Johnson, Barsby power Brisbane Heat into maiden WBBL final

With five needed off the final ball, Brisbane Heat’s Haidee Birkett plucked a stunner at deep square off Jess Jonassen to deny Sydney Thunder

Brisbane Heat topped Sydney Thunder in a thriller to enter their first-ever WBBL finals. The match came down to the final ball and could have gone the other way, but for a brilliant catch on the deep square leg boundary by Haidee Birkett to dismiss Nicola Carey to secure a four-run win.Heat’s bowlers had stifled the chase on a sluggish pitch, but a late flurry of runs from Carey took them within touching distance. Carey, who had powerfully slog-swept left-arm spinner Jemma Barsby over deep square in the precious over attempted the same shot, off Jess Jonassen. Birkett, sprinting from deep backward square, snatched the ball on the move to send the Heat players into rapturous celebrations.Set 141 for victory, Thunder had looked solid early in the chase, despite losing the dangerous Rachael Haynes in the first over. This was down to Rachel Priest’s blistering 33-ball 44. But Heat kept chipping away at the wickets and used their variations well to strangle the Thunder’s middle order. Alex Blackwell steadied the chase and was just beginning her late inning launch when she holed out to long-on off Jemma Barsby, who took 3 for 23 and was, at one stage, on a hat-trick.Sent into bat, Heat lost three early wickets: Grace Harris holed out to a full toss from Stafanie Taylor, while Beth Mooney and Kirby Short both found leading edges. With the ball stopping in the pitch, sweeps and slog sweeps were employed well by Sammy Jo Johnson, whose 37-run partnership with Jonassen led the recovery. When Johnson was caught at long-on off by Naomi Stalenberg – one of her three catches – Laura Harris chimed in with 32 off 25 to give the Heat a total they could defend. But Johnson – in a brilliant all round performance – hit the deck hard and successfully cramped Haynes into bunting the ball to a diving Dooley to be run out second ball. Naomi Stalenberg put on a sprightly 56-run partnership with Priest until she was fooled by Barsby’s dip and turn and was bowled through the gate.Priest, who had seen Johnson smash the ball over the leg side, employed the same tactic, smiting five boundaries and two sixes, but the shot that brought her success was also her undoing. She was caught at deep square leg by Birkett. The squeeze was on, led by Johnson – who conceded just 12 runs off her 4 overs – and Grace Harris, whose commentary on the Channel 7 player mic was the source for much entertainment. Her laconic insights during the over when she dropped a caught and bowled chance and then bowled a charging Stafanie Taylor were a highlight in a match that had plenty.Just as the Thunder seemed to have succumbed to the strangle, Carey lifted a gear. When she dropped to one knee in the penultimate over and powerfully flat-batted the ball for six the great escape seemed eminently possible. In the end it took a superb piece of fielding to deny her.

21-touch Leeds star who was worse than Meslier let Farke down

Leeds United failed to continue their winning run as they were beaten 1-0 by Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in the Championship on Tuesday night.

Daniel Farke's men had won their previous three league matches heading into the game but were unable to break down a stubborn Black Cats side.

Jobe Bellingham scored the only goal of the game as the likes of Georgino Rutter, Crysencio Summerville, and Joel Piroe were unable to make an impact in the final third.

Whilst Illan Meslier's efforts to keep out the winning goal were questionable, one player who was worse than him for the Whites was winger Daniel James, who let Farke down badly with a poor display.

Illan Meslier's performance against Sunderland in numbers

The French shot-stopper left a lot to be desired for Bellingham's header as he hesitated and opted to stay on his line, which allowed the Sunderland number seven to nod the ball past him with ease.

Meslier could have prevented the chance if he had been decisive and instantly come out to claim the ball and take the man with him if needed after Alex Pritchard's header bypassed the Leeds defence.

However, the former Lorient youngster did make three saves throughout the game and one, in particular, was a stunning stop to deny Bellingham during the first half.

The teenage midfielder brilliantly met a corner and looked to have guided his header into the back of the net only to see Meslier fly across his goal to superbly tip the shot wide with one hand at full stretch.

Dan James' performance against Sunderland in numbers

Meanwhile, James endured a frustrating performance out wide on the right wing as he struggled to get into the game and had virtually no impact at the top end of the pitch.

The ex-Manchester United forward's pace was once described as "frightening" by pundit Trevor Sinclair but Niall Huggins, a former Leeds academy prospect, did not allow him to utilise that in behind him.

Leeds forward Dan James.

James only had 21 touches of the ball in 75 minutes on the pitch and that was the lowest number of touches out of any Whites starter.

The Wales international lost three of his five battles on the ground and failed to attempt, and therefore complete, any dribbles throughout the game.

He also lost possession of the ball eight times from his 21 touches and did not register a single shot on goal, on or off target, or any key passes for his teammates in those 75 minutes.

The 26-year-old forward, who failed with all three of his attempted crosses, was the only member of the starting front four – James, Piroe, Summerville, and Rutter – who did not manage either a key pass or a shot on target to trouble the Sunderland goal.

Therefore, the Welsh whiz was the least effective attacker on the pitch and it was not a surprise to see Jaidon Anthony come on in his place with 15 minutes left to go.

Overall, James let Farke down badly with a disappointing performance out on the wing and was worse than Meslier, who at least had a huge save in the first half to keep his team in the game at that point, as he offered nothing in the final third.

New Zealand pin hopes on Oram

New Zealand will give a late fitness test to Jacob Oram before naming their side for the fourth ODI against Pakistan at Rawalpindi on Friday

Wisden Cricinfo staff25-Feb-2019New Zealand will give a late fitness test to Jacob Oram before naming their side for the fourth ODI against Pakistan at Rawalpindi on Friday (0600GMT, December 5).The series is already decided after Pakistan’s victories in the first three games of the best-of-five rubber, but New Zealand are determined to salvage something from the remaining matches. “Everybody is trying his best out there," Chris Cairns, their stand-in captain, said. "If we can pull off a victory, it will be fantastic. We realise how hard it is when you look at the potential match-winners in both sides … we are not blessed with as many as Pakistan."With the side already weakened by the absence of several regulars, Oram’s fitness is crucial to New Zealand’s hopes of averting a series whitewash. Containing Pakistan’s batsmen has been the biggest problems, and Oram alone has shown capable of doing that to any effect. In the Pakistan camp problems are few and far between at the moment – Inzamam-ul-Haq, the captain, explained that his main concern is to prevent his side mentally switching off. “The boys are showing maturity," he grinned. "I am happy with the way we won the first three and hope not to lose the focus."Pakistan (probable): 1 Imran Farhat, 2 Yasir Hameed, 3 Yousuf Youhana, 4 Inzamam-ul-Haq (capt), 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Abdul Razzaq, 7 Moin Khan (wk), 8 Mohammad Sami, 9 Saleem Elahi, 10 Shabbir Ahmed, 11 Shoaib Akhtar.New Zealand (probable) 1 Craig Cumming, 2 Richard Jones, 3 Mathew Sinclair, 4 Hamish Marshall, 5 Chris Harris, 6 Chris Cairns (capt), 7 Brendon McCullum (wk), 8 Jacob Oram/Matthew Walker, 9 Daniel Vettori, 10 Michael Mason, 11 Kerry Walmsley.

Rangers’ 4/10 dud was a bigger villain than Leon Balogun in Old Firm defeat

Glasgow Rangers slumped to their second Old Firm defeat of the season this afternoon, in a derby which was arguably dominated by a woeful showing by referee Nicky Walsh.

The Gers were uncharacteristically poor, no doubt about it, yet Walsh failed to show Alistair Johnston and Paulo Bernardo second yellow cards following fouls in the second half which may have turned the game on its head.

As it is, the 2-1 defeat is the first for Philippe Clement during his spell in charge of the Light Blues, and it is clear there is still a lot of work to be put in if he aims to challenge Celtic for the Premiership title.

Even amid the frustrations surrounding the officiating, several players underperformed for the club and the display was summarised by Leon Balogun receiving his marching orders in the second half for a foul on Daizen Maeda.

Leon Balogun’s game in numbers vs Celtic

The centre-back partnered Connor Goldson at the heart of the defence and considering he had lost just twice against Celtic prior to the match, it looked like a solid defensive duo.

The defender did win five of his seven duels throughout the clash, yet he lost possession ten times and made just two tackles.

His passing was poor as the Nigerian completed only 18 of his 25 attempted passes and with the hosts pressing the Gers defence at every available opportunity, this made it hard for the veteran to successfully find a teammate.

During the second half, he took a heavy touch which presented Maeda an opportunity to push through on goal, but Balogun wrestled with the Celtic star and brought him down, receiving a red card in the process.

Despite this, it was Cyriel Dessers who was one of the worst Rangers players on the field as he failed to contribute anything meaningful.

Cyriel Dessers’ game vs Celtic in numbers

The 29-year-old was given the nod to lead the line against the Parkhead outfit, but his performance failed to strike fear into the Celtic backline.

9/10 gem outshining everyone in Rangers' player ratings so far for 23/24

There have been few standouts for the Ibrox side during the first half of the season

ByRoss Kilvington Dec 25, 2023

The summer signing missed a major chance during the first half as he found himself through on goal but took too much time to set up a shot and fluffed his lines.

Journalist Jordan Campbell dubbed this lack of composure as “absolutely horrendous” and failing to take key chances like that is what cost the Light Blues during the clash.

Analyst John Walker dubbed Dessers as “atrocious” for his display and during his time on the field, he took just 26 touches, which was 13 fewer than Jack Butland in the sticks – a clear sign of his lack of involvement.

In truth, that is simply not good enough at Parkhead, especially when a win could have closed the gap at the top of the table.

The striker was a liability defensively too, winning just three of his 14 total duels and losing possession six times along with committing four needless fouls and Clement will have some thinking to do ahead of the tie against Kilmarnock next week.

Dessers received a rating of just 4/10 for his display against Celtic, according to the Herald, and having shown some recent signs of improvement under the Belgian coach, this performance firmly places him back at square one.

A debut for new addition Fabio Silva in January can't come soon enough…

Man Utd want to sign Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich ahead of Liverpool

Manchester United could do with some new additions as they continue to navigate an inconsistent run of form and are reportedly eyeing up a high-profile swoop in 2024.

Man Utd's January plans…

Ending the year at the City Ground, Manchester United came up short against a resurgent Nottingham Forest side as Marcus Rashford's equaliser wasn't enough to claim anything in the East Midlands courtesy of strikes either side from Nicolas Dominguez and Morgan Gibbs-White.

Languishing seventh in the Premier League table, it is clear that Erik ten Hag's side could do with some reinforcements once the window opens to freshen things up at Old Trafford. Nonetheless, Red Devils' football director John Murtough revealed at a recent fans forum that his side aren't expected to be too busy in the mid-season market, saying:

"Looking ahead to the January transfer window, we are not expecting it to be particularly busy. There will always be the possibility of deals around the edges of the squad, particularly in terms of finding opportunities for players who are not playing as much football as they would like.

"However, we've always been consistent in saying that we do not see January as the optimal time to do business and our recruitment strategy remains focused on summer windows."

Despite this, names of several players continue to be mentioned in connection with Manchester United as they prepare for a month of incomings and outgoings, with the likes of Mauro Icardi, Jean-Clair Todibo and Serhou Guirassy all believed to be on the radar in the North West. Now, the Red Devils are plotting a potential high-profile deal that could see one of Europe's best midfielders move to Ten Hag's side in 2024.

Man Utd keen on Joshua Kimmich

According to reports from Spain, Manchester United are keen to sign Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich in 2024, who is also being eyed by their rivals Liverpool. The outlet claim that Manchester City and Barcelona have been keen on the Germany international in the past; however, they won't go to insane lengths to land his services and United could make an offer next summer.

Versatile Kimmich is out of contract at the Allianz Arena in 2025 so could be sold on this summer if he doesn't renew his deal at the Bundesliga giants in light of the danger they would face of prospectively losing him on a free transfer.

Labelled "phenomenal" by Jose Mourinho, the Rottweil-born utility man has made 20 appearances in all competitions this season, registering one goal and six assists in the process (Kimmich statistics – Transfermarkt).

Manchester United are no stranger to a statement signing, though if they were able to pull off the capture of Kimmich it could be lauded as, on paper, an impressive deal for the Red Devils.
