As bad as Trossard: Arteta must axe 4/10 Arsenal ace who lost the ball 16x

Arsenal are in a rut. That’s putting it kindly too. The Gunners dreamed of taking home the Premier League title at the beginning of the season. There were also aspirations to go deep in the Champions League.

While their continental hopes are far from over, their form as a whole is rather worrying now. Their difficult patch continued against Inter on Wednesday evening, losing 1-0 for a consecutive game.

Everything that could go wrong is going wrong. For a side that prides itself on not conceding goals, they have now kept just two clean sheets in their last seven games. It’s not ideal whatsoever.

While that’s happening they’re also failing to find the net with much regularity. Having not scored against Newcastle and now against Inter, the sight of Martin Odegaard returning to fitness in injury time at the San Siro was a welcome sight.

Yet, they face Chelsea next. Gulp. Mikel Arteta’s men will no doubt improve but they need to do so pretty immediately. The ship is sinking without a trace and their Spanish tactician must wrestle back some momentum.

So, where did it all go wrong on Wednesday? Take your pick.

Why Arsenal lost to Inter in the Champions League

The tone was set early on when rampaging right-back Denzel Dumfries galloped forward and rattled the crossbar with a rasping drive.

Inter were by far the better team but the away side grew into things the closer we got towards the break. However, once again, the officials were not Arsenal’s best friend.

A ball was swung in, deflected goalbound but then struck the arm of summer signing Mikel Merino. He could not do anything about it and in the Premier League – due to rules regarding the proximity of the player in relation to the ball – it would have been disallowed. Things are different in Europe, though. Work that one out.

The penalty was given and upstepped the ever-reliable Hakan Calhanoglu who stroked the ball home with ease. It was a gutting blow but to their credit, the English side did fight back in the second half, all to no avail.

Without Odegaard, Arsenal have found it difficult to carve out regular goal-scoring opportunities. This was a similar story to the defeat at St James’ Park but their xG was supremely better on this occasion, rising from a dismal 1.05 last Saturday to 2.22 in Milan.

Yet, the vast majority of their chances came from open-play crosses or set-pieces. The Gunners had great joy from wide areas but Inter were comfortable in their shape and resolutely defended a whopping 13 corners and 46 crosses.

19 of those balls into the box came from Bukayo Saka’s boot but he only completed three which just about summed up the night. Saka was lively but there weren’t many other faces in red or white who deserved praise.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Arsenal's biggest underperformers against Inter

Besides the penalty incident, the Gunners were as safe as houses at the back. It was in attack where they really laboured.

Once again Belgian star Leandro Trossard was poor in a central attacking area and was outclassed by Ethan Nwaneri who appeared as a late sub. You do wonder what the teenager has to do in order to start games.

He nearly rescued a point for the visitors, turning defender Stefan de Vrij deep into injury time before unleashing a shot that sailed over the bar.

Trossard too had one shot at goal but it was incredibly unmemorable. So was his performance as a whole, truth be told, registering just two key passes and losing possession on a frequent basis.

That said, Gabriel Martinelli also deserves some criticism. The Brazilian is such an exciting player on his day but unfortunately, over the last year or so we’ve not seen the best of him.

Often isolated on the left-hand side, the former Ituano star does lack support from his teammates but this was yet another match where he was indecisive and poor with his final actions.

Handed a 4/10 match rating by The Express, they summed things up succinctly, suggesting that he ‘must begin to stamp his authority on matches on a more frequent basis.’

That was lacking once again from a player who lost the ball a whopping 16 times on Wednesday night, as well as completing just five of his 13 crosses and winning six of his nine duels. As Arsenal writer Oli Price Bates said on social media after the game, he will have left the manager “fuming” at his inability to fashion goalscoring opportunities.

While Sofascore rated him as the best player on the pitch, it doesn’t tell the full story of a performance that lacked much quality.

Raheem Sterling will be ineligible to face his parent club at the weekend but Martinelli must be dropped. Gabriel Jesus has shown mini signs of revival in recent weeks – scoring against Preston last week – and could feature off the left.

Trossard remains an option to play out on the flanks where he looks far more at home than he does in the middle. Over to you Mikel. Something has to change.

Worth £59m: Everton must regret losing a star who’s rivalling Messi & Kane

Everton manager Sean Dyche will only be too aware that his side face Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City in December.

That’s a run of opponents that would strike fear into any club in the Premier League – including all of the aforementioned. For the Toffees, it’s especially concerning, not least because they are 16th in the standings after 11 matches, only three points above Ipswich Town, who sit in 18th.

Not to be pessimistic, but the Toffees’ present attacking fluency simply will not do. The wintry period is bound to inflict adversity upon the Merseysiders, and the frontline must raise its level.

Everton's flagging frontline

Everton are beset with some rather uninspiring attacking metrics this season, having been one of the least effective attacking outfits in the Premier League.

Some of this struggle owes itself to Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s inability to harness the prolificness that we know lies latent within his skill set, but it is more indicative of Dyche’s style as a whole.

This is hardly an anomaly either. Last term, though Everton were comfortable despite being hit with an eight-point deduction, they scored just 40 goals across 38 league fixtures, better than only bottom-finishing Sheffield United.

Everton stars Jordan Pickford and Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Everton need something… more. Calvert-Lewin is obviously excellent on his day, provides a focal presence. Iliman Ndiaye is an electric and exciting winger, while Dwight McNeil has hit a new layer of potency this term.

But the Blues need to up the ante in the final third if they are to finally break the bonds that have shackled them to endless frustration around the relegation zone over the past several years.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Ademola Lookman would be perfect, but the Atalanta forward hasn’t played for Everton in quite a while now.

Everton flop is now rivalling Messi & Kane

90min’s Sean Walsh has described Lookman as a “superstar”, and it’s probably an apt thing to say, in truth, for the versatile forward has been brilliant in recent years and scored a hat-trick to dismantle Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final last season, sending Xabi Alonso’s immortal team into a tail-spin.

Rewarded for his triumph by being placed 14th in the Men’s Ballon d’Or final rankings, awarded earlier this month, Lookman has certainly come a long way since his struggles to assert himself with Everton in English football.

Indeed, Lookman scored four goals across 48 outings for Everton, having joined the club from Charlton Athletic in a deal worth £11m back in 2017, aged 19.

In fairness, while Lookman didn’t manage to bring his raw qualities together at Goodison Park, he did depart for a pretty penny, with RB Leipzig signing the rising star for a £22.5m fee in 2019, having previously taken him into their German brood in 2017/18 – where he posted five goals and four assists across only 11 Bundesliga appearances.

He’s since gone from strength to strength, with his hat-trick for La Dea last season completing a haul of 17 goals and ten assists across all competitions.

The 27-year-old hasn’t exactly slowed down this year, already boasting eight goals and five assists across 14 matches for Atalanta, instrumental in helping Gian Pieri Gasperini’s second-placed side challenge for the Serie A title.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 5% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 1% for shot-creating actions, the top 5% for progressive passes, the top 3% for progressive carries and the top 1% for tackles per 90.

Clearly, he’s not just a goalscorer. He’s not even just a well-rounded, multi-faceted attacking outlet. Lookman is a force to be reckoned with for the Italians, operating beyond the confines of expected positional virtues, instead producing performances that encompass so many areas of the pitch.

Well, would you take a look at that. Lookman’s keenly clinical edge is seeing him put in some pretty impressive conversations, with CIES Football Observatory conveying a list – via Wyscout’s statistical system – that reveals his goal-contribution rate is up there with the best.

Namely, Lionel Messi and Harry Kane.

Omar Marmoush and Lookman

Neither forward needs an introduction, but the very fact that Lookman’s vein of performance has been sustained and directed at Atalanta, to a point that puts him alongside such names (as well as Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski) is a rueful thing for Everton, who might have helped him realise his potential on Merseyside in some alternate football reality.

This summer, top European outfits such as Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain were interested in signing the Nigerian, and Atalanta responded by demanding €70m (£59m) recompense for the loss of their trophy-winning talisman. This, obviously, dissuaded the parties in question.

Even so, he’d have fetched a pretty penny. Perhaps another suitor, in different circumstances, would have forked out a greater fee for this mercurial talent.

Ademola Lookman

It could have been so much more for Everton, who need a striker of Lookman’s quality, and could definitely do with banking on such an illustrious star.

Australia romp to nine-wicket win and 1-0 lead

Pat Cummins said a cautious approach was taken with managing Hazlewood and that there will be an eye to future Tests when a decision is taken on whether he lines up in the day-night contest which starts on Thursday.”He’s a little bit sore,” Cummins said. “He came out today and was able to bowl, got through a really good spell. We just managed him, it’s a five Test summer and he’s key for us so don’t want to blow him out of the water on day three.”Nothing too serious but didn’t want it to turn into a huge injury. The key is we don’t want to put him in jeopardy for the whole series. We’ll take our time.”Jhye Richardson, who played two Tests in 2019, and the uncapped Michael Neser, fresh from a five-wicket haul for Australia A against England Lions, are the other two quicks in the Test squad should a replacement be needed.Warner, meanwhile, is nursing painful ribs after a blow on the second day against Ben Stokes. He was off the field throughout England’s second innings and did not open in Australia’s small chase with Alex Carey promoted up the other. Australia said that Warner had been available to bat but with just 20 runs needed the risk wasn’t worth it”Think he had a hit earlier and got through,” Cummins said. “Still pretty sore but should be right for Adelaide. We’ll monitor him but think he’ll be fine.”Usman Khawaja is the spare batter in the squad having been beaten to the No. 5 spot by Travis Head. Although largely a middle-order player, he has opened in five Tests – including a day-nighter against South Africa in Adelaide where he made 145 – and has an average of 96.80 in the position. However, it would be a disruption for Australia if they needed to make a change particularly given the uncertainty over Warner’s opening partner. Marcus Harris was unconvincing in Brisbane as he fell for 3 in the first innings and was saved by an inside edge against Chris Woakes from being lbw for a duck in the second.

Exciting Crystal Palace academy star could be their next Zaha

Crystal Palace’s squad has been built really well in the past few years, with a mixture of experienced Premier League players being signed, some astute youngsters being poached for good fees, and even bringing some academy prospects of their own through.

Players like Marc Guehi, Adam Wharton, Eberechi Eze and Dean Henderson were all signed for good fees relative to their potential ability.

Alongside clever additions such as Jefferson Lerma, Daichi Kamada, Daniel Munoz, Will Hughes, Ismaila Sarr, and Jean-Phillipe Mateta, who are more experienced members of the squad.

But it’s their academy that has plenty of promise to add more to this squad in the next year or so, adding to Tyrick Mitchell and Nathaniel Clyne who are the only real starters in the squad to come through the academy.

Crystal Palace's upcoming academy stars

One of the brightest stars in the academy is winger, Asher Agbinone, who has made two sub appearances totalling four minutes for the Eagles this season. Oliver Glasner has used him from the bench, stating he has “a lot of pace” and calling him a “very good talent”.

Justin Devenny is another to have broken through this season, making two senior appearances alongside his eight U21 appearances this campaign. The 21-year-old made a heroic impact just last weekend, scoring his first Premier League goal against Aston Villa, as the sides drew 2-2 at Villa Park.

But one academy product who is currently out on loan, and could return to make a real impact for the Eagles, is Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, a player who teammate Marc Guehi praised as a player with “great potential” last season.

Why Jesurun Rak-Sakyi could be the new Zaha

Rak-Sakyi is making waves in the Championship this term, and has impressed of late. Indeed, he notably scored in Sheffield United’s 3-0 victory over Oxford on Tuesday night, also making three key passes in the game.

So far this season, the 22-year-old has made 17 appearances for the Blades, scoring four goals and providing two assists in 884 minutes. Sheffield United currently sit top of the Championship, and Rak-Sakyi has played a big part in that so far this season.

So, how could he fit into the current squad at Selhurst Park?

When comparing Rak-Sakyi to Wilfried Zaha in his last season at Palace, and new signing Sarr this season, the 22-year-old impressively comes out on top in seven of the ten metrics analysed, providing better output (goals + assists), more progressive carries per 90, and more creative actions such as take-ons, key passes and shot-creating actions.

These are all traits that Palace have been missing since losing Zaha, and also losing Michael Olise in the summer. Rak-Sakyi clearly looks like he could be the man to provide that extra creative edge from wide areas, certainly in comparison to summer signing Sarr who hasn’t had the fastest start to life with the Eagles.

rak-sakyi-crystal-palace

Once the Eagles youngster returns next season, if Sarr fails to impress to a satisfactory level, he could well be given a chance in the first team, enabling him to finally become the Zaha replacement that Palace fans have been craving since his departure.

Stirling and Hales fifties help Islamabad ace 169 chase

Rutherford made an unbeaten 70 to lift Peshawar from the doldrums of 35 for 4 but it wasn’t enough

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Jan-2022

Alex Hales raises the bat after reaching his fifty•PSL

Paul Stirling struck the third fastest fifty in PSL history. Alex Hales sent every fourth ball he faced to the boundary and finished 82 not out. And Islamabad United overhauled a target of 169 with nine wickets and 25 deliveries to spare. This was pure domination. The only time Peshawar Zalmi even stood a chance was when Sherfane Rutherford was batting. Coming in at 35 for 4 in the seventh over, the big-hitting West Indies allrounder marshalled an incredible lower-order fightback. He scored 70 of the 133 runs added to the scoreboard while he was at the crease with an unbridled array of shots that defied the whole match situation. A hat-trick of boundaries – 6, 4, 6 – against the Islamabad captain Shadab Khan was the pick of the lot, and for a while the total he got his team up to – 168 for 6 – seemed competitive.Paul Stirling began his PSL 2022 in grand style•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

But then Stirling opened up his shoulders and started breaking records. The Ireland batter struck seven of the ten balls he faced to the fence. Wahab Riaz, Sohail Khan, Usman Qadir – none of them were spared. Islamabad flew to 78 for 0 at the end of the powerplay – an aggregate second only to their own 97 for 0 in 2021. From then on, there was very little jeopardy left in the chase. The two openers cruised to their respective half-centuries – Stirling in 18 balls, Hales in 32 – and the result of the match became a foregone conclusion.

Liverpool star who left under Rodgers is now on par with Mbappe & Haaland

Liverpool’s victory over Real Madrid in midweek was their first over the Spanish side in eight games, stretching back to the stunning 4-0 thrashing of Los Blancos in 2009.

Despite their strong start to the campaign, many had claimed the Anfield side had yet to defeat a genuine world-class team. The 2-0 victory in midweek will surely put that argument to rest.

Ending this winless run against the 15-time European champions will also give them a psychological boost, especially if the two sides meet in the latter stages of the Champions League this season.

The barren spell started way back in 2014 when Brendan Rodgers was in charge. Having finished second in the 2013/14 Premier League table, the Reds qualified for the group stages, drawn in the same group against Madrid.

A 3-0 loss at Anfield was followed by a 1-0 defeat at the Bernabeu as Rodgers’ side struggled in the competition.

Despite coming so close to the league title just months before, Rodgers failed to truly improve his squad during the summer transfer window.

Liverpool’s business in the 2014 summer transfer window

Rodgers had money to spend ahead of the 2014/15 campaign and with the prospect of playing against Europe’s elite, the supporters looked forward to an exciting summer.

Southampton were targeted, as Adam Lallana, Ricki Lambert and Dejan Lovren made the move to Merseyside. Lazar Markovic was one of the more exciting signings, as the Reds splashed out £20m on exciting Benfica winger Lazar Markovic, while Mario Balotelli returned to the Premier League.

Mario-balotelli-liverpool

A couple of interesting signings for sure, but they weren’t quite of the required quality to fire the club to glory during the 2014/15 season.

While money was available due to Champions League qualification, Rodgers secured a financial windfall for one of his key players – Luis Suárez.

Liverpool's sale of Luiz Suarez

The 2013/14 season was a remarkable one for the Uruguayan as he scored a staggering 31 goals in the Premier League while registering 13 assists. This was made even more special considering the striker missed the first five matches of the season due to suspension which had carried over from the previous campaign.

These performances under Rodgers were bound to attract attention from elsewhere and when the summer transfer window opened, it was clear Suarez would be leaving Anfield.

Indeed, when Barcelona came in with an offer of £75m, Suarez left for La Liga, linking up with fellow South Americans Neymar and Lionel Messi.

He is still remembered fondly among the Anfield faithful and if he remained at the club, just how many goals would he have scored?

Luis Suárez’s Liverpool statistics

The centre-forward signed for the club in January 2011 with Kenny Dalglish spending around £22.7m to lure him from Ajax.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

He signed alongside Andy Carroll and he went slightly under the radar due to the Reds spending £35m on the Englishman. This new strike partnership looked like it could fire Liverpool to glory in the future, especially given both players were under the age of 24 at the time.

Only one left their mark at Anfield, however, as Saurez became one of the best strikers in the world.

He netted 17 times during the 2011/12 campaign as the Reds won the League Cup while reaching the FA Cup final, before adding another 30 goals the following season – although this was marred towards the end when he was given a suspension due to biting Branislav Ivanovic in a tie against Chelsea.

Despite this, 2013/14 was incredible for the player. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher lavished praise on the Uruguayan for his exploits at the club, saying:

Despite leaving Liverpool more than a decade ago, the 37-year-old is still going strong.

What Luis Saurez has done since leaving Liverpool

The former Ajax gem spent six seasons at Barcelona, finally getting his hands on the Champions League trophy while scoring 195 goals for the La Liga side.

A spell at Atlético Madrid saw Suarez secure yet another league title, before he had spells at Club Nacional in his homeland and Gremio in Brazil.

It was his move to MLS side Inter Miami in December 2023 which has seen him enjoy an Indian summer to his impressive career. Linking up with former Barcelona teammate Messi in Florida, the duo aimed to fire the club to glory.

Across 30 MLS and MLS Cup Playoff games during the 2024 season, Suarez scored 21 goals along with grabbing nine assists as Miami ended the regular campaign with a points total of 74, the highest in the history of the league.

They were surprisingly defeated by Atlanta United in the first round of the playoffs, but for his performances, the striker was rewarded with a new one-year contract extension.

“I’m very happy, very excited to continue for another year and to be able to enjoy being here with this fanbase, which for us is like family,” Suarez said.

His exploits for Miami have even seen the player nominated as one of the best attackers at the Best FIFA Football Awards 2024, ranking him alongside the likes of Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland to name just a couple of stars.

He might not win the title, but just being named alongside some of these players is a testament to Suarez’s amazing longevity and the fact he is still scoring regularly for his club side.

Forever a Liverpool icon, the Uruguayan will be aiming to finish his career on a high next term by leading Miami to MLS glory, that’s for sure.
