In the Pipeline: West Brom’s Dara O’Shea

[ad_pod ]

Upon seeing the news that Dara O’Shea had attracted the interest of the Premier League, West Brom fans must have been fearing the worst.

Here we go again will likely have been the cry from many quarters. Because for Albion, they are no strangers to seeing their best youth prospects pack their bags and head elsewhere.

O’Shea could be doing exactly that, after The Daily Mail suggested Bournemouth and Crystal Palace had an interest in the defender.

But where other players have come and gone, the 20-year-old would represent one of the biggest blows if he was to leave.

Why? Because the vast majority of the talents coming through, and indeed prospects that have left the club, tend to be attackers and midfielders.

At the moment West Brom have the likes of Rayhaan Tulloch, Jamie Soule, Kyle Edwards and Morgan Rodgers all coming through in forward areas. The Baggies’ defensive talents are also strong but not compared to those who produce the goals.

As such, holding on O’Shea is key and given interest from other Premier League clubs it would be massive if he stayed at the Hawthorns.

After all, the experience he already holds at senior level could be crucial. This season he’s spent the campaign with Exeter where he’s impressed significantly. So much so that his manager, Matt Taylor, told BBC Sport: “He could go all the way.”

What makes that statement even more impressive is that O’Shea didn’t even start out in association football. He initially started out as a gaelic footballer, before making the move from St Kevin’s Boys to Albion in 2017.

It’s easy to see why the Irishman is rated so highly though; at the age of 20, to be the type of commanding player he is, is a rare commodity. It’s no surprise interest has sprung from elsewhere following his 23 appearances in League Two this term either.

Out of all of the young players coming through who are yet to break into the first team, O’Shea arguably has the greatest chance of attaining consistent minutes at West Brom.

He doesn’t have too many players ahead of him in the pecking order and given Albion’s defensive inconsistencies this season they’d do far worse than giving him a chance next term.

With Mason Holgate’s and Tosin Adarabioyo’s loan deals ending and Craig Dawson’s contract set to expire in 2020, there will be no better chance to make the grade from a defensive point of view.

Liverpool: Turkish wonderkid Abdulkadir Omur can be Jurgen Klopp’s next Salah

If Liverpool’s fantastic result against Barcelona proved anything, it’s that there’s a future beyond Mohamed Salah.

Granted, the Egyptian King’s been the driving factor in Jurgen Klopp’s amazing project since his arrival in 2017, yet the German coach’s impressive ability to unearth top players for his system is unrivalled right now. Think of Xherdan Shaqiri, Andy Robertson and Georginio Wijnaldum. Not exactly the biggest signings at the time but look at them now.

He’s known to give rise to talented youngsters and turn them into superstars, with the likes of Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold looking great these days. So, Klopp is seemingly eager to maintain this reputation, as according to reports from Asist Analiz is pushing for Turkish young sensation Abdulkadir Omur’s signature.

The 19-year-old is nicknamed as “The Turkish Messi” for his similar style to the Argentine legend, displaying insane work on the ball.

Omur’s a treat to watch due to his exciting nature, as his peak dribbling ability and tendency to just whiz past defenders makes him a menace. The 19-year-old’s scored 4 goals, assisted 7 this season while averaging 1.6 dribbles, 1.3 shots, 1 key pass per game (stats via WhoScored).

For a youngster, his ability to take on defenders is pretty impeccable.

The Turkish sensation has all the traits to be something special and can take that giant leap forward by joining Liverpool. Indeed, Klopp can unearth his best qualities to slowly integrate him as Salah’s long-term successor. In fact, Omur’s style is quite like Salah, as he loves tricking past defenders, cutting in and aiming to score or create opportunities.

The 19-year-old just needs to tune up some aspects of his game, something Klopp can help him with. Who better, in fact? The German gaffer can turn him into a more complete destroyer of defences and allow this sizzling youngster to be his next attacking leader.

Eddie Howe performs U-turn as he heaps praise on Palace match-winner Wilfried Zaha

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace rounded off their season on a high note with a 5-3 victory over Bournemouth at Selhurst Park – the most goals Palace fans have seen at SE25 from their side all campaign.

As he has done many times this season, Wilfried Zaha took centre stage on the final day, having a hand in all five Eagles goals and also getting some unwanted, or perhaps wanted, attention from the Bournemouth fans who were intent on making him the villain of the afternoon.

The Ivorian was involved in an altercation with Jefferson Lerma and looked certain to be sent off after questioning Roger East’s decision to book him, although just seconds later the speedy number 11 had bounced through two cynical attempts to bring a halt to his furious run and teed up Andros Townsend.

The focus on the match-winner didn’t end there, though, with Eddie Howe reserving some special praise for him after all was said and done.

What did he say?

Zaha is unplayable on his day and this was certainly a game that belonged to the former Manchester United wide man, as Cherries boss Eddie Howe suggested in his post-match comments:

“We didn’t deal very well with (Zaha) at all. We’ve maybe not had a better individual opponent this season. He was very difficult to contain.

“But we have to be critical of our defending; that’s something to focus on next season. We’ve conceded too many goals and it’s hampered our ability to win more.”

A U-turn from Howe

As the 41-year-old says, the Cherries defence could hardly get near Zaha, who had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon down the left flank and was denied an 11th goal of the season by Mark Travers in the first half, only for Jack Simpson to inadvertently knock the rebound home.

Back in 2017, Howe appeared to question Zaha’s integrity by accusing him of diving, strongly insinuating he had gone down easily in a 2-2 draw. But the Vitality Stadium chief seems to have changed his tune since and, by labelling him as Bournemouth’s best ‘individual opponent’ this season, reserved praise of the highest order for the scourge of his side.

Watch the Pl>ymaker FC painfully relive their clubs’ most gutting moments of the last 10 years in the video below…

Indeed, Zaha has established himself as one of the best outside the top-six and Howe’s comments are reinforced by Trent Alexander-Arnold’s statement that he is the ‘hardest’ player he has come up against.

Completing 3.4 dribbles per game this season, the 10-goal star is a nightmare to play against and, like many of the defenders who resort to illegal methods when it comes to stopping him, Howe seems to have finally accepted that, as Palace fans will tell you, he’s just too good.

The Verdict: Should Liverpool make Matthijs de Ligt their No.1 target?

[ad_pod ]

It has recently been reported by Mundo Deportivo that, despite Barcelona looking to have sewn up a deal for Ajax sensation Matthijs de Ligt, Liverpool have emerged as a potential candidate for his signature.

The Reds are allegedly trying to partner the 19-year-old wonderkid with his international centre-back partner Virgil van Dijk. Ajax chief executive officer Edwin van der Sar recently revealed that De Ligt will move to either Spain or England, so the Reds are very much in the running for his signature.

Has Salamon Rondon had a better season than Bobby Firmino? Matt from The Magpie Channel discusses in the video below…

However, Jurgen Klopp already has Van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren at his disposal; Matip specifically has starred in the second half of the season in Gomez’s absence through injury.

They are well stocked in the centre-back department, but De Ligt is a generational talent who could become the world’s best defender.

With those details in mind, should Liverpool make the teenager their No.1 target for the summer? Football FanCast’s writers have their say…

Harry Sherlock

“Yes, yes and yes again. De Ligt is better than Joel Matip and he’s also got a higher ceiling than Virgil van Dijk. He could well become the world’s best centre-back in a matter of a few years and central defence is perhaps the one area where Liverpool need to strengthen. They should throw all the money they have at Ajax; if they only make one signing this summer, it should be De Ligt. He is the missing piece.”

Matt Dawson

“This is a difficult one. Liverpool’s defence hardly needs much work and there aren’t many gaps that they need to plug. The fact they lost the title on 97 points is a strong indication that there isn’t too much room for improvement. However, if the club are to make anyone their priority this summer then it has to be De Ligt. He’ll have no shortage of suitors ahead of next season and therefore, acquiring him would be a monumental sign of intent. Just imagine the partnership alongside van Dijk. It would be mouth-watering.”

Harry Elnaugh

“The 19-year-old is already a top, top talent and is only going to get better, but signing him would be extremely harsh on Joel Matip, who has been immense next to van Dijk. De Ligt would make Liverpool’s defence truly world-class but they might be better served spending as much money on the Coutinho replacement they’re yet to find.”

West Brom: Harvey Barnes’ debacle pinpoints need for more stringent loan deals

One could point out that problems started to occur in West Bromwich Albion’s game after Harvey Barnes was recalled from his loan by Leicester City.

The Baggies fired manager Darren Moore afterwards, somewhat scraping into the play-offs, in which they were dominated by Aston Villa.

Barnes was a big reason for their early dominance, proving an important figure in their attack. Indeed, even his team-mates think his premature departure in January affected (Old Baggies via the Leicester Mercury) their chances of Premier League promotion.

Why wouldn’t it?, after all He scored 9 goals and assisted 6 times in his five-month loan spell, bringing energy and flair to spice up their attack.

If anyone is to be blamed, it’s West Brom’s fairly incompetent management. The way their partnership with Barnes ended prematurely should be a reality check for Luke Dowling. He should recruit the targets the right way from now on. Loaning players isn’t wrong, but it’s the manner in which you do it.

From now on, West Brom should look for the kind of loan deals according to their own benefits. They need to make sure players cannot be recalled again next season, leaving a big void in their system.

How West Brom’s attack mellowed down after Barnes’ departure was very surprising. However, the Baggies should take this as a lesson learnt to loan in more devoted players to go all the way into lodging a better push for Premier League promotion.

Overrated: Leeds fans turn on Jack Clarke as Tottenham move looms

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter have been turning on Jack Clarke after being asked their unpopular opinions about the club.

This comes just days after it was rumoured that the young winger could be on his way to Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Clarke has had a breakthrough campaign at Elland Road this season, appearing in 24 games for the Whites. During that time he has scored twice and assisted twice whilst showing enough potential to attract the interest of the Champions League finalists.

£10 million is the reported fee that Spurs are hoping to bag the 18-year-old for, and that may prove to be enough to secure his services.

It didn’t take long for fans of the Yorkshire club to do a complete U-turn on the teenager following some high praise for him on Twitter earlier in the campaign, and on more than one occasion.

Many have taken to social media to brand him as overrated while some believe that he isn’t even the most promising talent at the club with that title instead belonging to Jamie Shackleton.

Here’s what the Elland Road faithful have been saying on Twitter…
