Everton's "incredible" star is quietly having a bigger impact than Grealish

On Friday afternoon, Jack Grealish was named the Premier League Player of the Month for August. It remains early days, but Grealish must be rather pleased with his decision to join Everton on loan this summer.

After just three matches of the campaign, two of which have been starts, Grealish has racked up four assists and added a degree of magic to an Everton side that is steeped in David Moyes’ typical industriousness.

Whether the 29-year-old stays on beyond his one-year stay at the Hill Dickinson Stadium remains to be seen, but the Blue fans have already subscribed to the idea, no doubt about it.

Grealish is Everton's hero

Everton suffered defeat in their opening game of the Premier League season, but have since claimed six points from six, and Grealish has provided the playmaking energy to achieve such success.

Don’t expect the attacking midfielder to provide prolific results each and every week, but his dribbling and presence and technical skill make him an incredibly exciting asset, with journalist Henry Winter praising him for “showing his talent and threat”.

The nature of Grealish’s creative role makes clear the fact that he will often take the plaudits. Add to that the embroidements of style and flair that the Three Lions man’s game has been defined by over the years of his career, and you have a player whose every movement will be tracked by a legion of riveted eyes.

However, Moyes and technical director Angus Kinnear have overseen a series of exciting signings this summer, and in Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Everton might have made an even more impressive signing.

How Dewsbury-Hall is outshining Grealish

Dewsbury-Hall left boyhood club Leicester City for Chelsea in 2024, having played an instrumental role in guiding the Foxes back into the Premier League.

The Athletic’s Rob Tanner praised the midfielder for “giving Leicester record-breaking creativity”, and indeed, that has been translated to Everton in spite of a disappointing, peripheral campaign at Chelsea.

Indeed, according to Stats platform Opta, Dewsbury-Hall has created eight chances in the top flight already this term, more than any other English player – Grealish included – and he’s also settled nicely into the more defensive part of Everton’s game in Moyes’ system, winning 60% of his duels thus far.

A complete midfielder, the Merseysiders might just have pulled off a major coup with this one, whose talents could indeed lead him to stand as a quietly more impressive signing than Grealish, even if a permanent option/potentiality is exercised toward the end of the 2025/26 season.

Dewsbury-Hall and Grealish have been praised already this term for their “incredible interplay” by writer Garrett Post, and the more central star’s fluency across the season might be the catalyst for a sustained resurgence on Grealish’s part.

After all, Dewsbury-Hall has made a lightning start to life in a new setting, with such impactful ball-playing qualities that feed into a frontline that was lacking impetus at many points last year.

Whether Moyes manages to maintain Dewsbury-Hall’s level at Everton across the campaign and beyond remains to be seen, but there’s no denying he has played at a ridiculous level across his opening few matches in a Toffees shirt.

Given his all-encompassing nature in midfield, Dewsbury-Hall might even prove to be the hallmark of a transformative summer transfer window, eclipsing even the flashy Grealish.

"Shocker" – £170k-p/w Tottenham star left furious despite win at West Ham

A Tottenham Hotspur star was left furious, despite his side picking up a 3-0 victory against West Ham United at the London Stadium.

Spurs back on track after comfortable West Ham victory

Spurs suffered their first Premier League defeat of the Thomas Frank era prior to the international break, with AFC Bournemouth emerging as surprise 1-0 winners at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but they managed to get back on track against West Ham United last time out.

Frank’s side ran out 3-0 winners at the London Stadium, with Pape Matar Sarr, Lucas Bergvall and Micky van de Ven getting on the scoresheet, and the manager was left impressed by his side’s display.

Frank said: “It was a very good win. I thought we performed very well in big spells of the game. The first 15, 20 minutes were even-ish but after that, I think we got more and more hold of the game.

“In the second half, we just kept going and we scored good goals from Pape, a well-drilled corner, the second goal maybe even better, a fantastic ball from Romero to Lucas, really good and we just kept going.”

Club "want to sell" £50m forward to Tottenham, Thomas Frank also keen

Ultimately, the north Londoners emerged as comfortable winners, but there was a controversial moment in the game, with captain Cristian Romero seeing his goal disallowed for an alleged foul on Kyle Walker-Peters in the build-up.

Jamie O’Hara was left fuming with the decision from referee Jarred Gillett, and the former Tottenham man was not the only one, with £170k-a-week star James Maddison also taking to X to lambast the refereeing performance.

VAR under heavy scrutiny after just four games

We are only four games into the new Premier League campaign, but VAR is already under intense scrutiny, with Howard Webb, the chief refereeing officer for the PGMOL, admitting an error was made in disallowing Josh King’s goal for Fulham against Chelsea.

Fortunately for Spurs, they went on to pick up all three points, despite Romero’s goal being disallowed, but the Cottagers weren’t as lucky, with Chelsea ultimately going on to record a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.

As such, it is evident that refereeing standards must improve, and the PGMOL are lucky that Spurs went on to win the game with ease regardless, courtesy of a fantastic second-half performance.

The games are now starting to come thick and fast for Frank’s side, with the Lilywhites set to return to Champions League action against Villarreal on Wednesday night.

Why isn't Russell batting higher for KKR in IPL 2025?

Venkatesh Iyer says a combination of factors determines how early or late Andre Russell walks in to bat for KKR

Deivarayan Muthu10-Apr-20251:51

Did promoting Ramandeep over Russell cost KKR?

Is Andre Russell batting too low for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2025?He hasn’t batted above No. 7 in four innings so far, and against Mumbai Indians (MI), he was demoted to No. 8. He’s faced 20 balls this season and scored 17 runs. When the question was posed to Venkatesh Iyer on the eve of KKR’s game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Chepauk, he said that a number of factors determined Russell’s batting position.Related

“I think from the analytics point of view, entry point is a huge thing,” Venkatesh said. “Once you assess if a certain pitch is going to suit an individual or not, you decide his entry point whether it will be early or give him [just] a few overs.”Obviously, people [outside] would be talking about when he should come and when he should not. But we should not forget that we have Rinku Singh also. We have Ramandeep Singh also. Yes, Dre [Russell] has been doing this for a very long time, but we have got able competition for him as well.”KKR are also big on maintaining left-right combinations. In the season-opener against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Eden Gardens, KKR had Rinku batting at No. 6, ahead of Russell, after Venkatesh had been dismissed in the 13th over. In their most recent game against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Eden Gardens, KKR promoted Ramandeep to No. 5, ahead of both Rinku and Russell, and paired him up with Venkatesh after Ajinkya Rahane had holed out.”When all these players come together in a combination, it is very difficult for opposition to bowl at them,” Venkatesh said. “And there are a lot of grounds where we also have to consider maintaining a left-right combination. So, there are a lot of things that delay or alter a certain batter’s entry positions, but trust me, everything within the team is well thought of. We have 600 matches of experience in DJ Bravo [KKR mentor]. So, we have a lot of experience and every decision that they make is well thought of.”When Bravo was with CSK as their bowling coach during IPL 2023 and 2024, he played a vital role behind the scenes in the development of Indian fast bowlers like Tushar Deshpande and Simarjeet Singh. Venkatesh and KKR are looking to tap into his experience and knowledge of the Chepauk conditions.”He has played over 600 professional T20 matches, and I’ve said this in many places: nothing is more important than experience because T20 cricket is a game of experience,” Venkatesh said. “The more experience you have, the more situations you have seen. So, he has an answer for every situation because he himself has lived in that situation. Plus, he has spent a lot of time at CSK. He knows how to bat and bowl on this ground, and he knows what tactics to use.”The presence of Varun Chakravarthy, whose domestic home ground is Chepauk, and Moeen Ali and Rahane, also former CSK boys in KKR’s ranks, has also made them feel at home, away from home. If the conditions are conductive to spin, Moeen could return to the team in place of left-arm quick Spencer Johnson on Friday.0:50

Bishop: Russell needs to be bowling for KKR

“Irrespective of the conditions, I think Varun is a world-class spinner now,” Venkatesh said. “But yeah, him playing in his home ground is going to be of huge importance.”It’s going to be a huge factor as well, also considering that Ajinkya played here for two years, Moeen Ali played for two years. So, I think we’ve got a good think tank as well with regards to how this pitch will play.”After starting the season with a pair of low scores, Venkatesh found his groove with scores of 60 off 29 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and 45 off 29 against LSG.”For me, I’m at my best when my mindset for the game is right and, when my approach towards the game is right,” Venkatesh said. “That has got nothing to do with the runs that I scored. Because we are playing one of the best franchise cricket tournaments in the world. If I have certain amount of skill, the other team has the same skill as well. So, for me, the benchmark has always been the mindset that I carry. And I feel I’m carrying a very good mindset towards the game. My approach and attitude towards every game is very good.”

Nottinghamshire go clear at the top as Duckett, Hameed make quick work of Sussex

John Simpson’s fighting 74 couldn’t rescue visitors from early woes as victory sealed in time for FA Cup semi

Division One leaders Nottinghamshire eased to a nine-wicket win inside three days after outplaying Sussex in their Rothesay County Championship clash at Trent Bridge.Needing 148 to win after Sussex were bowled out for 278 in their second innings, Nottinghamshire were home and dry in 25.5 overs after unbeaten half-centuries from skipper Haseeb Hameed (62) and England’s Ben Duckett (59), earning 21 points from their second victory of the campaign.A doughty 74 from Sussex captain John Simpson, backed up by off-spinning all-rounder Jack Carson’s 43, kept the home side in the field until lunchtime, but Nottinghamshire looked as it they were no mood to be still playing at tea, completing the job in good time to watch their neighbours from Nottingham Forest take on Manchester City in their FA Cup semi-final later.Farhan Ahmed, their 17-year-old off-spinner, delivered another stand-out display with the ball, taking four for 54, with Australian seamer Fergus O’Neill signing off with three for 74 in his last match for the county. With an overnight lead of 64, much depended not just on the experience and know-how of Simpson but also on the ability of the three remaining batters to stick with him as Sussex sought to make Nottinghamshire work for their victory. In the event, the 36-year-old left-hander found a doughty and productive ally in his overnight partner, 24-year-old Carson. He and the skipper frustrated the home attack for 96 minutes, extending their partnership to 87 runs before, facing the second new ball, the younger man clipped Brett Hutton straight to midwicket, where sub fielder Freddie McCann had been moved from slip moments earlier.Carson batted for two hours and 18 minutes for his 43, which contained five fours. With an important obstacle removed, the Sussex innings fell away quickly. Ahmed, called into the attack with the new ball only 12 overs old, needed just one delivery with it to have Ollie Robinson caught behind.Left to eke out what he could, Simpson perished in Ahmed’s next over, caught by Josh Tongue in a failed attempt to clear the long-on boundary. The Nottinghamshire target was heading towards the territory that Sussex felt might have been ‘tricky’ in the overcast conditions of Saturday, but Hameed quickly made it look much less daunting as warm sunshine presented the best batting conditions of the match. It did not help Sussex’s cause that Jayden Seales, who played his part in reducing Nottinghamshire from 167 for three to 210 for eight on the second morning, slipped back into his wayward ways of Friday evening, handing Hameed plenty of opportunities to give himself a flying start, which he eagerly snapped up.In his opening two overs from the Stuart Broad End he conceded four boundaries to Hameed, coming back for a third at the Radcliffe Road End to see Ben Slater hammer him for six and four. Little wonder, when Slater pulled him to be caught at deep square leg in his fourth over, he declined to celebrate.Nottinghamshire had polished off 67 of their required runs in 14.2 overs with Slater’s dismissal, which only ushered in Duckett, looking to make amends after falling in single figures in the first innings of one of his nowadays rare appearances in the Championship.Five fours and four sixes – all off the unfortunate Carson – as he raced to a half-century in 23 balls confirmed that impression. Hameed’s 50 from 71 balls, though beautiful to watch, looked pedestrian by comparison. And it was Hameed who hit the winning run with the result wrapped up at 3.27pm.After 21 wickets in four matches, the end of O’Neill’s stint at Trent Bridge will leave a hole in the Nottinghamshire attack, although his replacement, Pakistan’s Mohammad Abbas, arrives in time for their next fixture, against his former county, Hampshire, on May 9.
