Uncapped Kashvee and Vrinda make biggest splash at WPL auction

Annabel Sutherland was the most expensive overseas player, while Chamari Athapaththu went unsold yet again

The uncapped Indian pair of Kashvee Gautam and Vrinda Dinesh walked away with top honours at the WPL auction in Mumbai, attracting bids of INR 2 crore (Gujarat Giants) and INR 1.3 crore (UP Warriorz) respectively.Australia allrounder Annabel Sutherland was the most expensive overseas player, attracting the auction’s joint-highest bid at INR 2 crore, with Delhi Capitals exhausting 88.8% of their remaining purse of INR 2.25 crore on her.The biggest surprise was Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu missing out for a second time running. The WBBL’s MVP, the second-highest run getter in the tournament, also failed to make it back into the accelerated rounds of the auction, where teams nominated players from the initial unsold list of players.Related

Some other significant exclusions were of Deandra Dottin, the former West Indies captain, and Australia allrounder Kim Garth, who were among only three players in the highest price bracket (INR 50 lakh). Scotland’s Kathryn Bryce was the lone Associate player picked at the auction, by Giants at her base price of INR 10 lakh.Ekta Bisht at INR 60 lakh attracted the highest bid (Royal Challengers Bangalore) among capped India players, while Veda Krishnamurthy (Giants) and S Meghana (RCB) went at base prices (INR 30 lakh) in the final accelerated round of auctions after finding no takers early on. Among the big Indian misses was Devika Vaidya, the allrounder, who was expected to be high on the wish list of teams. She was released by the Warriorz, who had bid INR 1.6 crore for her ahead of the inaugural season. In what was a sharp auction where teams mostly looked to fill gaps, the Giants came in with the biggest purse after offloading more than half their squad. Having released four seam-bowlers – Sutherland, Garth, Mansi Joshi and Monica Patel – they went all out to secure the lanky 20-year-old seam-bowling allrounder Kashvee, who plays for Chandigarh.Giants and RCB began an intense tussle before Warriorz swooped in at INR 75 lakh. They pursued the bid until the Giants pipped them right at the end to sign Kashvee at a record INR 2 crore. For perspective, Kashvee’s bid was higher than the one Harmanpreet Kaur attracted (INR 1.8 crore) at the inaugural auction in February.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

It was no surprise that Kashvee was in high demand, since skilled seam-bowling allrounders are a rarity. Kashvee is a swing bowler who has worked on improving her pace, based on feedback given to her after the inaugural auction in which she was unsold. At the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy last month, she picked up 12 wickets in seven games at an economy rate of 4.14. Since then, she has also gone on to play for India A in the recently-concluded home series against England A. In June, she was part of India’s triumphant Under-23 squad at the ACC Emerging tournament in Hong Kong.Like Kashvee, Vrinda has been on the radar of the selectors and scouts alike. In August, Vrinda trialled with all five franchises. RCB, the franchise from her home state, first raised the paddle before Giants entered the tussle to quickly elevate the bids. But it was Warriorz, who entered the bidding at INR 65 lakh, who stayed the course to finally sign her for INR 1.3 crore.A prolific scorer over the past two seasons, Vrinda has earned plaudits for her ability to blend consistency with robust power-hitting up front. At 22, she has already broken through the ranks of India A, having recently been part of the squad that played three home games against England A.Earlier this year, she played a key role in Karnataka’s run to the final of the Senior Women’s one-day competition. She finished as the tournament’s fifth-highest run-getter, behind Jasia Akter and Priya Punia, with 477 runs in 11 innings at 47.70. This included 81 in the semi-final against Rajasthan.Chamari Athapaththu’s WBBL exploits weren’t enough to earn her a bid at the WPL auction•Getty Images

Australia’s Phoebe Litchfield was the first player up for grabs and was signed by Giants for INR 1 crore. The left-hander, who first broke through as a social media sensational as a 16-year-old in 2019, has had a dream run lately, finishing the WBBL as its third-highest run-getter. She began her international career in India last year, during the T20I series, and made the move up quickly. She kept Grace Harris out of the Australia side earlier this season and was used in the middle order, from where she struck a record-equalling 18-ball fifty against West Indies. Earlier this year, she was handed Test and ODI caps. Also among those who got onto the WPL bandwagon after finding no takers in the inaugural season were the England duo of Danni Wyatt (Warriorz) and Kate Cross (RCB). South Africa quick Shabnim Ismail went to the Mumbai Indians for INR 1.2 crore. The second WPL season is set to be played in February 2024. The first season was played across three venues in Mumbai owing to logistical considerations. The BCCI hasn’t yet made a decision on the venues for the second edition, although Mumbai and Bengaluru are believed to be in the running to host matches.

'Things have happened quite quickly' – Ravindra is living his dream, and loving it

After his heroics at the ODI World Cup, he is “really excited to see how my [Test] game has evolved” while in Bangladesh

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Nov-20231:38

Ravindra: Looking to do it ‘my way’ as a spinner in Bangladesh

“Pretty surreal,” Rachin Ravindra says, summing up his two years in international cricket, which was capped by a special ODI World Cup in India, where he scored 543 runs, with three centuries and two half-centuries.”Things have happened quite quickly, and I am very fortunate to be here right now,” he said in Sylhet, where New Zealand are getting ready for a two-Test series against Bangladesh before heading back home where they will again play Bangladesh, though in a short-format series.”At my age, being able to travel around the world playing cricket, playing a game you love, for a living is pretty special. [It] definitely has its ups and downs, but mostly I love every single moment,” Ravindra, just past his 24th birthday, said. “Look, I think it’s a testament to the team environment: to be able to come in and play with freedom, and enjoy my time learning from those guys who have been here for so long. It’s been great to rub shoulders with everyone, and hopefully I can keep learning from them.”Related

Ravindra comes of age with an innings for the dreamers

And transitioning from white-ball cricket to red-ball cricket is not a big deal. In fact, it’s something Ravindra said he looked forward to.”I enjoy going back to red-ball cricket after that (ODIs) because that means your intent… you are almost looking to score, so, I mean, [it] keeps you in a good position to score,” he said. “But probably here [in Bangladesh] it depends on the conditions, what the pitch is doing, it’s probably going to dial that back a little bit, not as many risks. You can still play your natural game, by understanding the surface and the situation of the game dictates you.”I think we sometimes don’t understand how long a Test match really is – you have five days of 90 overs each day, so there’s a lot of time here, so hopefully we can bring that calmness in the group from the one-dayers to the red-ball stuff.”It has just been three Tests for Ravindra so far. Two in his debut series, in India in late 2021, and one against Bangladesh in Mount Maunganui early last year, which ended in a famous Bangladesh win. Ravindra’s numbers aren’t special in the format: just 73 runs from six innings.”I really loved my first experience of Test cricket a couple of years ago, and [I am] really excited to see how my game has evolved,” he said.Come Tuesday, in the first Test against Bangladesh on their own soil, Ravindra, if he plays, could bat much lower than the No. 3 position he took at the ODI World Cup. It will be different for sure.”It obviously depends. You’ve got a little transition period, and you probably don’t have as much time to get yourself in; but also it’s Test cricket, so you actually do have a lot of time,” he said. “It’s a different role for sure; it’s not a new ball – I might come in and straightaway face a spinner.”So [it’s] just [about] wrapping your head around that and seeing what sort of way you can adjust your game plan and get used to facing slower bowling instead of seam up top. But the beauty of it [is that] you contribute whatever way you can for the team no matter what role it is, and hopefully you contribute to a win.”Ravindra the bowler ‘trying to do it my way’Ravindra’s batting gives him an edge in terms of selection in the XI, but there’s a lot of quality in New Zealand’s spin-heavy squad in Bangladesh: Ajaz Patel, Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner (another allrounder, though primarily a bowler) are the specialists, and apart from Ravindra, there’s also Glenn Phillips, a batter with a knack of picking up crucial wickets with his offspin.Sylhet, the venue of the first Test against Bangladesh, is known to be a bit more seamer-friendly than, say, Dhaka, but spinners should have a big role to play there too. The second Test will be played in Dhaka. So Ravindra, and the other New Zealand spinners, should be in the game. So Ravindra wants to learn as much as he can, especially from Ajaz and Sodhi; but for him, it’s about “trying to understand what they do well but still trying to do it my way”.”Those wickets back in 2021 [when New Zealand played five T20Is in Dhaka] were very interesting, I guess,” he said with a laugh. “It was quite difficult to bat on, but it was good fun to bowl on.”Rachin Ravindra had an economy rate of 5.98 during the World Cup, where he picked 2 for 21 against Sri Lanka•AFP/Getty Images

His takeaways from that trip? “Bowl with a quicker pace rather than what we are probably accustomed to bowling back home; if you are putting it in the area and dialling up the pace a little bit more, hopefully have a little bit of success.”On that T20I tour, Ravindra scored 47 runs in five innings, including two ducks, and picked up six wickets, including a three-for, even as New Zealand lost 3-2.Despite being a batting allrounder, Ravindra’s ability to bowl left-arm spin could see him given more responsibility with the ball than he might get elsewhere. At the World Cup, he was more than useful, not always picking up a lot of wickets – though the 2 for 21 vs Sri Lanka was quite cool – but more than pulling his weight as one of the fifth bowlers, returning a tournament economy of 5.98.And like on the tour of Pakistan in April-May this year, New Zealand will have the services of Saqlain Mushtaq to fall back on in Bangladesh too. He has been working with the spinners in Sylhet, and Ravindra is “really excited” about it, and not just because of the obvious reason.”Really excited to link up with him again, talk a lot about cricket, [and] about life. He imparts some great wisdom, so not just on the field but off the field [too].”

Khawaja, Carey, Cummins rescue Australia from 54 for 5

Alzarri Joseph and Kemar Roach shared seven wickets before the hosts declared their first innings 22 behind

Alex Malcolm26-Jan-20241:57

McGlashan: ‘West Indies have a chance of a famous victory’

Kevin Sinclair made a half-century on debut and celebrated his first wicket with a spectacular somersault. Australia were 24 for 4 with Kemar Roach on a hat-trick. Alzarri Joseph bagged four wickets with hostile pace. Alex Carey made a Gilchrist-esque 38-ball half-century. Pat Cummins passed 50 for the first time in over five years. Usman Khawaja was Usman Khawaja. West Indies were 64 for 5 and made 311. Australia were 54 for 5 and made 289 for 9 before declaring to bowl with a new pink ball under lights after 9pm. Australia’s two best catchers, Cameron Green and Steven Smith, dropped two sitters at either end of the day. Tagenarine Chanderpaul fell in the final over of the day via a review. After a truly bonkers day of Test cricket at the Gabba, West Indies were 35 ahead with nine second-innings wickets intact at stumps. The last time they led Australia after the first innings in a Test was in 2012; Australia had declared behind then as well and won.Cummins’ bold declaration paid off with Chanderpaul caught behind to Josh Hazlewood on what became the last ball of the day – the DRS showed the faintest of edges. It could have been worse for the visitors. Kraigg Brathwaite had nicked Mitchell Starc low to Smith at second slip and he spilled it, after pouching three without issue in the first innings.Equally, West Indies’ lead could have been more. Australia were 24 for 4 at dinner and 54 for 5 not long after, thanks to Roach’s three early blows and Alzarri Joseph picking up two. Those early breakthroughs backed up the great work of Sinclair. His half-century on Test debut helped push West Indies to the second-highest total by any team against Australia in 12 pink-ball Tests.Australia were very nearly 72 for 6 when a 141.7kph delivery from Shamar Joseph whizzed through Carey’s defence and nicked the off bail. But the bail somehow spun in its groove and never fell to the ground.Alzarri Joseph picked up three to derail Australia•Getty Images

Khawaja was resolute throughout, making a superb 75 to hold the innings together, and partnered Carey and Cummins in two crucial stands to bail Australia out of trouble.Carey played a counterattacking innings in the mould of Adam Gilchrist, racing to fifty as he and Khawaja put together 96 off just 99 deliveries. The pink ball softened, and batting became much easier with Australia’s innings almost mirroring West Indies’ first innings. However, unlike the resolute vigil of Joshua Da Silva, Carey’s stay ended before tea when he holed out to deep square leg off Shamar Joseph for 65 off just 49 balls with still plenty of work to do to avoid a significant first-innings deficit. After Starc also fell before tea, Cummins picked up where Carey left off. The skipper was peppered with short balls from the two Josephs. He backed away. He looked ugly. But he found a way to survive and then thrive, carving balls behind point and later launching them through and over the offside. He made his first half-century since December 2018 and finished with 64 not out from 73 balls with eight fours and a six. His innings took Australia from 161 for 7 to 289 for 9, as he shared an 81-run stand with Khawaja and then a 33-ball 47-run partnership with Nathan Lyon before declaring when Lyon fell. Australia’s last four wickets yielded 235 runs and they scored at a dizzying rate of 5.45 throughout.West Indies might rue letting such a position of authority slip. They lost their way to Australia’s lower order and were never able to contain the run rate. It did overshadow the brilliant new-ball work of Roach and Alzarri Joseph.Smith was trapped lbw by Roach in the opening over of Australia’s innings, shuffling back and across too far to a ball that nipped in and hit him flush in front of off stump. Nitin Menon initially gave it not out but it was smashing middle on the ball-tracking projection.Five balls later, Marnus Labuschagne was squared up fending at a lifter from Alzarri Joseph that was well wide of his body, and the thick edge was snaffled by a flying Sinclair at third slip diving to his right.Kevin Sinclair impressed with the bat on Test debut•Getty Images

Green entered and played a lovely off-drive to find the rope, but then meekly chipped an overpitched delivery straight to Brathwaite at mid-off to gift Roach a second. Next ball, Travis Head was strangled down the leg side, tickling a half-volley to Da Silva to squeals of delight from the West Indies team.Mitchell Marsh counterattacked in the same manner as Carey later would. But like Carey, he fell by the sword for 21 off 20, miscuing a pull shot to mid-on having been hurried by Alzarri Joseph.Earlier in the day, Sinclair and Roach frustrated Australia’s bowlers in the morning session, batting through the first hour without loss. Roach was the immovable object while Sinclair did the bulk of the scoring. Australia’s quicks were left frustrated as the second new ball softened quickly and offered very little sideways movement despite Brisbane’s humidity and heavy cloud cover. The partnership was only broken because of a huge mix-up with Roach slipping mid-pitch after Sinclair refused his desire for a single to Labuschagne.Australia could have removed Sinclair on 30. He poked Cummins straight to gully and Green spilled a sitter at thigh height.Sinclair made Green and Australia pay with some excellent shots thereafter. He swept Lyon for four and then lofted him inside-out over mid-off in consecutive balls to bring up his half-century. He fell next ball, running past one that drifted away and was stumped by Carey, who needed two bites to complete the take.

Alan Wilkins, the veteran broadcaster, has been appointed as the new president of Glamorgan on a three-year term.As a left-arm seamer, Wilkins claimed 243 first-class wickets in eight seasons with Glamorgan from 1976 to 1983, and a further 130 in List A games, during which time he helped the club reach their first one-day final, against Middlesex in the Gillette Cup in 1977.After retirement, Wilkins embarked on a broadcasting career, first in South Africa and then as the face and voice of BBC Wales’ sports coverage, primarily of rugby, football and cricket. He now works for Star Sports India.Born in Cardiff, Wilkins said he had come “full circle back to where my cricketing journey began”, as he prepares to succeed Gerard Elias, who is stepping down at the end of a four-year term.”Firstly I am thrilled, and honoured to have been considered for the role of President, knowing who has held the position in the past,” Wilkins said. “I have travelled a lot through my work as a broadcaster, and that journey has brought me home.”I want to make a difference, both on and off the field for Glamorgan,” he added. “We have some fresh faces coming in, myself included. I know our new Head Coach (Grant Bradburn) well from my travels with Pakistan, and I cannot wait to see his brand of cricket out on the hallowed turf of Sophia Gardens.”I honestly feel good things are coming here, I still get goosebumps and butterflies looking out onto that field, and wish I could still play!”Glamorgan CCC Chair, Mark Rhydderch-Roberts, said: “I am delighted that Alan has accepted the Board’s invitation and I know he will add huge value as we move forward into a period of potential change.”Not only will Alan add cricket expertise, gathered from his years of playing and commentating, but he is so well known and respected throughout world cricket that he will be well placed to support the club as we create a new Glamorgan future.”
