Kristoffer Ajer has had to deal with being moved across to right-back in the early parts of the season. He’s done well, but it could be hampering him from reaching his sky-high potential at Celtic.

On the chalkboard

The 21 year-old has been forced to play on the right-hand side of the defence a few times already this season and he’s been far from a disappointment. His goal against Motherwell highlights his prowess going forward, while his defensive capabilities are clear for all to see.

He’s been forced to move to this unfamiliar position thanks to the club’s inefficiency in the transfer market, failing to land a lot of their right-back targets. They’ve since brought in Hatem Abd Elhamed and are still looking at others, so it appears he might revert back to his natural role at centre-half eventually.

But while his tactical flexibility is nothing new, it could be holding him back, particularly if Neil Lennon fails to land another right-back and continues to shuffle him around the park.

Use him or lose him

Ajer has been stepping up as the club’s first-choice centre back for the past six months, despite Jozo Simunovic’s upturn in form and Christopher Jullien’s big-money arrival. He played 45 times in all competitions last season.

He is well on track to becoming an incredible defender capable of being a regular for a Champions League side – there are even comparisons to former Celt and current Ballon D’Or favourite Virgil van Dijk, and deservedly so after Ajer’s fantastic 2018/19 campaign.

And while he has proved to be quite capable in other areas, Ajer deserves the same luxury that was afforded to van Dijk – letting him play unobstructed in the heart of the defence.

There’s also the worry that his performances are getting admiring glances from rich suitors. Both Leicester and AC Milan have been linked to the defender this summer and they likely won’t be the only ones if he has another top season, so keeping him happy is a must.

Celtic must start to give Ajer the responsibility he deserves and stop shuffling him about. They risk damaging his development, or even worse, losing him altogether.

وتحدث أزبيليكويتا على تأُثير توخيل على تشيلسي في مؤتمره الصحفي للمباراة، قائلا: “منذ اليوم الأول كان توماس واضحًا بشأن الأفكار التي يريد تطبيقها على الفريق، ونحاول تنفيذ ما يطلبه منا، ونجحنا بذلك في تحقيق الفوز ببعض المباريات، وهو ما يمنحنا الثقة في أنفسنا”.

وعن مباراة أتلتيكو مدريد: “فريق صعب للغاية ويتصدر الدوري الإسباني، نحن نعلم أننا نواجه فريقًا قويًا لديه خبرة في دوري أبطال أوروبا، ولكن علينا أن نكون مستعدين لتحقيق نتيجة إيجابية ونسيان ما حدث أمام ساوثهامبتون السبت الماضي (التعادل 1-1)”.

وعن أزمة أودوي واستبداله أمام ساوثهامبتون، رد الإسباني: “بالطبع، كان موقفًا لا يُحسد عليه تمامًا أن تشارك ثم تخرج بعد 30 دقيقة فقط، وفسر المدرب الأمر، لكن من المهم أن نرى رد فعل قوي وإيجابي من كالوم”.

وعن مواجهة سواريز: “أفضل الدفاع أمامه بأسلوب جماعي، عندما كان في ليفربول وبرشلونة، لعبت أمامه ونحن نعرف إمكانياته وأرقامه، فهو مهاجم رائع للغاية، لكن سنحاول إبعاده عن مرمانا”.

وتابع: “لا نعاني في تشيلسي من أزمة في تسجيل الأهداف، نحن أقوياء دفاعيًا بشكل كبير، لكننا نفتقد اللمسة الأخيرة بعض الشيء، وهذا ما نعمل عليه في التدريبات”.

وبسؤاله “هل عدم فوزك مع تشيلسي ببطولة دوري أبطال أوروبا يمثل خيبة أمل لك؟، أجاب: “منذ انضمامي إلى الفريق كان هدفي أن أكرر هذا الإنجاز (بعد 2012)، وأتمنى أن نصل إلى مراحل بعيدة في تلك البطولة، نعلم مدى صعوبة المنافسة بين الأندية في تلك المسابقة، ولكن كمجموعة علينا أن نكون مستعدين للتحدث”.

واختتم أزبيليكويتا تصريحاته بالحديث عن سواريز وأوبلاك، وأيهما أهم في فريق أتلتيكو مدريد، قائلا: “اعتقد أن كلاهما مهم بالنسبة لفريقهما، رغم أنهما يلعبان بعيدين عن بعضهما البعض من حيث المراكز، وكان سواريز من اللاعبين المهمين في ليفربول، وكذلك أوبلاك كحارس لأتلتيكو”.

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith dropped Conor Hourihane in favour of giving new £15m signing Douglas Luiz his first start for the club at the weekend.

His home debut was a tale of two halves after a blunder in the first half allowed Harry Wilson to score his first goal for Bournemouth with a long-range deflected effort before very nearly putting the ball into his own net following a cross from the Cherries’ other Wilson, Callum.

Whilst in the second half, the Brazilian earned some reprieve having thrashed a stunning strike in from well outside the area but it wasn’t enough to claw back any form of result for the Villans as they lose their opening two matches.

Hourihane will surely feel harshly done by after losing his starting spot despite a very good showing against the Champions League runners-up, Tottenham Hotspur, on the opening day. He is currently averaging the third-highest rating of any other Villa player at 7.03.

On the Chalkboard

The 21-year-old Luiz has unquestionable talent, there’s no doubting that.

None more so then when he put in a midfield clinic against one the best teams in the world in Real Madrid – he recorded a 90.7% passing accuracy rate, made three clearances, one interception and won 100% of his tackles.

Despite that, the change in midfield for the game with Bournemouth was a strange one and it was made more questionable following Luiz’s debut in the anchorman role.

He looked far off the pace of the Premier League against Bournemouth.

This, in one part, could be down to the lack of pre-season he’s had – his work permit was finally allowed just days before the season started, meaning his substitute appearance on the opening weekend was his first minutes in a Villa shirt, including pre-season.

In addition, another factor could be the fact that the Premier League is a more intense league than any of its European rivals, including La Liga where Luiz has been plying his trade for the best part of two seasons for Girona.

In 2016, ESPN described England’s top division, saying: “Intensity in the Premier League takes a more physical form. Games tend to be more box-to-box.”

And that is arguably why Luiz struggled.

The quality of the league has increased since those comments too, as seen last season when both the Champions League and Europa League finals were contested fully by four English teams – something that had never happened before.

Against Bournemouth, Luiz had one sloppy error leading to an opposition goal and he also tied second in the game for loss of possession with five, 75% of which led to a turnover.

The 5 foot 9 midfielder did produce a moment of pure quality with his second-half strike further emphasising that the talent is there, but that merely papered over the cracks.

وتابع: “لعبت في تنزانيا قبل ذلك وأمام الجماهير، لكن درجة الحرارة مريبة، ولكن هذا ليس السبب أو المبرر، ما ضايقني أن الأهلي لعب أمس بثلاثي في وسط الملعب ولم يكن لهم أدوار هجومية”.

وأضاف: “الأهلي في آخر 10 دقائق فقط وصل لمرمى سيمبا، لماذا لم يلعب بهذا الشكل من البداية؟، أما طريقة اللعب فهي أمر يخص موسيماني، أما الأمر الذي أخذه عليه أنه لم يعط لثلاثي الوسط أي تعليمات هجومية”.

وواصل: “جيلنا كان يلعب بهذه الطريقة في بعض الأوقات، كان الثلاثي حسن مصطفى وحسام عاشور ومحمد شوقي في الوسط، ويعطيني تعليمات أنا وأبو تريكة بعدم النزول لوسط الملعب والقيام بمهام دفاعية، لأن هناك ثلاثي يغلق الوسط”.

واستمر: “هناك أمور أخرى في الملعب، كان يجب أن يكون هناك غل كروي في الملعب، لاعب الخصم كان يتحرك بأريحية حتى يصل إلى مرمى محمد الشناوي، لا يصح أن يعبر اللاعب بهذه السهولة”.

واختتم: “سيمبا فريق جيد، أنا ممكن أعذر لاعبي الأهلي لو كان الملعب سيئًا، لكن الملعب جيد، وكان من المفترض تواجد الجماهير أن يكون عامل إيجابي وليس سلبيًا، جماهير يانج أفريكانز كانوا يشجعون الأهلي، الأمر كان غريب أن يظهر المارد الأحمر بهذا الشكل”.

After a difficult game against Liverpool last weekend, Arsenal face another tough opponent in Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Match-ups between the north London rivals are always tense and, as such, the Gunners will need to be on the top of their game if they are to get three points.

Unai Emery may be looking to make some changes to the side that was beaten at Anfield, and he may re-introduce Alexandre Lacazette to the team. Despite scoring against Burnley in the previous fixtures, the former Lyon man was dropped to the bench for the Saturday evening kick-off.

One of Wolves’ summer arrivals could be on the fringes of the first-team sometime soon, that’s according to their Under-23 manager Rob Edwards.

What’s he said?

The west Midlands club signed Meritan Shabani on a three-year contract from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich for their youth team, and it appears he’s already been impressing.

The 20-year-old made three senior appearances in Bavaria, two coming in the league and has been capped at Under-20 level for Germany.

His arrival was undoubtedly part of Fosun’s plans to improve the youth setup at the club.

In four Premier League 2 matches this season, the midfielder has scored one goal, shining in the eyes of Edwards, who said:

“Meritan is showing more and more quality all the time, every day.

“We’re excited to have him in the building.

“He’ll get more and more used to English football the longer he’s here, that’s obvious, but we’re really pleased with how he’s performed.”

A viable alternative?

Wolves will surely look to rotate their squad throughout the season, having pulled out all the stops to make the Europa League group stage.

If they advance into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals then two games a week will become normality, if it hasn’t already, as they continue on into 2020.

Joao Moutinho is the club’s only true out-and-out number ten, and his absence against Everton was painstakingly clear, as we have previously highlighted this week.

The form of Shabani for the youth team should at some point catch the eye of Santo, which could give him an alternative option in that role, instead of trying to force his defensive-minded midfielders to play the same way.

The 20-year-old had enough quality to feature in a couple of Bundesliga matches, so he should be able to handle a step up from English youth football to the Premier League.

It goes without saying that south London is a real hotbed of talented young footballers.

The amount of exceptional footballers to emerge from south of the river is staggering:

– Joe Gomez

– Ryan Sessegnon

– Callum Hudson-Odoi

– Tammy Abraham

– Ademola Lookman

– Emile Smith-Rowe

– Reiss Nelson

You know, to name a few.

I could go on – south London just seems to have a conveyor belt churning out pure gold year on year.

Clubs such as Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, RB Leipzig, Hoffenheim and Liverpool have been the beneficiaries of this vast pool of talent, but one side who are, geographically speaking, perfectly placed to benefit seem to have failed to attract prospects of the highest calibre.

The side in question is Crystal Palace.

The Eagles, located in SE25, have continually overlook the goldmine that is south London talent since their promotion to the Premier League back in 2013.

Before that playoff success over Watford at Wembley, Palace had taken full advantage of the talent on their doorstep, scouting the likes of Nathaniel Clyne, Ben Watson, Wayne Routledge, Wilfried Zaha, Victor Moses and Jonny Williams, and developing them from academy players into first-team stars.

Since promotion, however, just one face has emerged from the academy in Palace’s seven consecutive seasons as a Premier League club – Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Even his emergence came courtesy of an injury crisis at right-back.

Whether that is because Steve Parish and co. have been more preoccupied with their endeavour to secure lucrative Premier League survival year-on-year with a fairly short-sighted approach is up for debate. But one thing that cannot be argued is the fact that ignoring south London talent has been a huge oversight by the Eagles.

Neglecting the homegrown talent on their own doorstep has robbed Palace of having a rich academy filled with promising players who could have been handpicked for the first-team.

Selling Wan-Bissaka to Manchester United this summer for £50m netted Palace 100% pure profit, which can now be put towards their stadium plans or improving the first-team squad.

Having said that, just imagine the opportunities before them had they been the ones to scout Gomez, Sancho, Hudson-Odoi and many more.

To put into context how lucrative that could have been for Palace, Sancho finds himself fifth on the CIES Football Observatory rankings valued at €159.4m (£143m), whilst Gomez is in 78th place valued at €67.8m (£60.8m).

It is borderline criminal for a club like Palace to be twiddling their thumbs doing nothing considering their proximity to the where these potentially world-class talents grew up.

Palace scouts should be sat on seats (or stood on muddy touchlines) in Sunday League matches all over south London at every given opportunity.

For a club of Palace’s stature, who don’t often make too much money in the form of player sales – Wan-Bissaka’s exit was the first significant fee they have received since selling Yannick Bolasie to Everton back in 2016 – it is narrow-minded and neglectful to ignore the opportunities that are situated on their doorstep.

The proof is in the pudding. It is there. It is right before their eyes.

Unfortunately, the Eagles’ eyes have been blinded for years by the lure of securing lucrative Premier League survival.

وكان صلاح محسن غاب عن تدريبات الفريق ومبارياته الأخيرة بسبب تعرضه للإصابة، أثناء مشاركته في نهائيات كأس العالم للأندية الأخيرة.

من ناحية أخرى شارك محمود متولي مدافع الفريق، في التدريبات المقامة على ملعب التتش، ضمن خطة عودته مرة أخرى للملاعب بعد التعافي من إصابة الرباط الصليبي.

وأعلن الدكتور أحمد أبوعبلة، رئيس الجهاز الطبي، سلبية المسحة الطبية التي أجراها الفريق أمس؛ استعدادا لمواجهة فيتا كلوب الكونغولي.

وأجرى لاعبو الأهلي والجهاز الفني مسحة طبية أمس وفقاً للبروتوكول الطبي المتبع قبل المباريات الرسمية في دوري أبطال إفريقيا، وجاءت النتيجة سلبية وفقا لما أعلنه رئيس الجهاز الطبي.

Real Madrid have been quite unlucky with injuries in recent weeks.

Something must be in the air in the Spanish capital because Los Blancos’ players have seemingly been dropping like flies.

Currently, they have a total of six players sidelined by various different injuries and it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that has effected their overall performances at the beginning of the new 2019/20 La Liga season.

But there is light at the end of the tunnel, after all.

Just recently, Real Madrid have officially given their fans a recovery update on three of the injured players: Eden Hazard, James Rodriguez and Brahim Diaz.

All three seem to be back in training with the squad and on the road to recovery.

This news was definitely well received by the majority of the fans and many of them quickly took to Twitter to express their excitement.
