Southampton Now Set To Sign 26-Cap International Alongside Holgate

Southampton boss Russell Martin is closing in on a Premier League winger to aid Saints' promotion push before the end of the deadline, according to reports.

What's the latest news involving Southampton?

Saints have got to work in the market over the summer since being relegated to the Sky Bet Championship and have confirmed the arrivals of Ryan Manning, Shea Charles, Joe Lumley and Flynn Downes, as per Transfermarkt.

David Ornstein, who is one of The Athletic's lead journalists, has issued an update on X detailing that Southampton are close to bringing in some top-flight experience in defence, stating: "Southampton on track to complete signing of defender Mason Holgate on loan from Everton. 26yo former England U21 international scheduled to travel today + undergo medical before finalising season-long move, no option to buy."

Swansea City defender Nathan Wood is on the radar of Southampton and Football Insider report that boss Martin is readying an offer to try and tempt the 23-year-old to swap Wales for the South Coast.

Dutch striker Joel Piroe, who was a teammate of Wood at Swansea City, was also named as a target for Southampton as Martin seeks to add to his offensive options; however, he has since went on to put pen to paper at Leeds United in a transfer worth around £12 million, as per Wales Online.

Enquires have been made by Southampton regarding the availability of West Ham United defender Ben Johnson as the window veers into its final stretch, according to Football Insider. The 23-year-old is out of contract next year and has yet to feature for the Hammers in their opening Premier League fixtures.

Johnson is believed to feature high on Southampton's wanted list as they look to find a new full-back to replace Tino Livramento, who completed a switch to Newcastle United earlier this summer.

Who else could Southampton sign?

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has reported on X that Saints are set to add another reinforcement from the Premier League to the ranks that will strengthen their options on the flanks, as he stated: "Ryan Fraser is set to join Southampton on a season-long loan deal. The winger has been training away from the first team group for months now."

Sky Sports News then dropped even more exciting news on live TV, saying: "Bit of news regarding Ryan Fraser, he's currently having his Southampton medical."

Fraser earns a whopping £63,000 per week on the books at Newcastle United and has been frozen out at St James' Park under Eddie Howe since last campaign, as per The Athletic.

Newcastle United forward Ryan Fraser.

Despite attracting interest from Scottish champions Celtic, Sky Bet Championship outfit Leeds United and Serie A side Empoli, Fraser will now become Southampton's fifth signing of the window and will offer guile and experience in the final third.

During his time at Newcastle United, 26-cap Scotland international Fraser has made 59 appearances across all competitions, registering three goals and six assists in total, as per Transfermarkt.

BBC Radio Solent Sports editor Adam Blackmore claims that Southampton are set to sign both Fraser and Holgate imminently and there is a chance that either could be involved in Saints' home clash against Queens Park Rangers this weekend.

Nasir Hossain's five-for demolishes Chittagong for 67

The Sylhet captain led from the front, finishing with his maiden five-wicket haul, and ensuring that the team’s play-off hopes remained alive

Sylhet Sixers kept their hopes of qualifying into the playoffs as they walloped Chittagong Vikings by ten wickets in Dhaka. Chittagong were bowled out for 67 – the lowest total of BPL 2017 and joint fourth-lowest of all time – and Sylhet cruised to victory with 53 balls to spare. It was the largest margin of victory – in terms of balls remaining – this season.Nasir Hossain, the captain, took his maiden T20 five-wicket haul, and he was assisted by the spin duo of Nabil Samad (3 for 7) and Sharifullah (2 for 32) as Chittagong were bowled out in the 12th over of their innings.Nasir’s double strikeAs Sylhet displayed in their wicket-less chase, the pitch was not a difficult one to bat on. But Chittagong were adamant about being over-aggressive and paid a steep price for it. Luke Ronchi started the game off with a first-ball six off Nasir, but the Sylhet captain bowled his opposite number the very next ball. Four deliveries later, Soumya Sarkar, the other opener, checked his drive to a ball that held up after pitching, handing Nasir the easiest of catches. At the end of the first over, Chittagong’s score read 7 for 2.Nasir continued to chip away at the wickets, by bowling slow and maintaining a tight line. In his second over, he had the dangerous-looking Luis Reece lbw for 12. In this third, he trapped Tanbir Hayder plumb lbw with an arm ball. And in his last over, Nasir got one to bounce a little more than Stiaan van Zyl expected, forcing the batsman to mis-hit to midwicket. By the time Nasir bowled himself out, Chittagong were 45 for 6.The Nabil, Sharifullah assist Nasir may have finished with five wickets to his name, but Sylhet’s other two spinners played important roles as well. They kept a check on Chittagong’s scoring from the other end and took five wickets of their own. Their seven overs cost only 30 runs and ensured there wasn’t a last-minute rearguard.Fletcher, Rizwan make it look easyThe fact that there were no demons in the pitch was made amply clear when the Sylhet openers Andre Fletcher and Mohammad Rizwan cut, swept and pulled their way to an unbeaten partnership of 68 in 67 balls with ten fours and a six.

Tottenham: Postecoglou Eyeing "Magnificent" £13m Davinson Sanchez Upgrade

Tottenham Hotspur have commenced the 2023/24 Premier League campaign with promise, having defeated Manchester United after drawing away to Brentford, but are still hoping for one or two more signings before the transfer window closes next week.

A raft of signings have been made already since Ange Postecoglou took the helm in June, but despite the arrivals of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and defenders Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro (the latter's loan move made permanent), the work still feels incomplete.

Indeed, Spurs shipped 63 goals last term – conceding more than all but the three relegated outfits and newly-promoted sides Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest – and as such, one more move to strengthen the backline further would surely be worthwhile.

What's the latest on Tosin Adarabioyo to Tottenham?

That's according to RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins, who claims that while Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo wishes to be sold to Monaco this summer, the Cottagers hope for Spurs to launch a bid and offer Eric Dier in return.

Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…

Hawkins revealed earlier in the window that Fulham would hope to recuperate around €15m (£13m) for the 25-year-old, who has entered the final year of his £37k-per-week contract at Craven Cottage.

How good is Tosin Adarabioyo?

The Manchester-born defender has been instrumental for Marco Silva's side since signing from Manchester City in 2020, having made 107 appearances, guiding the club up from the Championship and cementing their position as an established top-flight outfit.

His performances over the past several seasons – showings that have left the likes of writer Muhammad Butt hailing him as "magnificent" – are evidence enough that he would improve Tottenham's defence, and he would undoubtedly be an upgrade on the struggling Davinson Sanchez.

Spurs' Colombian centre-half signed from Ajax for £42m in 2017, which was a club record at the time, and arrived with a weight of expectation, with former manager Mauricio Pochettino even proclaiming that he could become one of the world's best defenders.

It's safe to say that he has flattered to deceive, with pundit Jamie O'Hara even branding the 27-year-old "one of Tottenham's worst ever players", having also compounded his situation by recording an average Sofascore rating of just 6.75 last term, very much at the epicentre of the club's defensive woes and keeping only two clean sheets from 18 outings.

Adarabioyo, comparatively, has been thriving; last term the Whalley Range-born titan recorded an average league score of 6.89, completing 82% of his passes and making a staggering 5.5 clearances per game.

In fact, he ranks among the top 1% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for clearances per 90, which underscores his impressive robustness and athleticism, batting away danger and protecting the goalkeeper's net.

A no-nonsense central defender, Adarabioyo would evidently bolster Postecoglou's backline in an instant and would do so for a bargain fee, and with the increments being made for the side's resurgence this term, the Fulham ace would prove to be a major success story if Spurs do ward off the competition to secure his signature.

Wildermuth, Labuschagne lead Queensland fightback

They were unbeaten on 95 and 92 to help their side put on 4 for 343 in a mere 81 overs at the WACA ground

Unbeaten 90-plus scores from Jack Wildermuth and Marnus Labuschagne, and a patient half-century from Joe Burns steered Queensland to 4 for 343 in a mere 81 overs after Western Australia were bowled out for 414 at the WACA Ground.Burns anchored the major part of Queesnland’s innings with a 142-ball 81, helping his side recover after three of the top four fell for 25 or less. After he was trapped in front by medium-pacer Simon Mackin, Wildermuth (95*) and Labuschagne (92*) stitched together an unbroken fifth-wicket stand worth 145. The final 10 overs of the day were hammered for 62 runs as both batsmen went to stumps with 17 fours each.Earlier in the day, Western Australia could last only 11.2 overs, having resumed on their overnight score of 7 for 355. However, their lower order added 59 runs in this period, led by a brisk half-century from Josh Inglis. His 74-ball effort, which included eight fours and two sixes, took the side past 400, before Brendan Doggett dismissed him to become the third Queensland bowler – apart from Wildermuth and Luke Feldman – to bag a three-four in the innings.

Desmanche?

Hodge, Shillingford deliver Windward Islands maiden win

Kavem Hodge’s century and offspinner Shane Shillingford’s match haul of 6 for 88 consigned Trinidad and Tobago to an innings-and-37-run defeat in their clash against Windward Islands

Kavem Hodge’s second first-class century and offspinner Shane Shillingford’s match haul of 6 for 88 consigned Trinidad and Tobago to an innings-and-37-run defeat in their Regional 4-Day Tournament clash against Windward Islands at St George’s. It was Windward Islands’ first win of the competition.T&T invited Windward Islands to bat, but could not put up a score of substance after the opposition amassed 366, managing scores of 172 and 157. Even so, they could probably have asked Windward Islands to bat again had they not allowed them to stage a recovery from 37 for 2 in the first innings.Hodge’s arrival steadied them thereafter, as they recovered through a third-wicket stand of 81 between him and Devon Smith. He later found an able partner in Kyle Mayers, with whom he added 107 for the fifth wicket. Hodge, in fact, played second fiddle as Mayers took over the scoring, slamming his 74 off just 68 balls and with the assistance of 10 fours and three sixes. After Mayers’ dismissal, Hodge batted around the tail to haul the total past 350.T&T’s new-ball bowler Daniel St Craig was wrecker-in-chief, snaring 6 for 62.T&T were reduced to 13 for 2 in reply and went into a shell thereafter. Denesh Ramdin, their captain, fought alone, holding up his end for 75, but the scoreboard remained stagnant for long periods. Yannic Cariah batted 70 balls for seven runs, while Tion Webster laboured for 32 balls for his 3. Tyrone Theophile nipped out Ramdin in his ninth over, before Shillingford put T&T out of their misery by dismissing the last man Bryan Charles in the next over.Shillingford finished with 3 for 36 and found ample support all around, with each of Windward Islands’ six bowlers, making an entry into the wickets column.Like in the first innings, T&T had a solitary batsman fighting after being asked to follow-on. This time, it was the opener Amir Jangoo, who had struck over half his team’s runs when he was dismissed for 69 with T&T slipping to 122 for 6. They folded for 157. Shillingford and Sherman Lewis shared six wickets between them equally, while the left-arm spinner Larry Edwards, and the opening bowlers Mayers and Delorn Johnson accounted for the rest.

Southampton missed out on £10.5m Ross Stewart upgrade

Southampton head into the international break on a sour note having been on the end of a 5-0 thrashing against Sunderland and as a result, saw their unbeaten Championship record come to an end.

The Saints were outclassed in every department as the Black Cats landed ten shots on target, created six big chances and recorded an xG of 1.94, condemning the visitors to a miserable afternoon and one they'll need to recover from after the internationals.

Since his arrival at the club, Russell Martin has engraved his possession-heavy style of football at St Mary's but despite dominating the majority of games, have struggled to kill off their opposition, winning by a solitary goal in victories over Sheffield Wednesday, Plymouth and Queens Park Rangers.

Falling short in front of goal so far, Southampton sought to improve their fortunes with the deadline day capture of Ross Stewart for a reported £8m from Sunderland.

What are Ross Stewart's strengths?

Throughout his two-and-a-half-year stay at the Stadium of Light, Stewart was referred to as the "Loch Ness Drogba", a nickname coined by supporters for his predatory instincts in front of goal and his ability to turn up in the big games.

Sunderland striker Ross Stewart.

There were many of those during Sunderland's 21/22 campaign in League One as they battled tooth and nail to get out of the division at the fourth attempt, doing so through the play-offs with Stewart firing 24 goals in 46 appearances.

Following promotion, the 27-year-old picked up where he left off by scoring ten in his first 13 Championship games and although his season was curtailed due to injury, his time in the North East was hugely successful.

While a fully fit Stewart is capable of firing the Saints to promotion, he wasn't the only striker linked to the club this summer, as Martin reportedly sought to sign Joel Piroe from Swansea City in an attempt to rekindle his love affair with the Dutchman.

Piroe, who scored 19 Championship goals last season, would have been a more prolific forward signing than the Scotsman.

How good is Joel Piroe?

Having chalked up an impressive 41 goals in 88 Championship appearances, Piroe was expected to be plying his trade in the Premier League this season, but it was Leeds United who won the race for his signature in a reported £10.5m deal.

Despite his predatory instincts seeing him deliver superb returns in front of goal, it's his interplay that makes him more than a penalty box striker or a poacher. The 24-year-old is capable of operating in a deeper role in-behind with Daniel Farke using him as a number 10 against Ipswich.

Swansea City striker Joel Piroe.

Piroe demonstrates his play-making ability through an array of his passing stats, eclipsing Stewart in most metrics and displaying his ability to link play better than the Southampton man. That, combined with his deadly nature in front of goal makes him a truly dangerous proposition.

Across the 22/23 Championship season, Piroe bettered Stewart for pass completion (81.5%/68%), passes into the penalty area (0.85/0.26), progressive passes (2.40/1.99) and expected assists (0.10/0.03), as per FBref.

While the "clinical" and "dangerous" finisher, as dubbed by journalist Josh Bunting, surpasses Stewart for his efficiency in possession, their shooting and finishing stats align closely together, suggesting that Piroe wouldn't be much of an upgrade in that department, although the sample size is larger for the Dutchman.

Stewart exceeds Piroe for shots on target (1.47/1.38), shots (3.71/3.32) and non-penalty xG (0.62/0.38) but these are fine margins when it comes to shooting as Piroe's exploits at Championship point towards a player who is consistently lethal in front of goal.

With almost one goal every two games, signing the now Leeds star would have guaranteed consistent returns, whereas the recent part of Stewart's career has been blighted by injury troubles so it could take him a while to get up to speed.

When the season is concluded in May, it's highly likely that these two won't be far behind the summit of the Championship scoring charts but given what Piroe could have brought to Martin's possession-based system, perhaps he's the one that got away this summer.
