One player is almost certain to leave Leeds United this summer, after it emerged that the club now plan to possibly accept a cut-price fee to get rid of him.

After a dull 0-0 draw against Norwich City in the East Anglian sunshine on Sunday, Leeds and Daniel Farke find themselves two wins away from a return to the Premier League.

Welcoming Norwich to Elland Road on Thursday evening for the second leg of the Championship play-off semi-final, a win will see them confirm a spot at Wembley against one of Southampton and West Brom, who also drew 0-0 in their first leg and will contest the spot at St Mary's on Friday evening.

Should Leeds see themselves out of the second tier via the play-offs, it would be the first time they have managed to achieve the feat in their history, having fallen against Derby County in the semi-finals back in 2019 and not having been successful in any of the four attempts across the Championship and League One before that.

But there seems certain to be change this summer no matter which division they are in come the new season, with impressive duo Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville both attracting Premier League attention, while Joe Rodon's loan is due to expire and he will return to Tottenham, where he may have more suitors than just the Yorkshire side.

Of course, Leeds would like to keep all of their stars this summer, but some other players are far more dispensable for owners the 49ers Enterprises.

Leeds loanee set to be sold

Now, it has emerged that Brenden Aaronson will be free to leave Leeds this summer in a potential permanent exit. The USMNT star, currently on loan at Union Berlin, arrived to much fanfare back in 2022, but struggled in the Premier League and promptly headed out on loan when Leeds were relegated from the top flight.

Now, Football Insider claim that the 23-year-old, on £45,000-a-week, "has no future at Elland Road and is not expected to play for the club again once his time in Germany comes to an end", with Leeds possibly open to selling him for a massive loss.

Bought for £25m, the Yorkshire side could let him leave for just £12m, less than 50% of what they paid RB Salzburg for his services. Previous reports have claimed that Farke is not keen on keeping Aaronson when he returns this summer no matter which division they find themselves in.

Reports have also suggested that Union cannot afford to meet that asking price to make his move permanent this summer, with any deal on Leeds' terms set to become a new record signing for the German outfit (overtaking the £11m they paid last summer for Robin Gosens). It seems Aaronson has kicked his last ball in Leeds white, though.

وقال خوان لابورتا، في كلمته التي نشرتها صحيفة “موندو ديبورتيفو” الإسبانية: “شكرًا لك الرئيس جامبر، نيابة عن جميع مشجعي برشلونة، شكرًا لك على الترويج لأفضل نادٍ في العالم منذ 125 عامًا في مثل هذا اليوم، أوافق على ذلك، برشلونة يجعل الأحلام تصبح حقيقة، الآن أصبح الحلم حلمًا جديدًا، ملعب يتسع لأكثر من 100 ألف متفرج، سيكون أفضل ملعب في القارات الخمس”.

Les Ferdinand’s stats at Newcastle United

After joining the Magpies for a fee in the region of £6m during the summer of 1995, striker Les Ferdinand was brought into the club to provide an added attacking threat in the final third.

Following a season where he scored 24 times for QPR in the Premier League, the striker had high hopes of adding firepower to Kevin Keegan’s impressive side.

It’s safe to say he lived up to those expectations, scoring 25 times during his first campaign on Tyneside, as the Magpies came within touching distance of winning the Premier League title, despite having a 12-point cushion over Manchester United at one stage.

The 1996/97 season saw Ferdinand form an excellent partnership with iconic striker Alan Shearer, scoring another 16 times in the league, but once again it wasn’t enough to lead the club to the title, as they finished runners-up for the second consecutive year.

Ferdinand, who was dubbed as ‘Sir Les’ by the Newcastle supporters, would depart St James’ Park after just two seasons – despite scoring 41 times in the league during his two campaigns as a Magpie.

New boss Kenny Dalglish sold the Englishman to Tottenham for the same fee they paid for him despite his excellent goalscoring record in the North East, dubbing the decision to leave the club as the “worst” he’s made from a footballing perspective.

Chris Silverwood backs Jos Buttler to come good as England regroup at Emirates Old Trafford

Andrew Miller13-Jul-2020Joe Denly looks set to pay the price for England’s four-wicket defeat in the first Test against West Indies, but Jos Buttler can expect to be given “the best chance to succeed” despite his own flat-lining Test form, as the head coach Chris Silverwood prepares to lift his squad ahead of Thursday’s second match at Emirates Old Trafford.With England’s captain Joe Root set to slot back into the side at No. 4 following the birth of his second child, the obvious fall-guy is Denly, 34, who once again failed to capitalise on a pair of solid starts with scores of 18 and 29 at the Ageas Bowl.After 15 Tests in a row dating back to England’s tour of the Caribbean in early 2019, those latest innings epitomise a flatlining career in which Denly’s average has now slipped back below 30. Moreover they contrast increasingly starkly with the efforts of Denly’s Kent team-mate Zak Crawley – 12 years his junior – whose second-innings 76 at the Ageas Bowl completed the fifth consecutive match in which he has posted a Test-best score.”That’s what we are looking for,” Silverwood said. “If we can create an environment where these guys can learn and continually improve then we will end up with some very good cricketers on our hands.”Zak is improving constantly. He certainly showed maturity and the innings he played was very good. We have some young players in that side that seem to have good heads on their shoulders, and he’s one of them. But you’re right, we have got a very, very good gloveman in Ben Foakes out there, which we’re lucky to have.”[Jos] looked brilliant coming into this game, in practice and everything. Most recently in South Africa they bounced back from a heavy defeat in the first Test at Centurion to win the series 3-1, and Silverwood was hopeful that the same spirit would come to the fore now.”It is something that’s been spoken about, and it’s something that we keep managing to do,” he said. “We have to address and it look at how we get out of the blocks a little bit quicker.”We had a good chat in the dressing room afterwards – as you always do, you sit down and you look at areas where you missed opportunities here, you’ve built well there.”I tend to try and find the positives in everything. And South Africa was used as an example of how well we can bounce back. But what I don’t know want to do is take any credit away from the West Indies because I thought they played very, very well.”Another key issue for England will be the management of their bowling resources, with Stuart Broad champing at the bit to get involved after being controversially omitted from the opening Test, a decision that ended his run of 51 consecutive home appearances.Broad voiced his displeasure at that decision in a mid-Test interview, but Silverwood echoed Ben Stokes’ post-match sentiments and welcomed his determination to continue fighting for his place.”I think Stuart handled himself very well during that interview, to be honest,” Silverwood said. “What I did love about it, and subsequently the conversations I’ve had with him, is that passion. That drive is still there and to see that in someone who’s done as much in the game as he has, I find very exciting to be honest. And Stuart still has a big role to play within this team. I’ve made that very clear to him.”With six Tests to be played in the space of seven weeks, attrition among England’s fast-bowling ranks is inevitable, but Silverwood was optimistic of a clean bill of health in the build-up to Old Trafford.”We have one or two stiff bodies this morning as you can imagine,” he said. “I’ve been to see the guys already. But they all seem to have come through well. We will know more after training tomorrow. We will put them through their paces and see where we are at. Nothing is a given in this team as we’ve seen and people will be playing for their spots. Everything will be considered.”

It was a whirlwind first season for Pochettino, who endured the wrath of supporters for a long period following a turbulent first half of 2023/2024. However, towards the latter stages, things took a much more positive turn.

Barring their 5-0 defeat at Arsenal, Chelsea hit an excellent run of form midway through February – winning 12 out of their final 20 games in all competitions and losing just three of them. They also tasted victory in five out of their final five Premier League games, a run which saw them qualify for the Europa Conference League and end the campaign on a real high.

They were only five points off a place in the top four, which few would've predicted for them when they were languishing far behind in midtable over the winter period. However, Chelsea chiefs have now seen fit to part company with Pochettino, and the search begins for a new manager.

Chelsea are believed to have held loose talks with Thomas Tuchel as one option (Florian Plettenberg), while the likes of Thomas Frank and Vincent Kompany are thought to be admired at Stamford Bridge as well (BBC).

Whoever comes in to replace Pochettino will have to contend with potentially losing a few big name players as well, with Conor Gallagher thought to be up for sale at Chelsea despite his starring role over 23/24.

The Englishman is entering the final 12 months of his contract and there has been little progress in the way of an extension. As well as the usual suspects like Gallagher, there is now also a belief that £200,000-per-week defender Ben Chilwell isn't safe from the axe either.

Journalist thinks Chilwell could leave Chelsea

Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Dean Jones says people he's spoken to think Chilwell could be sold by Chelsea and faces an uncertain future, coming after his omission from Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2024.

“It’s a big blow for him not to be in the England squad and he will be looked at as a big casualty for not even making the provisional side, especially as Luke Shaw made it," said Jones.

"This will now lead into a longer conversation about his club future because his spot at Chelsea is not 100 per cent safe.

“Personally I think he will stay, I think we will see him bounce back from a frustrating season and the injuries that have held him back. But there are people I speak to who are a little more doubtful about that.”

Decision to omit senior seamer was understandable but hasn’t yet been justified

George Dobell at the Ageas Bowl09-Jul-2020It’s a funny thing, given that he spent a fair bit of the afternoon sitting on his hotel room balcony as one of this Test’s very few spectators, but Stuart Broad may well have had the best day of any of England’s bowlers.For while James Anderson, Jofra Archer and Mark Wood were, on the whole, frustrated by some determined West Indies batting, Broad’s reputation improved in his absence.Was it a mistake to leave out Broad? It might have been. In recent times – since the start of 2019 really, when he shortened his run and resolved to make batsmen play at more deliveries – he has tended to bowl an excellent probing line and length. On this surface, offering some uneven bounce and a bit of seam movement, that would have been a useful weapon. He averaged 23.06 in six Tests in England last summer and 19.42 in England’s last series, in South Africa, too. Not many bowlers are left out with records like that.But the one man who averaged even fewer in that South Africa series was Mark Wood. So even though Wood admitted to be “a little bit surprised” he was selected – “I thought the main four would play,” he said – it wasn’t really a surprising pick. Many times in recent years – not least in Australia – England have paid the price for a lack of pace, so the attraction of going into this match with Wood and Archer in tandem in Test cricket for the first time was understandable.Wood has more to his game than pace, too. His statistics since he lengthened his run-up are outstanding – he has taken 19 wickets at an average of 14.66 – and while that is a small sample size, the way he has bowled in recent times – such as England’s most recent Test, in Johannesburg, when he took nine wickets in the match, or in the most recent Test against West Indies, when he claimed a maiden five-for – rendered him a hugely attractive option. Especially for a new captain in Ben Stokes who has known him for many years and has long sung his praises as a player.Stuart Broad wearing his new-look bandana•Getty Images

Equally, we have to be careful not to exaggerate Broad’s potency. Since mid-August 2015 – just after the demolition job at Trent Bridge – Broad has played 28 home Tests and taken only one five-for. His average in that period – 27.66 – is still impressive, but he is not the destroyer he once was. Archer, by contrast, took two five-fors in his first series last summer and another in South Africa over the winter.But might England have been guilty of picking the attack they would like to see in Brisbane rather than focusing on the here and now? Well, possibly. Certainly Jason Holder showed the virtues of control and movement. So while he bowled significantly slower – almost 20% slower than Wood at times – he had the game to exploit the conditions. Wood, who reached a top speed of 94.5 mph, and Archer were guilty of bowling just a little short and just a little straight. Both might have presented an intimidating prospect in Brisbane or Perth but on this slow seamer? Neither generated as much lateral movement as Holder. So far he has given them a masterclass in exploiting English conditions.There are a lot of caveats to all this. West Indies have only faced 19.3 overs so far. At the same stage of their own innings, England had lost just the one wicket, too. Archer or Wood could yet bowl England to victory.And, much of what is being said about Broad could be said about Chris Woakes. Indeed, Woakes, with a bit of extra pace and an ability to generate a little more movement in the air, might have an even stronger case for inclusion. He averages 23.45 with the ball in his 19 Tests in England and would have strengthened the batting, too.That’s a relevant issue. For just as England’s selection was criticised when Broad was left out in Barbados 18 months ago, it should be remembered that they were bowled out for 77 when they batted. When that happens, it hardly matters what your bowlers do.ALSO READ: Jason Holder the best first-change seamer since 2018While England’s first-innings score of 204 here is not so short of par – Wood reckoned between 250 and 300 was par, but 300 looks a vast total on this pitch – it was still the case that several of their batsmen paid the price for technical errors: Zak Crawley and Rory Burns played across the line, Ollie Pope nibbled at one he should have left and Joe Denly defends with a gate between bat and pad so wide it could be mistaken for Brandenburg. Broad’s inclusion wouldn’t have altered any of that.There is, as ever, a wider context, too. England do have to look to the future. They cannot rely on Anderson and Broad, now aged 37 and 34 respectively, forever and know they have to start to make preparations for life after them. Maybe Wood and Archer will be able to find life in surfaces in India (or the UAE, if that series has to be moved, as some expect) and Australia that Broad and Anderson rarely could. It may also be that the selection was not wrong, as such, but that the performances have not yet been as required. And let’s not forget West Indies’ batting, either. Kraigg Brathwaite looked more solid than anyone in the England’s top-order.Perhaps the summer schedule is also relevant. England are set to play six Tests in seven or eight weeks and will need to rotate their attack. Broad could well come back into the side for the Test next week – perhaps instead of Anderson, who has been injured in two of his three more recent Tests – and thereby ensuring England have an experienced attack leader. But conditions there might not favour Broad as much as they do here.So were England wrong to leave out Broad? We’ll never know for sure. There was reasonable logic behind it, certainly. But as ball after ball was taken at head height down the leg side by Jos Buttler, it was hard not to look over at that hotel balcony and wonder if the man sitting on it might not have been better employed on the pitch.
