Man Utd plotting talks for £103m Eriksen upgrade who’s like Scholes

In a season which has seen Manchester United already turfed out of the Champions League and League Cup, alongside slipping firmly out of the mix for the top four, it has been hard to pinpoint the major issue that has inhibited Erik ten Hag's side.

Much attention has, of course, been centred on an attack which has netted just 24 times in 21 Premier League games so far in 2023/24 – the fourth-worst record in the division – while defensively, the Red Devils have remained rather shaky, notably shipping eight goals in just their last four league outings.

For all those woes at opposite ends of the pitch, the midfield has also come under intense scrutiny ever since the narrow opening weekend win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, with club legend Gary Neville stating that the pairing of Mason Mount and Casemiro were "torn to shreds" in that nervy 1-0 triumph.

While that duo have since been hamstrung by injury in recent months, those who have replaced them have also been particularly underwhelming, with Scott McTominay – who ranks in just the bottom 8% among his European peers for progressive passes per 90 – hardly the most comfortable on the ball, while summer signing Sofyan Amrabat has "disappointed" thus far, in the words of journalist Dean Jones.

A shining light has undoubtedly been the mature displays of 18-year-old sensation, Kobbie Mainoo – who has been dubbed an "unreal" talent by ex-teammate Anthony Elanga – although his experienced colleague Christian Eriksen has been put firmly under the microscope alongside him, notably being hooked before the hour mark against Tottenham Hotspur last time out.

With the 31-year-old Dane also recording the lowest success rate for duels won among all Premier League midfielders, the time may have come to find a more youthful, long-term solution in the centre of the park – something Ten Hag and co may have already turned their attention to.

Man Utd eyeing Eriksen upgrade

According to a report from Football Transfers, United are said to have 'moved a step closer' to sealing the signing of Benfica sensation, Joao Neves, having already struck a deal that will see Alvaro Fernandez head in the opposite direction on an initial loan deal.

The suggestion is that the Old Trafford side are hopeful that such an agreement can help to build positive relations with the Lisbon outfit amid their bid to sign Neves, with the 19-year-old said to be the club's 'leading midfield target'.

Benfica midfielder Joao Neves.

The report reveals that the Portuguese starlet does have a €120m (£103m) release clause in his existing contract that can be activated, although United are seemingly keen to 'enter talks' in the hope of avoiding paying that hefty sum.

While there is no suggestion that a deal can be struck this month, the hope will be that the Red Devils can get their man ahead of next season, helping to rejuvenate a somewhat ageing midfield department.

Joao Neves' style of play

Despite being a rather slight figure at just 5 foot 9, Neves has proven himself to be a fierce operator in the centre of the park for Benfica of late, with data analyst Ben Mattinson describing him as a player who has a "lot of aggression in duels" and is "hard to win the ball off".

The three strikers Man Utd could sign to replace Rasmus Hojlund

Erik ten Hag is on the lookout for a new star to lead the line at Man United.

ByTom Lever Jan 18, 2024

That is evidenced by the fact that the teenager ranks in the top 7% among his peers in leagues comparable with the Primeira Liga for tackles won per 90, as well as in the top 2% for blocks made, indicating that willingness to put his body on the line.

Interestingly, even with his diminutive stature, the in-demand youngster also ranks in the top 11% for aerial duels won, further proof of the battling presence that he can provide to Ten Hag's ranks.

It is on the ball, however, where Neves appears to thrive, with Mattinson stating that the three-cap Portugal international reminds him of "[Paul] Scholes in some ways", having been described as someone who would bring "tenacity and technical ability" to this floundering United side.

That likeness to the United icon – who is also just 5 foot 6 – is certainly high praise indeed, with Scholes arguably having been the "best midfielder of his generation", according to Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola.

Much like Mattinson's prior assessment of Neves, the Englishman was also a tough yet silky operator when in his pomp, with current Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez previously stating:

“Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything. He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn’t give possession away."

Trying to emulate the success of a player who won a plethora of major honours in a glittering spell at the Theatre of Dreams is a tough task, although such a comparison merely demonstrates the young diamond that United could have on their hands.

How Joao Neves compares to Christian Eriksen

As stated previously, a key issue with Eriksen of late has been his lack of athleticism and fragility in the centre of the pitch, with the former Spurs man winning just 32% of his total duels this season in the Premier League, including winning just 29% of his aerial duels.

Neves, meanwhile, is far more robust having won 58% of his total duels and 57% of his aerial duels in the Portuguese top flight, ensuring he could offer a more natural defensive presence than the current United man, if a deal was to be agreed.

On the ball too, Neves also seemingly has the edge in certain metrics, notably possessing the ability to drive forward from deep as he averages 1.4 successful dribbles per game from his 17 appearances, while Eriksen averages just 0.2 in that regard from 15 league outings.

The pair both have one goal and one assist apiece, yet Neves edges his veteran counterpart with regard to chances created (three v one), while surprisingly, it is also the Portuguese gem who appears to be more composed in possession with a pass accuracy rate of 90% – far ahead of the Dane (83%).

Despite his relative youth, all the signs point to the Benfica teen being a potential upgrade on Eriksen if a deal is to be struck this summer, with United having potentially found the figure who can partner Mainoo for the foreseeable future in Manchester.

While that reported £103m fee is rather eye-watering for one so young, Neves' current form – and apparent likeness to Scholes – explains why he is such a worthwhile target.

Three dream replacements if Wilfried Gnonto still leaves Leeds

It's no secret at Elland Road that Wifried Gnonto has longed for a move away from Leeds United in the past, the Italian attacker even taking matters into his own hands last year by refusing to don a Whites strip in a bid to get a deal out of the club over the line.

Yet, in the present, Gnonto could be close to securing a new contract extension regardless of the rumour mill this transfer window suggesting that he could have been on the move away from the club and finally back up to the Premier League.

Daniel Farke's Championship promotion hopefuls will wait with bated breath to see if their previously wantaway winger does commit himself to the Leeds cause, knowing that many twists and turns could still possibly occur.

Leeds forward Wilfried Gnonto.

With that in mind, Farke could well still want reinforcements to bolster the right wing spot at the club regardless of whether or not Gnonto stays or departs owing to assembling the strongest possible squad capable of promotion.

Here are three Gnonto upgrades he could well attempt to sign with the clock precariously ticking ever closer to the window slamming shut…

1 Option 1: David Brooks

David Brooks

David Brooks would certainly be viewed as an improvement on Gnonto, the silky Welshman boasting a Championship promotion on his CV which could make him very useful to Farke's plans.

His numbers at second tier level also help, the current AFC Bournemouth attacker helping himself to nine goals and 11 assists from 69 appearances in the division over his career to date.

In contrast, when Gnonto has been selected this season by his German manager, the Leeds winger has only mustered up a single goal and assist for his troubles.

Brooks could also give Daniel James healthy competition if signed, pushing his fellow compatriot all the way for a spot in the starting eleven.

Once referred to as a "wizard" by Bournemouth Echo journalist Jack Tanner for his skilful nature on the pitch, Leeds will be hoping Brooks has more magic up his sleeve when pulling on a Whites strip potentially with the slick 26-year-old arguably an upgrade on Gnonto.

2 Option 2: Manuel Benson

Manuel Benson

Leeds could well fancy signing Manuel Benson to enhance their squad away from Gnonto this month also, the Burnley winger an absolute revelation at second tier level last campaign under Vincent Kompany.

Scoring 12 times and assisting a further three goals, the Belgian machine was instrumental in his Clarets side lifting the Championship title with an unbelievable 101-points total accumulated come the end of the 46-game season.

Benson could well fancy returning to the second tier to play for Leeds to gain another promotion on his sparkling resume in a similar fashion to Brooks, meaning Gnonto would tumble down the Whites pecking order as a result.

Showboating for fun with the Clarets on the way to that title, the 26-year-old also showed his goalscoring expertise in curling many a wonder strike past a hapless Championship goalkeeper that campaign.

Manuel Benson for Burnley.

Yet, despite all these heroics, Benson finds himself cut adrift at Turf Moor currently and rumours suggest Leeds are in the driver's seat to land his signature this month subsequently.

Benson could well be a very effective weapon to deploy by Farke when games are tight, with Leeds still very much in the automatic promotion hunt if everything goes to plan and this signing could give them an edge.

3 Option 3: Mateusz Musialowski

Liverpool midfielderMateusz Musialowski.

Leeds could well go down the route of securing a raw and young talent as opposed to wingers who have been there and done that in the division with this potential buy, the Whites reportedly in for Liverpool starlet Mateusz Musialowski on loan this window.

Joined by Birmingham City now in pursuing the Polish attacker, Leeds will hope they have the advantage of being a positive, attack-oriented club near the top of the league on their side to land the 20-year-old talent over the Blues.

This season for the Reds at U21 level, Musialowski has bagged six goals in all competitions with the youngster even playing as a centre-forward on occasion.

Musialowski's flexibility to play in multiple positions could well be what Farke admires in the Reds youngster considering he hasn't cut his teeth playing senior football yet, giving Leeds another striker option potentially if a leggy Patrick Bamford drops off in form after bursting into life again this year.

Gnonto's minutes in the Whites first team could be even fewer and far between with this loan addition, the 20-year-old a smart buy if a deal can be reached.

Former Pakistan batsman Akhtar Sarfraz dies aged 43

He played four ODIs between December 1997 and October 1998, scoring 66 runs in four innings

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Jun-2019Akhtar Sarfraz, the former Pakistan and Peshawar batsman, has died aged 43 after a battle with colon cancer. He passed away at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial cancer hospital, which was built by Imran Khan, in Peshawar.A left-hander, Sarfraz played four ODIs between December 1997 and October 1998, scoring 66 runs in four innings. He had a more successful domestic career – 5720 runs in 118 first-class games and 2636 runs in 98 List A games – which spanned over a decade. His last competitive game was for Peshawar in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy in 2007.After ending his playing career, Sarfraz worked as a regional coach and then served as a selector for the Pakistan women’s side between 2018 and 2019.PCB chairman Ehsan Mani paid tribute to Sarfraz, saying, “The PCB is shocked to hear the sad news of Akhtar’s passing. It is very difficult to accept and comprehend if you lose someone from the cricket fraternity, particularly as young and lively as Akhtar who was admired, respected and loved by everyone.”It’s tragic that death cut short his life at such a young age, but he will live in our memories for a very long period. On behalf of the PCB, I want to extend my deepest condolences to Akhtar’s family and assure them that in these difficult times, we stand firmly with them.”

Afghanistan finish on zero as West Indies, Chris Gayle sign off with win

Teenager Ikram Alikhil and Rahmat Shah struck half-centuries, but it was not enough for Afghanistan to earn their first points

The Report by Deivarayan Muthu04-Jul-2019
As it happenedEighteen-year-old Ikram Alikhil came within three shots of becoming the first teenager to hit a World Cup century, and Rahmat Shah made a velvet-smooth half-century of his own, but it was still not enough for Afghanistan as they exited the World Cup without a single point from nine matches. Three of West Indies’ brightest young batting talents – Evin Lewis, Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran – made ebullient half-centuries as well, which formed the centerpiece of their 311 for 6.The target always seemed away from Afghanistan’s reach, but Ikram and Rahmat brought it closer with their 133-run partnership – the highest for the side this World Cup. Once both the set batsmen – and later their best batsman Najibullah Zadran – fell, it was curtains for them.WATCH on Hotstar (India only): Highlights of West Indies’ win over AfghanistanBatsmen from either side provided a glimpse of the promising future, but it also left Afghanistan and West Indies wondering what might have been had they got their act together when it mattered. The sun was out in the morning at Headingley, and West Indies’ battery of young batsmen lit it up further, despite the early departure of Chris Gayle. The big Jamaican nicked off for 7 in his last World Cup match, but a fit-again Lewis and Hope injected impetus into the innings. Hope, dropped on 5 at midwicket by Rashid Khan, played the shot of the day, when he twinkled down the track and launched Mohammad Nabi over his head for six. After seeing off Mujeeb ur Rahman’s new-ball spell on a fairly slow track, Lewis swung left-arm seamer Sayed Shirzad over square-leg and then Gulbadin Naib over midwicket for sixes. He moved to 58 before the slowness of the pitch forced him into dragging a short legbreak from Rashid to deep midwicket.Chris Gayle and Carlos Brathwaite do push-ups to celebrate Rahmat Shah’s wicket•Getty Images

Hope, though, was more decisive against spin. He stretched right forward to full balls – and often went down the track to get the ball in his arc – while going right back to the shorter ones. He took Rashid and Nabi for 45 off 45 balls before the offspin-bowling allrounder combated brawn with brain. Hope had just crunched Nabi down the ground for back-to-back fours at the start of the 38th over, but then Nabi shifted his angle to around the wicket and cramped the batsman, resulting in a catch to deep midwicket.Pooran got a life on 7 in the next over and punished the sloppy Afghans along with his captain Jason Holder in a blazing 105-run stand. All told, West Indies slammed 111 from the last ten overs of their innings.Once again, Pooran showed why West Indies’ selectors had taken a punt on him even though he was just one ODI old before the World Cup. He followed up his maiden century with 58 off 43 balls, which was a fine cocktail of power and precision.Holder’s cameo – 45 off 34 balls – was all about power. When Mujeeb Ur Rahman speared a 101kph dart on middle, he dropped to one knee and smoked it 30 rows beyond midwicket. What about Dawlat Zadran’s back-of-the-hand variation? Smoked over the same region again. Mujeeb’s yorker? Holder backed away and jabbed it to the third-man boundary.Pooran and Holder were both dismissed at the start of the last over, but Carlos Brathwaite went 6, 4, 4 to vault his side past 300.Kemar Roach jolted Afghanistan’s chase early when he had Naib flapping a catch to short midwicket. Ikram and Rahmat then propped them with up with some dazzling strokes. While Rahmat was particularly strong off the front foot, unfurling a variety of drives, Ikram pumped Roach down the ground and even emulated Shakib Al Hasan’s cut with both his feet in the air.Rahmat was the first to get to a fifty, off 57 balls, before Ikram found a higher gear and outscored him. The stand was snapped in the 27th over, simply enough, but was celebrated in grand style. Gayle’s catch at short cover was a sitter, but it was his vaudevillian celebration – half-a-dozen perfectly synchronised push-ups with Brathwaite, the bowler – that made it memorable.Gayle could have dismissed Ikram, too, with the ball on 73, but Hope botched a stumping chance. Ikram added 13 to his tally, before Gayle was at it again, pinning him in front. Asghar Afghan (40) and Shirzad (25) landed some late blows, but the game had been decided by then. The ending was sweet for West Indies with Gayle getting a rousing reception from his team-mates and the Headingley crowd.

"Happy" – Striker target gives interesting response to Celtic links

Celtic are on the hunt for a new striker, and one of their targets has left the door very much open ahead of a potential Celtic Park switch.

Celtic being pushed in Premiership title race

Though the Bhoys currently sit atop the Scottish Premiership, they could be dethroned should Rangers win their game in hand by a few goals, and there are clearly problems within Brendan Rodgers' squad. Principally, it appears that the front line needs something of a refresh.

Though they completed a loan move for Adam Idah in January, it remains to be seen whether or not Brendan Rodgers opts to make the move permanent, and with Japanese striker Kyogo Furuhashi persistently linked with a move away from Celtic Park a new striker may be needed even if the Norwich man is made permanent.

One man that they have previously been credited with an interest in is Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski, who is the Dons' top goalscorer. Originally a left-back as a youngster, the reformed frontman has been a revelation at Pittodrie. Starting all of Aberdeen's 23 Scottish Premiership this season, he has returned 13 goals and is largely responsible for keeping them out of the drop zone this campaign.

With Celtic thought to have been interested in the North Macedonian before they moved for Idah, it is thought that they would be keen to return for him in the summer, though Aberdeen will still demand that they make him the most expensive transfer between two Scottish sides (a figure that currently stands at £4.4m from when Scott Brown swapped Hibernian for Celtic Park).

Miovski flattered but determined to remain focused

Quizzed on the links, Miovski left the door open to remain in Scotland and move to Celtic, though he was quick to stress that his focus remained on his career with Aberdeen.

"I'm playing the best season of my career at Aberdeen and I'm enjoying football", he said, via Rangers Review.

"I like Scotland. It has a great passion for football. People love the club, they are with us everywhere. I like Scottish football because it is played very quickly and all the time the balls are put forward towards us strikers. The game is played with a lot of contact, but it's direct and I love seeing this much action in the penalty box.

Soccer Football – Scottish League Cup – Semi Final – Rangers v Aberdeen – Hampden Park, Glasgow, Scotland, Britain – January 15, 2023 Aberdeen’s Bojan Miovski celebrates scoring their first goal Action Images via Reuters/Jason Cairnduff

"I am happy to be linked with clubs like Celtic, Rangers and Southampton because that means I'm making progress. I still have two years left on my contract in Aberdeen, I am focused on the club and on winning a place in Europe like last year. What the future will bring?… I don't know.

"Now I am focused only on my club and that is my goal, to be as good as possible. Aberdeen are in the top three clubs in Scotland. Celtic and Rangers are one thing, Aberdeen is another – our club signs young players for less money and gives everyone a chance."

With a third of the season left to play, there is plenty of time for Miovski to attract even bigger suitors and potentially spark a bidding war for his services come the summer transfer window, with goalscorers worth their weight in gold to any side.

Chelsea eyeing "outstanding" new wonderkid if they can’t get Osimhen

Chelsea are on the hunt for a striker, and have lined up Victor Osimhen as their no.1 target this summer. Should they fail, however, they have another target in mind.

Blues still struggling under Pochettino

Despite more excessive spending over the summer, Chelsea are yet to truly click under Mauricio Pochettino. Marooned in midtable in the Premier League, they have begun to bridge the gap to the European football chasers and also reached the Carabao Cup final, where they will face Liverpool in February in a bid for their first silverware of Todd Boehly's regime.

But there are still plenty of issues, with a clinical striker seemingly top of the next Chelsea transfer wishlist. Only Cole Palmer has managed to hit double figures this season so far, while Nicolas Jackson has found the net nine times but has also been guilty of missing several times that many chances in front of goal.

As a result, there is a widespread expectation that they will add a new no.9 before the new season, casting doubt on the futures of Armando Broja and David Datro Fofana, both of whom are out on loan.

Osimhen the priority, but who is the alternative?

High among their potential targets is Nigeria and Napoli frontman Victor Osimhen, and the striker would not be against a move to Stamford Bridge if reports are to be believed, while a £113m release clause could make a deal easier.

However, Paris Saint Germain are also thought to be chasing the striker, a hunt that will only intensify following the recent news that Kylian Mbappe will be leaving the club in the summer. Reports suggest that PSG have made Osimhen their no.1 target to replace the World Cup winner, which could re-ignite the transfer war that has been taking place between PSG and the Blues since Boehly's arrival.

As a result, Chelsea are eyeing up alternatives and as per Nizaar Kinsella, they may turn back to Brighton to explore a move for Evan Ferguson.

The Brighton striker shot to prominence last season and is considered one of the hottest young talents available despite having had a difficult season for Roberto De Zerbi's side. Dubbed "outstanding" by Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards, he is valued in excess of £100m and penned a new contract at the AMEX stadium earlier in the season, with Brighton keen to fight off interest from Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool.

Of course, Chelsea and Brighton have history. The Blues have made a habit of targeting both players (Marc Cucurella, Moises Caicedo and Robert Sanchez) and staff (Graham Potter and Kyle Macaulay) in deals that have so far worked out better for the south coast side than the west Londoners.

Also among their targets is Ivan Toney, but they will likely face Arsenal competition for the Brentford striker should they solidify their transfer interest. Like so many teams in the top flight this summer though, the Blues are putting a goalscorer top of their transfer list.
