Bangladesh unhappy as Australia's Covid-19 demands force Mushfiqur Rahim to miss home T20Is

According to the terms agreed to between the two boards, the senior batter can’t enter the Dhaka bio-bubble now

Bangladesh are unhappy with Mushfiqur Rahim’s enforced absence from the Bangladesh squad for the upcoming T20Is at home against Australia, a direct result of the Covid-19 protocols demanded by Cricket Australia. The word “unfair” is floating around in some private conversations among players and BCB officials, and the general feeling is that CA has asked for too much, and the BCB has gone a bit too far in accepting the demands. The two boards had agreed to include their respective bio-bubbles in Zimbabwe and the West Indies as part of the mandatory pre-series ten-day quarantine in Dhaka. But Rahim had to leave Harare for home after both his parents contracted Covid-19. As a result, he can’t be in the Dhaka bio-bubble now. What has upset the Bangladesh team even more is that while Rahim has not been allowed to re-enter the bubble, the players who have returned from Zimbabwe have had to do so after going through four airports – Harare, Johannesburg, Doha and Dhaka – with potentially greater exposure to the virus, but there have been no objections there.”It is unfair what happened with Mushfiq,” a member of Bangladesh’s tour party to Zimbabwe, told ESPNcricinfo. “We came in a commercial flight passing through three airports so I don’t know if it makes much sense to keep Mushfiq out of the series. He went back home from the middle of a tour for a family problem. So to not allow him to enter the quarantine after just two or three days, is not right.”Related

Mushfiqur Rahim out of Australia T20Is after missing quarantine deadline

Rahim had himself planned to be available for the Australia T20Is. He had initially taken leave from the Zimbabwe T20Is with an eye on being available for the Australia series. The leave was granted, but once the BCB-CA agreement on the bio-secure bubbles came in, he was asked to stay with the squad in Zimbabwe, even for the T20Is. His parents’ ill-health forced a change in plans. And when the home series quarantine was brought forward from July 22 to July 20, Rahim had to miss out.The BCB says it did ask CA to reconsider the stance on Rahim, but to no avail.”The agreement between CA and BCB says that there is no chance for allowing anyone from outside into the bio-bubble,” a BCB official said. “We have to hold the series with only those inside the bio-bubble. There will be challenges but this is the new normal. I think the selectors have picked the players who are best available during this scenario. There are no alternatives but to take our best available options.”Liton Das and Tamim Iqbal will also miss the Australia T20Is•BCB

To add to Bangladesh’s troubles, Tamim Iqbal is out because of a knee injury, and earlier this week, Liton Das, too, was ruled out following a family emergency. Currently, Bangladesh’s first-choice 20-member squad has been reduced to 17 players, and there are injury worries there too, including with Shakib Al Hasan. The quarantine rules could also have an impact on the use of DRS during the series. DRS technicians sit in the same room generally with match officials but the latter have been in a ten-day quarantine period and anyone coming in from the outside – such as a DRS technician – will not be able to sit in the same room according to protocols.”We have fulfilled the requirements for the production team. We are ready,” a BCB official said. “If the technician can work from a remote location, we will have DRS. There still remain some challenges but the technical person still has time (to be involved in the series).”He has to comply with a three-day quarantine (according to local health directorate), but CA has a condition that whoever isn’t part of the ten-day quarantine, they can’t get into close contact with anyone who was in the quarantine. If this person can manage to do the work remotely, then we can have DRS in the playing conditions.”The issues highlight the challenges the BCB faced for this series, in setting up two separate quarantines for match officials, hotel staff, and logistics, liaison and ground staff; the BCB has also made sure that the Australians can go to the team hotel from the airport tarmac directly. Their immigration will be processed separately, and their passports returned only after being sanitised for three days. The hotel will also be off-limits to anyone but the touring party till August 10.The BCB had earlier agreed to hold all the five matches at the Shere Bangla National Stadium instead of at two venues.”It is not just about CA giving us conditions and us accepting those conditions,” a board official said. “The Australia team is traveling here on a chartered flight from West Indies. It shows how serious they are about the health and welfare of players. We are only fulfilling some of their additional requirements.”Despite all that, concern will remain. Bangladesh is currently experiencing a fresh Covid-19 wave, and the country has been in a strict lockdown. There were 258 deaths and 14,925 new cases the day before Australia’s arrival in Dhaka on Thursday. Pulling off the series without incident will be important for the BCB’s home season ahead, given New Zealand are expected to arrive in early September to play five T20Is before England travel for three T20Is and the same number of ODIs.

Luke Wright advocates staging Blast 'in a block' as quarter-finals loom after five-week hiatus

“Finals Day is nearly a month away and after this everyone goes back into four-day cricket”

Matt Roller23-Aug-2021

Asked to draw up a schedule for a T20 competition from a blank calendar, few could devise something as illogical as what has been served up for this season’s Vitality Blast: 126 group games in a 39-day window, a five-week gap before the quarter-finals, then three more weeks before Finals Day in mid-September.The result is a tournament that lacks any sense of flowing narrative throughout the season, with long breaks between rounds, players coming and going at various stages and teams who had gone on winning runs to reach the knockouts having to reacquaint themselves with one another after a month apart. The root cause is the Hundred, which now occupies the midsummer headline slot and has forced the Blast to adapt but that tournament was voted for by the counties in the first instance and is not going anywhere soon. For the Blast to survive and retain its popularity – tickets have flown for three out of the four quarter-finals – it must adapt and address its relationship with the Hundred.”Everything I’ve read so far in the papers has been critical of the scheduling but not many people are coming up with solutions, and that is the hardest part,” Luke Wright, who returns from Hundred duty to captain Sussex against Yorkshire at Chester-le-Street on Tuesday night, said. “How do you make it ideal for both white-ball and red-ball cricket, and make everything fair for everyone?Related

Sussex seal quarter-final spot as Archer makes low-key return

“Personally, I think it’d be nice to have the Blast done in a block. Finals Day is nearly a month away and after this quarter-final everyone goes back into four-day cricket. That means for any team if you have any sort of momentum, you lose it, and most people will lose their overseas players because it’s so far away.”I don’t think that’s ideal and you’d really want it pretty soon after the quarter-finals. They’re all this week, so this weekend being Finals Day would probably be ideal. People would be in T20 mode – or in this case coming from the Hundred – and going into it fresh rather than from a massive break or coming in from four-day cricket. It would be nice to bring that forward.”There is every chance that Wright will get his wish in 2022. The managing director of county cricket, Neil Snowball, told the this month that the ECB is exploring the possibility of completing the Blast before the Hundred starts. With the Commonwealth Games – which features women’s T20 cricket – running until early August, the most likely outcome is that the Hundred will shift slightly later in the summer, with the Blast’s knockout stages following straight on from the groups in late July.As well as solving the issues that Wright addresses, that will add relevance to the wildcard draft – in which Hundred teams select a player based on Blast performances – which took place almost unnoticed this year, two weeks before the end of the group stages. There is no prospect of the Blast or the Hundred being scrapped so the two have to coexist. In the meantime, Sussex and the seven other quarter-finalists have to buckle up and get on with it but that is easier said than done. Take Wright, the leading run-scorer in Blast history, as an example: he scored 306 runs at a strike rate of 156.12 in the Blast’s group stages but found himself running the drinks for Trent Rockets in the Hundred given their top-order strength, meaning his last pro innings was over a month ago.”I went into it in real good form from the Blast but we’d signed three top-order batters [Alex Hales, Dawid Malan and D’Arcy Short] so it was always going to be difficult,” he said. “I actually had a few other Hundred teams trying to work out if I could transfer across to play for them but that’s not allowed under the current rules. Most of the team have been playing but I’m one of the few that hasn’t.”Sussex are close to full strength for the first time this summer heading into their quarter-final. Jofra Archer is injured and Ollie Robinson is on Test duty but George Garton, Chris Jordan and Tymal Mills all return after spearheading Southern Brave’s Hundred triumph and Rashid Khan is available for his third Blast game of the summer, having shared a dressing room with Wright at Trent Rockets.”We’ve had people presuming that Sussex are like a franchise team when we’re full-strength but the thing people don’t realise is that when those guys aren’t around, we’re not like the Test-ground teams with big, strong squads and we have loads of young lads coming in. To get through like we did in the group stages without those guys being available all the time was a fantastic effort.”We’ve got a lot of boys who won the Hundred and seem in great form so hopefully they can carry it on for us. Most of the lads are in top form and those guys at the Brave were unbelievable. They’ll be confident and feeling good so we’ll get them rested up today and then see if we can feed off that.”Rash has always been great for Sussex in terms of wanting to play. He could have easily not pitched up here for us and gone back with everything going on but he’s a credit to himself and is such an impressive guy. The way he has handled himself is unbelievable; I couldn’t even imagine what it must be like for him, having his family back [in Afghanistan]. I’ve played with the odd overseas player around the world who can park it off a little bit at times but Rash is all-in. He gives his all for every team he plays for.”David Wiese will be Sussex’s other overseas player on Thursday after Travis Head’s return to Australia and after consecutive quarter-final defeats they hope their fortunes will change. James Kirtley, a Twenty20 Cup winner in 2009 while rooming with Wright, is in his first season as head coach and his meticulous, analytical approach is a contrast to Jason Gillespie’s hands-off attitude in previous seasons. They face a Yorkshire side without Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan, on England duty, and Lockie Ferguson due to Covid – and without home advantage due to the Test match at Headingley. “At this point in the competition you’re not going to be playing any poor teams,” Wright said. “Being at Durham, there might not be so many fans in which is a shame but even still, it’s going to be a great game of cricket.”

Lost the ball every 3.4 touches: Lopetegui must now drop 5/10 West Ham star

West Ham United’s torrid start to the season continued on Saturday afternoon after a 1-1 draw away to Brentford. It was a frustrating day for the Hammers, who went 1-0 down inside the first minute. That goal meant the Bees became the first side in Premier League history to score in the first minute of a game three games in a row.

After Bryan Mbeumo’s early strike, a superb volley from inside the penalty box, it became a more even affair, but it took the Hammers until the 54th minute to draw level, thanks to Tomas Soucek. West Ham managed to hold onto a point despite late Brentford pressure.

Brentford'sBryanMbeumocelebrates scoring

For Julen Lopetegui’s side, they simply cannot catch a break this term. The East London outfit have still managed just one win from their opening six games, having lost three of those and drawing the other two. They currently sit in 14th place in the table, on just five points and with a minus-four goal difference.

It was a far-from-ideal performance once more from the Hammers, and, rather disappointingly, some of their biggest names are struggling to find their best form this season. That was certainly a theme against Brentford on Saturday.

West Ham’s big stars struggle

It was an important summer window at the London Stadium, with West Ham making some big-name attacking signings, including Niclas Fullkrug and Crycensio Summerville, to add to the firepower they already possessed in attacking areas.

Crysencio Summerville for West Ham

Despite having 19 shots at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday, as per Sofascore, the Hammers had three of those on target. Worryingly, they had an expected goals tally of less than one, with a remarkably low 0.73xG. Given the number of shots they had, the chances they created were not really substantial at all.

West Ham’s big-name duo of Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus did not perform to their usual standards against the Bees. Both were substituted, with the Ghanaian attacker brought off at halftime, although Bowen was replaced by Andy Iriving in the 92nd minute.

Kudus failed to create a chance, and although the West Ham skipper managed three, he had an expected assists total of just 0.16xA. Between them, they lost the ball 33 times, with Kudus losing possession on 11 occasions and the England international 22.

West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen

Despite their poor performances, neither attacker was arguably West Ham’s worst player, with their fellow big-name star, Lucas Paqueta, also struggling against Brentford.

Paqueta’s stats vs. Brentford

It has not been the best start to the season for Brazil international Paqueta. He has now scored just one goal and is yet to register an assist this season, despite having started all but one of the Hammers’ Premier League games.

West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta

Against Brentford, it was very much a similar story for the former Olympique Lyon midfielder. Like Bowen and Kudus, the 27-year-old was also substituted against Thomas Frank’s side, being replaced by Summerville on the 76-minute mark.

His stats suggest that it was not an unjustifiable change from Lopetegui, with the normally superb Brazilian struggling to retain the ball. Paqueta, who had 58 touches, had a pass accuracy of just 78% and lost the ball 17 times. That worked out at an average of squandering possession once every 3.4 touches of the ball.

Paqueta’s disappointing performance earned him a rating of just 5/10 from The Standard journalist Dom Smith. He explained that the Brazilian ‘struggled to make an impact’ on the game, before seemingly complaining about Lopetegui’s decision to substitute him.

The Hammers will no doubt be hoping their big stars can get back to their best, as they look to turn around this bout of poor early-season form.

Liverpool wasted £25m on Klopp signing who earned far more than Diaz

Liverpool haven’t exactly got the easiest run of fixtures on their return from the international break, with tricky tests in the Premier League and the Champions League coming up.

Both Chelsea and Arsenal stand in the way of Arne Slot’s men when top-flight action kicks back into gear, whilst an away trip to RB Leipzig then awaits his confident group away from league action, who are two wins from two in the prestigious competition.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot-1

It will be intriguing to see if the Dutchman brings Luis Diaz back into his XI for the home clash with Enzo Maresca’s Blues, with the Colombian attacker on the substitutes bench for the majority of his side’s slender 1-0 away win at Crystal Palace last time out.

Diaz's form this season

Slot had the luxury of dropping Diaz knowing that Oliver Glasner’s Eagles were languishing near the foot of the league, with Cody Gakpo then stealing the headlines with an assist for Diogo Jota’s winner in place of the Reds number seven.

Luis Diaz celebrates

Still, Chelsea will be a far harder match for his table-topping side so Diaz could be thrown back into the mix, having been in electric form this season in the Premier League.

The 27-year-old has five goals and one assist next to his name from seven clashes in the league, undoubtedly helping his side pick up six wins from seven games to sit at the very top of the tree as a result.

Two of those strikes came away at Manchester United at the start of last month, as Slot’s flashy away side showed no mercy at Old Trafford in a comprehensive 3-0 demolition job, making the likes of Casemiro look like a school boy with some of his errors on the day.

Whilst Liverpool’s decision to bring Diaz into the building in 2022 continues to pay off, the Reds haven’t always struck gold in the transfer market in the attacking positions, with one purchase in 2018 going down as a notable misfire despite his cult hero status among some.

Shaqiri's time at Liverpool

Xherdan Shaqiri was arguably a perplexing buy when he arrived through the door at Anfield five years ago. Indeed, Liverpool swooped in for the Swiss attacker’s services after Stoke City fell down to the Championship despite with Gary Neville describing the winger as “unprofessional”.

The Reds picked him up for a fee of £13m, hopeful that he could prove to be a shrewd capture, with the 5 foot 7 menace showing off his class on the books of Bayern Munich and FC Basel.

Away from a bright first campaign that saw Shaqiri’s exploits help Klopp’s side lift the Champions League, injury issues then began to trouble him which saw his minutes significantly dry up.

Only managing to make 33 appearances across his final two campaigns, the Swiss winger just couldn’t justify his hefty pay packet playing for the Reds, which saw him rake in £80k-per-week and £4.1m-per-year across his three-season stretch at the club, according to Capology.

Diaz only earns a lesser £55k-per-week in contrast, with the Colombian forward perhaps edging closer to a wage increase down the line if he keeps up his stellar easy season form for Slot’s men.

Taking into account Shaqiri’s £13m transfer fee, on top of his yearly wages, the ex-Bayern man would cost the Reds a sizeable chunk overall at £25m.

Whilst Diaz aims to continue firing on all cylinders, Shaqiri now finds himself back in his native Switzerland playing for Basel, as the 33-year-old begins to contemplate the end point of his playing days.

He did have some moments of magic in a Reds strip, with this strike against Man United in 2018 late on a fond memory Liverpool fans will still latch onto, but he did end up costing the Premier League club lots of money that could have better spent elsewhere.

Kent have won the LV= Insurance County Championship Division Three title after a morning of high drama at Canterbury, where they beat Middlesex by two wickets.Kent finished on 375 for 8, but they were in trouble early after Toby Roland-Jones brilliantly ran out Tawanda Muyeye for 89.They also lost Darren Stevens for 14, before Marcus O’Riordan and Grant Stewart revived them with a stand of 48 and Matt Milnes hit the winning runs.Kent began the fourth day on 275 for 5, needing another 98 to win and as the batsmen walked out a member in the Knott-Underwood stand yelled: “You were seeing it like a football yesterday TS, good luck,” at Muyeye.Middlesex had dragged themselves back into a game that had been drifting away from them when Tim Murtagh had dismissed centurion Ollie Robinson with the final ball on day three. But Kent made steady progress at the start and added 20 runs before Muyeye chased a single and was halfway down the pitch when he was sent back by Stevens and run out by a direct hit from Roland-Jones, who had barely a stump to aim at.A visibly distraught Muyeye trudged back to the pavilion and Stevens was then caught by a diving Sam Robson at second slip, after edging Roland-Jones.At that point Kent were 310 for 7 but O’Riordan and Stewart took them to within 16 of victory when the former edged Martin Andersson for 26 and was caught at second slip by Robson. As the tension mounted, Kent scrambled a single and a shy at the stumps went for four overthrows. Stewart survived a loud appeal for caught behind off Andersson and hit the next ball for four to reduce the target to two.Kent secured the title when Milnes steered Roland-Jones to third man, giving them 19 points and Middlesex three, leaving the visitors as runners-up.
