Ali Khan, Jones script historic USA win; Singapore crush Denmark

USA men’s team defeated Kenya for the first time in history as they vaulted past Oman to the top of the tournament table by virtue of a superior net run-rate

Aaron Jones heaves a six over long-on•Peter Della Penna

A half-century from Aaron Jones was followed by a searing spell of fast bowling from Man of the Match Ali Khan as USA men’s team defeated Kenya for the first time in history, to win by a whopping 154 runs, vaulting past Oman to the top of the WCL Division Three tournament table by virtue of a superior net run-rate.Prior to Monday, USA had been bowled out by Kenya in three previous losses in one-day cricket for totals of 162, 32 and most recently 63 in just 18.3 overs at Abu Dhabi last December. Kenya sent USA in at the toss hoping to do more of the same but USA capitalized on poor fielding from the opposition for the second match in a row to build up a commanding total of 254.Kenya gave away more than 100 runs in missed chances in the field to let USA off the hook. Monank Patel, who survived a missed run-out chance on the third ball of USA’s win over Uganda to make 107, was dropped on a return chance by Elijah Otieno in the third over on 9 and went on to make 25.An even more costly let-off was given to Steven Taylor, who should have been run-out for 12 at 69 for 2 but captain Shem Ngoche’s throw from 15 yards at midwicket missed by a whisker, and he went on to make 41 off 34 balls. However, the biggest reprieve of the day was given to Jones. The Barbados-based batsman had been out edging behind a cut for 4 against Uganda and gave a carbon-copy chance on 14, but on this occasion Kenya wicketkeeper Irfan Karim could not hang on.Jones battled through the rest of Ngoche’s spell, reaching 34 off 99 balls before slogging Dhiren Gondaria’s part-time spin for six over long-on for his first boundary. It began a stirring flurry in which Jones struck 35 off his next 19 balls, including two more sixes over long-on.USA were 182 for 4 after 44 overs before Hayden Walsh Jr provided a similar burst, hitting a pair of sixes and fours down the ground in the 45th off Rakep Patel to spark a sequence of 63 runs in four overs, taking USA past 200. A belated Kenya fightback resulted in USA bowled out by the final ball, though 254 was more than enough to defend behind their dynamic pace attack led by Khan. The Ohio fast bowler, who surged to stardom through the Global T20 Canada and CPL this summer, overwhelmed Kenya in his opening six-over spell. He started by inducing an edge behind from Narendra Patel, followed by a cunning inswinger that trapped Karim leg before without offering a shot and finally a top-edge to mid-on by Alex Obanda for three wickets in the Powerplay. At the opposite end, captain Saurabh Netravalkar claimed two wickets with disciplined lines and by the end of the ninth over Kenya were 21 for 5 from which they never recovered. They were eventually bowled out for 96 in just 26 overs.Aritra Dutta and Arjun Mutreja’s 140-run opening partnership in just 23 overs after being sent in at the toss gave Singapore a dominant position that they never relinquished in a 94-run win over Denmark on Monday at the Oman Cricket Academy.Dutta made just 23 runs in three matches on his 50-over debut during the Asia Cup Qualifier in Malaysia this August and followed up his 38 against Oman in Singapore’s opening match at Division Three with another impressive effort to top score with 87, including nine fours and three sixes.Denmark did not help matters by missing three chances in the field early in their innings as Singapore’s opening pair continued to heap pressure on their bowling unit. Offspinner Anique Uddin finally broke the partnership with his first ball in the 24th over to deny Dutta a century and claimed Mutreja for 57 six overs later caught at deep midwicket.Fellow spinners Saif Ahmad (3 for 46) and Nicolaj Laegsgaard (2 for 36) helped Denmark fight back further in the field as Singapore failed to last their full 50 overs, eventually being bowled out for 254.Amjad Mahboob took the first of his three wickets in the third over when Zameer Khan was beaten flicking across the line to be pinned lbw for 2. Captain Hamid Shah fought a lone battle from the top, making 85, and he was the ninth man out. He could only watch helplessly while legspinner Anantha Krishna decimated the middle-order with 4 for 37 as Denmark capitulated for 160 in 35.4 overs.

Australia and India play down Kohli v Paine banter

The series had been incident-free on the first seven days, but on the eighth the two captains exchanged a few verbals, which carried on into the ninth day

Sidharth Monga in Perth17-Dec-2018Neither camp believes any line of personal decency was crossed during on-field exchanges between Tim Paine and Virat Kohli during the Perth Test between Australia and India. The series had been incident-free on the first seven days, but on the eighth the two captains exchanged a few verbals, which carried on into the ninth day, and paused momentarily with a cheeky Josh Hazlewood saying Kohli was not the most prized wicket for Australia. It all possibly started in Perth on the third day with Kohli telling Paine he was staring at a 2-0 deficit if he messed up with the bat. Paine responded with telling Kohli he had to bat last on this pitch. The needle continued into the fourth morning where the umpires had to intervene. There nearly was physical contact when Kohli and Paine’s paths crossed as they looked to field the ball and take a single respectively. Two subplots to these confrontations arguably made it bigger than it might have been. Australia find themselves under intense scrutiny for their behaviour after the events in Cape Town and the culture review. The confrontation, coming as it did when India started to feel they were falling behind for the first time in the series, could possibly be seen as a cynical attempt to push the Australian buttons.Australia’s concentration on Kohli – not just the players, but the media, the former players, the broadcasters – has at times been excessive with each move of his being scrutinised. Even after getting Kohli out, Paine used his name for banter with M Vijay, basically asking him how he could possibly like Kohli despite his being the captain. At the press conferences at the end of day four, both sides strove to downplay the incidents as “part of the game”, “bit of fun”, and something that shouldn’t be read too much into. “I think it was all good fun,” Australia fast bowler Hazlewood said. “It’s quite competitive out there as you know, and there’s going to be words from time to time, but it was all in good spirits I think.”Shami was of a similar view. He was asked if he found any inconsistencies with how Australia had promised they would behave and how they have actually gone.”See it is a long match, and there might be some moment where you say something and you get a reply in that moment,” Shami said. “So maybe in that moment, things get heated up but it is not something to be made a big issue out of. According to me, we should leave this here. It is part of the game, and it is a way to enjoy things in the Test match. Sometimes we say things, they get upset and make mistakes. These are the moments, but nothing personal.”Virat Kohli and Tim Paine exchanged a few words•Getty Images

When asked if the Australians started it, Shami refused to commit either way. “If there is no sledging, you won’t enjoy the game, the public won’t enjoy the game. If there is aggression, the match becomes more interesting. It is part of the game. As it should be.”Hazlewood was asked if Australia felt frustrated and if they felt the opposition was trying to capitalise on the scrutiny they were under.”No, I don’t think so,” he said. “I think at stages in a game it is going to get heated from time to time. I think we are pretty confident that we can hold that line that we have talked about as a group. It’s more in the heat of the moment, definitely not a ploy to attack any batsman at any stage. It has been really good so far. Just good banter.”I don’t think we read too much into it, we go about our work as we see fit and the Indians can do what they like. We control what we control, and our behaviour is what we control. We’ll worry about that, and let everything else take care of itself.”In a way, Kohli is under similar scrutiny with all the cameras trained at him, scanning every move, be it celebration, reaction to crowd or banter with the opposition. Shami said they didn’t feel concerned about that, but Hazlewood might have made the cheekiest comment yet about the entire thing.Asked if Australia were risking focusing too much on Kohli alone, Hazlewood left with this reply: “I probably see [Cheteshwar] Pujara as the big wicket as far as when I’m bowling,” Hazlewood said. “The glue that holds them together I think. He has batted the most balls this series, and scored nearly the most runs. I see him as a big wicket and [Ajinkya] Rahane as well. So the Nos 3, 4, 5 as the key wickets, and we see it a bit unstable in the other parts of the order. Certainly not all the focus is on Virat.”

Arteta and Edu now identify very "dangerous" star as "major" Arsenal target

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu have personally identified a new "major" transfer target as they look to shore up another area.

Gunners make 2024 transfer plans

Widespread reports have indicated that the Gunners are aiming to strengthen two key positions in the squad next year – centre-midfield and striker. Thomas Partey's reoccurring injury problems, combined with the lack of a natural out-and-out goalscorer, have prompted rumours that the likes of Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz and Brentford star Ivan Toney are wanted by Arteta.

Arsenal in pole position to sign £85m "machine" for Mikel Arteta

The Gunners are at the front of the queue to sign a prolific striker next summer.

ByChloe Chadwick Dec 6, 2023

Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano believes Arsenal are set to bid for Luiz, despite Villa's unwillingness to sell, as the north Londoners look to reinforce their options in the middle of the park. Meanwhile, it is believed that Toney's agents have already held talks with Arsenal and other interested sides, as the Englishman makes a push to leave in the January window.

The 27-year-old, who bagged 20 league goals last season, is currently serving a ban for alleged gambling breaches but looks set to return in mid-January – which would be a prime time for him to boost Arsenal's title chase.

Ivan Toney

Their dramatic 4-3 win over Luton most recently has propelled Arsenal to the top of the Premier League, but to keep improving as a squad, both Arteta and Edu are working in tandem to upgrade the former's options.

"I'm never ever going to sign a player which Mikel is not comfortable with, never. That's not my style and for sure it's not the Arsenal style," said Edu in an interview with Sky Sports last year.

"If we decide to work together then the decision needs to be together. It's not Mikel's signings, it's not Edu's signings, it's the Arsenal signings so that for me is the most important thing for people to understand.

"I always say people sometimes give the credit to me or to Mikel, but the credit has to go to Arsenal."

Arteta and Edu identify new "major" target in Frimpong

Now, according to a report by Football Transfers, both men and Arsenal have identified a new major target in Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong.

Bayer Leverkusen'sJeremieFrimpongduring the press conference

Frimpong has been linked with Arsenal recently, but it appears he is now a fresh name near the top of their agenda heading into 2024. This comes as Arteta doesn't see either Takehiro Tomiyasu or Ben White as viable future right-backs, leading to Arsenal's interest in Frimpong as a long-term replacement for both men in the position.

Arteta and Edu have apparently earmarked the 22-year-old as a "specialist" full-back option who can also move into the midfield when required.

Frimpong has been praised for his performances in Germany by members of the press.

“At Leverkusen, he plays together with Moussa Diaby on the right side and together they form probably the fastest duo in the Bundesliga,” said journalist Dennis Melzer.

“Leverkusen's attacking play is mostly via the right side. And although opponents try to focus their play on the two of them, Diaby and Frimpong regularly get through.

“Frimpong is also enormously dangerous in front of goal for a nominally ‘defensive’ player. You just have to look at his stats – eight goals in Bundesliga.”

Price tag revealed: Liverpool on alert in new Piero Hincapie transfer claim

Liverpool could renew their interest in a central defender with "really big potential" for one key reason, according to an update from journalist Christian Falk.

Liverpool dealt Matip injury blow

Things have been going so swimmingly for the Reds of late, with Jurgen Klopp's men sitting top of the Premier League and erasing the grim memories of last season.

Liverpool were injury-plagued at times in 2022/23, and unfortunately, a few setbacks have started emerging this time around, not least to Joel Matip, who won't play again this season. The 32-year-old suffered ACL damage during the 4-3 win at home to Fulham earlier this month, and having undergone surgery on the issue, it is clear that his absence will be a long-term one.

Matip's injury blow means that Klopp only has Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez to call upon as proven centre-back options, while Jarell Quansah is fine to be used sporadically, but perhaps not yet experienced enough to enjoy a long run in the side.

It could be that Liverpool look to sign another player in that area in the January transfer window, in order to have that little bit of extra depth, should another injury happen. Goncalo Inacio and Marc Guehi, of Sporting CP and Crystal Palace respectively, are two options that have been mooted in recent weeks, and a new update suggests that another name could also be thrown into the hat due to the news of his release clause.

Liverpool could still sign Piero Hincapie

Speaking to Caught Offside, Falk claimed that Liverpool could still secure the signing of Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Piero Hincapie, revealing that the release clause that exists in his current deal.

Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie.

"Piero Hincapie could be an interesting option for potential suitors again. I’ve heard that he has a release clause of €70m. That’s why he could re-emerge on the table for Premier League clubs like Liverpool and Newcastle. We heard Milan and Roma are also interested in the Leverkusen player."

Hincapie is such an exciting defender – one who has been seen as a transfer target for Liverpool in the past – and €70m (£60m) is a release clause that could possibly even look like a steal further down the line, such is his ceiling as a player.

Partly because of injuries, the Leverkusen ace has struggled to be a key man for his current side this season, only starting two Bundesliga matches, but he is someone who the Reds should look to snap up. The fact that he can also play at left-back is an extra bonus, meaning he could come straight in and provide competition for both Van Dijk and Andy Robertson.

Liverpool in talks to sign "one-man army" midfielder

The Reds have been linked with him in the past.

ByHenry Jackson Dec 15, 2023

Hincapie has been hailed as a "central defender with really big potential" by Simon Rolfes in the past, and at just 21 years of age, there is still so much more to come from him. It is hard to see Liverpool breaking the bank for him in January, however – Klopp could make do with what he has until the end of the season – so a summer deal feels more likely.

Shinwari's four-for helps Pakistan draw level

After the fast bowler routed South Africa for 164, Pakistan aced the chase thanks to Imam-ul-Haq’s 71

The Report by Liam Brickhill27-Jan-2019

Usman Khan goes up in appeal•AFP

Pakistan drew level in their series with South Africa at the Wanderers, inflicting the hosts’ first ever PinkDay defeat as they dominated with bat and ball. Usman Shinwari inflicted most of the damage this morning, starring with 4 for 35 to bowl South Africa out for 164. Imam-ul-Haq then continued his good form with 71 to go with his century in the last match, adding 94 with Babar Azam to guide Pakistan to an eight-wicket victory with more than 18 overs to spare. On a surprisingly helpful pitch, Imam didn’t have it all his way and had to endure probing spells from Dale Steyn and Kagiso Rabada, with Steyn beating his outside edge several times. But the vital breakthrough never came, and eventually the misses turned into hits for both Imam and Fakhar Zaman, who cracked seven boundaries in a run-a-ball 44 – his highest score of the tour so far.Imam contributed just three boundaries to an opening stand that ran to 70 before Fakhar slogged Imran Tahir to Rassie van der Dussen at deep midwicket, Tahir lightening the occasion by dialling Tabraiz Shamsi – on the bench for this game – with Shamsi’s own shoe-phone celebration. Shamsi removed his own shoe in the dugout to receive the call at the other end.The celebration was soaked up by a capacity pink-clad crowd, but that was as good as it got for South Africa, as thereafter Imam settled in and struck three more boundaries to raise his fifth fifty – and second against South Africa – in the 24th over. By then, Pakistan’s target was under fifty and Imam and Babar steadily chipped away it it.Babar pulled Reeza Hendricks’ offspin through square leg for four to raise the fifty stand, and after raising his fifty, Imam stepped down the track to shovel Tahir over long-off for the first six of the innings. A dab to third man brought the teams level, but with the job all but done Imam swiped at Phehlukwayo to be caught behind for 71. Mohammad Rizwan needed just one ball to secure the win, tapping the first he faced through the covers for four to complete the chase.South Africa had a collapse of 8 for 45 to blame for their paltry total. They had looked like getting a lot more when Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis added 101 for the third wicket, but the lower middle order crumbled to spin and pace alike as stand-in captain Shoaib Malik marshalled his troops efficiently.Faf du Plessis raises his bat after getting to fifty•Getty Images

It was Shoaib rather than Sarfraz Ahmed who strode to the middle for the toss ahead of play, with news that Sarfraz had copped a four-match suspension for his racist comment to Andile Phehlukwayo in the Durban ODI. Shoaib decided to bowl first after winning the toss, with Shaheen Shah Afridi making the early incisions before the spinners regained control of the middle overs despite Amla and du Plessis’ efforts and Shinwari then celebrated his return to the playing XI with three wickets in an over to hasten South Africa’s demise. The hosts had been cautiously rebuilding through Phehlukwayo and Rassie van der Dussen’s partnership, but any hopes of a repeat of their century stand in Durban were dashed when Shinwari returned for his third spell of the game and quickly cut through South Africa’s lower- middle order. Van der Dussen was first to go, feathering a slash at one that left him off the seam, and Steyn then lasted all of two deliveries before he was undone by a searing inswinger close to the blockhole. When Rabada was caught in two minds as to whether to play or leave and edged his first ball to Mohammad Rizwan, filling in behind the stumps, Shinwari was on a hat-trick.Beuran Hendricks survived the hat-trick delivery thanks to the thinnest of inside edges onto his pads, but Shinwari had Phehlukwayo caught at slip in his next over and when Tahir slogged Shadab Khan to Imad Wasim at long-on South Africa were out nine short of their full fifty overs. A Wanderers track that was perhaps a little drier than expected played its part, with the spinners finding appreciable grip and Shinwari gaining a hint of reverse-swing in his late spell.Pakistan had needed something special to claw their way back into the match when du Plessis and Amla were at the crease. They came together after Afridi had trapped Quinton de Kock in front of his stumps and then strangled Reeza Hendricks down the leg side in his opening burst. The pair saw the shine off the ball and absorbed pressure and continued to build when the field spread, going to fifty within three overs of each other after the 100 came up in the 23rd over. Du Plessis took on Shadab to reach his milestone with a slog-sweep but perished in the same over as the legspinner won the battle, drawing a top edge to a perfectly placed Mohammad Hafeez at deep midwicket.Imad bowled with asphyxiating control to hold the batsmen to 36 off his 10 overs, and was also rewarded with the wicket of Amla, undone by drift and bowled through the gate for 59. When Mohammad Amir got rid of David Miller cheaply, South Africa were back under serious pressure. Three quick boundaries from van der Dussen and Phehlukwayo threatened a fightback, but Shinwari’s reintroduction brought the innings to a swift end and set up a simple chase to square the series. This was South Africa’s first ever defeat in a PinkDay match, and Pakistan’s first ever win over them in an ODI at the Wanderers. Adding to the colourful occasion – the pink attire being part of a campaign to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer – over R1million was also raised for the Charlotte Maxeke Breast Cancer Care Unit on the day.
