few overt references to the MOU during the presentation ceremony, the Allan Border Medallist David Warner did make reference to the link between the present players and their forebears for helping to forge the path that has led to their current riches.

Man United: Reporter issues big takeover update from "insiders"

Insiders with information on the ongoing Manchester United takeover are 'adamant' that Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS group are still in the running, according to journalist Ben Jacobs via GIVEMESPORT.

What is the latest news regarding Manchester United's takeover?

Indeed, with the Glazers starting to explore a potential sale back in November 2022, a lot has happened since then.

As it stands, there are two contenders for ownership of the club, with both British Billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Qatari Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim submitting incredible bids that exceeded £5 billion in previous months.

Both bids still fall short of the Glazer families' valuation of the club, which sits at a mind-blowing £6 billion, and it is believed that neither Ratcliffe nor Sheikh Jassim is willing to cave to those demands.

Sheikh Jassim and the Nine Two Foundation seem to be leading the race for ownership of the Red Devils after reports emerged in the last week or so, but Ratcliffe could still swoop in and take ownership.

What has Ben Jacobs said regarding the takeover?

Ben Jacobs told GIVEMESPORT: "At the moment, nothing is progressing on the INEOS side even though it hasn’t been communicated to them that they’re formally out of the race. In fact, quite the opposite.

Many insiders are adamant that they’re still there. So, this would also suggest that Qatar can be somewhat more positive, but also sceptical because they’re in the dark as to the Glazers' intentions.

So, from Qatar’s perspective, they either think they’re going to win or it will be a no-sale and from Ratcliffe’s perspective, the group are going to have to work out how they can get board approval, if they are to proceed. Otherwise, they could be out of the race."

How is Manchester United's transfer business affected by the takeover news?

The uncertainty around the takeover is undoubtedly having an effect on the club's ability to conduct business this window.

The Red Devils are the only "big six" side yet to confirm a deal, however, the club have agreed a deal to sign two-time Chelsea Player of the Year Mason Mount in a deal that could rise to £60 million after having three bids rejected for the Englishman.

The club is also in the market for a goalkeeper after the expiry of David De Gea's contract, and Andre Onana appeared to be the first choice for Erik ten Hag. According to a report from the Mirror, however, United may have to pivot from the Cameroonian to cheaper alternatives due to FFP rules.

It remains to be seen if the club will pursue a new striker this window as well, with names like Harry Kane, Rasmus Hojlund and Goncalo Ramos all being linked with big-money moves to the side, but with the FFP restrictions, these targets may well be out of their price range.

As what is a crucial summer for the club continues on, all involved will be hoping that the takeover is completed soon, so they can attack the market and try to build from a successful last campaign.

Ford 'excited' by batting talent despite Sri Lanka collapse

Despite their not posting a 200-plus total yet in the ODI series, Graham Ford has said he is ‘excited’ by the way some of Sri Lanka’s young batsmen batted while getting starts in the second ODI

Despite Sri Lanka slumping to a second big defeat in the ODI series against South Africa, coach Graham Ford found a silver lining from their performance in Durban. Surprisingly, it was in their batting, even though Sri Lanka have yet to post a total over 200 in the series.”I was quite excited with what I saw today. Unfortunately none of our batsmen converted starts but they certainly showed they have got the talent to play at this level and to make an impact at this level,” he said. “I feel when I look at the number of games so many of them have played and the ages of some of them, if they are looked after and shown the right kind of support, in time, they could be a very good Sri Lankan side.”Kusal Mendis, Niroshan Dickwella and Dhananjaya de Silva are 22, 23 and 25 respectively and between them have played just 40 ODIs. None of them had been to South Africa before this trip and the experience they will gain from facing the moving ball on surfaces with good bounce and carry is something Ford hopes will put them on the right path for the future.”For some of the guys it’s a bit of a jolt to come and see how tough it is to play in foreign conditions and to play in South Africa,” Ford said. “From that point of view, it’s got to be a learning opportunity. If we are realistic and we look at the players we’ve got and the ages and the amount of games they have played, it is about learning and it is about improving. At times we’ve shown improvement, at times I have hoped for more improvement. On tonight’s performance, I was quite excited about what I saw.”With less than six months to go before the Champions Trophy in June, where Sri Lanka will face South Africa in the group stage, Ford knows his team needs to develop fairly quickly. “It’s pretty clear there is a lot of improvement that needs to take place. From what I saw from some of these young batsmen, they showed they can handle this sort of bowling attack,” he said. “Conditions in England might not suit them as much as today’s conditions so we will have to do a bit of thinking about balance of side and the way we can try and disrupt them in those conditions but we will have to improve a lot in all three disciplines.”For now, Sri Lanka have to find to find a way to deal with South Africa over the next eight days. They will play three more matches, all must-win, all without regular captain Angelo Mathews, whose absence Ford admitted has been felt. “In white-ball cricket, Angelo is a fantastic allrounder. He is the leader of the group so it is a setback but if I look at where we are at, it gives us a chance to groom a couple of other guys in the set-up and hopefully it will pay us back down the line.”As a result, Sri Lanka will look to the only other members of their squad who have toured South Africa before, stand-in skipper Upul Tharanga and senior batsman Dinesh Chandimal, to lead the resurrection.Chandimal’s form, in particular, has been worrying. He scored 85 runs in six innings in the Tests at an average of under 15, 33 runs in the three T20s and 22 and 36 in the two ODIs. But Ford has noticed the steady increase in Chandimal’s contributions and suspects that something bigger and better is on the horizon now that the wicketkeeper-batsman has recovered from the thumb dislocations that sidelined him late last year.”In recent weeks, he has started to look a lot better, started to time the ball and shown he is not far away,” Ford said. “He started this tour a little under-done because of that serious finger injury but we all know what a capable player he is. He will get one score score hopefully in the next game and hopefully he won’t look back.”

Karunaratne battles but Bangladesh can dare to dream

Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman picked up three wickets apiece as Bangladesh took a grip on the Colombo Test. Sri Lanka were only 139 ahead with two wickets in hand

The Report by Mohammad Isam at P Sara Oval18-Mar-2017

Isam: Bangladesh’s chance to bury second-innings problems

The Test is tantalisingly poised. Sri Lanka, holders of a proud home record, stretched their lead to 139 thanks to two centuries: of runs from Dimuth Karunaratne and of balls by the No. 8 Dilruwan Perera. But Bangladesh, playing in a landmark game of their own, can consider themselves in control of their 100th Test after picking up eight wickets on the fourth day.The day ended on a strange note for Bangladesh after umpire Aleem Dar seemed to nod in the affirmative to an appeal, as if to suggest Suranga Lakmal had got a faint inside edge to short leg off the last ball bowled by Mosaddek Hossain. Replays, however, didn’t indicate an edge but it was another example of how tough this Test has been for the umpires. That Bangladesh made inroads through the day was because the attack was led astutely by Shakib Al Hasan, who took three wickets, including that of Karunaratne in the final session for 126. Having removed Asela Gunaratne and Niroshan Dickwella earlier, Shakib finished with 3 for 61 after 30 overs of accurate left-arm spin.Yet the man instrumental for breaking Sri Lanka’s back was Mustafizur Rahman, after the hosts looked steady the first session despite losing Upul Tharanga in the day’s second over to Mehedi Hasan. Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis had weathered the early burst and added 86, large parts of it being accrued before lunch.Mendis, who made 36, was given an early reprieve on 12 when Imrul Kayes couldn’t hold on to a sharp chance at short leg. Then he was nearly run out on 28 after a mix-up with Karunaratne, but Sabbir Rahman’s throw from cover missed the stumps at the bowler’s end. Sri Lanka had wiped out the deficit and were ahead by 8 at lunch, looking comfortable, but that was to soon change.Mustafizur first dismissed Mendis in controversial fashion; the third umpire overturned a not-out decision though replays didn’t quite suggest a nick to the wicketkeeper. Dhananjaya de Silva and first-innings centurion Dinesh Chandimal were then out chasing wide deliveries after being starved of width for most parts of their short stays.Even as Sri Lanka collapsed in the middle session, losing five wickets for 62 runs in 26 overs, Karunaratne battled on to reach his fifth Test century. He found an ally in Perera, who fought with him during the course of 22.2 overs in which they added 27. The gallant fight ended when Shakib had Karunaratne caught at slip after an effort that spanned 244 balls and included 10 fours and a six over mid-on.Rangana Herath continued to blunt the bowling with Perera, batting for another nine overs before being trapped by Taijul Islam with a delivery that fizzed in with the angle from over the wicket. Perera remained steadfast in defence, only getting his first boundaries after he had faced 110 balls. He added 30 valuable runs with Lakmal before stumps.

Tottenham Could Land £35m Wizard Who’s "Like Gareth Bale"

Tottenham Hotspur's impressive start to the transfer window looks set to continue, with various reports suggesting that the Lilwhites have reached an agreement for the signing of Manor Solomon on a free transfer.

The Shakhtar Donetsk ace – who spent last season on loan at Fulham – joins James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario in arriving through the door at N17, with new boss Ange Postecoglou having also overseen the permanent captures of both Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski.

In the case of Solomon, the 23-year-old showed flashes of his quality at Craven Cottage last season despite missing the first half of the campaign through injury, notably scoring four goals in four successive Premier League games between mid-February and early March.

That impending addition will help to strengthen a forward line that does appear rather thin on the ground at present, particularly with Lucas Moura having been allowed to depart at the end of his contract.

With that in mind, it would be no surprise if Solomon is not the only attacking asset to join Postecoglou's ranks this summer, with the Daily Mail having notably revealed at the weekend that the ex-Celtic boss is a big admirer of Brighton and Hove Albion star, Kaoru Mitoma.

The Greek-Aussie did reveal earlier this year that he had tried to sign the Japanese sensation – who is now valued at around £35m – during his stint in charge at Parkhead, with it perhaps not out of the question that the 57-year-old could revive his interest in the dazzling wing wizard.

Should Tottenham sign Kaoru Mitoma?

After previously scoring eight goals and laying on four assists in 26 games during his time on loan at Union Saint-Gilloise during the 2021/22 campaign, the 26-year-old went on to replicate that impact in the Premier League last time out, scoring seven goals and contributing six assists in 33 top-flight outings.

Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma

The highly-rated speedster – who also provided a further five goal involvements while on cup duty – has been something of a revelation of late under Roberto De Zerbi, having helped to power the Seagulls to European qualification last term.

A move to Spurs, therefore, would undoubtedly be warranted, with there a potential for Postecoglou to form an exciting attacking partnership moving forward involving Mitoma on one side and the aforementioned Solomon on the other.

While the latter man typically operated on the left-wing during his time in west London, the Israeli international has featured heavily throughout his career on the right flank, thus allowing Mitoma to rival and compete with Heung-min Son on the opposite side.

The major benefit of that partnership would be the duo's innate dribbling prowess, helping to offer a real devastating and direct threat down either flank, with the Brighton dynamo ranking in the top 5% for progressive carries among his European peers as well as in the top 16% for successful take-ons, while Solomon ranks in the top 6% for that latter metric.

Aside from being able to blossom alongside the Shakhtar menace, a further positive of snapping up Mitoma is his apparent likeness to a legendary figure of Tottenham's recent history, with Tim Sherwood (Premier League Productions, 15/04/2023, 15:55) having stated that the £10k-per-week ace manipulates the ball "like Gareth Bale".

The now-retired Welshman – who also typically operated on the flanks – is a figure who needs no real introduction, having scored 72 goals and provided 58 assists in 237 games for the north Londoners across two spells.

To think that the Lilywhites could potentially be able to line up Bale's heir apparent – and a dream partner for Solomon – with the addition of Mitoma is a truly mouthwatering prospect, indeed.

Leeds Could Ditch Roca For "Classy" £5.6k-p/w Maestro

With Daniel Farke now at the helm at Leeds United, the Elland Road outfit can begin to truly get their transfer dealings underway, with new recruits no doubt need ahead of next season's promotion push.

One area which looks particularly light at present is the midfield ranks, with January loan arrival Weston McKennie having made his return to parent club, Juventus at the end of last season, while experienced Englishman, Adam Forshaw departed the club last month following the expiry of his contract.

With speculation also rife that Tyler Adams could be set for pastures new after just a solitary season in Yorkshire, there is a growing need to bring in potential replacements as soon as possible, with the start of the new campaign just over a month away.

Amid that need for further midfield depth, Football Insider recently reported that the Whites are set to rival Burnley for the signing of Queen's Park Rangers star, Sam Field, with the 25-year-old now entering the final year of his contract at Loftus Road.

The former West Bromwich Albion man – who made the move to west London on an initial loan deal in 2021 – could prove to be a wise investment as Leeds prepare for life back in the second tier.

How good is Sam Field?

As someone who typically operates in a defensive midfield berth – as well as in a more advanced role – the Englishman could represent a dream replacement for Marc Roca in the centre of the park, with the latter man having been tipped to seal a return to his native Spain after a difficult first season at Elland Road.

Marc Roca for Leeds

The former Bayern Munich man was notably described as "very, very poor" by journalist Dean Jones following the defeat to Fulham back in April, with Farke likely to need to ruthlessly ditch the £50k-per-week dud due to his errant displays last term.

The signing of Field, therefore, could help to nudge Roca out the door, with the QPR man potentially set to offer something of an upgrade in that deep-lying midfield berth.

Previously described as "classy" and "elegant" by former teammate Ben Foster after rising through the youth ranks at the Hawthorns, the 6 foot 3 maestro enjoyed a particularly strong 2022/23 campaign in the second tier, with his ball-winning brilliance showcased by the fact that he averaged 4.3 tackles and interceptions per game from his 46 league outings.

That stellar record is in stark contrast to what Roca achieved in the top flight, with the one-time Espanyol man averaging just 2.8 tackles and interceptions per game from 32 league appearances, having also been dribbled past 1.4 times per game as a marker of just what a defensive liability he was last term.

Field's ability to break up play was also showcased by the fact that he won 64% of his ground duels and 63% of his total duels in 2022/23, with that again far superior to what record achieved for the Yorkshire giants, as he won just 48% of his ground duels and 49% of his total duels.

The current Leeds man was not even able to offer much in the way of an attacking or creative threat after providing just three goal contributions, with that also less than what the former England U20 international notched up in the Championship (four goals and assists).

With the £5.6k-per-week machine evidently capable of thriving in the second tier, a move to bring him to Elland Road would likely represent an astute piece of business, while also allowing Farke to show Roca the door in the process.
