Dream for Omorodion: Chelsea should land £50m sensation who Neto adores

The news of Pedro Neto’s transfer to Chelsea on Friday afternoon came completely out of the blue, with Enzo Maresca finally landing a talent who could improve his forward line.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that an agreement between the Blues and Wolverhampton Wanderers had been reached over a £54m deal including add-ons that would see the 24-year-old swap the West Midlands for West London.

The Portuguese international has struggled with fitness issues in recent times, only managing 20 Premier League appearances during 2023/24, but did manage to register 11 goal contributions – with his attacking qualities undoubtedly improving the Blues’ frontline.

Pedro Neto celebrates for Wolves

The spending under Todd Boehly doesn’t show any signs of slowing down, with Neto’s deal taking the fees paid for players to a staggering £150m – with the Wolves man being the most expensive of the lot this summer.

He could be joined at Stamford Bridge by one of his former teammates, with Chelsea still in the race for his signature despite the latest flurry of activity in the market.

Chelsea should sign £50m attacking ace

All summer long, Maresca has been eyeing up various attacking players to try and give his side the added edge in the final third, to help try and push the club back towards the top end of England’s top flight.

He could be helped in his attempts by the potential addition of Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, with the Blues having been named earlier this month as one of the clubs who are pursuing a move.

Morgan Gibbs-White celebrates for Nottingham Forest

However, they aren’t alone, with Arsenal, Newcastle and Aston Villa all keeping tabs on the 24-year-old’s situation at the City Ground.

Nuno Espírito Santo’s side are reluctant to part ways with their star man after he registered 15 goal contributions in the Premier League last season, but it has previously been reported that they could be willing to negotiate should they receive an offer in the region of £50m.

The Englishman would be a great addition for the Blues, potentially rekindling a partnership with ex-Wolves teammate Neto, whilst also being a dream addition for another potential Chelsea signing.

Why Gibbs-White would be a dream addition for Omorodion

Over the past couple of days, Chelsea have edged ever closer to the signing of striker Sami Omorodion from Atlético Madrid, with the two clubs agreeing a £35m for the 20-year-old.

The Spaniard spent last campaign on loan at fellow LaLiga side Deportivo Alaves, scoring eight goals in his 34 appearances – an average of one goal every 4.3 matches he appeared in.

Samu Omorodion for Alaves

He could be further aided by Gibbs-White should the pair both move to Stamford Bridge before the start of the campaign next weekend, with his creativity in the final third falling into the hands of the youngster.

The Forest ace, who Neto found “easy to play with” during their time together at Molineux, registered 4.9 progressive passes per 90 in the Premier League last season, with 3.6 of them being played into the final third of the pitch – showcasing his ability to play the ball into forward areas and thus hand more opportunities to Omorodion.

He also managed an average of 1.3 successful take-ins and 2.3 progressive carries, with Gibbs-White loving to take the ball forward on a frequent basis – especially on transition.

Whilst it may cost Maresca and Boehly another huge sum after the signing of the aforementioned players, it would be a huge coup that would certainly provide added creativity in attacking areas.

As new man Neto has previously said of Gibbs-White's talents, "he likes to combine, he likes to come inside, he likes to play with the team" – all attributes that Maresca would surely love.

Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White

The former Wolves ace is destined for the very top of European football, with the £50m fee touted a potential steal for a player of his quality.

Maxwell wants to be a 'positive influence' on RCB, and performances 'can take care of themselves'

Says he isn’t stressed about the burden of expectations thrust upon him by his big price tag

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Apr-20217:08

Daneil Vettori discusses the possible impact of AB de Villiers and Glenn Maxwell

Glenn Maxwell wants to be a “positive influence” on the Royal Challengers Bangalore, his new IPL team, and isn’t stressed about the burden of expectations that comes with his price tag of INR 14.25 crore (approx AUD 2,500,000).”I probably don’t set targets. I think for myself, I just want to have a positive influence on the group, whether it be my performance, or attitude or the way I even help with the fielding practice – if I see improvement in the whole squad, the whole team as a collective, over the tournament,” Maxwell said in an interview on the Royal Challengers’ YouTube channel. “Obviously, we want to win the tournament, but I want to make sure that everything I do during this time has a positive influence on the group.”So, I’m not overly concerned. I think my performances will take care of themselves. I want to have a positive influence on everything I do, as far as attitude, helping out around the team, leadership-wise helping out Virat [Kohli] when he needs it, and off the field, at training, and making sure the young guys are still developing as well.”Related

Gambhir: Maxwell has played for so many IPL teams 'because he's not been consistent at all'

The Royals Challengers, who are yet to win an IPL title, are Maxwell’s fourth franchise in eight editions, after he was released by the Kings XI Punjab (now the Punjab Kings) following a poor 2020 tournament where he scored just 108 runs in 11 innings and did not hit a six. With 82 IPL matches under his belt, Maxwell is expected to marshal the second half of the Royal Challengers’ innings and deliver the goods with his part-time offspin. He hoped he was able to help with team building, too, especially with potential debutants like New Zealand allrounder Kyle Jamieson.”There’s so much more to the game,” Maxwell said. “And with my experience – I think it’s my 22nd trip to India – you’ve got to be able to sort of help out the rest of the group. A guy like Kyle Jamieson – this is his first trip to India – so we’re on different ends of the spectrum a little bit there. So for me to sort of pass on my previous experiences, and help him sort of fit in here trying different foods, making sure that I’m taking care of him that way as well. And it’s up to the experienced guys in the squad to help.”Maxwell’s thoughts came a day after Gautam Gambhir, who briefly captained him at the Delhi Daredevils [now the Delhi Capitals] in 2018, told ESPNcricinfo that the Australian’s inconsistency was the reason he has played for so many franchises.Daniel Vettori, the former New Zealand captain who played for – and coached – the Royal Challengers, however, felt that the attention Kohli and de Villiers tend to draw would allow Maxwell to maintain a low profile in the side, which may work to Maxwell’s advantage.”The emphasis normally is on AB and Kohli, and Maxwell in a way can fly under the radar,” Vettori told ESPNcricinfo. “Hopefully that lack of pressure will allow him to have an IPL that everyone expects him to most years.”

Reporter: Rangers have been in contact for 6ft 3 international defender

Rangers are thought to have made an approach to sign a towering 6ft 3in defender this summer, according to a transfer update from reliable reporter Mark Hendry.

Rangers transfer news

The Gers produced a scintillating performance on Saturday afternoon, romping to a 6-0 win at home to Ross County in the Scottish Premiership. Philippe Clement's side have made a relatively slow start to the season, including drawing 0-0 at Hearts on the opening weekend, but they look to have found another gear.

This has been a summer full of new signings, including Jefte, Connor Barron and Mohamed Diomande, but that's not to say that at least one more new face won't arrive between now and the end of the summer transfer window next week, giving Rangers the best possible chance of pipping Celtic to title glory.

Young Norwich City striker Abu Kamara has been linked with a move to Ibrox before deadline day closes, with personal terms involving the 21-year-old not expected to be an issue at all.

In terms of outgoings, centre-back Ben Davies is thought to be closing in on a loan move away from Rangers, heading to Birmingham City, and it means the search could be on for a replacement. A new transfer claim certainly suggests that that is the case.

Rangers made contact over signing defender

According to Football Scotland's Hendry, Rangers made contact with Troyes over the signing of centre-back Jackson Porozo, who spent last season on loan at Turkish side Kasimpasa.

The situation isn't an ongoing one, however, with the demands "not suitable" for the Gers, meaning they are now "set to pursue other players" instead of the 6ft 3in defender, with Porozo joining Leganes instead.

It is essential that Rangers bring in another centre-back with Davies moving on, even if the Englishman wasn't necessarily a vital player for Clement. Squad depth is so important in terms of the Gers' Scottish Premiership title tilt, with injuries and fatigue always likely to be an issue, so it would be risky not to replace the outgoing former Liverpool centre-back.

Porozo could have been a strong option for Rangers, considering he has won eight caps for Ecuador, as well as making 22 appearances in Ligue 1, showing that he can perform in one of Europe's big five leagues.

That chance has been and gone, however, which is a shame, especially as the Ecuadorian is still only 24 years of age, therefore representing a long-term capture rather than a panic buy to come and make up for the loss of Davies this summer.

Now, it is a case of Rangers looking at alternative options in the next few days, with Almeria ace Kaiky mentioned as a possible target in the same report by Hendry. Still only 20, the Brazilian made eight appearances in La Liga last season, and one offer has already been rejected, suggesting he could be a primary target for the Gers.

Man Utd still eyeing move to sign "fantastic" star despite summer failure

After a successful summer of incomings, Manchester United still reportedly have one particular attacking star on their radar ahead of the winter transfer window in January.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils arguably had the perfect summer off the field. Erik ten Hag's side entered the window in need of additions all across the pitch, and months later, they can say they got exactly that. United first improved their backline and attacking options with Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee, before adding a standout signing in the form of Matthijs de Ligt.

Bayern Munich defender Matthijs De Ligt

Then, ending with a bang, those at Old Trafford ended a summer-long saga by finally welcoming Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal reportedly worth £50.5m with add-ons.

Speaking to the club's official website, Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth welcomed the midfielder, saying: "Signing Manuel was another of our primary targets for this summer.

"He is among the very best ball-winning midfield players in the world and has an excellent record at both club and international level. His qualities, experience and passion will be a great complement to our strong group of midfielders.

"Manuel is a player we’ve watched closely, and we are excited to see the positive impact he will make on the pitch and in the dressing room as we continue to strive for success."

Ugarte's arrival could be a sign of things to come in the future, too. According to The Athletic, Manchester United still have Benjamin Sesko on their radar despite failing to complete a move for the RB Leipzig forward earlier in the window.

INEOS have already struck gold on Man Utd gem who's worth more than Ugarte

Erik ten Hag has undergone a moderately successful transfer window

ByRoss Kilvington Aug 31, 2024

The Leipzig star was the subject of quite the saga at the start of the window, reportedly rejecting a move to Arsenal and watching on as United also failed with their own approach. One to keep an eye on when the January window swings open, Sesko could arrive to complete Manchester United's attack.

"Fantastic" Sesko would partner Hoijlund

Given that Zirkzee is more of a modern-day forward who is in between a No 9 and an attacking midfielder, Manchester United would be wise to welcome Sesko, as he could form a deadly partnership with Rasmus Hojlund. With two out-and-out goalscorers, United would be solving Ten Hag's attacking problem once and for all.

The 21-year-old has found himself at the centre of praise this year, including from Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, who described Sesko's form as "fantastic" in April.

Those at Old Trafford will certainly be confident in INEOS's ability to get business done following an excellent summer of additions to hand Ten Hag a squad capable of returning to the Champions League this season.

MCC told to 'move with the times' as row erupts over Rachael Heyhoe-Flint memorial

Proposal for statue or gate in memory of female pioneer met with resistance from members

Marylebone Cricket Club has responded to criticism from leading female cricketers, including Heather Knight, the current England captain, after a report in The Times claimed that a proposal to erect a permanent memorial to one of the sport’s most pioneering figures, Rachael Heyhoe-Flint, had been met with resistance from sections of the club’s 18,500 male-dominated membership.Baroness Heyhoe-Flint, who died in 2017 at the age of 77, played 22 Tests for England between 1960 and 1979, at a time when the women’s game received scant attention or funding. She went on to become a leading administrator for the women’s game, and in 2014 was integral in securing England’s women their first tranche of ECB central contracts. In 2020, the ECB women’s regional competition was named in her honour. However, her most significant contribution to the sport came in 1973, when she devised and established the first Cricket World Cup – a women’s event that preceded the first men’s tournament by two years. She went on to lift the trophy herself after England beat Australia in the final, which was held at Edgbaston because women at that stage were still not permitted to play at Lord’s.Heyhoe-Flint did eventually take part in the first women’s ODI at Lord’s, against Australia in 1976, and is commemorated by MCC with a portrait in the pavilion – a section of the ground from which she was barred until, in 1999, she became one of the first ten female members to be accepted into the club.

However, with Clare Connor, the ECB’s head of women’s cricket, set to become MCC’s first female president when she takes over the role later this year, the notion of a more fitting memorial to Heyhoe-Flint, in the form of a statue or gate, has been dismissed as “gesture politics” by sections of the club membership.”I think it would be misguided to erect a statue,” member and cricket author Mark Peel was quoted as saying in The Times. “It would put everything out of proportion. To compare like with like – men’s and women’s cricket – is plain wrong.”Connor, responding to the row via Twitter, added that discussions with MCC were “very well advanced”, and that she had been unaware of any objections from within the club until reading the Times article.MCC subsequently issued a statement confirming that plans for a memorial were in progress, and praising the contribution that Heyhoe-Flint had made, both to the wider sport and to the club itself, including her election to the Main Committee in 2004, and as a trustee.”Rachael Heyhoe-Flint’s contribution to the women’s game and to MCC is unparalleled,” Guy Lavender, MCC’s chief executive and secretary, said. “Her portrait, commissioned by the club in 2010, is displayed above the entrance to the Long Room in the Pavilion at Lord’s. Its position signifies and acknowledges the huge impact she had on cricket and the admiration in which she is held.”The club has been considering further ways to commemorate Rachael’s considerable achievements and when we emerge from the worst of the pandemic, we will be looking at how we honour Rachael’s legacy as part of our wider strategy to advance women’s and girls’ cricket.”I have had no sense of opposition to this intent, indeed the notion that there is a revolt at Lord’s is highly misleading with no such challenge raised across our club committees, or by the broader membership who recognise Rachael’s contribution to the game of cricket as a whole.”Related

There are currently three statues with a permanent presence at Lord’s – “Batsman” and “Bowler” at the Nursery End of the ground, and a bronze likeness of WG Grace, which MCC purchased from Gloucestershire after it was loaned to the ground for the 1999 World Cup. Grace, whose feats are widely credited with popularising the sport, is also commemorated with the main gates on the south side of the ground.Among the dissenters quoted in the Times article was Robert Griffiths QC, a former chairman of Lord’s development committee. “Diversity is one thing but a statue or gate has to be named on merit,” he said. “As a player you wouldn’t put her in the same league as Don Bradman and Garry Sobers, even within the women’s game. I wouldn’t want it to be thought that Rachael didn’t make a huge contribution but WG Grace opened up the world of cricket to the heights it reached.”However Knight, who dedicated England women’s World Cup win to Heyhoe-Flint when she lifted the trophy at Lord’s in 2017, was unimpressed with such arguments.”Come on MCC move with the times,” she wrote on Twitter. “Women’s cricket in England owes everything to Rachael and she invented the World Cup, without even mentioning her playing career #GetRachaelAStatue.”

Talks open: Leeds "leader" could leave Elland Road on loan before Saturday

Leeds United are back in Championship action this weekend as they welcome promotion rivals Burnley to Elland Road, but the Yorkshire side could be about to see a player leave the club before then.

The Whites have made a strong start to the new campaign, as they are unbeaten in their opening four league games, but the upcoming test against the Clarets will test that resolve.

£35k-p/w Leeds man picks up further injury on top of already damaged muscle

The news will come as a blow to any hopes Farke had of using him.

ByBen Browning Sep 11, 2024 Leeds United injury news

Ahead of the game against the Lancashire side, there was some good news that emerged from the Leeds dressing room. It was reported that Daniel Farke could be about to welcome both Daniel James and Patrick Bamford to the matchday squad.

James has featured in three of Leeds’s four league games, scoring in the win over Sheffield Wednesday, but the Welshman missed the game against Hull City through injury, and that forced him to miss international duty with Wales.

It was a minor knock the winger picked up, and now Farke is believed to be optimistic that he will have him back available for the game against Burnley. As well as James being back, Bamford could also be in contention after the striker missed the last two games before the break.

The experienced centre-forward has been out with a hamstring injury but could now be set for a return to the matchday squad as he looks to improve in what has been a frustrating start to the campaign for him. Bamford has yet to start in the league, as his appearances have been 11-minute cameos in both outings.

But while there may be good news in terms of players returning from injuries, Leeds may be about to see a player leave before the Burnley clash.

Leeds player could now leave Elland Road before Burnley clash

According to Turkish media Takvim, relayed by Sport Witness, Leeds United defender Maximilian Wober is wanted by Galatasaray. The Turkish transfer window is still open until Friday, and this report claims Galatasaray are eyeing a last-minute deal.

The Turkish giants want to sign a central defender before the transfer window closes, and it is stated that Wober is a firm target for Galatasaray. They are looking to revert to a back five, and therefore, they want to bring in a left-footed defender, and Wober is said to fit the bill. This would be a deal between two very hostile clubs, as Leeds and Galatasaray have bitterness towards each other following Chris Loftus and Kevin Speight's deaths in attacks before a UEFA Cup semi-final in Istanbul in April 2000.

This report goes on to add that Galatasaray are in talks to sign Wober on a loan deal, possibly having the option to buy, but time isn’t on their side as their window shuts on Friday. Wober, who was described as being a “leader” by former Leeds boss Jesse Marsch, was nursing a calf injury, and during this international break, Austria manager Ralf Rangnick confirmed that the defender missed the last game through a knee injury, so this could be a potential stumbling block in any transfer.
