Given a fair crack of the whip at Stamford Bridge?

Poor old…or should that be young AVB. On Sunday he joined the millions of mid-thirty year olds in the dole queue after being jettisoned from the Chelsea managers office after just eight months in charge. Barely enough time to let the paint dry and wear in the new desk chair. Lets be honest we could all hear the sound of Roman Abramovich’s axe sharpening after Gareth McAuley’s effectively put the 34-year-olds head on the Stamford Bridge chopping block. Less that 24-hours after the defeat at West Brom – a team Chelsea had beaten in 11 straight Premier League games – the Russian executioner added another head to his rapidly growing collection. Villas-Boas was dismissed after only eight months and 40-games in charge at Stamford Bridge.

The Porto native had gone the same way as five of his predecessors, which included the most successful manager in the clubs history, a World Cup champion and a four-time European/Champions League winner. Abramovich’s reputation as a ruthless terminator remains intact. A man hellbent on securing the continents premier piece of silverware yet unwilling to afford the luxury of time to anyone who dares take up the Chelsea reins. Villas-Boas was given 226 days to turn that dream into reality. Regrettably for him poor performances on the pitch and a split in the dressing room forced Abramovich’s hand after weeks of pondering. It’ll be yet another hefty payout for the billionaire Russian on top of the £13.3 million he splashed out on the Portuguese coach back in July. Many thought that figure and the prospect of incurring a huge loss on – the now affectionally know – AVB would see the Blues owner persist with him. But as we’ve come to expect with Abramovich the only method in his repair book is to sacrifice the man in the dugout.

Once again Chelsea are back to square one leaving the neutrals deliberating over whether AVB was given a fair crack of the whip.

It was always going to be tough for him. The minute his name was mentioned he was immediately compared to former boss Jose Mourinho. His four year spell in West London saw the Blues prosper winning two league titles, two League Cups and an FA Cup. Inevitably the now Real Madrid boss fell out with Abramovich and eventually bit the Russian’s bullet. But the comparisons were already set in stone before AVB had even signed on the dotted line. Both managers had enjoyed fruitful periods in charge at Porto winning Primeira Liga and a European trophy in the same season. As soon as a move to Chelsea came to light the expectation levels escalated to the levels set by the Special One prior to his departure in late 2007. His popularity with players and fans was always going to tough to match for anyone taking up the manager’s position.

[ad_pod id=’dfp-mpu’ align=’right’]

As expected he never managed to reach those heights during his brief tenure although he was never given a chance to ride a transitional period after replacing Carlo Ancelotti at the helm. It was always going to be a struggle for AVB to exert control and authority over a dressing room containing players of a similar age. It’s been well documented in the national press that senior players like Frank Lampard and John Terry were unhappy with their manager in the months leading up to his sacking. There was no way they would allow some mid-thirties foreigner to break up a side that had played it’s part in Chelsea’s most affluent era. A juvenile refusal to buy into AVB’s methods that had brought him success in Portugal saw the club falter on the pitch. Their title challenge extinguished before February and on the verge of a Champions League knockout. They even opposed his micro-management eventually becoming irritated by the constant time keeping he carried out. Abramovich held  them all directly accountable for his untimely demise. Sadly the trials that faced him from the offset all pointed to a scenario like this playing out.

You have to admire the ferocious dedication he put into the task in hand trying to answer every question asked by the media and sometimes sleeping in his office at the training ground. His professionalism was second to none refusing to even engage in personal relationships with players and staff. Regrettably he failed to notice how alienated the two groups had become from him before it was too late. He became obsessed with pleasing Abramovich ultimately failing to notice the division in a hostile dressing room that needed repairing. It’s an issue he’ll need to closely address in his next position. The trials and tribulations of managing Chelsea football club proved too heavy for such a young man to carry alone on his shoulders. A dressing room crowded with egotistical rebels was always going to be difficult to govern for a man of AVB’s tender years. But you have to give him praise for his tenacity and resolve even when the early battle lines were drawn by the players. There is no doubt he’ll land on his feet and eventually come back to bite those who stabbed him in the back.

As for Chelsea, where and who do they turn to next? The manager’s position has become a poisoned chalice during Abramovich’s reign and it will take more of the Russian’s millions to tempt anyone into filling one of football’s toughest assignments. Whoever said you could buy success?

Which young player has shone the brightest at Swindon this season?

With Swindon sitting pretty at the top of League Two you could easily say it has been a brilliant season for the Robins and one of the major factors behind our success this season has been the young players who have impressed after being introduced to the first team.

As this superb season draws to its close now comes the almost impossible task to select just one.  Let’s have look at some of the main candidates for the award.

1.Wesley Foderingham

The 21-year-old goalkeeper has firmly established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet after a fabulous season in goal, becoming a fan favourite, making vital saves that have put us top of the table. When he signed on loan from Crystal Palace in October no-one had really heard of the young shot stopper but after keeping five clean sheets in his first five matches Robins fans took a real shine to him. When January rolled around I expected an extension to his loan but I was delighted when we managed to sign him a permanent deal. With 14 clean sheets, he has easily been the best signing we made in January, with a particularly favourite being his penalty save against Cheltenham in a top-of-the-table clash.

2. Callum Kennedy

The young left-back was a solid first teamer at the beginning of the season but he lost his place after a few weeks with Allessandro Cibocchi taking the reins on the left side of defence. That is how it stayed until he was recalled for the FA Cup match against Huddersfield where he put in, arguably, his best performance of the season. Until recently he has been in and out of the first team but when called upon he has been a very reliable left back. With the experienced Jay McEvely on loan from Barnsley and the news that Jay is likely to sign for us in the summer, it could signal less chances in the starting line-up for Callum. However he deserves his selection after an impressive season.

3.Billy Bodin

I have chosen the young forward as even though he has impressed away from the County Ground.  He spent most of the earlier part of the season on-loan at Torquay but when he returned for a few weeks he was brilliant even scoring against Southend and Crawley which was a proud moment for the Swindon-born forward with his being Paul Bodin being a Swindon legend and the youth coach at Swindon. He is currently spending the rest of the season at Crewe but having played the start and the middle of the season at Swindon he qualifies and deservedly so after his six goals which is a great return for any in their first season in the football league.

Young player of the season for me goes to Billy Bodin, as even though he hasn’t been in the team week in and week out, he has developed the most and has become the striker all Swindon fans wanted him to become while also racking up a fair few goals this season. He tries his best in every game and has done enough to earn him a new contract at the end of the season unless, of course, Torquay or Crewe try and pry him away from us but I’m sure if he is offered a contract by Di Canio he will take it. If Billy continues to work hard and improve he will go down to be a Swindon legend like his dad and could well have a goal scoring record that better than that of Charlie Austin or Simon Cox. For the present I don’t think Billy would look out of place in a top League One club but for now playing for Torquay and Crewe has helped him as a player and hopefully young Billy will be ready to be involved in the squad more next season in League One.

Caption Competition: The End of the Road at The Etihad

Manchester City won the 2011/12 Premier League title at The Etihad last weekend, but it was far from straightforward against QPR.

Not only did Man City come from behind to beat Queens Park Rangers, but they also came up against a certain Joey Barton.

It’s fair to say that Barton lost it in the second half, as first he elbowed Carlos Tevez, then he kicked Sergio Aguero and as he left the pitch he tried to square up to Manchester City’s captain Vincent Kompany.

It wasn’t Barton’s finest hour and he damaged his chequered reputation even further with his comments towards Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker on Twitter.

Here is Barton squaring up to Kompany, but what is being said between the two?

Tottenham set £9m asking price

Tottenham are locked in negotiations with Ajax as they try to agree a fee to sign defender Jan Vertonghen, according to The Daily Mail.

The Belgium international is highly-rated, and after leading the Amsterdam Arena side to back-to-back titles is ready to leave the Eredivisie for a bigger club.

With one year left on his contract Spurs are thought to have offered £7 million, but the Dutch champions are holding out for £9 million for their captain.

Vertonghen and his agent Nakhli Mustapha were in attendance at White Hart Lane on Sunday to witness Spurs seal fourth place with a 2-0 win over Fulham, and a deal to bring the centre half to north London is thought be close if the teams can agree a fee.

Arsenal are also thought to be interested in Vertonghen, who looks Premier League bound this summer.

England vs Italy – The Key Battles That Matter For Hodgson

So, here we are. Twenty-four hours away from the European Championships quarter final against Italy who, as demonstrated in their group, have been the most unpredictable team so far. Pretty much the only team to have radically tinkered with their formation Italy have match-winning assets in every area of their team. Yet they’re also one of the weakest Italy sides for a generation. The same, however, could be said of England.

In a recent press conference Gianluigi Buffon, Italy’s 34 year old captain said of tomorrow’s game: “I think it is a very balanced game against England, totally equal.”

That the game is a fair match up is a contentious issue. Italy seem to posses more individual talent yet the organisation Hodgson has instilled in this England team has proved it can stand up to strong attacking opposition. Whether Cesare Prandelli will opt for the 3-5-2 as he did against Spain and Croatia or the 4-4-2 as he did against Ireland remains to be seen. What we do know is that the match will be won or lost in a number of battles going on around the pitch.

As Italy’s captain said: “On paper against England it is 50/50 who will win. It will be a game where little episodes will make the difference.”

So what are the key battles for England to overcome  if the Three Lions are to take their place in the semi finals of Euro 2012?

Wayne Rooney vs. Andrea Pirlo

Easily the most important match up of the game. Rooney is, on his day, England’s most dangerous player whilst Pirlo totally controls the game for Italy. Pirlo will sit in between the defence and midfield spraying passes out to the rest of the team, controlling the tempo of the game and generally trying to snub out attacks. Rooney will be sitting in the hole between midfield and attack trying to do a not dissimilar playmaking role from the number 10 position.

The battle between these two will not be an ordinary ‘attacker vs. defensive midfielder’ match up as Pirlo will have to worry about Rooney closing him down as much as Wayne will have to worry about stifling Pirlo’s attacking threat.

Ultimately the best way for both players to do so is make no mistakes in possession. The more time either player has to spend worrying about the other’s attacking threat the less chance they have on concentrating on their own job. One thing England fans can be certain of is that if Rooney’s touch and use of the ball does not improve from the Ukraine game then we will be in for a difficult evening.

Joleon Lescott vs. Mario Balotelli

It remains to be seen whether or not Balotelli will start against England. You get the feeling that Prandelli would like to select the enigmatic Manchester City man but may be worried about his temperament, especially against England.

Nevertheless, should he start then Joleon Lescott will surely be the man charged with keeping tabs on Mario. Both know each other’s strengths and weaknesses from their time together at City and, as Ibrahimovic proved against Terry in our Group game, the Chelsea captain no longer has the required pace to deal with quick, powerful forwards.

Whatever friendship Lescott and Balotelli may have is totally irrelevant. It might sound like underhand tactics but England should be looking to exploit their knowledge of Balotelli’s quick temper and, often poor, judgment.

Ashley Young vs. Christian Maggio

Whether Italy play 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 Young and Maggio will inevitably end up facing each other. When Italy play a three man defence Maggio is used as a right midfielder/wing back and when they play four at the back he is the full back.

Both Young and Maggio’s key strengths are revealed when they are higher up the pitch and it is an area that England can look to exploit. Young’s cross against Ukraine, which Rooney missed, demonstrated why he is in the team. If he produces similar crosses tomorrow don’t expect them to be missed.

However it will not be plain sailing for Young how needs to recognise that Maggio will be looking to pen him back by marauding forward himself. Moreover, with Ashley Cole pushing forward as well England must ensure they do not underestimate Maggio’s threat and leave themselves exposed.

Steven Gerrard vs. Daniele De Rossi

The Italian midfielder has expressed his delight at the prospect of coming up against England’s captain on Sunday. De Rossi is, after all, the Italian version of Gerrard. Admittedly he is slightly more defensive than Gerrard but so is Italian football as a whole. De Rossi said himself that he would like to attack more and in this game he will undoubtedly see more of the ball than England’s captain. The stereotypes of each player will be reversed on Sunday. Gerrard will play the more defensive role and will have to choose his moments to break forward extremely wisely.

Each player will be waiting for the other to wander out of position before venturing forward with any real purpose, let’s hope that Gerrard is the more disciplined of the two tomorrow night.

So these are the four key areas that I have identified that really matter for Roy Hodgson ahead of the game; however our friends at Samsung are curious to know what you the fans believe will ‘matter most’, whether it be a Rooney cameo, or a Joe Hart master class – let the good people of Samsung know and who knows your entry may win you a whole host of goodies.

Prandelli feels defeat will help Balotelli learn

Italy boss Cesare Prandelli has stated that he feels his side’s defeat to Spain in the European Championships final will help temperamental Mario Balotelli learn in the long run.

The Azzurri were put to the sword 4-0 by a Spanish masterclass, whilst Balotelli remained largely ineffective during a one-sided game.

The Manchester City forward stormed straight down the tunnel at the final whistle, brushing off the attempts of Italian officials to keep him on the pitch, before later returning to collect his runners-up medal.

Despite the act of petulance from the at-times troubled striker, Prandelli feels that Balotelli will learn that losing is a part of the game.

“I told Mario that these are experiences you have to deal with and have to accept,” the Italy tactician told reporters after the game, translated to English by Sky Sports.

“You have to hold your hands up and say the opponents were better, accept defeat.

“But you also have to make sure this helps you going forward and you can grow from the experience.

“This has happened to a number of players, and will happen again, but this is what sport is all about,” he admitted.

Prandelli went on to praise the efforts of his team, but feels that Spain’s extra recuperation time could have played a part in the result.

“You could tell right away that they were fresher physically. We didn’t have time to recuperate, especially against players like these. It became very, very difficult indeed to come back from 2-0 down.

“We came up against a terrific side. They’re world champions. Obviously, when you go down to 10 men, the game’s over.

“Anyway, it has been a sensational tournament and I pay my compliments to my players.

“We must grow and arrive at these important competitions with the right space during and after the Italian championship,” he concluded.

Vincent Kompany signs new six-year City deal

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has signed a new six-year contract with the Premier League champions.

The Belgium international skippered the Etihad Stadium side to their first top-flight title in 44 years last term, and is delighted to have extended his time at the club.

“For me if you are good somewhere then there is no reason to look elsewhere,” he told the club’s official website.

“Man City as a project is not just a project of the owners or the people employed by the club; it is also my project.

“I have been here since the beginning and I have seen everything at the club change inside and out.

“I have the feeling that I have contributed to it too. It is good to know that I can be at City for another six years. It is a compliment that the club feels so highly of me.

“Hopefully in the future I will have a bigger impact than I already have. I am good here. The fans have given me an incredible reception which is one of the main reasons that I signed this new deal.

“My family is happy and there are so many more trophies to win at this club that is why it makes it so special.

“I take it with great pride that I have been chosen to be captain and lead this team. Especially in England, more than other competitions, being the captain has got a lot more responsibility involved with it.

“I thrive on responsibility the more I get the more I perform. I am at the right club because I have built something here already.

“I have never denied that this can sometimes be the hardest team in the league of which to be captain, but like I said I am all about responsibility and challenge.

“This Man City project was probably one of the most difficult projects in Europe to be part of and so far we have all done a good job even though a lot of people said it wasn’t going to happen so quickly.

“I like the kind of characters that we have in our team. I like the challenges we have ahead of us. Now is the time to build the culture of winning we are in the right time; we are in the right moment.

“We have laid the foundations and now we want to win more. If we do that then we can be one of the most successful clubs for a long time to come and that is the aim.

“I can’t wait to get started again. I am really excited about the season ahead,” he admitted.

Wayne Rooney out for a month

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney suffered a gash to his upper leg and looks set to miss four weeks of football that will include two World Cup qualifiers for England.

Rooney suffered the nasty injury shortly after coming on as a substitute as United picked up their first three points of the season in a narrow win at home to Fulham.

After being left out of the staring XI, with Robin van Persie taking his place, Rooney came on only to be heading down the tunnel shortly afterwards following a collision with Fulham’s Hugo Rodallega that left the England striker needing hospital treatment.

“It is a very bad cut,” Ferguson told the Daily Mirror. “He went straight to hospital. It looks like he will be out for four weeks. It’s a bad one.”

Rooney will now miss key games for United, but also two vital World Cup qualifiers for England against Moldova and Ukraine where Hodgson will have to select from his limited attacking options.

Javier Hernandez vows to fight for United place

Javier Hernandez has stated that he is willing to fight for a place in the Manchester United first team, despite the summer arrivals of Shinji Kagawa and Robin van Persie.

The Mexico international now finds himself down Sir Alex Ferguson’s pecking list, but the Central American is ready to compete.

“The great thing about this club is you know you will get opportunities because we play so many games in different tournaments,” The Telegraph report Hernandez as saying.

“There is competition for places, but you always have that. I had that in youth teams when I was growing up and we have it here now because you need a big squad of players.

“There are only 11 places each week and you need to do your best to get one of those places, but it’s great to have that competition because it means every player will have to raise the level of their game.

“The gaffer has the decisions to make, but for me, I just focus on doing my best every day in training and in every game so I can help my team-mates get closer to achieving our targets of winning the league and all the competitions we play in.

“I think in life you never stop learning, no matter what age you are. I try to learn from all my team-mates, but obviously it’s great to watch the other strikers in particular.

“They have all helped me a lot and I know I will learn a lot off Robin because he is a world-class striker who has a lot to give to the team and a lot to teach us all,” he concluded.

Hillsborough families hope truth will finally come to light this Wednesday

23 years after 96 football fans lost their life, the city of Liverpool hopes the truth will finally come out this week reports The Guardian.

A panel of experts, chaired by the Bishop of Liverpool James Jones, have spent the last 20 months examining 450,000 internal documents relating to that tragic day on April 15 1989.

On Wednesday, the panel will aim to deliver a definitive narrative of the events that took place at the Sheffield stadium during the 1989 FA Cup semi-final in which 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives.

Sources say it will be ‘in favour’ of the families and finally illustrate in detail the ‘cover up’ orchestrated by South Yorkshire police as they attempted to blame the fans for their own failings.

The city is praying this week will finally expose the lies that saw Liverpool fans blamed for the incident, and portrayed as drunk, unruly and ticketless by the police and then newspaper The Sun who ran an article claiming Liverpool fan’s stole from and urinated on the dead under the headline ‘The Truth’.

For the first time, details of what happened after 3.15pm on the day of the tragedy will be revealed. It is understood these details will expose the chaotic response from the emergency services, and a clearer picture of how many more lives could of been saved will emerge.

Margaret Aspinall, who lost her son James in the tragedy says the campaign by those culpable to hide the truth has deepened the grief and made it impossible for those affected to move on.

She said: “It’s not just the survivors, we have to clear their names [the dead] … I get angry when I think they have allowed the families to suffer for 23 years, to allow the survivors to go through torture knowing it was a cover-up.”

There has still been no apology from the government or the police, despite Lord Justice Taylor’s official enquiry in 1989, which revealed police failings caused the tragedy.

“Liverpool has always been a militant town, but the attitude to Hillsborough destroyed any trust in the government. It can never be repaired,” says Kenny Derbyshire, a survivor of the tragedy.

Derbyshire explained how the sense of injustice has left so many unable to draw any sort of closure. The Hillsborough Justice Campaign knows of at least six survivors who have taken their own lives, unable to come to terms with the incident and the official response it drew. Only two weeks ago one survivor threw himself under a train.

“There a lot of walking wounded out there, broken marriages, people turning to drink,” says Derbyshire, 46. “Thousands remain traumatised. To many it feels like it happened yesterday.”

If – as expected – the verdict reveals errors made by the police and other public bodies there will be an overwhelming demand for a fresh inquest, with the coroners verdict of accidental death being void.

The government could lodge an application to the high court for a fresh round of inquests, with attorney general Dominic Grieve promising to consider this weeks evidence and make a decision “as quickly as I can.”

Michael Mansfield, QC, will be offering free legal advice to the families this Wednesday following the release of the documents. The lawyer who specialises in miscarraiges of justice has said: “It was a false story, it’s time to put it to bed.”
