Would Jonathan David be a good signing for Arsenal?

Arsenal seem to be preparing potential summer signings already, with Goal reporting that they are scouting Gent striker Jonathan David.

There has been speculation recently surrounding the future of captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and the Gunners seem to be planning for a scenario in which he is not part of the club.

Of course, it is possible that David is being targeted to play alongside Aubameyang, but with Alexandre Lacazette, Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Martinelli already in the squad, that would seem like a bit of a striker overload.

However, it is believed the 20-year-old could be available for as little as £17.5m and therefore the North London outfit have the chance to strike a good bargain, as David has scored 23 goals and assisted ten in 39 games this season.

With that under consideration, we posed a question to our writers, asking if David would be a clever acquisition for the club to make. Here is what they said.

Harry Sherlock

“The numbers that David is putting up are genuinely phenomenal but we have to sound a note of caution here; he’s playing in the Belgian top-flight. There is no guarantee he would immediately be able to jump into the Premier League and take it by storm but for the reported price, it is a risk worth taking.

“He has made 33 goal contributions this term and is already a full Canada international; he’s exactly the kind of young, hungry signing that could reap untold rewards for the club that eventually buys him.

“If it’s Arsenal, though, they will need to be patient. He’s having a breakthrough year but David is only 20 and has never played at such a high level before. Baby steps are needed.”

Idiots Abroad: Do you know where these famous Brits are playing now?

Danny Lewis

“This could prove to be an intelligent acquisition for Arsenal.

“If they sell Aubameyang and buy David then there will be plenty of money left over to improve weak areas in the team, such as centre-back. In addition, there are signs that the Canadian can be a positive signing in his own right, as indicated by his recent performance in the Europa League second leg against AS Roma.

“During that game he scored his team’s only goal, while also making two dribbles, two key passes and getting two shots on target. This will be considered a risk due to the level of football he has been playing, but it could prove to be worth it.”

Billy Meyers

“This would be Guendouzi 2.0 in the respect that Arsenal would be jumping the gun to land a player who isn’t yet considered as a star, but surely looks like he’ll become one.

“His goal record so far this season is utterly superb with 23 strikes to his name in all competitions, as well as ten assists. David also has 11 goals in just 12 appearances for the Canada national team, and at just 20 years of age, he would be a fantastic signing for the present as well as the future.

“He could be a bargain in this market and it is a deal that Arsenal should be all over as soon as they can – Mikel Arteta should be making this one of his summer priorities if Aubameyang leaves.”

Kealan Hughes

“This would be an intriguing addition for Arsenal to make as he certainly ticks a lot of boxes.

“David knows where the net is and for such a young player he has tremendous experience having played on both the international and the European stage, with a goal against Roma showing he can perform against strong opposition outside of Belgium.

“Added to that, he has room to develop and could be nurtured by Mikel Arteta, making him in many ways an ideal signing for the Spaniard, though the negative is that he could block the paths of Gabriel Martinelli and Eddie Nketiah.

“Whether this is a good move largely depends on what happens with Aubameyang, as David is simply not of the same calibre as the Gabon international and would struggle to replace his presence if he was to leave.”

Liverpool: Fans react to James Pearce Premier League update

As it stands, the Premier League has been suspended until earliest April 3 due to recent events (via BBC Sport). James Pearce has reported that if everything goes to plan with the postponements, Liverpool’s next match will be against Manchester City and the Reds could win the title at the Etihad.

Liverpool currently need just six points in order to win their first-ever Premier League title and be crowned top-flight champions for the first time in 30 years. If the league’s current suspension doesn’t last beyond April 3, the Reds will be travelling to the Etihad to take on their closest title rivals this season.

A win for the Merseyside outfit in Manchester would see them finally mathematically secure this campaign’s title.

Talks of a voided Premier League season have been rife over the last few days as situations become more severe, however, Reds fans are adamant nothing will take away this historic win they have all been waiting for.

Crystal Palace eye Gonzalo Montiel swoop

According to Olè, Crystal Palace are amongst a number of clubs interested in signing River Plate right-back Gonzalo Montiel – West Ham, Inter Milan, Roma, Real Betis and Valencia are among those who are keen to sign him.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the 4-cap Argentina international is a key man for Marcelo Gallardo.

Montiel has made 20 appearances in all competitions for River Plate this season, grabbing two assists in 19 league outings.

The 23-year-old has a €20m (£18.5m) release clause in his contract with the Argentinian giants.

West Ham made an offer of €10m (£9.3m) in January for the full-back’s services, although that was swiftly rejected by River Plate who do not seem keen to lose Montiel unless someone activates his release clause, in which case they would have no say in the matter.

Betters Joel Ward in two key areas

Crystal Palace only have one natural right-back at the club in Joel Ward, a man who has made 20 Premier League appearances this season – Martin Kelly can cover that role, although he is better suited to centre-back.

The former Portsmouth man – who briefly lost his place to Aaron Wan-Bissaka before Manchester United signed him – averages 1.9 tackles per game in the Premier League this term, and also registers just 0.2 key passes. Ward is not an attacking right-back in any sense whatsoever.

To compare him with Montiel, the Argentine slightly edges him in the tackling department by making two tackles per game this season, while the in-demand River Plate man also completes 1.1 key passes per game in Argentina’s top-flight.

These two areas are key departments for a modern-day full-back, so it is telling that Montiel betters Ward in both areas.

Calling all Eagles fans: Can you get 90% on this quickfire Palace quiz?

Of course, there are bound to be differences between Argentina and England’s top-flight, while the fact that River Plate are one of the best teams in Argentine whereas Crystal Palace are not among the best in England should also be noted.

However, Montiel is clearly in Sporting Director Dougie Freedman’s sights for a reason – he appears to be better than Ward, and is clearly quite good given the amount of clubs interested in him.

Everton: Fans are loving ‘phenomenal’ Gary Lineker tweet

Gary Lineker has tweeted about finally watching Everton, Howard’s Way and has admitted the Toffees were his favourite team to play for despite spending seven years with Leicester City.

The Match of the Day host has delighted a lot of Evertonians following his generous tweet claiming that the best team he ever played for was during his single season at Goodison Park. Lineker has described the Everton documentary as ‘wonderful’ with ‘a bunch of brilliant and fantastic people and characters’. It tells the story of Everton’s rise into the spotlight during the 1980s.

Lineker ended his era with the Foxes by joining Everton in 1985 for a fee of £833,000 (via Transfermarkt). His single season with the Blues saw him net 30 goals in 35 appearances (also Transfermarkt).

Plenty of Evertonians have swamped the 59-year-old’s tweet to show their appreciation for him, with many reminiscing on his time at Goodison. One fan has said Lineker’s message is ‘phenomenal’ whilst another has said it’s ‘one of the best tweets I’ve ever seen’.

Two Crystal Palace players who have let Hodgson down this season

Crystal Palace have been struggling to make any major impact on the Premier League for several seasons now, with only a few players of note performing well.

But who has disappointed Roy Hodgson the most this campaign?

Christian Benteke

A true one-season wonder. The Belgian got off to a flying start at his new club after leaving Liverpool in 2016, scoring an impressive 15 goals in the league alone, finishing as Palace’s highest goal scorer that year.

Since then, however, Benteke has regressed, becoming more and more like the player he was at Anfield. So far this season he has tallied one goal and one assist, the exact amount he finished on last term. It’s mind-boggling that a striker only has two goals to his name in two seasons, yet still remains in and around first-team contention.

Not only are the 29-year-old’s performances in front of goal woeful, but his more detailed stats are even worse. According to WhoScored, Benteke has a pass accuracy average of 52.4% and despite Palace winning three of their last five games, the Belgian has still struggled.

He missed three big chances across these fixtures and gave the ball away a staggering 73 times. Benteke simply isn’t the forward Palace need to climb their way up the table.

Cenk Tosun

Brought in on loan to try to solve some attacking issues, Tosun has had little joy with his new club. Scoring just one goal in his time at Selhurst Park, the Turkish forward has since been forced back to parent club Everton after recently suffering an ACL injury.

Talks were on the horizon to bring Tosun to Palace on a permanent deal, but this injury blow may change the outcome of where his future lies. Even the best athletes struggle to return from such debilitating injuries, so what should be expected from a man whose last two games in action saw him play just 16 minutes?

If Hodgson was already phasing him out of the team, it’s likely Everton will need to find another club for Tosun in the near future.

What do you think, Palace fans? Do you agree with the above or have there been worse performers under Hodgson this season?

Luke Edwards delivers latest Newcastle takeover verdict

Luke Edwards of The Telegraph has provided an update on Newcastle’s takeover talks, claiming that those trying to buy the club are “dreaming†if they think they can use Sports Direct’s falling share prices to low-ball Mike Ashley. The Toon Army are desperate for Ashley to leave St. James’ Park, and reports have suggested the latest takeover rumours are more concrete than ever before.

The Telegraph claimed earlier this week that paperwork has been filed to the Premier League over a potential deal, and The Daily Mail have also revealed that Ashley is happy to finally cash in if the right offer arrives.

However, Edwards has chimed in with what appears to be a shot at the potential buyers, fronted by Amanda Staveley, insisting she should already know exactly what Ashley wants.

Edwards reveals that Staveley claimed to have made three bids back in December 2017 which were rejected due to the structure of the payments as well as the fee itself. He also claims it is “silly†to be haggling over the price if the deal is indeed backed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund.

Fans will have to wait to find out the extent of the current takeover rumours, but there certainly seems to be way too much smoke for there to be no fire.

Arsenal fans drool over links to Velez starlet Thiago Almada

So with the current climate taking a hold on football, Arsenal are undoubtedly going to be one of the Premier League teams affected the most this summer.

There have already been suggestions that talisman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could be let go for a cut-price fee in order to bring some money in, and so a transfer window of big spending and marquee signings is going to be incredibly unlikely.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

With that being said however, Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo claim that the Gunners are very much interested in signing Velez starlet Thiago Almada, and that it is expected he will be signed by a European club before August 31.

After hearing about their links to the 19-year-old, Arsenal fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on their latest transfer target.

A couple of Arsenal fans drew comparisons with stars both past and present from the Gunners, including Alexis Sanchez and Nicolas Pepe.

At just 19, Almada would be the kind of signing that could really pay off for the north London side in the years to come.

He may not be the big-name that may excite Arsenal fans or help sell out season tickets, but he could be moulded into a bona-fide star by Mikel Arteta and co in north London.

It remains to be seen where he ends up this summer however.

Tottenham fans delighted with Ben Davies return

[ad_pod ]

Ben Davies has not featured for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League since the team’s 1-0 home defeat to Manchester United on January 13.

The Wales international has had a lot of criticism this season, but the Tottenham fans are pleased to see that the left-back has returned to the training field.

Indeed, after missing the games against Watford, Newcastle United and Leicester City, the Spurs supporters are now asking if Davies might be available to face Burnley this weekend.

Tottenham have won their last four games in all competitions, including a 3-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie on February 13.

Jan Vertonghen has been playing left wing-back in the absence of Davies, but head coach Mauricio Pochettino now has another option in a key area of the field.

Davies’ form this season has not always been terrific, but Tottenham need a strong squad at this stage as they are fighting on two fronts.

A selection of the Twitter reaction from the Spurs supporters can be seen below:

Claudio Bravo should be seriously interesting Newcastle United in the summer

Rafael Benitez should be lining up a new left-back when the summer transfer window opens in a few months time.

The Spaniard was desperate to bolster his options on the left flank back in January with Paul Dummett the only recognised left-sided defender at the club. After watching a move for Jordan Lukaku collapse, Newcastle eventually signed Antonio Barreca on loan from Monaco. However, recent reports from the Chronicle suggest the Italian was low on Benitez’s list of potential targets which makes a permanent move in the summer unlikely.

While Matt Ritchie has performed admirably at left wing-back, it’s clear the former Liverpool boss needs to sign a natural left defender in the summer. Staying in the Premier League will be crucial to Newcastle’s summer transfer plans. Benitez will be hoping the sale of the club is also concluded so transfer funds are made available.

One man the ex-Real Madrid manager should be keeping tabs on is Banfield wonderkid – Claudio Bravo. Valued at just £525k by Transfermarkt, the left-back has been one of the most consistent performers in the Argentina Primera Division this season after breaking into the first-team. Bravo has been ever-present during his 12 appearances this season, earning plenty of praise for his excellent showings.

First and foremost, the 21-year-old is an excellent defender who would add some much-needed stability to the Magpies’ back four. Remarkably, Bravo has averaged an incredible 5.9 tackles per game in Argentina – more than any other player in all of Europe’s top five leagues this season.

Despite his young age, Bravo also reads the game superbly, making 3.7 interceptions per game, again no player in Europe’s top five leagues has averaged more. Not only does the youngster excel defensively, he also loves to get forward to help out the attack, averaging an impressive 2.2 successful dribbles and 1.3 key passes per game (WhoScored).

Bravo has the potential to be special and could be Newcastle’s long-term solution to their left-back dilemma.
