Kyle Walker-Peters faces a defining season at Tottenham Hotspur.

The right-back has appeared on the verge of a first-team breakthrough for at least two seasons now and 2019/20 could be the time for him to finally come to the fore.

The 22-year-old has, thus far, made a total of 19 appearances for Spurs. Ten of those came in 2018/19, including one at the Camp Nou, as Mauricio Pochettino’s men looked to get a result against Barcelona to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages.

Walker-Peters made the mistake that led to Ousmane Dembele’s opener and was substituted; Spurs went on to take a point with Lucas Moura scoring the important goal.

Yet the talent is evident. In one Premier League game against AFC Bournemouth, Walker-Peters laid on three assists. Fellow right-back Kieran Trippier laid on three all season; his deputy, Serge Aurier, registered just two.

Walker-Peters also manages a higher pass completion rate than the pair; 83% to Aurier’s 75.5% and Trippier’s 78.9%.

Now, it remains to be seen if both players will be at Spurs next season. Both the England international and the Ivory Coast star are said to be expendable this summer, per Duncan Castles of the Transfer Window Podcast.

It speaks to how poor a season they both had that the club are willing to let both leave, as the right-back position became a major weak point for the Lilywhites at times last term.

And one has to assume that, if they depart, a new right-back will arrive.

But what can be the harm in giving Walker-Peters the chance to grab the mantle?

He is a quick, technically sound defender who has repeatedly shown that he can create chances for his team-mates and beat his man in the final third.

He is a young player, yes, but Pochettino has always shown a willingness to place his faith in youth; the likes of Juan Foyth, Harry Winks and Dele Alli have all benefitted immensely from his tactics.

Now is the time to throw Walker-Peters into the deep end.

If he swims, Spurs win and so does the player, as he nails down the spot as the club’s first-choice right-back.

If he sinks, the club will either have their current options or a new replacement, and Walker-Peters can go back to where he is now – the bench.

Manuel Pellegrini is happy with his West Ham United squad and is not planning on making any more major signings, per ClaretandHugh.

What’s the word?

The Hammers have signed Pablo Fornals and Sebastian Haller in this transfer window, as well as goalkeepers Roberto and David Martin.

ClaretandHugh reports that Pablo Obiang is nearing a move to Serie A but there aren’t currently any plans to replace him.

As it stands, the club have Jack Wilshere, Declan Rice, Mark Noble and Carlos Sanchez as their options in central midfield.

A glaring omission

West Ham need more depth in midfield.

The club may have four players capable of playing in the middle of the pitch but Wilshere cannot be relied upon to stay fit – he made eight appearances in the Premier League last season due to injury – while Noble is 32 and Sanchez underwent knee surgery in 2018/19.

The club have recruited a new striker and a new attacking midfielder but, really, they need further reinforcements.

If the worst-case scenario comes around again and both Wilshere and Sanchez are ruled out for any length of time, they will be left to rely on an ageing Noble staying fit and Rice replicating the exceptional displays in 2018/19 that earned him an England call-up.

Beyond that, an injury or suspension for Rice would leave Pellegrini with just his skipper and two extremely injury-prone players to call on.

It feels like a mighty risk.

Speaking in a pre-match press conference (as quoted by Football Italia), Lazio boss Simone Inzaghi has admitted that Manchester United target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic could be allowed to leave the club this summer as long as an “important offer” arrived.

What’s the word?

Reports in recent weeks have suggested that United are very much interested in bringing the Serbia international to Old Trafford, and that the midfielder himself wished to leave Lazio.

Now, the Italian side’s manager has confirmed that whilst he would like Milinkovic-Savic to stay, he wouldn’t stand in his way if offers were to arrive.

He said: “My thoughts are that I’d like Milinkovic-Savic to stay, but I also believe the club has to consider offers when they come in and then make a decision. We know that if he was to leave, we’d have some important shoes to fill. I hope he remains, he had a great pre-season training camp, but the market is open and we are ready for any situation.

“Milinkovic is 24-years-old now, he’s no longer a kid. I can give him advice, he is at our disposal and hasn’t missed a training session, but then I don’t know what will happen. I hope he stays. If an important offer arrives, it is only right that the club take it into consideration.”

Time for United to make their move

As the transfer deadline approaches, United are running out of time to get their act together and start making serious moves in the transfer market. The early deals for Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka got things going, but it has been relatively slow progress at Old Trafford since then.

Clubs are far less likely to want to do business with the deadline approaching, and would be keen on leaving themselves enough time to secure a replacement themselves. Dithering on an offer for Milinkovic-Savic would simply create more problems than it needs to, and United are not exactly in a position to keep adding to the transfer stresses they already have with the likes of Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku.

Inzaghi’s comments are essentially a plea to United to get the ball rolling and is perhaps the first step in the midfielder eventually ending up at Old Trafford. Now it’s United’s turn to make their move.

Manchester United clinched the signing of Harry Maguire from Leicester City earlier this week, and he doesn’t appear to have wasted much time settling in with his new teammates.

The 26-year-old England international joins the Red Devils and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on a six-year contract and will also have an option to extend it for a further year should his time at Old Trafford prove to be a success.

Interestingly enough, with this transfer, Manchester United have also broken the world record by forking out a total £80m, making Maguire the most expensive defender in history.

Be that as it may, Jesse Lingard and the newcomer Maguire have been having some fun on social media in the last couple of days since the Englishman has joined the club.

Lingard has already shared a couple of funny snaps and now he has taken to

The 2019/20 Premier League season is finally here and the array of optimism filters across the country ahead of this weekend.

Opening fixtures are always difficult to predict. New signings, new tactics and a new beginning – what teams will gel together the fastest?

Whether your ambition is survival or pushing for the Premier League title, it is a time for every fan to get excited about the new campaign.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool kickstart the 2019/20 campaign against newly-promoted Norwich City at Anfield and they will be determined to accelerate from the very start.

This season promises to be a thoroughly entertaining spectacle with multiple teams set to contest for a top-six finish; starting the season on a positive note could be the crucial difference between achieving a European spot or mid-table mediocrity.

But what do the stats suggest could happen this weekend? Here is every club’s opening day record in the Premier League from worst to best…

Brighton – W0, D0, L2

The Seagulls narrowly avoided relegation last season and they will be hoping to break their opening day jinx against Watford this weekend.

Brighton have lost both of their opening Premier League match-ups and the closest they came to a result was against Manchester City, but could only hold them off for 70 minutes and lost the match 2-0.

Bournemouth – W1, D0, L3

Eddie Howe has established Bournemouth as a competitive, Premier League side but their opening day stats are not overly impressive – winning just once out of four attempts.

The Cherries host newly-promoted Sheffield United this weekend and is certianly a game they will be eyeing three points from.

Norwich City – W1, D3, L4

Another newly-promoted outfit is Norwich, returning to the top-tier of English football for the first time since 2016.

The Canaries’ only opening day victory was against Sunderland four years ago and it will take something special to beat Liverpool this weekend.

Burnley – W1, D1, L3

Burnley flirted with relegation in the 2018/19 campaign and they will be eager to push themselves away from the drop as early as possible.

The Clarets drew 0-0 against Southampton at St Mary’s on the opening day last season and this weekend the fixture is reversed as they play host to the Saints; finding a winning formula would be an excellent start for Sean Dyche’s men.

Southampton – W2, D10, L8

Southampton have a habit of drawing their opening Premier league fixtures and have done so 50% of the time.

Ralph Hassenhuttl steered the club away from the drop last season and his attacking philosophy could prove too hot to handle this weekend against the aforementioned Burnley.

Leicester City – W2, D5, L6

The Foxes faced a difficult opening encounter last season as they suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford and they will clash with another tricky opponent this time around – Wolves.

Leicester have only won twice on the opening day and they will have to be on top of their game if they are to overcome an exciting Wolves outfit.

Watford – W1, D3, L2

The Hornets have participated in six Premier League seasons – only winning one opening day clash.

Watford got off to a flying start last season and beat Brighton 2-0 on the opening day – this fixture repeats itself this weekend and they will be hoping for a similar outcome.

Crystal Palace – W3, D2, L5

Palace have won 30% of their opening Premier League fixtures and they will be seeking to improve that come Saturday.

The Eagles play host to Everton this weekend and they will be desparate to distance themselves from the relegation zone early on.

Newcastle United – W7, D7, L10

Newcastle have played in 24 of the 27 Premier League seasons, winning seven of their opening day encounters.

This weekend they face a testing clash against Arsenal at St James’ Park and they will have to perform to the highest standard if they are to avoid adding another defeat to the stats.

Everton – W7, D11, L8

The Toffees have only ever missed one Premier League season and their opening day record is fairly impressive, averaging 1.23 points per match.

Everton have made some solid signings this summer and they will be optimistic of starting the season fast at Selhurst Park this weekend.
