Estamos focados jogo a jogo.

Devine 108 in vain as Matthews-powered West Indies pull off massive opening-day upset

Matthews hits maiden WC century; Dottin picks up two wickets – and plays her part in a run-out – in manic final over to seal the game

Sophie Devine: To take the game till last over, shows grit of the team

The 2022 Women’s ODI World Cup started with a big upset result on the opening night as Hayley Matthews’ 118 trumped Sophie Devine’s 108, and Deandra Dottin stole the show when she picked up two wickets and played her part in a run-out in a manic last over to consign hosts New Zealand to a shock three-run defeat. The clincher, though, might have been Chinelle Henry’s return catch on her second attempt to dismiss Devine, with New Zealand needing 45 off 29. That helped her make amends – tellingly, as it turned out – for dropping Devine earlier in the night; West Indies’ fielding swung between excellent and poor. The count for shelled chances, five until that point, ended on six.At one point, New Zealand needed just 24 off 17 with Jess Kerr and the experienced Katey Martin on course to avert an upset. The two picked 14 off the penultimate over to bring it down to a-run-a-ball in the final over. Enter Dottin. The result: 1W1WW. Game: West Indies. With that over, her only one in the game, Dottin somewhat stole Player of the Match Matthews’ thunder, but Matthews played a huge role with bat – she became the third West Indies woman to score an ODI World Cup century – and then ball, when she returned 2 for 41. Matthews was promoted to open in the absence of Rashada Williams, who is recovering from a concussion. After Devine opted to bowl, three fours from Dottin in the opening over set West Indies’ campaign rolling. Their first four scoring shots were all boundaries, with Matthews driving a full-toss past cover for her first runs.Deandra Dottin bowled the final over against New Zealand and produced a sequence of 1 W 1 W W to seal the game•Getty Images

Lea Tahuhu, the pick of the New Zealand bowlers with 3 for 57, struck back with Dottin’s wicket first ball of her second over, which, however, cost 13, with Matthews stroking three fours. She displayed her range with the first of many cuts, pulls, and back-foot punches that adorned her century, the first by a West Indies woman in an ODI in New Zealand.Along the way, she strung fifty-plus stands with Stafanie Taylor, Shemaine Campbelle and Chedean Nation.Apart from the Kerrs – Amelia and Jess – and Hannah Rowe, all the other New Zealand bowlers came in for punishment from Matthews. She was particularly aggressive against 17-year-old Fran Jonas, New Zealand’s second-youngest ODI World Cup debutant, and reached her ODI fifty off just 55 balls, soon after which West Indies lost Taylor for 30.Campbelle joined Matthews in the middle for the rebuild as she transferred her reliance from boundaries to strike rotation. In the 29th over, she upped the offensive again, clubbing Jonas for two fours in the first two balls of the 11-run over. In all, she struck 16 fours, and a six off Devine. Her century would come off a scamper for two. After Matthews fell, Anisa Mohammed’s six-ball 11 in the end lifted West Indies to their third-highest ODI World Cup total.New Zealand had never successfully chased more than 208 in an ODI World Cup, and their chase began on a wobbly note.A deflection by bowler Henry off a Devine straight drive ended Suzie Bates’ six-ball innings in the fourth over. West Indies then frustrated Devine and Amelia Kerr with an off-side-heavy field and backed it up with a persistent outside-the-off-stump line and terrific discipline on the outfield. The home side managed only 41 for 1, as opposed to West Indies’ 54 for 2, in the first powerplay.Sophie Devine struggled at times, but stayed the course to get to her sixth ODI century•Getty Images

Matthews followed up her success with the bat with a key strike off just her second delivery – bowling with a tweaked left hamstring and Kinesio taped-up right arm, she trapped the in-form Amelia lbw in the 12th over for what was the batter’s first score below 30 in six ODIs.New Zealand reached 114 for 2 at the halfway mark and needed 146 off her final 25 overs, and a slew of let-offs helped them at that stage. First, a run-parched Devine powered Aaliyah Alleyne to Shamilia Connell at mid-on only to be dropped, when on 36. She then gritted out a tough phase with a 76 stand with Amy Satterthwaite and reached her fifty in 70 balls, her first in ODIs since October 2020.In the 24th over, three balls after coming in as the injured Connell’s substitute, Cherry-Ann Fraser handed Satterthwaite a lifeline when on 22 off Mohammed. The veteran offspinner, however, eventually trapped Satterthwaite lbw, becoming the first spinner to pick 300 wickets in international cricket. She took out Tahuhu next ball but was unable to bag a hat-trick.On 66, Devine received a second reprieve when Taylor, stationed at midwicket, couldn’t hit the stumps at the non-striker’s end. On 74, it was Henry’s turn to shell another chance off Devine, who reached her 3000th ODI run when she moved to 82.New Zealand needed 66 off the last ten overs. Nine of those Devine scored. Her hundred, second in ODI World Cups and sixth in the format, was all determination and patience, but it wasn’t enough on the night.

New era RCB face Punjab's batting might at unfamiliar DY Patil

Agarwal’s men boast a lot of power-hitting talent, but will be without Bairstow for their season opener

Alagappan Muthu26-Mar-2022

What kind of Kohli, the batter, will we see this time around?•BCCI/IPL

Big pictureA lot of IPL teams, for a lot of the time, go into the auction to buy back the players they’d been forced to let go. And it makes for fun viewing because their rivals always drive up the price. Punjab Kings though did things a little differently. They retained two, bought back five and said #okbai to 17. Then, with money to burn, they built a brand new team and it just bristles with power-hitting talent. Their former captain openly admitted he couldn’t play the way he wanted to because he was worried about what would happen if he fell cheaply. Mayank Agarwal won’t have any such concerns.Royal Challengers Bangalore will be the first team who will take on the challenge of containing a line-up that has Shikhar Dhawan at the top, Liam Livingstone in the middle and Odean Smith at the end.It is a daunting enough task without the added complication of no longer having access to their top-wicket taker anymore. Life after Virat Kohli (as captain) and AB de Villiers (as, well, Superman) is kicking off with a proper test.Related

Kohli: RCB working towards du Plessis' vision

Fantasy Pick: Consistent Mayank Agarwal and Faf du Plessis your go-to picks

In the newsFaf du Plessis is the man charged with leading the Royal Challengers transition and he can breathe slightly easier, if only for now, because Jonny Bairstow and Kagiso Rabada won’t be among the opposition on Sunday on account of national duties. That doesn’t mean there aren’t other issues. Glenn Maxwell – one of RCB’s best players in 2021 – will not be available for the first two games and Josh Hazlewood, who lifted the title with Chennai Super Kings just a few months ago, will be arriving late after a successful tour of Pakistan.Likely XIsRoyal Challengers Bangalore: 1 Faf du Plessis (capt), 2 Anuj Rawat, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Sherfane Rutherford, 5 Mahipal Lomror, 6 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 7 Wanindu Hasaranga, 8 David Willey, 9 Harshal Patel, 10 Shahbaz Ahmed/Karn Sharma, 11 Mohammed SirajPunjab Kings: 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Mayank Agarwal (capt), 3 Liam Livingstone, 4 Bhanuka Rajapaksa, 5 Shahrukh Khan, 6 Prabhsimran Singh (wk), 7 Odean Smith, 8 Nathan Ellis/Harpreet Brar, 9 Sandeep Sharma, 10 Arshdeep Singh, 11 Rahul ChaharStrategy punt David Willey is a powerplay expert. His record – 81 wickets in 139 innings – suggests he almost guarantees you an early wicket. And with Hazlewood out, he could be the perfect new-ball bowler for RCB. Plus, given the DY Patil stadium actually assists pace bowling, there’s even a chance that the England left-armer might do something that’s been impossible lately – swing the white cricket ball. A lot of teams may resort to taking the pace off to contain the Royal Challengers line-up. Among 20-plus players to have scored 100-plus runs against spin last season, Kohli had the lowest strike-rate (100 from 10 innings) and du Plessis had the third-lowest (108.08 in 12 innings). Dinesh Karthik’s average of 20 against spin was the fourth lowest for a batter in IPL 2021 (min 10 innings). Punjab will be eager to exploit this weakness, especially since they won’t have to worry about Maxwell throwing a spanner into the works.Stats that matter The DY Patil stadium has hosted 17 IPL matches so far. Ten of those have been won by the chasing team and you’ll know why when you see the average first-innings score: 147. Agarwal will be captaining a cricket team at senior level for only the fourth time in his career. And while a lack of experience like that can be a challenge to overcome, it must help that the 31-year old now knows his game inside out. Agarwal has become especially good at pacing his innings and is an absolute menace in the middle overs (7-16) with a strike rate 158.68. Among those with at least 50 runs in this period since IPL 2019, only four others fare better. du Plessis loves playing against Punjab. His average – 61 – and number of fifties – 7 – are both way higher (42 vs KKR and 3 vs RCB) than his records against any other IPL team. Sandeep Sharma has dismissed Kohli an IPL record seven times.

Dyche has found Everton’s very own Alexander-Arnold in surprise star

Everton would have walked away from their Premier League stalemate with Arsenal as the far happier side, having frustrated the Gunners all afternoon by putting in a defensively dogged display.

Mikel Arteta’s men would only muster up one big chance all contest consequently, as Sean Dyche’s visitors intentionally sat back in order to pick up a share of the points, with Arsenal even amassing a whopping 77% possession.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

The Everton defenders certainly earned their praise come the full-time whistle, therefore, with the likes of James Tarkowski battling hard throughout the 90 minutes to keep stars such as Kai Havertz at bay.

How Everton's defence performed at the Emirates

The aforementioned Toffees captain led by example at the Emirates Stadium alongside his centre-back partner Jarrad Branthwaite, as the ex-Burnley man successfully won four duels alongside making seven clearances to preserve his resolute side’s clean sheet.

Branthwaite also put his towering 6 foot 5 frame to good use with three duels of his own won, whilst Jordan Pickford had to stay alert throughout with five saves tallied up which would constantly frustrate faces such as Bukayo Saka attempting to beat the clued-up 30-year-old.

Whilst Pickford would rightfully win a lot of plaudits at the full-time whistle for some top-notch stops, Ashley Young also put in a gritty display at the back to ensure a draw was sealed, with the ex-Aston Villa man winning a sublime seven duels to routinely thwart Gabriel Martinelli bombing forward.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Everton's very own Alexander-Arnold

It wasn’t just in north London that Young has shone this term. For his relegation-threatened side this campaign, he has starred as an attacking menace, with the 39-year-old rolling back the years to become his side’s answer to Liverpool phenom Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Often operating as a winger during his hay day in the Premier League, Young’s creativity from this more forward-thinking spot is still managing to come to the forefront as he now regularly lines up in a back four.

This season to date, the top-flight veteran has amassed an impressive one goal and three assists, with that solitary strike coming against Wolverhampton Wanderers in a comprehensive 4-0 win just one match before the shut-out at Arsenal.

This resurgence is even more admirable considering there were shouts for Young to be axed from Goodison Park this summer, with his high £40k-per-week wage the topic of many a discussion on Merseyside.

Now, he is more than justifying this steep pay packet, with his numbers not too dissimilar to that of Alexander-Arnold – according to FBRef.

While the Everton veteran is understandably still ranking behind Trent for a host of numbers, you can see the similarities between the two in the way they progress the play via their passing.

Unsurprisingly, Young has more defensive know-how than the Real Madrid-linked 26-year-old too, with more tackles and clearances averaged when glancing at the above table, albeit the Toffees are more defensively active than Liverpool.

It’s been quite the sharp turnaround for the ageing full-back, who will hope these stellar performances keep coming in order to see out the twilight of his playing days in style.

Dyche does have a reputation for getting the most out of experienced heads at his disposal, with the Toffees boss keeping his fingers crossed that Young and Co can continue picking up results like the draw at Arsenal to push further away from the dreaded relegation spots.

Warwickshire back Paul Stirling-Alex Davies partnership to take them to Finals Day

Ireland international signs as Bears’ second overseas player for majority of group stages

Warwickshire hope that Paul Stirling will be a “transformational signing” for their T20 Blast ambitions, as he joins the club for the majority of the group stage to form a new-look opening partnership with Alex Davies. The Bears were beaten in the quarter-finals by eventual champions Kent last season, but lacked a reliable source of runs at the top of the order. Ed Pollock, explosive on his day but frustratingly inconsistent, has since left for Worcestershire while Adam Hose looks set to slide back into the middle order after a quiet 2021 at the top.Stirling, a sought-after opening batter in T20 leagues around the world, has spent the vast majority of his county career at Middlesex, though also played for Northamptonshire in 2020 after Ireland’s rise to full-member status forced him to register as an overseas player, rather than a local.”I’m incredibly excited to join up with the Bears for this year’s Vitality Blast,” Stirling said. “They were the masters of the red-ball game last year but also have big ambitions in white-ball cricket and want to be playing at home on Finals Day. It’s going to be a special few weeks and I can’t wait to get started.”Related

He is due to play the first 12 group games before joining up with Ireland for their two T20 internationals against India at the end of June, and Warwickshire are hopeful he could be available for Finals Day on July 16 – the day after an Ireland ODI against New Zealand in Dublin – if they Bears reach that stage.Paul Farbrace, Warwickshire’s director of cricket, said that Stirling would open alongside Davies, his team-mate at Southern Brave during their title win in the Hundred last year. That would leave Hose, Chris Benjamin, Sam Hain, Will Rhodes and new captain Carlos Brathwaite in the Bears’ middle order, with recent England Under-19 internationals Dan Mousely and Jacob Bethell in reserve.”Paul could be a transformational signing for us in this year’s Blast,” Farbrace said. “He is one of the most powerful openers in the T20 game and has lots of experience on the biggest stage, having played in World Cups and global franchise tournaments.”With a new look opening pair of Paul and Alex Davies in this year’s Blast, it’s an incredibly exciting line-up that Carlos Brathwaite is going to be captaining when we take to the field at Edgbaston for our opening game against the Steelbacks on May 26.”Stirling was player of the match in the Hundred final last season, but is not expected to be picked up in this year’s competition due to a clash with Ireland’s series against South Africa and Afghanistan.

"Sensational" Arsenal player’s adviser is pushing for him to go in January

A “sensational” Arsenal player close adviser is apparently pushing for him to leave the club in January, with the winter transfer window soon upon us, as reports begin to heat up surrounding both potential incomings and outgoings at the Emirates.

Players who are most likely to leave Arsenal in January

Despite Mikel Arterta being forced to deal with a host of injury problems so far this campaign, which has already threatened to extinguish their bid to win a first Premier League title in 21 years, there are suggestions that first-team squad members could depart north London as early as next month.

Arsenal hold talks with £58m striker via reps as January deal possible

Left-back Kieran Tierney, after recovering from a hamstring injury which kept him sidelined since Euro 2024, has been re-introduced to the first-team squad by Arteta – with the Spaniard confirming that he could hand the former Celtic star for his first senior appearance since the 2023 Community Shield final.

“He is ready, he’s training really well and he’s going to have an opportunity for sure,” said Arteta on playing Tierney.

“The way the team is looking at the moment, he is going to do that for that reason and because he’s earned it. The way he’s behaved, the way he’s been with us because he’s willing to do it and when that happens, you have to give those opportunities to players.”

Tierney has been an unused substitute in all of Arsenal’s last five games in all competitions, first making his way back on to the bench for their 5-1 win away to Sporting Lisbon at the end of last month, but this certainly isn’t an indication he won’t be going anywhere in January.

Reliable journalist Charles Watts stated that Tierney is likely to leave Arsenal when the window reopens, and the plan was always to ease him back into the first team in a bid to attract potential suitors.

Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney.

“He has been included in Arsenal’s Premier League squad for the season so he could play once fit, but I struggle to really see that happening,” said Watts, who also claimed Tierney is not in Arteta’s long-term plans.

“He will hope to get a move in January, probably on loan.”

Meanwhile, despite starting in each of the club’s last three games in all competitions, Poland international Jakub Kiwior continues to be heavily linked with a move back to Italy.

Jakub Kiwior's agent pushing for him to leave Arsenal in January

The 24-year-old has done well to fill in for the injured Gabriel Magalhaes lately, helping to shut out both Man United and AS Monaco alongside William Saliba, but there is a belief among the Italian press that Arsenal are prepared to sell Kiwior outright next month – amid interest from Napoli.

Now, newspaper Il Mattino (via Gooner Talk) has provided another update, and they write that Kiwior’s agent is pushing for him to leave Arsenal in January – with the player’s representative eager to secure a move away for the defender.

Jakub Kiwior for Arsenal

Once Riccardo Calafiori and Oleksandr Zinchenko return to the fold, you can make a case that the former Spezia starlet will once again be confined to Arteta’s bench for the foreseeable, so you can see why those close to Kiwior are in favour of him quitting N5.

However, from Arsenal’s perspective, it would be very risky to let the “sensational talent” leave when injuries have been such a reoccurring theme of their campaign.
