Elgar hopes boards 'give players more safety' during scheduling conflicts

“I hope if there is some sort of clash of events, there are some sort of things put in place between the two bodies of cricket”

Firdose Moonda16-Aug-2022Dean Elgar is hopeful that clashes between T20 leagues and Test cricket will be minimised and better managed to avoid a repeat of the situation South Africa had in March-April when six Test regulars chose to go to the IPL instead of playing in the two-match series against Bangladesh. At the time, CSA gave the players the choice to stay with the national side or otherwise, which Elgar initially called a test of loyalty that may determine their future selections in the Test side. A few weeks later, when the players chose the IPL, Elgar’s stance had softened and he said they were put in a “bit of a situation,” which the team understood.Related

Now, in the first Tests South Africa are playing since the Bangladesh series, all six players (Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen and Marco Jansen), are back in the squad and Elgar has accepted them with open arms. “We were aware of the situation those players were put in. It was a very unfortunate situation that they had to go through and I don’t blame them for the decision they made. There was no air to be cleared,” Elgar said.He is certain that all six players have been and will continue to be committed to South African cricket. “We’re pretty sure they want to be here.”, Elgar said. “I am pretty sure if you go back then, they would have loved to have been playing Test cricket for South Africa. They were put in a corner and they had to make a decision and as a group they made a decision. It wasn’t an individual decision, it was a group decision which I am totally happy about because I sat in more meetings than anyone. I am very happy to have them back.”I didn’t have my potential best XI around at that time but we gave a lot of guys exposure to Test cricket and it was also an exercise we wanted to try and do knowing there might be a clash – to give the young guys opportunity and expose them to this level. But now, it’s good to have them back and they are more than welcome in the changeroom.”Khaya Zondo, Ryan Rickelton, and Lizaad Wiliams, who made their debuts during the South Africa series are in the squad for the England tour•Lee Warren/Gallo Images

South Africa gave debuts to three players – Ryan Rickelton, Lizaad Williams and Khaya Zondo (as a Covid-19 substitute) in the Bangladesh series and both Rickelton and Zondo are on this tour. They also welcomed back offspinner Simon Harmer, who had been unavailable for South Africa on a Kolpak deal, but returned to share the wicket-taking load with Keshav Maharaj and provide a second, specialist spin option. Whether South Africa would have to be as generous with new caps and comebacks if the opposition was higher-ranked is unknown but they made-do in the Bangladesh series and won it 2-nil and Elgar hopes the situation won’t be repeated.”I hope if there is some sort of clash of events, there are some sort of things put in place between the two bodies of cricket. I would like to think there is something more concrete put around that just to give players more safety,” he said, alluding to the financial rewards for players in T20 leagues. A South African player, who earns in South African Rands, will earn many times more than their annual salary in one IPL season, not least because those amounts are paid in US Dollars.Elgar’s wish may well come true and clashes are likely to be avoided. In a draft copy of the men’s FTP, seen by ESPNcricinfo and expected to be officially released by the ICC tomorrow, South Africa have no international fixtures scheduled from mid-March to the end of May from 2023 onwards. They do have sometimes have Tests in January and early February (2024 in New Zealand and 2027 against England at home) when their own T20 league will be played but ESPNcricinfo understands that if any of the red-ball squad members are playing in the new league, they will be released to the Test squad for those matches.

'I'll try to repeat what I did last year' – Shams Mulani looks to continue rapid rise

Mumbai allrounder was top wicket-taker in Ranji Trophy last season, apart from winning the Under-25 CK Nayudu Trophy

Allrounder Shams Mulani had a bumper 2021-22 domestic season, starring with both ball and bat. Top wicket-taker in the Ranji Trophy: check. Five half-centuries in nine innings: check. Winning the Under-25 CK Nayudu Trophy for Mumbai: check. In the 2022-23 season-opening Duleep Trophy, Mulani threatened to tick off another landmark – a maiden first-class hundred – but fell agonisingly short by three runs when he spliced a return catch to Bishworjit Konthoujam on the fourth afternoon in Chennai. But he isn’t resting on his laurels, and hopes to reprise his all-round efforts from last season.”I would’ve been happier if I would’ve gotten a hundred,” Mulani said after his team West Zone drew with North East Zone. “But it’s a learning process for me as well – as to how to play when you’re in the nineties – and this game was a good practice game for us because obviously they had a good bowling attack.Related

“And just because the wicket wasn’t helping much doesn’t mean they didn’t bowl well. The batters came in and said: ‘They were on the money and they were bowling well’. Going into the season, it’s a good start, and hopefully this continues – the good form I have with bat and ball. I’ll try to repeat what I did last year.”Mulani wheeled away for 26 overs with the ball but managed only one wicket on an atypical Chepauk track that didn’t provide any assistance to spin. Mulani’s latest outing with the ball amid scorching heat was a bit of a throwback to his gut-busting 48-over shift against Tamil Nadu at the same venue in January 2020.After contributing 87 with the bat, Mulani had toiled away with the ball at the time, taking four wickets – including that of R Ashwin for 79. With a full-fledged home-and-away Ranji season now coming up, he is prepared to bowl similarly long spells and do the job for his team.File photo: Shams Mulani fell for 97 in the Duleep Trophy opener this season•K Sivaraman

“Last season was phenomenal for me. But that’s in the past now, and I want to take a fresh start because the wickets are going to be different and I need to bowl on tough tracks where the ball isn’t spinning that much and not doing much,” Mulani said.”I need to chip in with the wickets [on those pitches] as well. Yes, last season was very good for me and everyone was saying, ‘Wow, well done!’, but I’m not looking forward to the new season [in terms of wickets only]. Going forward, I’m working on my bowling – on how to bowl long spells with the same amount of revolutions. Let’s see if that comes off.”Bowling with the Kookaburra ball made life difficult for bowlers in the first round of the Duleep Trophy – both in Chennai and Puducherry. The ball seamed around sharply in the early exchanges, but got softer soon after and favoured the batters. Mulani, who was operating with the Kookaburra ball for the first time, conceded that he found it tough to grip the ball.”I think it’s my first time playing with the Kookaburra ball, and I had a similar experience to what he [North-East spinner Ankur Malik] had,” Mulani said. “After 20-25 overs, the seam goes away – it’s not like the SG ball – and there was not much help from the wicket. It’s quite difficult to grip as well and try to bowl in good areas with good amount of revolutions.”I think we need to get used to it, going into the semi-finals and final. It was a good learning process of how I need to bowl and at what pace I need to bowl with the Kookaburra ball because it’s a bit different.”Mulani has also had some exposure outside of Mumbai’s cricketing circles. Last year, he had captained Mumbai on a white-ball tour of Oman, and had emerged as the team’s second-highest wicket-taker there with nine strikes in seven matches at an excellent economy rate of 4.78.More recently, ahead of the Indian domestic season, Mulani was part of the Mumbai Indians contingent – which also included the likes of Dewald Brevis and Tilak Varma – for their UK tour.”Oh, it was amazing,” Mulani said of his experience with the IPL franchise. “Different conditions, different wickets that offered more bounce. I needed to get used to what length I needed to bowl on that track. It was a very good experience, and we enjoyed it a lot.”West Zone will next play Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy semi-final in Coimbatore, which also recently hosted the 20-overs Tamil Nadu Premier League final in July.

BOM INÍCIO DO GRÊMIO

European giants now make contact to sign £8k-p/w Rangers ace Clement loves

Rangers have been dealt a blow as it has now emerged that a member of Europe’s elite have now made contact to sign a member of Philippe Clement’s squad as they look to bolster their own ranks in the coming months.

Rangers improving too late

Rangers have seen an upturn in form recently, but remain well off the pace in the hunt for the Scottish Premiership title. Though they beat Celtic 3-0 in the last meeting between the two sides, they remain 10 points behind Brendan Rodgers’ side, who also boast a game in hand on their rivals.

Rangers’ next five SPL fixtures

Hearts (Away)

St Mirren (Home)

Kilmarnock (Away)

Motherwell (Home)

Well clear of anyone else and sitting in second place, it is threatening to be another trophyless season for Clement’s side. Meanwhile, a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in the Europa League has left Rangers’ chances of automatic qualification into the next round of the competition hanging by a thread.

Big Dessers upgrade: Rangers eye up move for "extremely talented" striker

Rangers are seeking to add more firepower this month, so could they sign an out-of-favour Premier League striker who would be Cyriel Dessers upgrade?

ByBen Gray Jan 28, 2025

Instead, they will need to get a result against Belgian side Union Saint Gilloise to ensure that they make it into a qualification spot for the knockout rounds despite having what many would deem a strong campaign in Europe’s secondary competition.

While the breakthrough of Hamza Igamane has been a joy for Rangers fans, it has otherwise been a tricky season to date and there are still reservations over whether Clement is the right man to take them forwards in the long term.

Rangers rocked by Chelsea's Jefte interest

Now, a fresh report has claimed that Chelsea are now plotting a potential summer move to sign exciting fullback Jefte, and have already contacted his representatives over a Stamford Bridge switch.

The Brazilian has been one of the club’s standout performances so far this season, impressing plenty at Ibrox since his arrival from Brazilian side Fluminense in the summer.

Jefte

Still just 21-years-old, he has caught the attention of clubs around Europe and as per the report, Chelsea “have made initial contact with Jefte’s representatives” as they look to find an understudy for Marc Cucurella in west London.

It is added that there is also “other interest from a handful of clubs on the continent” in what could turn into a scramble for the signature of the Rangers youngster, who is believed to have penned an £8,000 a week deal at Ibrox until 2028.

Clement is understandably a big fan of Jefte, dubbing him “very talented” months after his arrival at Ibrox, but that talent may well see him depart Scotland sooner than most Rangers fans would like.

He is not the only Rangers man in the spotlight either, with teammate Igamane attracting Premier League interest too in the form of Tottenham and Everton. With that in mind, it could prove challenging for Clement and co. to hold onto their star men this summer.

Jô fez 19 jogos nesta temporada e marcou quatro gols. Essa não é primeira polêmica na temporada. Em março, o atacante faltou em dois treinos na época do seu aniversário e foi multado pela diretoria.

19-year-old set for Chelsea first team after Moises Caicedo comparison

Chelsea are set to include a new teenager in Enzo Maresca’s first team squad, with the player even drawing comparisons to Moises Caicedo.

Fresh off the back of an important win over West Ham in the Premier League on deadline day, Maresca’s side travel to Brighton and take on Fabian Hurzeler’s side in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday evening.

Chelsea held "a lot" of January talks to sign star who'll "become an idol"

This news comes from a club’s former president.

Having crashed out of the Carabao Cup to Newcastle United, whilst sitting 13 points behind league leaders Liverpool, the FA Cup represents Maresca’s golden opportunity to win a domestic trophy and their first since 2018.

After a tough start to life at Stamford Bridge, club-record signing Caicedo has become a pivotal player for Chelsea, and he’ll undoubtedly play another important role against his former club this weekend.

“I knew him at Brighton as well, as we were team-mates there,” said left-back Marc Cucurella on Caicedo’s importance.

“He is very important, he is very relaxed. He shows everything on the pitch, he’s very hard-working and he’s a very important piece for us. I think he’s one of the main talents of the team, and he shows every game what he can give to us. We’re really happy for him and I’m really happy because I know his first games here were tough as well, but he worked really hard and now he deserves all these moments.”

The Ecuadorian has started all 24 of Chelsea’s Premier League matches this season, earning mainstay status and standing out as the club’s third-best performer overall according to WhoScored.

Moises Caicedo celebrates for Chelsea

He also averages more tackles per 90 than any other Chelsea player (WhoScored), which highlights his crucial role breaking up play in Maresca’s midfield.

Luckily for the Blues, Chelsea have sealed the signing of Mathis Amougou in a £12 million deadline day deal from Saint-Étienne, and the 19-year-old has drawn comparisons to Maresca’s star man.

Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, an expert on world football’s brightest young talents, called Amougou “similar” to Caicedo – with the teenager possessing great passing ability, mobility, ball carrying, tackling, work rate, athleticism and bravery.

Mathis Amougou set for Chelsea first-team role under Maresca

There were suggestions that the midfielder was set for Strasbourg, and he’s more a signing for the future.

However, reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano says that Amougou will be heading straight into Chelsea’s first-team fold – sharing the exact plan for him from now until the end of the season and onwars.

In the meantime, before his loan back to Ligue 1 in the summer, Maresca will be hoping that the France Under-19 international can indeed come as a young, exciting alternative to Caicedo in the engine room.

PCB concerned over growing Indian investment in overseas T20 leagues

Pakistan board worried this could leave their players locked out of opportunities; in preliminary talks with other boards over reciprocal NOCs

The PCB is concerned that the growth of Indian investment in franchise T20 leagues could leave their players locked out of opportunities to develop overseas. The auction for the inaugural SA20 – in which all six teams were bought by IPL franchise owners – was held last week and did not feature a single Pakistani player. In the UAE’s new ILT20, five of the six teams are Indian-owned and the only Pakistani player involved, Azam Khan, has been signed by the American-owned Desert Vipers.Pakistan’s players are not officially barred from representing those teams and there is understood to have been engagement between the SA20 and PCB over Pakistan players. But Future Tours Programme commitments – Pakistan are due to play home series against New Zealand and West Indies in early 2023 – means the involvement of leading internationals this season would have been limited or impossible regardless. The SA20 does hope, however, to have Pakistani players participate in the future.Related

However, the recent surge in the number of franchises worldwide owned by Indian investors has prompted Ramiz Raja, the PCB’s chair, to share his concerns with his counterparts about the prospect of Pakistan players being denied the chance to play around the world. There have also been preliminary talks with other boards to discuss the possibility of reciprocal arrangements regarding No-Objection Certificates (NOCs), which could see other boards release their players to appear in the PSL in exchange for the PCB granting NOCs to play in other leagues. Two Pakistani players have represented a franchise with Indian ownership in the recent past: Azam is playing for Barbados Royals (owned by Rajasthan Royals’ Manoj Badale) in the ongoing CPL, while Fatima Sana represented their women’s team earlier this year. Others, including Yasir Shah, Shadab Khan and Mohammad Hasnain, have previously turned out for Trinbago Knight Riders, owned by the Red Chillies Entertainment consortium, which also owns Kolkata Knight Riders. But Pakistan’s players have not been involved in the IPL after the inaugural season in 2008 and there is no prospect of that changing in the near future despite the positive relationship shared between Ramiz and Sourav Ganguly, the BCCI’s president. A change in stance would likely require a significant geopolitical shift.”I feel for them,” Moeen Ali, England’s captain said. “They’re probably missing out financially on a lot of money because they’re such good players. It’s obviously political and all that sort of stuff – it’s not black and white, a lot of the time. It’s sad because they’re such good players and they’d only add to the standard of cricket.”The emergence of the SA20 and the ILT20 could also have a significant impact on the PSL. While the leagues do not clash directly with the PSL, player salaries are substantial – particularly in the UAE, where leading overseas players stand to earn up to USD $450,000.The depreciation of the Pakistan rupee against the US dollar is another major challenge for the PSL since overseas players’ salaries are paid in dollars. As a result, players earning the same salary in 2022 and 2023 could end up costing the league significantly more money in real terms. While the PCB is optimistic that a number of leading overseas players will still be involved in the PSL next year, they are seen as the “garnish” that will be added to a thriving pool of local talent: Pakistan do not play international cricket during the PSL’s March window so their leading players are fully available.
