Fenerbahce president hints at Bielsa move

Fenerbahce’s president has not ruled out the possibility of approaching Marcelo Bielsa this summer, admitting the Turkish giants are looking for a new boss in the Argentine’s mould.

The Lowdown: Bielsa transforms Leeds

Bielsa has done a phenomenal job in charge of Leeds United, guiding them back into the Premier League and playing some of the most entertaining football in the division.

The Argentine is yet to sign a new deal with the Whites though, leading to speculation surrounding his future this season, and not a fresh report has now emerged.

The Latest: Fenerbahce eye up swoop

Despite not making official contact with Bielsa, Fenerbahce’s president, Ali Koc, has spoken to outlet Milliyet [via Sport Witness] about potentially wanting to bring him in, or someone of his ilk:

“We are being linked with a move for Bielsa. But we haven’t made any contact with him. But it’s true that we are looking for a manager of his calibre. We’ll see what happens. I hope we will be able to announce our new manager in three weeks.”

The Turkish giants have won a remarkable 19 top flight titles.

The Verdict: New Leeds deal needed

It is imperative that Leeds keep hold of Bielsa for the foreseeable future, considering the manner in which he has transformed the club’s fortunes.

The 65-year-old’s standing in the game cannot be questioned – Paris Saint-German manager Mauricio Pochettino once described him as a ‘genius’ – and the Whites would find it extremely difficult to replace him.

Bielsa will hopefully sign an additional one-year deal at Leeds in the coming weeks, with nothing suggesting otherwise, but Koc’s comments are unlikely to endear him to Whites supporters, and are yet another timely reminder that plenty of teams around Europe would love to swoop in and snatch Bielsa away.

In other news, a pundit has offered a worrying take on the future of one influential Leeds player. Find out who it is here.

Youhana hits century as 1st Test ends in a draw : Saqlain declared

Lahore, Nov 19: Yousuf Youhana stroked a brilliant century as thefirst cricket Test between England and Pakistan ended in a draw atthe Qadhafi Stadium here on Sunday

Samiul Hasan20-Nov-2000Lahore, Nov 19: Yousuf Youhana stroked a brilliant century as thefirst cricket Test between England and Pakistan ended in a draw atthe Qadhafi Stadium here on Sunday.Youhana resumed this morning at 77 in Pakistan’s 333 for eight anddeparted after scoring a top class 124 as the home team were dismissedfor 401 shortly after lunch.England, who declared their first innings at 480 for eight and secureda 79-run lead, were 77 for four when the two captains decided to calloff the match with 10.5 mandatory overs still to be bowled.Saqlain Mushtaq, adjudged Man-of-the-Match, added the wicket of lastinnings’ centurion and Surrey team-mate Graham Thorpe to finish withmatch figures of nine for 178. The award was further justified afterthe 23-year-old local boy had contributed a dogged unbeaten 32.Pakistan might have succeeded to cause some more dent in the Englandconfidence when twice on successive balls they came close to pickingup the wicket of Alec Stewart who finished unbeaten on 27. But oncethe ball sped fast Saeed Anwar at short gully and the second timeSalim Elahi failed to hold on to a sharp catch at silly point. Theopportunities came in the last over before tea and the sufferer wasMushtaq Ahmad. But snapping up England’s four wickets for 77 runs would certainlygive Pakistan the confidence to take another shot at the tourists`weak link’ in the second Test which begins in Faisalabad from Nov 29.Nonetheless, the draw proved to be a big morale and confidence boosterfor the Englishmen who were considered to be weak in facing thequality spinners. Contrary to the pundits’ prediction that the matchwould last for three days, it went on for five and England dominatedthe play almost for four days.England brought Pakistan on the brink of follow-on when they reducedthem to 273 for eight. But it was a different story that despitehaving broken the back of top order, they couldn’t overcome theresistance of Saqlain Mushtaq and Yousuf Youhana who featured in a127-run stand in 228 minutes. For Pakistan, it was a narrow escape but a good one. It displayedPakistan’s grit and guts to fight when the chips are down. And the man who showed the way to his senior players was YousufYouhana who started on Sunday from where he had left the otherevening. He looked purposeful and on a mission. He stroked the ball well andshowed a compact defence in blocking good deliveries. The highlightsof his innings was the shot selection.Nasser Hussain, the England captain, shuffled his bowlers and madequick changes to upset Youhana’s concentration but failed. His dismissal cannot be put to poor shot but a very good delivery fromAshley Giles which spun just across him and took the outside edge ofhis bat and into the gloves of Alec Stewart.”The secret to his batting was his very good footwork and excellenttiming,” Pakistan coach Javed Miandad said, adding: “I have beenworking hard on him, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Shahid Afridi. I am delightedthat all delivered the goods, and specially Yousuf.”Yousuf, who stroked his fourth career century and second on thisground, batted for 13 minutes over six hours and faced 308 balls. Hisinnings spiced eight signature boundaries and a six.Youhana’s mental toughness, concentration and application can bejudged from the fact that when he came out to bat, Pakistan were 199for three which later became 273 for eight with the PIA batsman on 37.From then onwards, he took control of the innings and scored 86 runsin a 123-run stand with Saqlain Mushtaq.Saqlain also showed that he was not a rabbit with the bat whileremaining unbeaten on 32 and proving his reputation as a bigpartnership player. He was also involved in a record 313-run eighthwicket stand against Zimbabwe at Sheikhupura four years ago.Saqlain frustrated the Englishmen for exactly four hours during whichhe received a 157 balls. He hit two fours.England, despite being held by a spirited rearguard Pakistan action, will be delighted with the performance of Ashley Giles and CraigWhite, the two inexperienced bowlers who equally shared eight wicketsbetween them.Giles, playing in his second Test, altered his line brilliantly whenhe bowled from close to the wicket with his spinning line being middleand off. He also varied his pace and at times hit the deck hard in aneffort to extract some abnormal bounce or spin.White, the Yorkshireman, effectively and deceptively changed his pace.He also succeeded in making the ball reverse swing because he bowledfaster than most of the pacers. The most impressive thing about Whitewas that he made the batsmen play rather than wasting his energy inwayward deliveries. The first Test has ended in an entertaining draw. But several lessonsare to be learnt for both the teams. Let’s see which of the two aremore professional in picking lose threads quickly and effectively

Tourists afford series a sting in the tail

It took until the penultimate day of the series, and relied on the inspiration of two players who have barely figured through its duration

John Polack05-Jan-2001It took until the penultimate day of the series, and relied on the inspiration of two players who have barely figured through its duration. But, at last, the sight of WestIndies refusing to yield to Australia arrived. As a result, we finally have a contest too; at stumps on the fourth day of the Fifth Test here at the Sydney CricketGround, Australia is at 2/44 chasing a target of 173 to win.The excellent form of Ridley Jacobs (62) has been a constant throughout this summer so it represented little surprise to see him at the heart of a mid-afternoonrecovery which transformed the complexion of this match. But to spot the sparingly used Mahendra Nagamootoo (68) and previously horribly out of formRamnaresh Sarwan (51) also applying themselves earnestly in its midst was certainly unexpected. What made the revival even better still was that it came on the heels of another disastrous morning session for the West Indians. The loss of Jimmy Adams (5), Sherwin Campbell (54) and Marlon Samuels (0) in thespace of five deliveries only half an hour into the day – a surrender which saw them slide to a mark of 4/112 in their second innings – was a grave development giventhat as many as 180 runs were required to even make the Australians bat again. And the miserable predicament was then exacerbated when a defending Brian Lara(28) failed to capitalise on an earlier reprieve and lost his wicket to a beautifully pitched ball from off spinner Colin Miller (4/102) half an hour before lunch.Until Sarwan finally lost concentration after close to two-and-a-half hours of unflinching resistance and sparred away from his body at a Glenn McGrath (3/80)delivery, he and Jacobs added eighty-five runs for the sixth wicket in enterprising style. In the process, they ensured not only that the match would enter a fourthinnings but added a genuine touch of spine to the West Indian performance as well. It was difficult to believe that the former had entered this innings with a bare threeruns against his name in total for the series and with his confidence and demeanour at apparent rock bottom. For that sorry record counted for little today; hesurvived a hat-trick ball from Jason Gillespie (2/57) first up, imperiously thumped the second delivery that he faced to the cover boundary, and then barely lookedback.Although well renowned in the Caribbean for his all-round skills, Nagamootoo was also something of a surprise packet. His hand was predominantly attacking – afeature perhaps best exemplified by a number of straight, lofted blows – but contained a nice mixture of defensive shots as well. His maiden Test half-century broughta completely contrasting response to the far more relieved and reserved one offered by Sarwan; an extravagant series of waves of the bat and some fist-pumping forgood measure ensuing as he reached the mark only a few moments before tea.”I always bat like that,” said Nagamootoo. “I never put myself down; when the bad ball comes along, I always (try and) put it away.””In the beginning, it was really tough. I thought that I would just try and bat for as long as I possibly could.””I’ve not really been in and out,” he replied to the suggestion that he has been unluckily overlooked on this tour. “I was injured and have been doing as much as I canto get into the team. One step at a time in practice and I (just try and) take my opportunities when I can get them.”Nagamootoo’s innings might never have blossomed; his own stand of seventy-eight with Jacobs might never have transpired; and the position of the match mighthave been completely different too, if Umpire Darrell Hair had not denied what looked an excellent McGrath lbw appeal against him when the left hander had onlytwo runs on the board. But, in an ironic way, it seemed appropriate that the decision went the West Indians’ way, if for no other reason than it finally permittedJacobs the sort of support that his form has commanded all the way through this tour. It also helped lay the platform for this to develop into by far the best and mostcompetitive day of the series.Ultimately, the trio’s batting helped swell the West Indian second innings tally to a mark of 352. It also had the crowd of 14728 in an appropriately deferential moodby the time that number eleven and 127 Test veteran, Courtney Walsh, entered an Australian arena for the very last time with a bat in his hand. The Australiansformed their own on-field guard of honour to salute the champion too. In the middle of the most intense battle of the summer, it was lovely stuff. That the out-of-sorts Matthew Hayden (5) and Justin Langer (10) each fell inside the first seven overs of Australia’s pursuit of their victory target – to leave the hostslooking a touch vulnerable for once – emphasised the extent of the fightback. Michael Slater (18*) and Mark Waugh (3*) ultimately held firm but each had narrowescapes along the path to stumps. They, like a reinvigorated West Indian team, will be back to do it all again tomorrow.

Liverpool fans mock Timo Werner’s comments

Some Liverpool supporters have been mocking Timo Werner’s claims that he’s happy he didn’t join the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp has been largely successful in the transfer market during his time at Anfield, making a host of sensational signings including Mohamed Salah, Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane, to name just a few.

Liverpool were heavily linked with Werner last summer, with the German seen as someone who could excel in this Reds team. Instead, the 25-year-old opted to join Chelsea, but despite winning the Champions League, he has struggled for form at Stamford Bridge.

Werner scored just six goals in 35 Premier League appearances in his first season in England, with his finishing leaving a lot to be desired at times.

Speaking to Bild [via football.london], the striker said he had no regrets about turning down Liverpool, claiming that “it was the right step and the best decision” to move to Chelsea.

Everton: Kenwright begins Moyes talks

With around 40 head coaches from the football sphere all taking an interest in the Everton job, Farhad Moshiri and co have a big dilemma on their hands.

They never expected to lose Carlo Ancelotti in the way they did but they are back at square one with a lack of clarity on their future.

What’s the word?

Everton have been in talks with Nuno Santo over the last few days but it would appear the Toffees are still considering other suitors.

Bill Kenwright has been keen on bringing David Moyes back to Goodison Park and he’s now progressed in his efforts to do so.

According to Football Insider, Everton chairman Bill Kenwright has opened discussions with Moyes about returning to Merseyside.

An informal approach has been made to the 58-year-old who is keen on becoming the new Everton manager. That being said, he is also content to remain at West Ham.

The best candidate?

Everton have a lengthy list of managers they could look to bring to Goodison.

Former Wolves boss, Nuno, has been at the height of their agenda so far but would be an unconvincing choice.

He may have taken the Old Gold from mid-table obscurity in the second tier to European football but his football wasn’t the most attacking and he wasn’t very flexible when it came to tactical decisions.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-manager-and-transfer-news-ancelotti-moshiri-fonseca-howe-moyes” title= “Read the latest Everton manager and transfer news!”]

Rafa Benitez would also be a gamble from the Toffees hierarchy. He’s won the Champions League and is one of the most highly thought of head coaches in the game but his stock has fallen after a mixed spell at Newcastle and then in China.

Moyes, on the other hand, has proven himself as recently as this season. The Scot took West Ham from relegation candidates to the verge of a place in the Champions League.

The Hammers ultimately fell short of Europe’s top table but it was a stunning season where Moyes’ team looked organised in defence and a threat on the counter.

Gary Neville described him as “exceptional” for the work he’s done this season and with a contract renewal yet to take place at the London Stadium, Everton should be tempting for him.

He knows the club, he knows the senior officials and he is familiar with achieving above expectations.

Everton are desperate for Champions League football and the only manager to give them that in the last two decades is Moyes. For Kenwright and co, he is surely the best candidate.

AND in other news, Brands keen on hiring 46 y/o who Pep dubbed “the best”, he’d be perfect for Everton…

Entenda a briga
