Newcastle keen to sign "incredible" defender; Eddie Howe’s a big fan

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is keen to bring in a new defender at St James' Park and he could be available in January due to his contractual situation at his current employers, according to reports.

What's the latest news involving Newcastle?

The Magpies were embroiled in some high-profile transfer pursuits over the course of the summer and were rebuffed in an ambitious approach to try and bring in Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella, according to CaughtOffside.

The report states that the Italy international could be available for around £77 million next year amid further interest from Liverpool and Chelsea in his signature.

Football Insider report that Newcastle United are close to handing Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes a new contract in the North East, which would make him the best-paid player in the history of the club. The 25-year-old currently earns £120,000 per week on the books of Newcastle United and is set to receive a whopping £200,000 per week contract renewal, with a breakthrough believed to be close in negotiations.

Guimaraes has been a key player for Newcastle United since arriving on Tyneside, registering ten goals and six assists in 61 appearances across all competitions for the Magpies, as per Transfermarkt.

Times Sport have also claimed that new Newcastle signing Harvey Barnes is said to be mulling over a potential international allegiance switch from England to Scotland after growing frustrated at his lack of opportunities under Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate.

Scotland are on the verge of qualifying for EURO 2024 and Barnes, who is eligible due to his grandparents, could be tempted by the possibility of working under Steve Clarke in Germany next summer representing the Tartan Army.

Who could Newcastle United look to sign?

According to Football Insider, Newcastle United have an active interest in Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly and are keen on striking up a move for the defender, who is also on the radar of Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

The Cherries may be forced to cash in on Kelly in January due to his contract at the Vitality Stadium being set to expire next year; however, interest from Premier League clubs would ensure Bournemouth were able to recoup a fee, with only foreign clubs able to sign players on a pre-contract agreement. Howe is also said to be a big fan of the player.

Lloyd Kelly

Kelly, who has been hailed as "incredible" by former Bournemouth boss Gary O'Neil in the past, has featured 119 times for Bournemouth across his time on the South Coast, registering two goals and seven assists, as per Transfermarkt.

As per FBRef, the Bristol-born defender has excelled in comparison to his positional peers across Europe's top five divisions in the art of clearances, making an average of 4.14 per 90 minutes in the last 365 days, putting him in the 99th percentile for this metric.

90min state that the Magpies could look to bring in Kelly in January as a solution to their injury problems in defence, which have affected both Fabian Schar and Sven Botman, magnifying their need to add some solid depth to Howe's rearguard to avoid being caught short, making this one to watch.

Sydney Sixers cruise to second straight WBBL title

Sydney Sixers dominated Perth Scorchers from the start to lift their second Women’s Big Bash League title in three seasons, drawing inspiration from the exemplary bowling of Sarah Coyte

Sydney Sixers dominated Perth Scorchers from the start to lift their second Women’s Big Bash League title in three seasons, drawing inspiration from the exemplary bowling of Sarah Coyte after she returned to the team late in the tournament following a much-publicised departure from the game for mental health reasons.Electing to bat, the Scorchers found the early going hard on an Adelaide Oval pitch offering some moisture to the bowlers, and once Coyte struck to deceive and dismiss Elyse Villani, the West Australian side was never able to build the partnerships capable of building a defendable total. Left with a modest chase, the high-powered Sixers batting line-up was never likely to be tested, and galloped home to victory with five overs to spare.Pressure brings wicketsBoth captains had spoken about the need to cope with the pressure of the occasion on the eve of the final, with the memory of Adelaide Strikers’ horrid batting collapse – 6 for 3 – in the semi-final still fresh in everyone’s minds. To that end, the Scorchers started their innings intent on not losing early wickets after Villani won the toss, while at the same time the Sixers bowlers were intent on tight lines and the denial of runs. Runs duly came at a trickle, and only three boundaries were struck in the Powerplay. The longer this Mexican stand-off went on, of course, the more it favoured the Sixers, who created pressure of their own in the minds of Villani and Nicole Bolton through the knowledge of the power contained up the top of their batting line-up. Ultimately, it was this pressure that forced Villani into error, advancing to a change of pace from Coyte while failing to reading either the length or the subtle movement away from the bat. Alyssa Healy pounced on the stumping chance virtually before Villani had the chance to turn around, and clapped her gloves triumphantly in the prone Scorchers’ ears as she ran past to celebrate the vital first breakthrough.Coyte’s day in the sunThe Sixers’ grip on proceedings went from firm to vice-like in the first ball of the eighth over when Kim Garth seamed a ball back on the line of middle and leg to pin Bolton lbw, with Ellyse Perry following up by coaxing an edge from the bat of Natalie Sciver. When Megan Banting fell to Erin Burns, three wickets had fallen in as many overs, Scorchers’ innings well and truly in free-fall.Sarah Coyte celebrates a wicket with team-mates•Getty Images

Chief beneficiary of the game’s decisive turn towards the Sixers was to be Coyte, who followed up her first over deception of Villani by winning in lbw verdict against Thamsyn Newton and then bowling a driving Heather Graham five balls later. Coyte’s figures of 3 for 17 summed up the Sixers’ dominance, while at the same time capping a wonderful return to the game, following her decision to step away from the game in early 2017 to deal with personal health issues. In four matches, she has scooped 10 wickets at a meagre average of 8.10, providing the fresh impetus the Sixers needed towards the end of a lengthy campaign.A simple chaseDefending 99, the Scorchers needed early wickets but were unable to take them, thanks to Perry and Healy. The Sixers innings began in the manner that Villani had perhaps envisaged for the Scorchers, starting slowly then building steadily to a peak of shotmaking aggression – helped of course by the fact the modest target did not bring too much in the way of scoreboard pressure. As is customary, Healy went a little more eagerly for her shots – striking three fours in the fifth over – while Perry played within herself, and together they had taken the required runs down to a mere 36 from 59 balls when Healy was stumped for a 32-ball 41.The remaining runs were gobbled up without much fuss by Perry and Ashleigh Gardner, who reminded all of the powerful hitting that had made her such a key force in the tournament by depositing Katherine Brunt for a towering six over midwicket. Perry was left to hammer the winning runs with a pair of boundaries, meaning the Sixers had won with a yawning nine wickets and five overs to spare.’Relaxed but focused’Sciver summed up the Scorchers’ anguish at saving their most inept performance for the biggest of days, and agreed the slow going in the early overs had made a rush of wickets more likely. “In a situation like that, it’s always difficult not to lose wickets in clusters and unfortunately we managed to do that a couple of times and never really got a partnership going, which is what has been one of our strengths throughout the season, so not our best batting day,” she said. “It’s a bad day of cricket really from us and we had to play it on the biggest stage in this tournament. Previously, the girls have done brilliantly and throughout the season different people have stood up…we couldn’t have played any worse really.”As for Perry, there was relief at putting it all together in the final, a year after the Sixers had won far more narrowly over the Scorchers. “It was one of our best games of the season certainly, we started the tournament with a bit of a bang in Sydney when we put on 242 and to finish in the fashion we did today was absolutely awesome,” she said. “I thought our composure was absolutely outstanding today, we seemed quite relaxed but really focused in the field. In hindsight, it was probably not a bad toss to lose because there was just a bit of moisture in the wicket early and I think it just held up and gave our bowlers enough to bowl at Elyse and Nicole. We kept the pressure on them and it showed in the end.”Perry reserved special praise for Coyte, and also noted the initiative of the coach Ben Sawyer, who first saw the possibility of bringing Coyte back into the fold. “Firstly, it was an absolute masterstroke from Ben Sawyer, our head coach, he noticed she’d been playing some grade cricket and gave her a call and asked her if she’d be interested,” Perry said. “Secondly, and most importantly it’s been an inspiration not only for the girls in our team but for lots of young girls who’ve watched her play. Coytey’s got an extraordinary story and she’s so strong and such a fighter and been really brave in what she’s gone through and how she’s spoken about it as well. To see her perform on the biggest stage and slot back into the team is a true testament to the character of her and how brave she is.”

O duelo

Arsenal: Injury update as "monster" player set to miss Tottenham clash

Some worrying team news has come out of Arsenal ahead of their crunch Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur this weekend, with a key player set to miss out.

Arsenal vs Tottenham preview

Mikel Arteta's side, after battling with PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday night, will now take on arch rivals Spurs in the north London derby on Sunday.

Arsenal head into the contest in good stead, having won four out of their opening five league games with top flight victories over Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, Man United and Everton.

Arteta's men remain unbeaten despite not being at full throttle; grinding out a narrow three points against the likes of Forest, Palace and Everton.

However, Tottenham enter the contest on a similar run of form and the feeling around Ange Postecoglou's tenure is one of much promise.

Spurs are also yet to taste defeat in the league this season, with Postecoglou's brand of exciting, attack-minded football on display for all to see.

The Lilywhites convincingly beat Bournemouth, Man United and Burnley prior to the international break and displayed real character to see off Sheffield United in the dying seconds of added time last weekend,

This match comes as, arguably, one of the most interesting head-to-heads between the two sides in recent memory.

Arsenal vs Tottenham team news

Arteta has been without a fair few key players lately, including summer signing Jurrien Timber, who suffered an ACL injury on the opening day against Forest.

Arsenal's boss described it as a "huge blow" at the time, with Timber not expected back until far after the new year.

Another player currently sidelined is Mohamed Elneny, who is apparently in the latter stages of his rehab.

“He’s in a good place, obviously it’s been a while and it’s been a very significant injury, but I think he's in the latter stages of that rehab process," said Arteta ahead of PSV.

“He’s been training for almost two weeks with the team and he is in a good place. It’s always great to have him around.”

The Evening Standard, sharing news on Thomas Partey's situation, have an update on the Ghanaian on top of the aforementioned duo.

He will certainly miss Tottenham, as that has come too soon in this stage of his recovery, with the outlet estimating his return date to be around October time.

Partey was a key player for Arsenal last term, standing out as one of their best-performing players per 90 while making 33 appearances.

How good is Thomas Partey?

The midfielder has been praised for his defensive work in the middle of the park.

Partey, who averaged more tackles per match than any of his Gunners teammates in the league last season, was called a "monster" player earlier this year by members of the press.

"Thomas Partey is a defensive monster and controller," wrote journalist Abdu Dilshan Wasike on X in January.

"Usually clubs are partnering 2 players with one of each to have this attribute in their midfield. Arsenal have both qualities in 1 player. He is the best six (6) in the league. MoTM against Newcastle"

It will be a huge boost for Arteta to have Partey back next month, but he will be missed against Spurs this weekend.

Narine Super Over gives Lahore season's second win

Usman Khan’s final-delivery no-ball set up the Super Over, following which Sunil Narine held his nerve with the ball

The Report by Arun Venugopal11-Mar-2018

PSL

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsIn a nutshellIn a wildly oscillating game that frequently blurred the lines between victory and defeat, Lahore Qalandars prevailed over Karachi Kings in the Super Over. After Lahore had made 11 in the Super Over, Karachi were halted in their tracks by Sunil Narine, who unleashed his full complement of tricks. Conceding only two runs off the first five balls, which included the wicket of Colin Ingram, Narine all but ensured Karachi didn’t provide one last twist in an encounter that wouldn’t pause for a moment of calm.Earlier in the night, Lahore experienced the full spectrum of emotions – they came within shouting distance of wrapping up the game, but then thought they stuffed it only to eventually tie the game. Needing 16 to win off the last over, Sohail Akhtar turned up and dialled up the adrenaline with a sequence of 2, 4 and 6 off Usman Khan. With four runs needed off three deliveries, Mitchell McClenaghan ran himself out in pursuit of a bye. With the equation eventually narrowing down to three off one, Akhtar hit one straight down the throat of long on.However, even as Karachi were celebrating, it emerged that Usman had overstepped. More drama ensued as the two batsmen – Akhtar and Gulraiz Sadaf – hadn’t completed the run. Despite the ball being ruled dead with Ravi Bopara, the fielder, having completed the catch before the run was completed, the umpires Aleem Dar and Tim Robinson ruled that Sadaf would be on strike for the last ball. With two needed off the final delivery, Usman nailed his yorker and Sadaf could manage only one as the game went into the Super Over. Just over a week ago, Lahore found themselves on the wrong side of a Super Over. This time they would prove to be second-time lucky.Having put into bat earlier in the night, Karachi found a steady tempo for the major part of the innings. Despite losing opener Joe Denly early on, Karachi prospered from a 72-run stand between Babar Azam and Lendl Simmons. Simmons began with three boundaries driven through the covers off Anton Devcich’s bowling, and settled in with an equal measure of nifty cuts and expansive slogs. By the time he was dismissed in the 12th over, Simmons had made 55 off 39 deliveries. Azam, meanwhile, had a fortuitous moment when he lofted Yasir Shah to mid on where Shaheen Afridi fluffed a sitter. Reprieved on zero, he went on to score his second fifty in three games, a 49-ball 61.Lahore’s chase was moulded on the same template as Karachi’s, as they accumulated runs at a good clip without much extravagance. Agha Salman (50 off 45 balls) played a mature hand with Fakhar Zaman (28) and Devcich (24) rallying around him. Even as it looked like Lahore had this chase covered, Karachi’s bowlers, led by captain Imad Wasim and Bopara, took the pace off and slowed things down. Like Lahore, who had scored only 24 runs from overs 10 to 15, Karachi, too, faltered in this phase to manage only 32 runs.In a bid to up the scoring rate, Salman attempted to clear the deep midwicket fence but was undone by a terrific tag-team effort from the Azam-Simmons duo. Azam took the catch, and realising he was falling over the ropes, scooped the ball back to Simmons. Soon after, with 23 needed off 11 balls, Wasim backpedalled to pluck a fine catch to dismiss Sohail Khan and bumped his head into the turf in the process. Stretchered off the field, he had scans overnight and was kept under observation, which revealed a mild concussion. However, “his vitals are fine”, the PSL tweeted on the afternoon after the game.*Where the match was wonIn a game where there were too many false dawns, the decisive blow was struck by the understated Narine in the Super Over. Despite not having a huge score to defend, Narine wrested the match in Lahore’s favour in the first three deliveries. Starting with a straighter one on the stumps which Simmons couldn’t score off, he got away with a full toss next ball as the batsman could only manage a single off it. The third delivery, to Ingram, was a loopy offbreak that produced a top-edged slog brilliantly held by a diving Mitchell McClenaghan at fine leg. Narine pinned down Simmons once again with a 116 kph delivery and effectively put the lid on the match there and then. The men who won itWhile it is hard to look beyond Narine, it is important to acknowledge Salman’s composure at the top and McCullum’s cool under pressure. After Salman had marshalled the innings, McCullum, coming into bat at No.5, struggled to get his timing right, but managed the impactful strikes, like the ramp six off Usman. In the Super Over, too, his boundary off the penultimate ball from Mohammad Amir gave Lahore some extra cushion after they had lost Zaman early on.Where they standA win for Karachi could have seen them dislodge table-toppers Quetta Gladiators. Instead, they remain on third position with nine points. Lahore Qalandars, meanwhile, are officially out of the tournament, but have managed to salvage some pride with their second successive win in as many days.*

"Massive risk" – BBC pundit "not sure" by who Arsenal could go and sign

BBC pundit Danny Murphy has said that Arsenal could be taking a "massive risk" after hearing who they now reportedly want to sign.

Who have Arsenal signed in 2023?

The north Londoners enjoyed one of their most productive transfer windows in recent memory over the summer, putting pen to paper on deals for club-record signing Declan Rice, versatile Netherlands defender Jurrien Timber, forward Kai Havertz and goalkeeper David Raya for a total of around £200 million.

The Premier League title hopefuls, following their summer business, are currently boasting a solid start to the new campaign and remain unbeaten over their opening six league matches. Wins over Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, Man United and Everton keep Arsenal in chase with some of the division's big-hitters, with their dropped points coming against city rivals Fulham and Tottenham.

Arsenal managerMikelArteta

The Gunners were stopped in their tracks by Spurs last weekend as their fierce rivals sealed a 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium, coming back from a goal down on two occasions courtesy of their captain Son Heung-min – who bagged a brace. Mikel Arteta, speaking after the match, explained his disappointment and how the encounter felt like two dropped points.

"We feel like we lost two points," said the manager.

"It's true there was a lot of change in the dominance of the game, but especially when we had more control and more dominance in the game, and we score the goal, they score straight away. We started quite good, we scored the goal, but straight away we concede. So, emotionally, that was a difficult one to take. I thought we struggled for a period of 10 or 15 minutes later, we lacked a lot of composure with the ball and we made it a basketball game. But I think in the end we pushed, pushed and pushed, but couldn't get the win.

"The hardest thing to do is put the ball in the net. We've done it twice but I think we conceded two really poor goals. At this level, they're going to punish you because they've got top players."

What's the latest Arsenal transfer news?

As Arteta prepares his side for a trip to Bournemouth this weekend, behind the scenes, Arsenal chiefs are identifying transfer targets for the new year. One player to be repeatedly linked with a move is Brentford star Ivan Toney, who could even be central to a part-exchange deal, according to reports this week.

There have also been claims that striker could cost as much as £80 million to prise away from the Bees, a rumour which has worried BBC pundit Murphy as he explains why signing him could be a "massive risk". Speaking to FIVE this week, the ex-Liverpool midfielder said:

“Arsenal are a very intricate footballing side, he hasn’t played in that sort of team. They have a left-footer on the right and a right-footer on the left. They play pretty patterns, they’re not a crossing team. They don’t cross many. Possibly (he could adapt), he would become the main guy and Jesus would have to fit in, but depending on the fee, even though I think he makes the squad stronger. It would be a massive risk to spend £80/90m for him when he’s only had one season in a team that is set up for him and ask him to become this wonderful, intricate footballer. I’m not sure."

Toney scored 20 league goals last season and has been praised by his manager Thomas Frank as a "remarkable" player, and it looks as if a deal will be one to watch.
