Big-match Pietersen has doubts to settle

Kevin Pietersen’s performances against South Africa were always going to be analysed in great depth – it has been the story of his career – but his poor returns in Cape Town have turned the spotlight squarely on him ahead of the series decider at the Wanderers.Pietersen bagged scores of 0 and 6 at Newlands and it was the manner of his dismissals that raised eyebrows. In both innings he was out-thought by Dale Steyn; in the first innings he punched a full delivery back to the bowler and in the second was trapped lbw whipping across a straight ball.”He won’t be happy with what happened in Cape Town,” Andrew Strauss said. “I suppose it was one of the performances that he will be least happy about so far in his career but I am not unhappy with the way he has been playing.”However, Pietersen has played an important innings in this series. Without his 81 at Centurion England would have lost that Test, although the effort was overshadowed by the run out mix-up with Jonathan Trott that brought his downfall. Then he was well-set on 31 at Durban before falling lbw to Paul Harris sweeping a very full delivery. But away from purely his dismissals, a spark has also been missing; that flash of brilliance that is the stand-out feature of his game.It may all have a simple explanation. He could just be out of form. Credit has to go to South Africa, especially the way they bowled at him in Cape Town, and they have followed the widely accepted view that full and straight is the way to attack Pietersen early on. However, that may also be too simple. There’s the impact of his time out of the game following surgery and a lingering suggestion that losing the captaincy still hurts him.Paul Collingwood suggested he was a victim of his own success in that people always expect match-winning displays, but if he aspires to greatness those will be the demands placed on him. This is by no a means a time to panic about Pietersen – both Strauss and Trott have also managed just a single half century each – but it will be fascinating to watch his response at the Wanderers. He is a big-game player, and games don’t come much bigger.”At Centurion I thought he batted exceptionally well and that’s only two Tests ago,” Strauss said. “He is a man for the big occasion, he has obvious class and quality and that does not change over course of two games.”Maybe people are reading too much into it,” he added. “If he had scored heavily in the Ashes and had a couple of quiet games here nothing would have been said but because he has been out quite a long time it is easy to focus on those quiet games.”I don’t think he is out of form by any means, I think his attitude and the way he has gone about his business has been exactly as it normally is. He will come back and score runs very soon, whether it will be here or not I don’t know but I have every confidence he will be putting in big performances for England in the near future.”Graeme Smith said he wasn’t losing any sleep over the prospect of a return to form by Pietersen, which suggests the South Africans feel they have a measure of him, but Jacques Kallis, a player who has achieved the rank of greatness, is well aware of his potential.”He’s a quality player so it’s only a matter of time before he comes right but hopefully it’s not in the next one,” Kallis said. “We’ve had a few plans against him which have worked and hopefully that will continue. We’ve done well to keep him quiet, but you don’t become a bad player overnight.”England have shown they can win, either with Pietersen not in the side, or not on top form, and if they secure a series victory at the Wanderers without a major contribution it will be a mark of the team’s strength. However, they would be a better team with Pietersen firing and until he captures the form that thrilled audiences the questions won’t go away.

Gardner-Hickman must start against Cardiff

Taylor Gardner-Hickman has been having quite a week after celebrating his 20th birthday as well as signing a new contract with West Brom on the same day.

The Albion academy graduate secured a four-and-a-half year deal with the club after making a great impression on Valerien Ismael and the West Brom fans.

Speaking after signing his contract, Gardner-Hickman said: “I’m absolutely delighted. This is my boyhood club. I’ve been here since I was seven and to finally achieve a long-term contract is a dream come true.

“I’ve been working really hard and I was hoping that one day my chance would come. Thankfully it came and I’ve been fortunate enough to be around the squad for a while now.”

The youngster has displayed some impressive performances for the Baggies’ first team this season, especially in the game against Reading a few weeks ago, where SofaScore gave him the highest player rating (8.3) of anyone in Ismael’s side.

According to the website, in that match alone, Gardner-Hickman recorded an 89% pass accuracy, with more touches on the ball than any other midfielder, and won 11 out of his 17 duels.

Ismael has been one of the first to sing the youngster’s praises, calling him “fearless” after his outstanding contribution whilst stepping up to the first team as he said: “He represents exactly what we want to see from young players. He’s hungry, he has desire, he’s fearless. He also has a lot of quality.

“After Dara O’Shea, I think he is the second one with the same profile and I’m delighted to be able to work with him in the years to come.”

Albion will take on their first fixture of 2022 tomorrow against Cardiff City at The Hawthorns, and we’re sure the homegrown talent will be eager to come in for his first start since that impressive outing against Reading three weeks ago.

It could be the perfect opportunity for Gardner-Hickman to get stuck into the second half of the season, and if he gets his chance this weekend, he could be a game-changer from full-back with his all-action play. Indeed, Albion have failed to win or even score since his last start for the club.

The club believe he has what it takes to succeed by offering him a new contract in recent days; now it’s over to Ismael to place his trust in the 20-year-old and back up the aforementioned glowing praise.

West Ham backed to sign Gabigol

West Ham could sign Flamengo striker Gabigol in an exciting initial loan deal in the January transfer window, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Gabigol shines in Brazil

The 25-year-old has enjoyed a hugely impressive career in his homeland of Brazil, being lauded by one of his country’s all-time great players, Zico, who claimed the striker has ‘everything to be the greatest striker in Flamengo’s history’.

Gabigol has scored 84 goals in just 124 appearances for Flamengo, not to mention netting five times in 17 caps for Brazil.

West Ham have been linked with an audacious January move for the striker with Sky Sports even claiming talks have started, and a fresh update has now emerged regarding their pursuit of him.

The Latest: Journalist backs move

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke hinted at a potential temporary move then becoming permanent in the summer:

“I’m sure they’re talking to Flamengo to see if they could try and work out a deal where it’s an initial loan with an obligation to buy.”

The Verdict: Hugely exciting target

Gabigol could feel like a significant signing for the Hammers, considering his stature in the game and his aforementioned success at Flamengo.

Granted, he has already had two failed spells in Europe – he scored just one goal apiece during short stints at Inter Milan and Benfica – but he has since matured as a player and could be ready for a new challenge.

It is vital that West Ham sign someone to ease the burden on Michail Antonio between now and January, ensuring genuine top-four and Europa League challenges are mounted.

In other news, some West Ham fans are excited about another transfer claim. Read more here.

Warriors keep on winning

A summary of the third week of Standard Bank Pro20 games

Firdose Moonda20-Feb-2010Another week, another Warriors victory. The Eastern Cape side have maintained their unbeaten run in this season’s Pro20 competition and secured a home semi-final by beating the Cobras in Cape Town. The Warriors have four victories under their belts, while no other team from the chasing pack has managed to record more than two wins.At the opposite end of the table lie the Dolphins, who have lost all of their group stage matches and look as though they may bring some light to their dark days in their match against the Cobras. The Cape side slumped to 44 for 5 in the 12th over before Justin Kemp smashed 59 off 45 balls. He was the only notable contributor to the batting as Kyle Nipper (2 for 10) and Johann Louw (2 for 18) kept the Cobras to 116 for 7. The Dolphins chase saw their hopes of notching up a win sink. Vernon Philander (5 for 17) bowled with venom and was well assisted by Rory Kleinveldt (3 for 23). Only Dave Miller with 26 showed any resistance on a sorry looking batting card. The Cobras bowled the Dolphins out for 102 and earned a 14-run win.The results were far more decisive for the Eagles, who lost to the Titans by nine wickets in Kimberley. The Eagles put on 125 for 5 against the Titans, with Boeta Dippenaar’s 36 off 29 balls the top score. The Titans bowlers shared the wickets between them with Pierre Joubert, David Wiese, Faf du Plessis and Shaun von Berg each claiming one each. Blake Snijman clipped the Eagles wings with a devastating, undefeated 89 off 64 balls as the Titans cruised to victory with 15 balls to spare. The Eagles took out their frustration three days later, when they played the Cobras in Paarl. Dillon du Preez (3 for 17) became the joint highest wicket-taker in the tournament so far when he removed Andrew Puttick for 15 to peg the Cobras back early. The Cape batsmen all got starts with Stiaan van Zyl, Henry Davids and Justin Kemp making 20, 16 and 24 respectively. Justin Ontong was the only batsmen to step out of the 20s, scoring 37 off 29 balls as the Cobras ended on 137 for 5.Morne van Wyk soared high for the Bloemfontein based side. His unbeaten 85 off 58 balls, included six fours and four sixes. The Cobras bowlers only had two moments of success: the first when Ontong removed Adrian McLaren for 33 and the other when Philander had Dean Elgar caught for 15. The Eagles won with four balls to spare, to keep their semi-final hopes in flight.Another side that also has a chance at the last four is the Lions who took advantage of an inexperienced Dolphins side, who, during the course of the week, terminated the contracts of five senior players. In Potchefstroom, the Lions had immediate success when Cameron Delport fell to Ethan O’Reilly for a duck. Then Ahmed Amla was trapped in front by Robbie Frylink, who shared the top bowling honours with du Preez, for 4 and Dale Benkenstein for 0. The Dolphins were 8 for 3 before Dave Miller performed lifesaver-like heroics. His 90 off 52 balls propelled him to third highest on the competition’s batting rankings and added some respectability to the Dolphins scorecard. They ended on a competitive 159 for 5. Neil McKenzie (46 off 42 balls) and Vaughn van Jaarsveld (40 off 29 balls) were the backbone of the Lions’ innings. Although neither were there at the end, the Lions were untroubled by the Dolphins bowlers and won with five balls to spare. The match between the Eagles and the Lions on Sunday is effectively a quarter-final, with the team that wins going through to the last four. The best was saved for last, in Port Elizabeth. The Warriors scored the highest total this week – 172 for 9 – an indication of the authority they have in the competition so far. Colin Ingram, who tops the batting rankings, only scored five but Justin Kreush and Davy Jacobs were on hand. Kreusch scored 61 off 45 balls and the captain chipped in with 56 off 30 balls as they flayed the Cobras bowling. Monde Zondeki (2 for 21) and Vernon Philander (2 for 29) were the most successful of the snakes. The experience of Nicky Boje (3 for 10) spearheaded the Warriors’ attack, although it was Garnet Kruger (2 for 35) who took the first wicket. Puttick was out early again, this time for 19. Stiaan van Zyl (29 off 17 balls) also fell to Kruger before the Boje blitz began. After he removed Kemp, Rory Klienveldt and Henry Davids, the meat was taken off the Cobras batting bones. They ended on 153 for 8, 19 runs short of the target. Despite the loss, the Cobras are into the semis, along with the Titans and the Warriors.

Sub-12, Sub-14, Sub-15…

Rangnick must sign Ousmane Dembele

Manchester United have not made much progress so far in their winter transfer window, despite many players being linked to the club over the first two weeks, but Ralf Rangnick could be set to make his first star signing as manager at Old Trafford.

Rangnick’s side have been struggling to get results in the Premier League since the new year began, with a defeat at home in their first game of the year against Wolves, and drawing in their second league game of 2022 with Aston Villa after losing a two-goal lead on Saturday evening.

These results and a clear lack of determination to see games out will only put more pressure on the interim manager to make signings who can make a positive impact and offer the side the quality they need to climb into the top four as they compete with West Ham United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur for a Champions League qualifying place.

One player that could save Rangnick’s six months in charge at Old Trafford, is Ousmane Dembele who was hailed “better than Mbappe” by Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, recently.

The 24-year-old forward has not been playing a lot for the La Liga giants with only six appearances in the league this season so far due to a knee injury, and has been linked with a move to Manchester United this week, with the £287k-per-week gem out of contract in the summer, so a cut-price deal could be available if Rangnick feels it would be worth stepping up on the signings this month.

Dembele has a fantastic goal involvement record at Barcelona, despite only playing 58 minutes on average per game for the club so far, with a goal or assist every 141 minutes according to Transfermarkt.

Someone with consistent output would be a great addition to the Manchester United forward line, with the creative possibilities endless for the French attacker if he was to play alongside the second-highest goalscorer in the history of football, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Fans would also love to see Dembele add attacking depth at Old Trafford, with one fan even tweeting:

“What is the solution to make Man United a great club? Sign Dembele.”

Rangnick will be looking to find a way to get the fans back on side after some turned on the manager after the Aston Villa game on Saturday evening, so signing a star offensive player like Dembele could be a good way to get back in the good books of the fanbase for the German coach.
