Pundit Liam Delap move to West Brom would suit all parties

Carlton Palmer reckons that West Brom signing Manchester City youngster Liam Delap is a move that would suit all parties.

The teenager, son of former long throw specialist Rory Delap, has made three first-team outings for City, but has caught the eye of most of the Championship following his exhilarating form in Premier League 2.

Delap, who netted on his senior debut in the EFL Cup for Pep Guardiola’s men, struck 24 times in 20 appearances for City’s Under-23s last term, including three hat-tricks and four braces.

And according to The Express and Star, West Brom are the latest second-tier outfit to register their interest in the 18-year-old, even though he’s currently injured and hasn’t been involved in either of City’s two competitive fixtures this season.

But with Delap desperate for regular first-team football, something that’s unlikely to happen at City, Palmer believes a switch to the Hawthorns would benefit the youngster.

He exclusively told Football FanCast:

“Of course, because he’s a young player. And I have said young players need to play first-team football.

“So yeah, go out and play first-team football, get experience, be in the first-team dressing room – and it’s a benefit for all parties.”

Wet outfield threatens play on third day

The routine overnight shower has washed out the final day of the three-day fixture at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, with only 23.1 overs being bowled

The Bulletin by Kanishkaa Balachandran in Hyderabad11-Sep-2008
ScorecardThe routine overnight shower has washed out the final day of the three-day fixture at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, with only 23.1 overs being bowled. The umpires had scheduled an inspection of the pitch at 12.30pm, but the scene was very similar to yesterday when play was called off without a ball being bowled.Things couldn’t have gotten any worse for the teams or the groundstaff. While the rain kept away through the daylight hours for the first couple of days, it came pelting down shortly after 11.00am today. The outfield was completely waterlogged, forcing the umpires to call off play without hesitation. One of the Australian players splashed around in one of the puddles, keeping his team-mates and the few onlookers in splits. On a more serious note, the weather patterns over the last few days could jeopardise the start of the one-day tri-series, with three back-to-back games starting Monday. The teams then head to Chennai for the remainder of the series.

BCCI secretary justifies move to pay the selectors

N Srinivasan has said the recent move to have a paid selection panel will ensure complete accountability to the board

N Srinivasan, the newly appointed secretary of the BCCI, has said the recent move to have a paid selection panel – the first time in the board’s history – will ensure complete accountability to the board. Srinivasan, formerly the board’s treasurer, was also appointed the convener of selectors and attended the meeting in Mumbai on Wednesday to pick the Indian squad for the first two Tests against Australia.”You now have a professional selection committee that is paid and therefore, completely accountable to the board,” Srinivasan told the . “There is a view that the BCCI will therefore, now have a greater hold over the selectors.”The idea behind this was that the selectors spend so much time for the board, that they should be reimbursed.”The members of the new panel, headed by the former Indian opener Kris Srikkanth, will be paid Rs 25 lakh (US$53,625) per year.Srinivasan also said the board will stress on improving cricket facilities across the country and that the state associations were being encouraged to spend more on improving infrastructure.”An opportunity, perhaps, is to make facilities more user-friendly,” he said. “We would like to improve facilities, increase the number of academies and take the game to the rural parts of the country in a more complete fashion. There are new stadia coming up in Hyderabad, Nagpur, Orissa. We will see the creation of more and more facilities for cricket.”When asked whether the BCCI would consider going public, he said: “This is not a corporate entity. We are an organisation for the development of the game. That’s the way we see ourselves.”

Massey let Wigan down against Bolton

Wigan came out on top against Bolton in the League Cup on Tuesday night to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to five games.

The Latics have now not lost a competitive match since the opening day of the campaign against Sunderland.

Leam Richardson’s side were held to a 0-0 draw in 90 minutes by Bolton before ultimately beating them on penalties, with goalkeeper Jamie Jones even stepping up to smash one into the back of the net before Nathan Delfouneso’s miss sealed the win.

Despite progressing through to the third round, there were some negatives to take out of the match. One player, in particular, failed to take his opportunity to impress and let Richardson down: Gavin Massey.

The 28-year-old winger was handed a start on the right of the attacking quartet and failed to prove that he has what it takes to be a regular starter for the club.

This was a huge chance for him to put in a top-class display and force his way into Richardson’s plans for the rest of the season. He is yet to start a League One match this term, with three substitute cameos, and that appears unlikely to change any time soon on the evidence of Tuesday’s game.

Per SofaScore, he lost 50% of his duels and gave possession away 13 times from 44 touches of the ball. This shows that he was not strong enough on and off the ball to retain, or win back, possession for Wigan on the right flank, which is a worrying sign.

Along with his lack of composure in duels, Massey struggled to offer a consistent attacking outlet on the wing. In 90 minutes on the pitch, he failed to create a single chance and managed one shot whilst also failing with both of his attempted crosses and two of his three long balls.

He did not make an impact defensively or offensively for Wigan, letting Richardson – who offered him the opportunity to stake a claim for his place in the side – down.

It could be a while before the head coach decides that he deserves another start.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Emi Martinez and Emi Buendia update

They will both miss the Villains’ trip to Stamford Bridge on 11 September due to quarantine, before being available for selection again on 18 September at home to Everton.

In light of this news, plenty of Aston Villa fans took to Twitter to vent their fury at the duo’s impending absence for the trip to west London.

Laxman puzzled by Australia's defensive approach

Batsman talks of the mental approach of the Australians and answers his critics over the doubts raised about his ability before the series

Almost every player to have performed well for India this series has come out and taunted Australia’s defensive approach. VVS Laxman, after having scored a quick double-century to set the game nicely for India, followed the trend. But Laxman’s words like his batting, were subtle yet more hard-hitting. “The total approach has been defensive right from the start of the series,” Laxman said. “You see the captain, saying that they are the underdogs for the series, that puts them in a defensive mode.”Whereas our captain Anil [Kumble], despite the criticism he’s been facing, he’s very, very positive in the way he’s talking about his team. And Ricky [Ponting] is talking about the Indian team rather than his own team. They’re very defensive in the way they’re approaching their cricket.”He went ahead, and said it’s not the lack of resources with this current Australian team that has made them defensive. “They’ve got the resources,” Laxman said. “Except for Adam Gilchrist, the team doesn’t look different from what we played in Australia when they beat us 2-1. I think it’s just that mental approach. I’m not sure why they’ve been defensive in the way they’ve approached the series.”Coming from a man who respects and gives credit to Australia’s aggressive attitude for his superlative record against them, this sledge would mean a lot. And it didn’t come in a taunting tone, like Zaheer Khan’s. did, or in a slightly arrogant one, like Gautam Gambhir’s.While he was at it, he dealt his detractors the same treatment too. “Firstly, I think the doubting Thomases have either been in the media, or people outside the team, unfortunately,” Laxman said when asked whether he felt he is the person always picked for harsh scrutiny and criticism. “There’s no talk like that in the team and the management. The selectors always gave me, and each and every player in the team, the confidence.”However, Laxman said such stories in the media only worked to the team’s advantage. “Unfortunately, all the stories that built up before the Test series were very negative and we took it in a positive way. I think the team got together, we had a very intense camp in Bangalore. I think because of all the negativity in the media, the team got together and that’s showing in our performance.”The seniors have never faced undue pressure to retire, Laxman said. “The players don’t really think [about all that] because all the players who play for the country are responsible, they know the value of their responsibility to the country and they know that when they stop contributing to the team, they will take decisions. Everyone is responsible and mature enough to take these decisions.”People were deciding on behalf of the cricketers about when they should retire. Every player knows their responsibility. So yes, it definitely hurts. We’re not asking anyone to over-respect us, but we don’t want people to degrade our contribution to Indian cricket.”
