"Will do it" – Ian Wright thinks "amazing" £100m player could join Arsenal

Arsenal could well bring in an "amazing" £100 million player, thinks club legend and Match of the Day pundit Ian Wright.

Who are Arsenal looking to sign in January?

Life for the north Londoners could barely be any sweeter on the pitch, having won six out of a possible eight Premier League games while remaining unbeaten. They've tasted victory at the expense of Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, Everton, Man United, Bournemouth and league champions Man City most recently.

Draws against Fulham and Tottenham only slightly dampen the near-perfect domestic record. It's quite safe to assume that Arsenal, based off what we've seen so far, will be contending for the league title once again this season. However, reports have suggested that they wish to strengthen in key areas this season, namely the centre-forward position. One of the players who is repeatedly mentioned is Brentford star Ivan Toney, who is currently serving a ban for alleged gambling breaches. They're also after Wolves winger Pedro Neto, with former Gunners striker Kevin Campbell telling Curtis Shaw TV that the club need to sign both.

"Two players that we know can come in and hit the ground running are Toney and Neto. £60 million. You take Toney all day long. £80 million. If someone says pay that and you win the title, then you pay it, don’t you," said Campbell.

“You get Neto as well. You solve the problem of the [Bukayo] Saka dilemma. And [Gabriel] Martinelli because Neto can play on that side as well. But Toney is the key. He offers that big and strong striker, who can cause Man City problems. We have seen him cause Liverpool problems.”

Ivan Toney transfer news

Toney, who scored 20 league goals for Brentford last season, prior to his ban, has been praised by Bees boss Thomas Frank and Toney's transfer value is £100 million, according to recent reports. Indeed, Toney's manager rates him very highly, having called him an "amazing" and "remarkable" player.

"Ivan is amazing in many, many aspects,” said Frank to Brentford's official website.

"The way he copes with pressure and distractions is amazing. He’s been scoring goals, performing for the team and driving the team. He’s remarkable. I can only talk about the Ivan that I see every day around the place and he’s a fantastic person around the group. He’s got that unique emotional intelligence to be aware of all the players, and every staff member."

It's clear to see why Arteta and Edu have taken a keen interest in his signing, as widely reported by the latest Toney to Arsenal transfer news. Now, Gunners fan favourite Wright has suggested to the Stick to Football podcast that it's a deal which could well happen. He said:

"The Toney links don’t go away because you can see that’s probably the last bit in the jigsaw. It’s obvious for everyone to see that this is the last piece. He will do it if it can be done.”

Sri Lanka hope to make history in the Caribbean

They have never won a Test series in the West Indies, and considering the hosts’ form, they have a good chance to break that duck now

Andrew Fidel Fernando05-Jun-20182:30

‘I want to break Brian Lara’s 400’

Big PictureThat we have got to the eve of this first Test with no changes to the schedule is a small miracle. Sri Lanka-West Indies matches are prone to postponement and cancellation. Broadcasters feel the markets too small, and the time difference too great to sustain long-format cricket between these teams. They would rather see them play T20 cricket, or perhaps ODIs. But somehow, this time, the series appears as if it will be played as planned. It is not melodramatic to suggest that this could be the last ever three-Test encounter between these sides, because that way goes the cricket schedule.Considering the Test series planned for 2013 was turned into an ODI tri-series, the last time West Indies and Sri Lanka met for Test cricket in the Caribbean was in 2008. Back then Ramnaresh Sarwan was still playing, Chaminda Vaas was a new-ball bowler, and Rangana Herath was just a… okay, he was already pretty old. Point is, things have changed. West Indies’ top order is more brittle now – Roston Chase sporting their best average, a tick over 38. Sri Lanka’s fast bowling stocks have been depleted – Lahiru Kumara, their second most-experienced seamer with only nine Tests to his name. Both teams also know what a struggle it can be to rebuild following great players’ exits. It is difficult to pin down form going into this Test, because it has been so long since either team has played. West Indies’ most-recent Test was all the way back in the first half of December. Sri Lanka’s had wrapped up in early February. The one fact to recommend the visitors in this series is that Tests are probably their best format now, with a settled top order in place, and an effective spin-department led by Herath. In their last three series, all of which were overseas, Sri Lanka won against Pakistan, drew two matches against India, and beat Bangladesh – all of which are creditable achievements. West Indies, meanwhile, have won only one series in their last 11 – against Zimbabwe.Sri Lanka, for all the greats that have played for them over the years, have never quite managed to win a series in the Caribbean. Strangely, although they had one of their worst years in 2017, they have arrived on the islands feeling as if they have a good chance on this attempt. But as England found out last year at Headingley, this West Indies side has the capacity to surprise.3:21

Form guideSri LankaWDDLD (completed matches, most recent first)
West Indies LLDWLIn the spotlightDon’t say it too loudly, but there is a little of the regality of the old West Indian batsmen in 21-year-old Guyanese, Shimron Hetmyer. He hasn’t cracked the top level. Not even close. But there are glimpses of a wonderful player in his imperious pull shots, and his dismissive drives. In New Zealand last December, he had faced down one of the best attacks around and hit a sparkling 66 to light up the Basin Reserve. The issue for Hetmyer is that there is no consistency yet. His other scores in that series were 13, 28 and 15. Perhaps, against a weaker Sri Lanka pace attack, he can put a few more good performances together, and kick his career into a higher gear.Dinesh Chandimal took over the captaincy at one of Sri Lanka’s lowest ebbs, and within a few series, he has begun to make something of this team. His own batting has been crucial to the cause. Once a producer of flashy fifties, he is now workman-like to a fault, batting slow, batting long, often bailing innings out, sometimes even grinding down the opposition bowlers for other batsmen to take advantage of their exhaustion. He has already overseen an important series victory over Pakistan, in the UAE, but the prospect of achieving a series win in West Indies – something no other Sri Lanka captain has done – may be special motivation.Roshen Silva and Niroshan Dickwella prepare for a hit in the nets•Getty Images

Team newsThe two fresh entrants into the squad, opener Devon Smith and wicketkeeper-batsman Jahmar Hamilton, may be left out of the playing XI. Devendra Bishoo is the only specialist spinner in the squad, so in Trinidad, he is likely to have a place in the XI.West Indies (possible): 1 Kraigg Brathwaite, 2 Kieran Powell, 3 Shimron Hetmyer, 4 Shai Hope, 5 Roston Chase, 6 Shane Dowrich (wk), 7 Jason Holder (capt.), 8 Devendra Bishoo, 9 Miguel Cummins, 10 Kemar Roach, 11 Shannon GabrielDhananjaya de Silva, who delayed his departure to the West Indies because of the murder of his father, may have arrived too late to be available for the first Test. If he doesn’t take his spot at No. 3, Kusal Perera could be deployed there. Uncapped Mahela Udawatte might take the injured Dimuth Karunaratne’s place at the top of the order. Sri Lanka also have a difficult decision to make on which of their offspinners they should field. Akila Dananjaya is the more attacking option, but Dilruwan Perera’s batting may earn him the spot.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Kusal Mendis, 2 Mahela Udawatte, 3 Kusal Perera, 4 Roshen Silva, 5 Dinesh Chandimal (capt.), 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 8 Dilruwan Perera, 9 Rangana Herath, 10 Suranga Lakmal, 11 Lahiru GamagePitch and conditionsThe weather in Port-of-Spain is expected to be good for the majority of the game, with the temperature in the low 30C range. The pitch generally takes a bit of turn.Stats and trivia Chandimal has an average of 48.5 across his 10 Tests as captain, against an average of 42.33 when he is not leading. Sri Lanka have played only six Tests in the West Indies in total, winning only one of those games, in 2008. All their series before this one were restricted to two Tests only. West Indies, however, have won only two of their last 12 Tests at home.

Virat Kohli drops the mic as England drop their guard against R Ashwin's wiles

England were in a position from which to dominate India, but then gifted the ascendancy back to an alert and hungry visiting side

The Report by Sidharth Monga01-Aug-2018On Yorkshire Day, two Yorkshire batsmen put England in a position from which to dominate India, but then gifted the ascendancy back to an alert and hungry visiting side. The moment of inspiration came from India’s captain Virat Kohli who ran out Joe Root – once again between 50 and 100 – with a direct hit from deep midwicket, after which this side’s biggest match-winner R Ashwin, took out the dangerous duo of Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler. He ended the day needing one wicket to become the first India spinner to take a five-for in England since 2002. England ended the day at 285 for 9, having at one stage been 216 for 3.What will worry England is that they lost wickets to soft dismissals on a slow and low pitch that looked as though it ought to have assisted India more: seven of the nine wickets to fall were either bowled or lbw, which is India’s speciality. But what will infuriate England is that Root and Jonny Bairstow had the attack at their mercy, going at more than six an over in the final session until Root responded to Bairstow’s call for a second run that didn’t exist. It all went downhill for them thereafter.Kohli is ruthless. He doesn’t think twice before accepting such gifts, having all too often been part of the side on the receiving end of such lapses. The moment arose after Bairstow pushed Ashwin towards deep midwicket where Kohli, to judge by his leisurely initial response, didn’t appear to have considered the possibility of the batsmen attempting a second run. But then he heard the call, and all those hours of strength training kicked in. He went from leisure to business in no time, and Root would have struggled even without a stutter. The exclamation point was how Ashwin judged that the shy was going to hit the stumps, and let the ball go through MS Dhoni-style.Kohli seized the moment to remind Root, and all of England, of his bat-drop celebration after he had finished off the Headingley ODI. He blew kisses. He pressed his finger to his lips. And then he uttered the words that might just be the most enduring ones for this series: “Mic drop?” followed by two words that lip-readers will tell you were of four and three letters, the second of which is “off”. There has been so much talk of Kohli’s batting and his record in England, but here Kohli the fielder had opened the door for India to barge through.Joe Root’s dive couldn’t save him from being run out•Getty Images

Even before this brilliance in the field, Kohli had had a lively start to his day. He dropped Cheteshwar Pujara from India’s starting XI, picked only one spinner, and announced to the world that he wouldn’t look back and regret it if things went wrong. We make a decision and try to make the best of it, he has always said. And after losing the toss, his new-ball bowlers were losing their discipline when he surprised everybody by bringing Ashwin on in the seventh over of the Test.Ashwin had two left-hand batsmen in his sights, a damp pitch that can often offer turn, and a new ball prone to natural variation when it lands on the seam. Out of India’s limited-overs sides, under pressure every time a wristspinner does well with the white ball, and always reminded of his record in these parts of the world, Ashwin showed none of that anxiety. In only his second over, Ashwin set Alastair Cook up beautifully: a quick arm ball to push him back, a slow offbreak to lure him forward, another arm ball, another offbreak, and then the killer offbreak that pitched on middle, much straighter than the rest. The bat face closed ever so slightly, and the slow ball, given every chance to turn by the revs and the seam position towards short third man, spun past the defensive prod.As the early moisture dried out, England’s batsmen – Root and Keaton Jennings, the latter dropped on 9 by Ajinkya Rahane at slip – the turn went out and the batsmen became more comfortable. Ishant Sharma was too short, Umesh Yadav too straight, and it was left to Mohammed Shami, returning from personal problems and a failed fitness test, to keep India in the game. He did so with the wickets of Jennings and Malan in the middle session, but an urgent Bairstow had begin to take the momentum away from India in the second hour of the middle session.India looked ragged at the start of the final session. Shami was down on pace. Ashwin was attacked. Root and Bairstow were scoring at will. Even defensive fields were not working. It looked like Root had gone past those concentration breaks that had resulted in his last 10 half-centuries not getting translated into hundreds. And then they took the ill-advised second. Moments later, Bairstow dragged Umesh onto his own stumps.Ashwin is often criticised for using too many variations. A lazy bit of advice that every expert gives to him is to concentrate only on the offbreak. Here he showed he didn’t need that advice. He used his variations, a lot of them, but he also showed he is a bowler at peace with, and in total control of, his game. The arm ball with the upright seam swerved beautifully away from the right-handers. He even bowled a front-of-the-hand legbreak that swung back in. And then natural variation did the trick. He bowled an offbreak that turned enough to beat Buttler’s inside edge but not enough to miss the leg stump. Stokes played hesitantly at a long hop, offering a return catch. Not long before, it had seemed India were in for a long leather hunt on day two, but with England suddenly in freefall, it seemed the India openers might have to take guard on day one itself.Allrounder Sam Curran kept that from happening, but Ishant and Ashwin inflicted one final blow each before stumps to make the day India’s beyond any reasonable doubt.

‘O treinador cobra (por melhor rendimento). O Rodrigo Caetano cobra e eles mesmo se cobram. Há uma mobilização total para a partida (contra o América-MG), pois todos sabem que é uma forma de buscar uma reação rápida para os problemas que estão acontecendo. O nosso ambiente é muito bom no vestiário. Vamos para Belo Horizonte para tentar reverter esse cenário, que não é bom’, lamentou.

Spurs: TalkSPORT pundit slams "very frustrating" star Ange loves to play

TalkSPORT pundit Ally McCoist has said that Ange Postecoglou is regularly selecting a "very frustrating" Tottenham Hotspur player.

Tottenham fixtures and results

Spurs' climb under their popular new manager has continued after the international break with a 2-0 win over Fulham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday. Goals from Son Heung-min and summer signing James Maddison gifted Postecoglou his seventh win from nine Premier League, and they're now gearing up for another London clash against Crystal Palace this Friday.

There have been some suggestions that they could even be title contenders, with Postecoglou officially enjoying the best ever start of any new manager in Premier League history. It's also their best start to a campaign since the 1960/1961 season, where they went on to win a domestic double. Journalist Alex Howell, writing for the BBC this week, most perfectly summed up the joy around Spurs:

"It is unbelievable to think that Tottenham ended last season with an interim manager, without European football to look forward to and then lost their talisman in the summer," wrote Howell.

"The feeling around the club is one of positivity and excitement with the way the team is playing. Ange Postecoglou has led his side to the top of the Premier League after nine games and they are currently undefeated. Under previous manager Antonio Conte, supporters were frustrated with their 'safety first' style of football. There is none of that under Postecoglou, with free-flowing football played by an attacking, fearless team."

The likes of Maddison and Son stand out as two of Postecoglou's key performers over their meteoric, early-season rise; while both Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr have become star regulars after being largely shunned by Conte.

Richarlison update

Other brilliant performers in the squad, like Destiny Udogie, Pedro Porro, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Dejan Kulusevski have been praised for their efforts in a Lilywhites jersey. However, Richarlison, who has featured in every single league game for Spurs so far this season, still continues to divide opinion.

brennan-johnson-richarlison-tottenham-opinion

The Brazilian has contributed well in parts, most notably winning the game against Sheffield United with his goal and assist in the dying minutes of added time. Overall, he's bagged a goal and assist in the top flight, with journalist Paul Brown also tipping him for a big role this season.

"I think he will have a big part to play this season because, with no Kane there, there will be opportunities for the forwards," said Brown to GiveMeSport.

“He can play in more than one role. He could find a niche playing slightly to the left of a centre forward, whether Son or somebody else."

talkSPORT pundit McCoist, though, believes he is a "very frustrating" player at times, and we don't see his "extreme talent" enough.

“I just think he can be a very frustrating player, I really do," said the Rangers legend (as transcribed by The Boot Room).

“As you say there’s nobody doubting there’s a player in there with extreme talent. I just don’t think we see it enough.”

Simon Harmer, M Vijay bring Essex back into contention

Simon Harmer’s best figures of the season and Murali Vijay’s second half-century of the match have given Essex a chance of toppling Nottinghamshire

ScorecardSimon Harmer’s best figures of the season and M Vijay’s second half-century of the match have given Essex a chance of toppling Nottinghamshire in their Specsavers County Championship meeting at Trent Bridge.Harmer took 6 for 87 as Notts were bowled out for 337 in their second innings, leaving the defending champions requiring 282 for victory.Kraigg Brathwaite made 68 for the hosts and Steven Mullaney scored 53 before becoming Harmer’s fifth victim.Vijay, who hasn’t played since making a pair for India in the second Test of the recent series against England, followed up his first-innings 56 with an undefeated 73 as Essex closed on 147 for 1.The home county began the day in good shape on 116 for 1 but lost three wickets, all to Harmer, during the opening session. Luke Fletcher, the nightwatchman, had an eventful time at the crease. He was struck on the elbow by a wild throw from Nick Browne and also reprieved after being caught off a no-ball from Matt Coles.Nevertheless, the local favourite, a few days away from his 30th birthday, skilfully frustrated the Essex attack for more than two hours in making 39.Brathwaite, the West Indies’ opener, reached his third half-century in as many matches for Notts, getting there from 117 balls with his ninth boundary. The opener stroked three more fours before being pinned on the crease by Harmer’s offspin. Fletcher’s lengthy vigil ended in the same manner and Jake Libby lost his off stump for 15.Simon Harmer gets a hug from Nick Browne•Getty Images

Resuming from their lunchtime score of 208 for 4, Notts lost their fifth wicket to an unexpected source. The visitors opened the session with the part-time spin of Tom Westley and the hunch paid off as Ben Duckett fell lbw for 17.Harmer returned to the attack soon after the second new ball had been taken and bagged three further wickets as Notts lost their momentum. Tom Moores was stumped for 15, after a stand of 68 with Mullaney, who nicked the spinner into the hands of wicketkeeper Adam Wheater. The former South African international then had Lyndon James caught by Ryan ten Doeschate at short leg before Jamie Porter removed Samit Patel and Mark Footitt to polish off the innings.Essex began their pursuit of 282 with the early loss of Browne, playing all around a full-swinging delivery from Footitt. Vijay and Westley, who is undefeated on 45, negotiated the rest of the final session in adding an unbroken 130 together to put Essex firmly on the way towards their first victory at Trent Bridge since 2003.
