Dragons face stern challenge after leaders reach 202

On a seamer-friendly surface at New Road, Worcestershire Royals must fancy their chances of extending their lead in Division One of the Norwich Union League after posting 202 in their 45 overs against Glamorgan Dragons.

Stephen Lamb04-Aug-2002On a seamer-friendly surface at New Road, Worcestershire Royals must fancy their chances of extending their lead in Division One of the Norwich Union League after posting 202 in their 45 overs against Glamorgan Dragons. After recent rain had given the ground staff scant time to prepare the wicket, Steve James was happy to send the Royals in on winning the toss. Although ten runs came off Andrew Davies in the first over, pickings were never easy on a track that offered constant encouragement to the Dragons’ pace attack.Vikram Solanki, after two attractive boundaries, was caught in the gully cutting at Davies, and Graeme Hick also took a brace of fours before he was taken at first slip driving at Owen Parkin. Mark Wallace then held a skier from Stephen Peters, attempting an horrible paddle to leg. That heralded the best partnership of the innings, between the Norwich Union’s batting star of the season so far, Ben Smith, and Shane Lee, playing his first match since arriving from Australia to replace Andy Bichel as the Royals’ overseas player. Lee (41 off 50 balls) was particularly severe on Robert Croft, the Dragons’ most expensive bowler. It ended when Smith was yorked by Davies for 25 to start a flurry of wickets. Lee was lbw walking across a straight ball from Dale, who took his third wicket when Rhodes failed to clear short fine leg. Batty did well to touch a ball that seamed and bounced, and Mike Powell brilliantly caught Leatherdale at mid-wicket, two-handed diving to his left.At 155 for seven the Dragons were hardly fired up, but Kabir Ali managed 17, including six as Croft toppled into an advertising hoarding while holding a brilliant catch at long-off. Ali was run out, slow to answer a call for a second from Stuart Lampitt, who also made a handy contribution as the Royals eventually squeezed past 200.

Pundit says Lewis Bate could cause damage at Portsmouth

Highly-rated Chelsea youngster Lewis Bate is wanted by several Premier League teams, including West Ham and Leeds, but Football FanCast’s EFL insider believes that a move to Portsmouth would be an interesting fit for the teenager.

Bates, one of the Blues’ biggest Academy prospects, is yet to make a senior appearance for the Stamford Bridge outfit and has been strongly linked away from west London this summer having let his contract run into the final 12 months.

With no experience in men’s football besides the odd appearance in the EFL Trophy for Chelsea’s Under-23s, an EFL loan is likely to be the next move for the talented 18-year-old, regardless of his next permanent club.

There will be a queue of Championship and League One sides interested in Bate, the EFL spy is confident that Bate could cause damage at Fratton Park.

He exclusively told Football FanCast:

“He would be another interesting fit. This midfielder is a clever player with a wide range of passing abilities to hurt teams in League One and above.”

Portsmouth is an excellent platform for any youngster to take the next step in their development.

In Danny Cowley, Pompey have a manager that has previously put his trust into youth, and playing in front of a full house at Fratton Park on a weekly basis would be priceless for any young player.

Lankans wary of South African backlash

Sri Lanka were wary of a South African backlash after Shaun Pollock warned that his team knew what to do in Wednesday’s final of the Morocco Cup

Samiul Hasan21-Aug-2002Sri Lanka were wary of a South African backlash after Shaun Pollock warned that his team knew what to do in Wednesday’s final of the Morocco Cup.”South Africa are a dangerous side and capable of bouncing back. All we need to do is to keep the winning momentum going and give minimum opportunities to them,” skipper Sanath Jayasuriya said.Pollock didn’t elaborate measures required but said that he had identified ways how to peg them down. “The basics are not to lose too many wickets in the first 15 overs and keep Aravinda de Silva in check.”De Silva has scored 157 runs in four matches but most importantly struck match-winning 73 and 77 not out against South Africa that earned him the Man-of-the-Match awards.Sri Lanka, who began with a defeat against Pakistan, won all their remaining three games, including successive victories against South Africa. Nonetheless, Sri Lanka have recently made it a habit of throwing their hard work out of the window in the title match. In April in Sharjah, they twice defeated Pakistan but lost a lopsided final.”Hopefully, we will change things around this time. The conditions are different as compared to Sharjah where it is easier to bowl in the evenings when the floodlights are on,” Sri Lanka coach Dav Whatmore remarked.Sri Lanka will go into the match full of confidence after all their players are in form and on a roll. It has been a pleasing change after a disastrous tour to England where they failed to reach the final of the tri-nation series won by India. It would not be unfair to say that tomorrow’s final will be between two teams that touched rock bottom earlier this year. If Sri Lanka were hammered in England, South Africa found themselves under the whip in their backyard against Australia where they badly lost the one-day and Test series. This match will also provide the two powerhouses of international cricket a platform to judge their strength and weaknesses for September’s ICC Champions Trophy – the buildup for next year’s World Cup.Jayasuriya was happy with his form as he has been instrumental is providing the 1996 world champions a flying start. But he said he needed to get big scores.”The form is good but in big matches, you need to convert good starts into big scores. In that respect, I am not happy because I am getting out in 40s,” he said. The final will be played on the surface on which the two teams locked horns Monday with Sri Lanka becoming the first team to win the match while chasing the target.Teams (from):Sri Lanka: Sanath Jayasuriya (captain), Marvan Atapattu, Kumar Sangakkara, Aravinda de Silva, Mahela Jayawardena, Russel Arnold, Upul Chandana, Chaminda Vaas, Charita Bhuddika Fernando, Muttiah Muralitharan, Dilhara Fernando, Chamila Gamage, Hasantha Fernando, Pulasathi Gunaratne.South Africa: Herschelle Gibbs, Graeme Smith, Gary Kirsten, Jacques Kallis, Boeta Dippenaar, Jonty Rhodes, Nicky Boje, Mark Boucher, Shaun Pollock (captain), Lance Klusener, Allan Donald, Justin Ontong, Roger Telemachus, Makhaya Ntini, Paul Adams.

Wolves preparing Cajuste swoop

An update has emerged on Jens Cajuste, regarding Wolves’ plans to sign him this summer…

What’s the talk?

According to SportExpressen, as relayed by Sport Witness, Wolves are one of the clubs eyeing up a swoop for FC Midtjylland central midfielder Jens Cajuste this summer, alongside Premier League rivals Leeds and Crystal Palace.

The report claims that all three teams are preparing bids for the midfield enforcer and interest in his services ARE expected to intensify in the coming weeks.

The Northern Echo have also reported that Newcastle have dropped out of the race, due to his £13m valuation.

Neves replacement

Ruben Neves is being touted with both Manchester United and Arsenal this week, which could mean that Bruno Lage will need to replace the Portuguese international ahead of next season. This could tie in with the club’s pursuit of Cajuste as the Midtjylland man may be viewed as his replacement.

The Swedish international is three years younger than Neves and plays a similar role in the midfield.

Their statistics match up well against each other to back up this point. Last season, their pass success, long pass accuracy, tackles made, duels won, take-on success rate and clearances were all similar according to Opta (viaSquwka’s comparison matrix).

Following the reports of interest from Elland Road, Leeds Live journalist Ed Mackey said of him: “Cajuste is an all-action midfielder whose attributes look ready-made for Premier League football. Tough tackling, close control and accurate passing are seen as his main strengths but he offers everything you would want in a player of his position.

“Standing at 6 foot 2, he is dominant both in the air and on the surface which would provide vital stability in the middle of the park for Leeds. The 21-year-old also enjoys exhibiting his flair with a number of fancy but effective touches and passes being a particular stand-out feature of his overall game.”

This suggests that, if Neves is sold, Cajuste could be an excellent replacement for the former Porto captain. Hopefully, Wolves’ bid is enough to convince the Danish side to part ways with the midfielder and that they can ensure Palace and Leeds do not sneak in ahead of them to beat them to his signature.

At the age of 21, he also has plenty of room to develop and improve. Lage could work with him on the training pitch to fulfil his potential and possibly replicate or even exceed the heights Neves has managed to reach at The Molineux in recent years.

– Ele estava me agarrando, tentei me desvencilhar dele e acabou pegando no rosto dele. E, ali, é critério do árbitro e ele me expulsou – afirmou.

Ball: Everton need Kalidou Koulibaly deal to improve quality

Former Everton defender Michael Ball believes that Kalidou Koulibaly quality is much needed at Goodison Park.

The Napoli centre-half has been linked with a move to the Premier League in the past, with Manchester City one of the clubs who were interested in signing him last summer.

And it appears that Koulibaly is on Rafa Benitez’ wish list this summer, with Calciomercato (via the Liverpool Echo) reporting the Toffees’ interest in the highly rated defender.

On the transfer rumours, Ball told FFC: “Everton do have quite a lot of centre-backs, but I feel his quality is much needed. The defensive side of Everton last season was pretty good at times, before the last game of the season the drubbing from Man City hurt them quite badly on the goal difference situation.”

Napoli manager Luciano Spalletti obviously rates the defender highly and doesn’t want him to vacate the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium this summer, as Goal reported that Spalletti said in his press conference that “to keep him, I will chain myself somewhere”.

Rafa Benitez has already dipped his toes in the transfer market this summer acquiring both Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray, as well as Asmir Begovic, but if the Merseyside outfit are to land Koulibaly, they are going to have to break their transfer record for the defender.

This is because journalist Fabrizio Romano told the Don Robbie YouTube channel: “I see some reports from Italy saying €40m/€45m, I’m told that it’s more than this. It’s far more than this, around €70m, something like this to sign Koulibaly, so it won’t be so easy.”
