Little chance of conservatism from England as Pakistan search for bowling balance

It remains to be seen what happens to England’s all-guns-blazing approach if Multan serves up a turner

Alan Gardner08-Dec-2022Big PictureHarder, faster, better, stronger. England have taken the Daft Punk approach to reviving their Test fortunes, not to mention reshaping the format as a whole. But how can you raise the bar after scoring close to 1000 runs at well above a run a ball, then crowbarring out the 20th wicket to secure one of the most-remarkable – and hardest-earned – victories in Test history amid the lengthening shadows of the final session on day five?Ben Stokes, England’s captain/nutty-professor-in-chief, has a few ideas on that front, but will be content for more of the same in Multan. England may be 1-0 up in the series, in a country where they have only ever won twice before, but there is little chance of conservatism creeping in – with allrounder Liam Livingstone invalided out of the rest of the series, Stokes and Brendon McCullum have opted to bring in a fast bowler, Mark Wood, to add to their cutting edge.McCullum flagged at the start of the tour that his team would be chasing results, even that meant hustling themselves to defeat in the process. It helps that England’s World Test Championship hopes were dead on arrival; and there is no better way to win a three-match series than to go 2-0 up after two.Related

Stokes embraces the 'why not?' as England look to press harder still

Why does Ramiz think Pakistan have a problem with their pitches?

But Babar Azam might be grateful to know that, like an undead horde, this England will just keep coming. Not because he enjoys the stress headaches brought on by having to set fields when England’s batters are on the charge, but because that very impulsiveness might result in a slip-up that lets Pakistan back into the contest – particularly if the pitches to come are anywhere near as uncooperative as Rawalpindi.Pakistan might need to discover a new spirit of adventure themselves, but they could start with selection and then go from there. The batters acquitted themselves well enough in the first Test, with hundreds for the captain and both openers, while the debutant Saud Shakeel top-scored with 76 in their failed run chase. But it is not just hindsight to suggest that an attack featuring three debutants and 19-year-old Naseem Shah as its most-experienced head was always going to struggle in the face of England’s onslaught. The early suggestions from on the ground in Multan are that, as Babar requested for the first Test, spin may play a greater role. More life in the surface should improve the contest, potentially dulling the edge on England’s strokeplay – India took that route to flex their strength in home conditions during the 2020-21 tour – although the Bazball response to playing on a Bunsen would be fascinating.Pakistan also need to push that bit harder for results across four home Tests against England and New Zealand, if they are to keep their own WTC final hopes alive. Once the morning fog clears in Multan, it’ll be time to put the pedal to the metal once again. Go harder, or go home.Form guidePakistan LLWLD (last five Tests, most recent first)
England WWWLWIn the spotlightAn unexpected debut, confirmed only a couple of minutes before the toss, meant Will Jacks was able to slip into his Test whites somewhat under the radar. But after stepping up in the wake of Livingstone jarring his knee to bowl 40.3 overs – more than he had ever previously delivered in a first-class innings – on the way to figures of 6 for 161, Jacks is likely to be the focus of some extra attention. His ability to score attacking hundreds while giving his offspin a rip has already earned comparisons with Moeen Ali, and his performance in Rawalpindi is only likely to have raised such expectations. The challenge is to keep meeting them.Abdullah Shafique has had a stunning start to his Test career. First capped just over a year ago – having only played two first-class games – he now averages 65.84 from eight Tests, his 114 at Rawalpindi the seventh time he has passed 50 in 15 innings. If he can add another 144 runs over the course of England’s visit, he will become the fastest Pakistan batter to 1000 in Tests. Opening the batting in Pakistan seems a good gig right now, but after England succeeded with their unorthodox new-ball policy in the second innings, bouncing him out for 6, they will be hoping to put a check on his stellar progress.Team newsWhat will the Acme Pakistan Selection Generator come up with this week? They opted not to add an experienced seamer, in the mould of Hasan Ali or Mohammad Abbas, to their 17-man squad after the injury to Haris Rauf, but could still make as many as four changes to the attack. Naseem is a significant doubt due to a sore shoulder sustained during the Rawalpindi Test. Mohammad Nawaz seems likely to return as a spin-bowling option who can add depth to the batting, allrounder Faheem Ashraf may also be picked and Mohammad Wasim Jnr and Abrar Ahmed could potentially be Pakistan’s fifth and sixth debutants for the series.Pakistan (possible): 1 Imam-ul-Haq, 2 Abdullah Shafique, 3 Azhar Ali, 4 Babar Azam (capt), 5 Saud Shakeel, 6 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 7 Agha Salman/Faheem Ashraf, 8 Mohammad Nawaz, 9 Naseem Shah/Mohammad Wasim Jnr, 10 Mohammad Ali, 11 Abrar Ahmed/Zahid MahmoodStokes confirmed just one change to the England XI, which means barring another late bout of illness striking the camp Ollie Pope will keep the gloves ahead of a fit-again Ben Foakes, with Wood coming in for the injured Livingstone.England: 1 Zak Crawley, 2 Ben Duckett, 3 Ollie Pope (wk), 4 Joe Root, 5 Harry Brook, 6 Ben Stokes (capt), 7 Will Jacks, 8 Ollie Robinson, 9 Jack Leach, 10 Mark Wood, 11 James AndersonThe Multan outfield gets a make up amidst some morning fog•Getty Images

Pitch and conditionsThere have only been seven first-class matches played in Multan since 2018, with five ending in draws, and the stats suggest it is the most batting-friendly ground in use for this series. Mohammad Yousuf, Pakistan’s batting coach who averaged 86.16 from four Test appearances in Multan during the 2000s, reportedly travelled up before the end of the Pindi Test to speak to the curator – whether or not that results in a turning surface more to the hosts’ liking remains to be seen. Air pollution could also be a factor, with the potential for morning smog to further squeeze the playing hours.Stats and trivia Multan has not hosted a Test since 2006, when Pakistan and West Indies played out a high-scoring draw. The year before, England were the visitors as Pakistan clinched a 22-run win on the final day – Marcus Trescothick, England’s batting coach on this tour, scoring 193 in vain. England’s 657 in Rawalpindi was the second-highest total recorded by a visiting team in Pakistan – behind the 675 for 5 declared made by India at the Multan Cricket Stadium in 2004. Pakistan have only once managed to come from 1-0 down to win a Test series of three matches or more, against Zimbabwe in 1994-95. Jack Leach needs two more wickets for 100 in Tests.Quotes”We have staged comebacks in the past and were confident of doing so again. But we made mistakes in Pindi that we need to cut down on.”
“Whether we bat or bowl first we’ll still be implementing the same style of cricket. If we bat first we’ll try and press the run rate and move the game forward as fast as we can. And if we bowl first, I don’t think you’ll see too much difference to how we approached [Rawalpindi] with the ball.”

Conquistamos a Libertadores, a Recopa, o Paulista.

Big Merino upgrade: Arsenal plot £101m offer for "the best 9 in the world"

He might have scored a goal in the Champions League last week, but it seems fair to say that starting Mikel Merino up top has not worked for Arsenal.

The Spanish midfielder saved the day against Leicester City last month, and while he’s done certain parts of the job well, he’s not someone who can be relied on to step into the role amid an injury crisis.

Fortunately, Gabriel Martinelli returned to the team yesterday afternoon and can hopefully start down the middle until the end of the season.

However, with Gabriel Jesus out until next year and Kai Havertz not coming back until preseason at the earliest, Mikel Arteta and Co need to sign a new number nine as soon as possible, and the good news is that recent reports suggest that they may have found the perfect option, a player who’d be a colossal upgrade on Merino.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from Spain, Arsenal have drawn up a list of seven striker targets for the summer, with Lautaro Martínez near the very top.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

In fact, the report claims that there is currently speculation that the North Londoners are planning to make an offer for the Argentine superstar of around €120m, which comes out to £101m.

However, as things stand, it’s unclear if that will be enough to tempt Inter Milan into selling their prized centre-forward, who was their top scorer last season and is second on that list this year.

Lautaro-Martinez

It will almost certainly be a complicated and costly transfer to get over the line this summer, but given Martínez’s immense ability, it is one well worth pursuing, especially as he’d be a massive upgrade on all of Arsenal’s choices, including Merino.

Why Martínez would be a game-changer for Arsenal

Now, while there are several reasons Martínez would be a game-changing signing for Arsenal, from his track record of winning major trophies to his slick, free-flowing style of play, the most important is that he is a reliable scorer of goals and provider of assists.

Inter Milan'sLautaroMartinez applauds their fans

For example, in just 44 appearances for Inter last season, the World Cup winner scored 27 goals and provided three assists, which comes out to a goal involvement every 1.46 games.

In comparison, Jesus produced 16 goal involvements in 36 games, while Havertz hit 21 in 51, equating to a goal involvement every 2.25 and 2.42 games, respectively.

Interestingly, even though the Argentine, who renowned football podcaster Angelo Valdes described as “the best 9 in the world,” has been a little less effective this term, he’s still comfortably ahead, with a tally of 17 goals and six assists in 38 appearances.

In contrast, the Gunners’ Brazilian forward has nine goal involvements in 27 games, and the German has hit 15 goals and five assists in 34 games.

For his part, Merino actually has the best goal involvement-to-game ratio of the lot, as he’s found the back of the net three times and provided one assist in five appearances up top.

However, two of those goals came against Leicester, while the other and his assist arrived in the 7-1 thrashing of PSV Eindhoven.

In the other games, against West Ham United, Nottingham Forest and Manchester United, he looked entirely out of his depth with football.london’s Tom Canton awarding him match ratings of just 5/10 for each encounter.

Ultimately, Arsenal have a number of talented forwards, but none can be described as prolific, and while Arteta couldn’t rely on Merino to step up when he needed him to, Martínez’s incredible trophy haul suggests he very much could be relied upon.

Root's mantra: To be 'consistently useful' within evolving England set-up

His returns have dipped as the McCullum-Stokes partnership has flourished, but he’s finding his niche in the side once more

A score of 57 for someone who has 84 fifty-plus scores – 28 of them hundreds – is small fry in the grand scheme of things. But Joe Root’s knock in England’s second innings of the first Test against New Zealand carried something more. A sense he is starting to fit in under the new regime. That might sound a little like heresy when talking about one of only two Englishman to pass ten thousand Test runs, second only to Sir Alastair Cook by 1,772 on the all-time run-scorer’s list, with time on his side to become No 1. Not to mention the fact that he’s averaging 50.68 since Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes took charge of the Test side at the start of last summer, after Root had stepped down as captain. But the 19 innings so far have been one of rediscovery. While the team has gone from strength to strength, a tenth win in 11 matches coming in Mount Maunganui, Root has lost his sense of equilibrium out in the middle. It began midway through the 2022 season, averaging 11.50 in the home series against South Africa, then just 25 on batting-friendly surfaces in Pakistan.Related

Ben Stokes 'blessed' by England's bowlers after floodlight strategy pays rich dividends

Here's why England are like Mean Girls the movie

It was in Pakistan that his career average dropped below 50 after moving it back to that figure – and beyond – with a stellar 2021. His McCullum-Stokes average is only as high as it is thanks to scores of 115 not out, 176, 86 not out and 142 not out in his first eight innings under their watch. That patch, he explains, came about through liberation from soul-crushing leadership duties.”I think if I’m being brutally honest with all, there was the initial relief of coming out of the captaincy,” Root explained. “Now I’m just trying to find out what my role is within this team.”It sounds silly having the experience I have, but you want to be involved and want to be a part of it. You want to heavily contribute, and I felt like I’ve not been able to do that the last few Test matches.”It’s nice in a small way to have a little bit in that second innings – runs wise and performance wise. I felt like I found a really good tempo in how I wanted to bat. I didn’t feel like I was in fifth gear, I felt like I was playing quite reserved in some respects but still scoring very quickly and I think that’s the beauty of the nature of this team. Because we can bounce off each other and already in a short space of time, some good relationships have been developed in that batting group and it’s leading to some wonderful results.”Tempo is the right word, here. The knock on day three at the Bay Oval came at a strike rate of 91.93, as England looked to take the game into the twilight period when they would get a second crack at New Zealand’s top order. Time rather than runs was the main focus, allowing Root to play his more natural game. Stuart Broad, who removed four of the top order that evening to leave New Zealand 28 for 5 after England eventually set them a target of 394, put it best: “Rooty found that ODI rhythm”.This is not so much a crisis of confidence or identity, but getting swept up in the wave of attacking batsmanship rather than riding it. The strength of the tides over the last nine months has evidently been too great to resist.”I’ve always bounced off the guys at the other end and tried to play what’s right in front of me. In the recent past it’s a case of … the rhythms of the game, I’ve maybe got a bit caught up in it. But I’m not too far away from what’s given me success.”I didn’t feel I tried to force it second innings and when I’m playing well that’s one of my strengths: I can score freely and I can rotate the strike. As soon as there are sweepers out, a deep point, I can drop it and get off strike, keep the scoreboard moving. I’ve not performed for a little while, so I had bit between my teeth second innings and it’s given me a little sharpener, a kick up the backside, that this is how I need to play my cricket. How I can be consistently useful in this group.”Is he overthinking all this? Talk of working out a format he has more or less cracked feels like he is. It does feel like he is workshopping a new sound when the classics still have their pull amid the techno blaring around him.He insists he’s not, and you will have to take that at face value. He has always been a batting purist rather than an obsessive, grooving in the nets until he feels comfortable rather than drained. “I’ve not gone full Matt Fitzpatrick on it,” he countered when asked if this professional introspection has involved any note taking. Fitzpatrick, a 28-year-old English golfer who won the 2022 US Open, has recorded every shot he has taken since the age of 15.And yet, there is a new club in Root’s bag that has become a lightning rod for what is perceived as unnecessary tinkering to a seemingly flawless square-on, high-elbowed approach. The now infamous square-on, reverse lap over the slips first got an airing in 2021 against Mohammed Siraj, but has been brought out regularly over the last year under Stokes where freedom of expression is encouraged.Tim Southee and Neil Wagner were on the receiving end last summer, and he used it during his recent ILT20 stint with Dubai Capitals. It looked in good order during the warm-up match, lifting Jarrod McKay over the fence in Hamilton on his way to a tidy 77.It also worked in the first innings at Mount Maunganui, Wagner again on the receiving end for four which took Root to 13. Alas, six balls later, an attempt to repeat the trick was caught well by Daryl Mitchell at second slip.Speaking to Wisden Cricket Monthly, he explained the rationale behind the “minimal risk” shot as a counter to a bowler operating on “sixth stump to a 7-2 off-side field”. The vacancy down at third man also increased its value, which was presumably the rationale behind the reverse sweep off Michael Bracewell that brought about his dismissal in the second innings. That was arguably much worse than his downfall in the first given it came at the start of the last over before the first break on day three.”Sometimes you get a good ball,” he joked. “In the book it’s caught first slip, isn’t it?””It was calculated: it was to get them to bowl both sides of the wicket, change their plans and in that middle session, force the game. You take calculated risks. I’ve got where I’ve got to by trusting my gut. It just didn’t quite work out: I just sort of middled the edge of it.”So, will he pack it away? No chance.”It’s not going to stop me playing it. Maybe just be smarter about playing it, having played it once, maybe look at my movements … because he bowled it wider. You have to give the bowler credit in some respects. But yeah, it’s now part of my Test game and I’ll continue to utilise it when it’s the right time.”

Worth more than Essugo & Quenda: Chelsea have struck gold on "superb" star

Chelsea have spent a pretty penny in the transfer market since the arrival of Todd Boehly in May 2022, splashing over £1.3b on new additions to bolster the squad.

The American has invested in the first-team whilst also keeping one eye on the future, and spending huge fees on youngsters who can make an impact down the line.

Enzo Maresca has utilised numerous of the additions during his first year in charge, helping the Blues sit in the top four of the Premier League in their hunt for Champions League football.

Chelsea manager EnzoMarescabefore the match

The Italian has achieved a 58% win record in his first year at the helm at Stamford Bridge, a respectable figure given it’s his first time managing in England’s top flight.

However, the 45-year-old will undoubtedly want to catapult the side to a title challenge next season, already wasting no time in targeting players to aid his attempts.

Chelsea’s move to land Essugo & Quenda from Sporting CP

Dario Essugo is currently spending the season on loan at Spanish side Las Palmas from Sporting CP, but it hasn’t stopped Chelsea from making a move for the 20-year-old.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the Blues have agreed an £18.5m deal for the midfielder to join the first team this summer on a seven-year contract.

Benfica's Rafa Silva in action with GD Chaves's DarioEssugo

He’s not the only Sporting player set to move to West London, with wideman Geovany Quenda also set to move in 2026, after the two sides agreed a fee in the region of £40m for his signature.

The 17-year-old has endured a huge rise this campaign, featuring 44 times in Portugal, registering a total of eight combined goals and assists – a phenomenal return given his tender age.

However, despite the pending deals for the two youngsters, the club already have a player who’s worth more than the pair combined, showcasing their excellent dealings in the market.

The Chelsea star worth more than Essugo & Quenda

Over the years, numerous of the Chelsea signings made during the Boehly era have made a real impact in the first team, helping Maresca in his quest for a top-four finish.

Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernández and Moises Caicedo are arguably three of the best additions, with the latter two costing upwards of £100m – showcasing the ambition shown by the owner in recent years.

Striker Nicolas Jackson is another player who’s moved to the club in recent times, costing a fee in the region of £32m from Villarreal in the summer of 2023.

The Senegalese international, who’s currently out injured, has often been the go-to man at the top end of the pitch, cementing his place as the number-one striker for the Blues.

The 23-year-old has registered 26 goals in his 68 appearances for the club, often popping up at key moments with vital goals, leading to journalist Ben Jacobs dubbing him as “superb”.

Nine of his strikes have come during the ongoing season, currently sitting as the Blues’ second top scorer despite not featuring since the start of February.

As a result of his excellent goalscoring form at the Bridge, Jackson is now valued at £64.5m by Football Transfers, a figure higher than that of the combined fees of Essugo and Quenda which totals £58.5m.

Given his form and increased market value over the last couple of years, he’s showcased that he’s been worth every penny of his transfer fee, whilst having the potential to improve further given his tender age.

There will be huge hope in West London that the new signings could follow in the footsteps of Jackson in hitting the ground running at the club, potentially being worth every penny of their big-money fees.

PCB wants four out of 13 Asia Cup matches to be played in Pakistan

The remaining nine matches, including the final, will be played at a neutral venue according to the board’s hybrid model

The PCB’s hybrid model solution to the Asia Cup will see four out of 13 matches being played in Pakistan with the rest – including the final – to be played at a neutral venue, which could be the UAE. Najam Sethi, the board head, told BBC’s podcast that he was still hopeful of the tournament being played in Pakistan, despite two Asian Cricket Council (ACC) members raising objections to a hybrid solution and the more intractable problem of India not being given permission to travel to Pakistan. He also added that if the hybrid model worked during the Asia Cup, it could pave the way for it to be used in the one-day World Cup, to be held later this year in India. Given the fraught and tense relations between India and Pakistan, Sethi said there is a “distinct possibility” that the Pakistan government doesn’t allow Pakistan to travel to India.Sethi held a meeting with ACC officials in Dubai on Tuesday to try and find a solution to the issues, and he believes the PCB has “bent over backwards” to accommodate the various concerns. “The proposal that I submitted three days ago takes care of all this,” he said. “We play four matches in Pakistan, the teams come straight here and then everybody moves to the neutral venue wherever that may be. We play the rest of games there. I made the concession that in the event we get to the final we play the final in a neutral venue, whether against India or anyone else. We’ve bent over backwards to solve all these issues.”Keeping four matches in Pakistan, ESPNcricinfo understands, is to ensure the PCB’s long-term strategy of high-profile international cricket and the hosting of tournaments in Pakistan continues uninterrupted.”My mandate given to me by the government and by the media and by the people of Pakistan is that this has to be an honourable and reciprocal arrangement,” Sethi said. “We are happy to play in the Asia Cup but it can’t be that India refuses to come to Pakistan and then doesn’t allow us to even host few of our matches at a neutral venue. Don’t forget immediately after the Asia Cup, we have the World Cup coming and it’s going to be in India and it’s an ICC event. What happens if India doesn’t come to Pakistan or India torpedoes my hybrid model? I don’t think my government will allow me to go to India to play the World Cup.”The idea of this hybrid solution, and the possibility of the neutral leg being played in the UAE has not gone down well with the boards of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. They have raised logistic and operational objections as well as the heat in the UAE at that time of the year. Sethi insisted that as the host country, it was up to the PCB to decide where the neutral venue should be.”I am quite surprised that this idea is being floated unofficially by Sri Lanka and by Bangladesh,” he said. “In the last ACC meeting, which was about a month ago, we all agreed that it was imperative that Pakistan play the Asia Cup and without Pakistan there will be no Asia Cup. Nearly 80% of the revenues of the Asia Cup are from India-Pakistan matches of which, the way the schedule is structured, we play at least two of those and possibly three if we are both in final. The only objection Bangladesh made was that it’s going to be too hot in September in the UAE and that would be a problem. Then the other issue was logistics. The proposal that I submitted takes care of all logistic problems.”The PCB has also been keen to point out that both the 2018 and 2022 editions of the Asia Cup were played in the UAE in September.According to Sethi, time is running out to make a decision. The board, he said, required three months to prepare. “We need to reserve venues in the UAE or Sri Lanka or wherever we decide. Time has already run out, the ACC has to make a decision. We have made our position clear. I had a meeting with a high level ACC interlocutor two days ago in Dubai. He liked it, he said it is eminently workable. He said he would go back to [BCCI secretary and ACC president] Jay Shah and talk to him.”We need to resolve the first issue [of accepting the hybrid solution] and then we can sit across a table and decide where to play. We will be reasonable. The interolocuter said I have briefed Jay Shah about our meeting, he’s okay with it. He now wants to check with Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. So let’s see where this goes.”As has been the case throughout the protracted negotiations of where this tournament ends up, Sethi raised the spectre of the consequences in case the worst happens with the Asia Cup. “There is a very distinct possibility [of Pakistan not playing in the World Cup] if we do not come to any solutions right now. I raised this issue in the ACC meeting we had in Bahrain and I invited the ICC chairman [Greg Barclay] to come and sit with us and hear what we are talking about.”The idea being that if the hybrid model works here, then we could well make it work in the World Cup. Meaning the Pakistan matches could be held in Bangladesh or the UAE, one hop away and we can sort it out and all other games in India. Why can’t India come to Pakistan and play? If India comes to Pakistan and plays, then we can go there and play and this matter will be resolved.”
