El Hadji Diouf was probably one of the least liked footballers in the world after his career in England ended.

It was 2002 when Senegalese sensation El Hadji Diouf touched down in the Premier League, joining from French side Lens.

“We can confirm that African Footballer of the Year El-Hadji Diouf has now signed a five-year deal with Liverpool, which is wonderful news for everyone at the club,” club spokesman Ian Cotton revealed in a statement on the club’s website (via The Irish Times).

Excitement soon turned to misery, however; Diouf managed a paltry eight goals in 80 appearances for the club and was more known for his controversial behaviour on the pitch than his footballing ability – which was poor, by the way.

Club legends Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard were vocally objected to all things Diouf, as well, with the former later claiming that “his attitude disgusted me,” and the latter judging that he “had no real interest in football” and “cared nothing about Liverpool” (FourFourTwo).

And a 2018 RMC Sport interview (via Sky Sports) with the forward would confirm that.

“I would say Liverpool,” he said when asked which shirt he regretted wearing the most. “Because if I had the chance again I would go to Manchester United or Barcelona. At the time they wanted me also.”

Neither Old Trafford nor the Nou Camp were beckoning after his flop period at Anfield, however, and his next move was to the slightly less exotic Reebok Stadium and Bolton Wanderers.

Three relatively successful years scoring 24 times in 133 earned him a brief move to Sunderland where he spent just half a year before being reunited with Big Sam Allardyce.

“He is a talented player. He can be a little wayward, as everybody knows, but hopefully I’ll be able to control him as much as I did when I was at Bolton,” Allardyce said in 2009.

Diouf would only stoke the fires of hatred during his two-year tenure at Blackburn; and Gerrard did not despise him enough beforehand, he would have new levels of disdain when Diouf taunted the travelling Liverpool supporters after their 3-1 collapse at Ewood Park.

Upon Allardyce’s sacking at Blackburn, Diouf was shipped out almost immediately to Rangers where he helped the club win their last domestic title before Celtic’s dominance.

According to the Independent, the forward returned to the Ewood dressing room brandishing his winners medal around his neck. He was quickly released and picked up by Doncaster Rovers (?) before joining Neil Warnock’s Leeds United side.

Obscurity would soon gobble El Hadji Diouf up and after a brief spell at Malaysian side Sabah FA, he retired from the game.

This did not stop controversial outbreaks though. “I have no problem with him,” he revealed to BBC  News on the Gerrard feud. “He is a strong character and I am a strong character.

“‘Stevie G’ was a very good player, ” he continued. “People like him in Liverpool but he never did anything for his country. I am Mr El Hadji Diouf, Mr Senegal but he is Mr Liverpool and Senegal is bigger than Liverpool and he has to know that.”

Says it all really.

According to Calciomercato, Liverpool are interested in a move for Leicester’s Ben Chilwell, who is also attracting admiring glances from Manchester City.

Well, the England international has impressed over the course of the last few seasons with a string of excellent performances for the Foxes, form that has led to him earning his first senior England cap.

Pep Guardiola’s reigning Premier League champions have expressed an interest in the 22-year-old, although it has been reported that they may have to break the world-record fee for a defender if they want to bring him to the Etihad – the existing record remains at the £75m spent on Virgil van Dijk by Liverpool.

Former boss Brendan Rodgers has revealed that he tried to bring Chilwell to Anfield when he was in charge of the club, whilst the Reds also took a look at him before deciding to bring Andy Robertson to the club.

 Adam Lewis’ development should be prioritised 

Jurgen Klopp already has Robertson at his disposal, who is arguably one of the best left-backs in Europe right now, so a big-money move for Chilwell seems crazy.

You may argue that the Reds need backup in that area with Alberto Moreno’s contract set to expire in the summer, but young Adam Lewis should not be ignored in this discussion.

The 19-year-old only recently signed a new long-term contract with the club, and appears to be highly-rated by Klopp seeing as the German involved Lewis in the warm weather training camp in Marbella in February, in which he gained valuable first-team experience.

To splash such a huge amount on Chilwell with a talented young prospect waiting in the wings would be a huge waste, and severely detrimental to the teenager’s development.

Hearts are close to securing the long-term services of former Everton and Rangers winger Steven Naismith when the player becomes a free agent in the summer.

The Express report, despite lucrative offers to play in the MLS, Naismith wants to sign on for a longer stay at Tynecastle in a bid to force his way back into the Scotland squad.

The 32-year-old is currently recovering from knee surgery, but still has an outside chance of playing again this season, before the official end of his loan-spell from Norwich.

The player has been on loan at Hearts since January 2018, and is said to be taking a significant reduction in salary to stay in Scotland, but he is prepared to do so, to fulfil his international ambitions.

Manager, Craig Levein, had made Naismith his top priority, and to get a deal over the line so soon will be a huge boost for the former Scotland manager.

With him also looking to tie-up a deal for Derby County midfielder, Craig Bryson and on the verge of securing Livingston defender Craig Halkett on a free, it bodes of promising times for the Edinburgh club.

Naismith is a popular figure at Tynecastle, and having him spurn more money abroad to commit to Levein’s cause, make his permanent signing a mutually beneficial move for both player and club.

With some new players and, hopefully, an injection of cash, it would be great for Scottish football if Hearts could get back to the good old days of challenging the top two on a regular basis.

All Jambos fans around Scotland would love that to be the case.

According to Super Haber, Gary Medel has agreed terms with West Ham United over a summer move to the London Stadium.

Medel will see his contract with Besiktas expire in the summer of 2020.

The 31-year-old has previous experience of Premier League football having turned out for Cardiff City during the 2013-14 campaign, before joining Italian giants Inter Milan.

And it appears that the midfielder is heading back to England’s top flight.

According to Super Haber, Medel has already agreed terms with West Ham, where he will link up with fellow Chilean Manuel Pellegrini.

However, it would be fair to say that the London club’s fans are not overly pleased with the news.

Indeed, it is expected that Medel will be on big wages if he moves to London and the West Ham supporters are struggling to make sense of the transfer.

Leeds fans have been clamouring for Izzy Brown to get a chance in the first team after a good performance for the under 23s against Ipswich on Monday.

Brown impressed a number of Leeds supporters with his performance against Ipswich’s U23s which left several of them calling for him to be given more first-team opportunities under Marcelo Bielsa.

The Chelsea loanee has suffered an injury-plagued season which has led to him making only one appearance for Leeds so far. Brown is now back fit but is still having to play youth football, a decision which has many Leeds fans scratching their heads.

Brown had previously been an important player at Huddersfield Town during their promotion campaign and he also has Premier League experience after spending the 2017/18 season on loan with Brighton.

The 22-year-old clearly has the talent to be an important player at any Championship club and Leeds fans want to see him given more of an opportunity as we approach the business end of the season.

وتابع: “ربما يكون أسلوب فيرمينو على مدار مباراة إيفرتون لم يكن به أي خطأ، لكن إذا استمرت معاناته في تسجيل الأهداف ضد المنافسين، فلن يساعده ذلك على تطوير مهاراته الفنية والإبداعية المعروفة للجميع والتي تساعد زملاءه في خط الهجوم”.

According to Football Insider, Leeds United are lining up a £7m summer bid for Reading midfielder John Swift whichever division they find themselves in next season, but where would he fit in at Elland Road?

Well, it would certainly be no surprise if Marcelo Bielsa was looking for another option in the middle of the park given some of the issues he has had to deal with at times this season.

Injuries and suspensions have often led to the Yorkshire outfit being short in these key areas, with Tyler Roberts a prime example of this in recent weeks with the striker performing in more of a No.10 role.

Leeds signed Lewis Baker from Chelsea on a season-long loan deal last summer but the move failed to work out and he returned to Stamford Bridge early, with the 23-year-old failing to prove that he was the right fit in a Bielsa side.

Swift is different

In a team struggling at the bottom of the Championship, the 23-year-old has been a real shining light for the Royals.

As well as providing five goals and three assists in 34 appearances in the league this term, he has that turn of pace, skill and eye for a forward pass in the middle of the park that the likes of Adam Forshaw and Mateusz Klich sometimes lack.

The fact that he has completed 1.6 key passes and 1.4 dribbles on average every game this season compared to 1.3 and 0.7 for Klich certainly backs that up.

The Poland international has flittered between the No.8 and No.10 roles for the Whites throughout the current campaign, but he has shown for his country that he is able to play a deeper one effectively given his high work rate.

Swift, who can also play both effectively, would be able to take up the No.10 position and with Kalvin Phillips making the defensive midfield role his own, it would leave Forshaw out of the starting XI consistently.
