Newcastle fans hit back at Janmaat criticism

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Newcastle fans have been giving their verdict on some rather bizarre comments from Daryl Janmaat, as the Dutchman took a swipe at the Toon Army.

Newcastle have found their form in recent weeks, climbing out of the relegation zone after consecutive wins Watford and Bournemouth.

Janmaat didn’t play in that clash at St. James’ Park, but the experienced full back has taken a rather unnecessary swipe at Newcastle fans.

Speaking at the Watford Fans’ Forum, the 29 year-old was asked what it is like to play at Vicarage Road, and he used the question to aim at dig at the Magpies.

“It’s massively different to my former club,” he said.

“Newcastle fans expect too much and can moan quickly.”

Needless to say, Newcastle fans are desperate for their club to match their ambitions, but to say they expect too much is quite a bizarre statement.

The 34-cap Netherlands international has always known how to grab goals from defence, but his vulnerabilities at the back didn’t make him very popular on Tyneside.

The Chalkboard: Celtic already have ideal short-term Benkovic replacement in Lustig

[ad_pod ]

Celtic loanee Filip Benkovic’s formidable centre-back partnership with Dedryck Boyata continued as the Bhoys beat Aberdeen 1-0 in the Scottish League Cup final at Hampden Park on Sunday, and the club will already be worried about losing him at the end of the campaign.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Glasgow giants signed the 21-year-old on a season-long loan deal just weeks after he joined Leicester City from Dinamo Zagreb, and he has made a huge impression at Celtic Park.

Brendan Rodgers may have brought the Croatian to Scotland thinking that Boyata could be on his way out before the summer transfer window slammed shut, but instead they are shining alongside each other after the likes of Jack Hendry and Jozo Simunovic struggled at the beginning of the campaign.

Given he cost around £13m, it firstly appears unlikely that Celtic will be able to afford to buy him next summer, or given his impressive displays that the Foxes would be willing to sell him without making a single appearance for them.

Who can replace him?

Knowing that he is likely to lose Benkovic – and potentially Boyata too if his performances continue and a new contract isn’t signed – Rodgers will surely already be considering his centre-back options.

The Northern Irishman has already hinted that he is open to handing first-choice right-back Mikael Lustig a new deal with his current one due to run out next summer, but the Swede’s display during the Europa League clash against Rosenborg on Thursday suggested he perhaps no longer has the attributes to be a real success in that position – in Europe especially.

However, he has played at the heart of the defence plenty of times during his career and while he might be losing his pace, he has the experience and quality to replace Benkovic – in the short term, at least.

Southampton should try to sign Theo Walcott again following poor Everton form

[ad_pod ]

Everton winger Theo Walcott’s disappointing run of form continued in his side’s last-gasp 2-2 draw with Watford at Goodison Park on Monday night, and Southampton should look to bring him back to St Mary’s less than a year after they lost out on his signature.

What’s the word, then?

Well, then Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino was keen to bring the winger to St Mary’s this time last year to boost his team as they struggled at the wrong end of the Premier League table, but they eventually lost out to the Toffees.

Having narrowly avoided the drop and then started the current campaign poorly under Pellegrino’s successor Mark Hughes, the Welshman was sacked and replaced by new boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, who faces an uphill struggle to keep the south coast outfit in the top flight.

With just 13 goals in 16 league games it is clear to see that they need to add some firepower to their squad in the New Year, and the Everton man could be a great addition.

Why Walcott?

The former Arsenal man is currently struggling for form with one goal in his previous 15 appearances for the Merseyside outfit, but he has remained a regular fixture in Marco Silva’s starting XI because of the quality and experience that he has.

While things may not be going well for him at Goodison Park right now, there is no doubt that he could make a big difference in Hasenhuttl’s preferred 4-2-2-2 system, and the fact that he came through the ranks and made his debut as a 16-year-old for the club should mean there is that extra motivation to keep them in the Premier League.

Saints don’t really have any out-and-out wingers right now aside from Nathan Redmond and potentially Mohamed Elyounoussi, and Walcott would provide some much-needed pace on the counter for the south coast club in their bid for survival.

Southampton Injury News: Nathan Redmond issue could hand Tyreke Johnson first Prem start

[ad_pod ]

Southampton winger Nathan Redmond could be a potential injury doubt for the Premier League clash against Huddersfield Town at the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday after leaving the field during the 3-2 win against Arsenal at St Mary’s last weekend.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Saints attacker was substituted off in the 63rd minute against the Gunners after picking up a knock, and he was pictured holding his hamstring as he left the pitch and went straight down the tunnel.

There has been no confirmation about the extent of the problem yet but he was absent from the training picture gallery on Wednesday, and if it is a hamstring issue then he will surely miss the important top-flight clash against fellow strugglers Huddersfield in Yorkshire on Saturday.

If he is absent, it will be the first Premier League match this season that the 24-year-old has failed to start, with him only missing 44 minutes in total.

Who could replace him if he misses out?

Firstly, it depends on what formation manager Ralph Hasenhuttl intends to play against David Wagner’s men.

The Austrian went with a 5-2-3 system against Arsenal last time out but could choose to line up with four at the back against the Terriers, as he did against Cardiff City in his first match at the helm.

Whichever he chooses he may want an out-and-out wide player rather than someone like Shane Long on the flank, and that would usually open the door for summer signing Mohamed Elyounoussi to come in – although it may not happen after he missed out on the 18-man squad altogether on Sunday despite being available for selection.

Instead, youngster Tyreke Johnson was included ahead of the Norway international and after making his Saints debut in the closing minutes – and with Hasenhuttl also keeping faith with Yan Valery – he could choose to hand the 20-year-old his first Premier League start.

Newcastle fans want Kenedy gone in Janaury

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Newcastle fans have been giving their verdict on one journalist’s surprising suggestion, and it’s not good news for summer signing Kenedy.

Northern football correspondent Simon Bird has suggested a radical January shake-up at Newcastle, a shake-up that would involve sending Kenedy back to Chelsea.

According to his report, the Magpies are in desperation mode now, and he believes it could be time to ditch the underperforming Brazilian.

After a brilliant spell on Tyneside last season, the young winger has managed just one assist so far this campaign, and some of his performances have been downright pathetic.

He put in one of the worst individual displays you will ever see in the draw at Cardiff earlier this season, and Bird thinks his departure could open the door for a more successful loan star, like Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Fans are having their say on the report, and while there are more than a few sticking up for their Brazilian wing wizard, loads are calling for his head, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Swapping Jonjo Shelvey for Tom Cairney would be a smart move for Newcastle

According to The Sun, Fulham boss Claudio Ranieri wants to offer Tom Cairney in a swap deal for Newcastle United playmaker Jonjo Shelvey in the upcoming January transfer window.

What’s the story?

As per the aforementioned report, Cairney has apparently fallen out with the Craven Cottage hierarchy, leaving his future with the Cottagers in doubt. Ranieri is seemingly keen to offload the 27-year-old.

Shelvey himself has issues at St James’ Park, having fallen out of favour somewhat with Rafa Benitez. The Magpies are certainly less reliant upon the 6-cap England international this season, who has struggled to influence many Premier League matches recently.

Check out the video below for Emma Conybeare’s rundown of which clubs need what in the January transfer window…

Despite that, losing Shelvey might seem like a major blow for Newcastle. However, gaining Cairney could well be positive enough to outweigh that loss.

A much-needed boost

For all of his creativity, technical talent and playmaking ability, Shelvey remains something of a liability to Benitez’s side. The 26-year-old is simply not diligent enough defensively, and lacks the consistency and temperament to be relied upon week in, week out.

Though Shelvey is more proven and experienced at Premier League level than Cairney, the arrival of the Fulham man could give the Tyneside club a boost in much-needed areas. The 2-cap Scotland international is a leader and relentlessly hard-working, willing to do his bit defensively for the team. He also operates as a No. 10 – rather than in the deep-lying role Shelvey takes up – which is a position Newcastle could do with fresh blood in.

If Fulham do propose this swap offer, then Newcastle could get the better end of the deal by accepting it.

The Chalkboard: What Steven Davis’ arrival means for his Rangers teammates

According to the Scottish Sun, midfielder Steven Davis is set to leave Premier League outfit Southampton in order to re-sign for Scottish giants Rangers, with an 18-month deal having been agreed.

Steven Gerrard will be looking forward to welcoming the 34-year-old back to Ibrox Stadium but his arrival will give the Gers boss some big selection decisions to make.

On the chalkboard

Rangers are currently enjoying a fine campaign. A precious victory over bitter rivals Celtic last time out – in Gerrard’s first Old Firm clash at Ibrox – put them level on points with the Bhoys at the top of the table.

However, if Rangers are to maintain their title charge and overcome the reigning champions, then they must improve in the second half of the campaign. Gerrard has several issues to address in the January transfer window, but he looks to have made a good start with the signing of Davis, which is nearing completion.

The Saints veteran knows the Scottish club, having represented Rangers for four years, between 2008 and 2012. His experience and leadership will be welcome back at the club, though some of his midfield teammates could be set to see their game time reduced following his return.

Slipping down the pecking order

Following Davis’ arrival, he, Ross McCrorie, Lassana Coulibaly, Ryan Jack and Scott Arfield will all find themselves competing for just three midfield starting berths.

Assuming Davis will be able to force his way into the starting XI, it will likely see him playing alongside Jack and Arfield on a regular basis. On current form, it would surely have to be McCrorie and Coulibaly who miss out.

Whilst this may be a positive upgrade for Rangers, the club’s academy product, McCrorie, and the loanee from Angers, Coulibaly, will be gutted to see themselves slip down the pecking order as a result.

HYS: Should Ole Gunnar Solskjaer start Marcus Rashford or Romelu Lukaku against Spurs?

[ad_pod ]

Since being appointed as interim boss at Old Trafford, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has started Marcus Rashford in all four of his Premier League games against Cardiff, Huddersfield, Bournemouth and Newcastle, and to great effect.

In that time, the 21-year-old has hit three goals as well as recording an assist, having moved into a more central role under the Norwegian.

Contrastingly, Romelu Lukaku missed Solskjaer’s first two games having been granted compassionate leave, and is yet to start a league game under the stand-in manager due to Rashford’s excellent form – he did, however, find the back of the net against the Cherries and the Magpies after coming off the bench.

The Belgian international started his first game under Solskjaer in the FA Cup win over Reading, and found the back of the net once again, which begs the question. Who should start up top in the crunch clash against Tottenham this Sunday?

Solskjaer plays a 4-3-3 system with just one striker up top so we are unlikely to see both start, and Lukaku’s strength and aerial ability could just prove essential in Solskjaer’s first major test.

So, Manchester United fans, who do you think should start up front? Have your say down below…

Leeds fans lavish praise on Ezgjan Alioski

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United opened up a five-point lead at the top of the Championship table courtesy of a 2-0 win over Derby County at Elland Road on Friday night.

Kemar Roofe made the breakthrough in the 20th minute, before Jack Harrison doubled the home side’s advantage early in the second period.

There were a number of standout performers on the night, but it would be fair to say that the Leeds fans absolutely loved Ezgjan Alioski’s performance at left-back.

Alioski – a 2017 arrival from Lugano – was blasted by the Leeds supporters following the team’s 2-1 defeat at Queens Park Rangers in the FA Cup last weekend.

The 26-year-old put in a fine performance against Derby on Friday night, however, and it seems that the club’s fans agree that he is better as a full-back.

It is funny how quickly things can change in football and Alioski’s display against the Rams showed that he can be a big player in the second half of the season.

Ward-Prowse improvement shows how bad Mark Hughes was for Southampton

According to The Mail Online, Jamie Redknapp has praised Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse after his latest showings for The Saints.

The 24-year-old scored a stunner against Everton at the weekend, as well as registering another goal in their previous Premier League outing against Leicester.

This caused Redknapp to praise the England international’s work-rate and passing range, as he looks rejuvenated under new manager Ralph Hasenhüttl. In fact, the entire squad does, as Southampton are now undefeated in their last three league games. The club have climbed up out of the relegation zone, sitting three points above 18th place Cardiff.

But it is not just Ward-Prowse who looks to have benefited from the Austrian’s arrival at St Mary’s, as a host of other stars have hugely improved too. The likes of Nathan Redmond and Danny Ings have been re-energised since the new manager arrived in December, as his attacking philosophy looks to be paying dividends. What this does highlight is that The Saints were festering under Mark Hughes, and they almost paid the price last season as they just avoided relegation, and looked destined for a very similar fate this campaign.

Hasenhüttl must be praised for what he has brought out of his players this season, and can help the club look forward to the rest of the season. On the other hand, the board and any officials at Southampton must question their rationale behind appointing Hughes in the first place, as it was an appointment that not only negatively affected results, but stopped players like Ward-Prowse progressing.
