Faisalabad Wolves opener Mohammad Hafeez picked the perfect time to smash the first century of the tournament, his 53-ball 100 sinking Lahore Lions in the semi-finals at the National Stadium. Hafeez’s effort was the cornerstone of Faisalabad’s 211, the first 200-plus total of the competition, which proved 45 runs too many for Lahore. After being sent in, Hafeez plundered 117 runs with Asif Hussain at 10-an-over to drive Faisalabad towards a big score. It was Hussain who was the aggressor in the early overs, before Hafeez opened out. There was no let-up in the momentum even when Hussain fell for a 34-ball 54 in the 12th over – the next over, from Waqas Ahmed, was the most expensive of the innings, Hafeez blasting a six and three fours to take 20 runs. Hafeez was dismissed in the 17th over, after crashing 16 fours and two sixes, with the score at 176, after which Waqas Ali’s cameo made sure Faisalabad crossed 200.Lahore didn’t wilt in the face of the big target, making a spirited start to the chase despite losing Nasir Jamshed early. Salman Butt and the Akmal brothers kept up with the asking-rate but no one besides Butt could sustain the onslaught. The fight went out of Lahore with the loss of Kashif Siddiq and Waqas Ahmed in consecutive overs in the middle of the innings. The asking-rate started to rise and when Butt was dismissed for 59 in the 15th over, the match was all but decided. In the other semi-final, defending champions Sialkot Stallions reached yet another domestic Twenty20 final by edging out Karachi Dolphins by seven runs in what was a rematch of last year’s title clash. It was a game with plenty of twists. Sialkot opener Imran Nazir started the match with two fours off the first two balls, then smacked a six over square leg and a four to midwicket in the second over before retiring hurt with the score at 29 in two overs. After a steady spell, Sialkot lost three wickets in the space of three overs, followed by another burst of hitting, from Shoaib Malik and Nazir, who returned after the fifth over.Sialkot had reached a strong 89 for 3 after ten when Karachi started to reel in the run-rate, with the help of the legspin of Shahid Afridi, who took wickets in three consecutive overs. Malik remained unbeaten on 40 but Sialkot never hit the gear they had in the early part of the innings to finish on a middling 149.The Karachi chase had a bizarre first 12 overs. They reached 82 for 6, but 49 of those runs came in three frenetic overs, while in the rest they struggled to score. Shahzaib Hasan started in a hurry, carting Mohammad Asif’s first over for 18 but Abdul Razzaq struck twice in the second over to check the scoring. Asif then took two wickets of his own in the third over and Karachi were down to 22 for 4.Afridi didn’t bother about the wickets lost, belting three fours and two sixes before top-edging a catch to cover to fall for a 11-ball 29. The required-rate was less than seven at that stage, so Fawad Alam and Sheharyar Ghani sensibly went about accumulating the runs in singles and twos. After Ghani was dismissed in the 12th over, Fawad brought the required-rate back under control by crashing a six and a four off two free-hits in a Abdur Rehman over. His exit in the 15th over, to a superb diving catch from Shahid Yousuf at short midwicket, turned the game but Karachi managed to take it to a stage where the last pair needed 19 off two overs. When Mohammad Sami took eight off the first three balls from Naved-ul-Hasan, the match could have tilted either way, but he was run out off the next delivery to send Sialkot through to the final.

Maharashtra and Hyderabad topple big guns en route to final

A round-up of the semi-final matches of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy that took place on March 15

Cricinfo staff15-Mar-2010Maharashtra held their nerve for a three-wicket win with two balls to spare against fancied Tamil Nadu at the Maharani Usharaje Trust Cricket Ground in Indore. The big names for Tamil Nadu were on IPL duty but the opening stand of 54 between Abhinav Mukund (32) and Srikkanth Anirudha (30) augured well after they were put in. Offspinner Ganesh Gaikwad sent back both batsmen but another thirty followed from Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan and helped Tamil Nadu post 153. Rangaraj Sutesh’s early strikes rattled Maharashtra’s chase but key contributions from Sangram Atitkar and Gaikwad kept them in the hunt. Even as offspinner Murthy Prabhu picked up 3 for 16, the most important hand was played by Digambar Waghmare. The No. 7 batsman hit 31 off 17 balls, including one four and two sixes, to take them home eventually. With several players representing the Daredevils franchise, Delhi also found the going tough and went down by five wickets against Hyderabad. Choosing to bat, they were given an early lift by opener Farman Ahmed’s quickfire 54. However, there was to be no encore lower down the order and right-arm seamer Vivek Krishna proved to be the biggest beneficiary with 4 for 25, as Delhi finished on 157. A strong opening partnership of 48 looked to have Hyderabad a great platform during the reply. Akshath Reddy’s 30-ball 33 was well matched by Anoop Pai’s 24-ball 31 as Hyderabad made steady progress towards the target. The win was ultimately sealed by Amol Shinde and Hanuma Vihari with an over to spare.

West Brom receive Kyle Bartley injury boost

West Bromwich Albion have received a huge injury boost concerning Kyle Bartley ahead of their upcoming Championship fixture.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by Birmingham Live, Valerien Ismael suggested that, after missing the Baggies’ 1-0 defeat to Queens Park Rangers last weekend with an ankle injury, the centre-back could be in line for a return to first-team action this Saturday, when Peterborough United make the trip to The Hawthorns.

Speaking about the recovery of the 30-year-old, the Frenchman said: “We hope he comes back next week. Normally the injury is seven to 10 days so we hope he comes back next week to have another possibility.

“Cedric Kipre will be back, but it’s not enough – we need every player, a strong team and a strong bench, and when you have that you can compete in a top game like that with the best XI, but at the minute we have to find solutions.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how impressive Bartley has been for West Brom this season, in addition to the fact that Ismael is currently experiencing something of an injury crisis at the back, the news that the centre-back looks likely to make a return to first-team action this weekend is sure to have left fans of the club buzzing.

Indeed, over his 24 Championship appearances in the current campaign, the £2.25m-rated defender has helped his side keep nine clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.3 interceptions, one tackle, 4.3 clearances, and winning a whopping 8.9 duels – with a success rate of 67% – per game.

The £15k-per-week man has also chipped in for his side in an attacking capacity, scoring two goals, registering one assist and creating one big chance for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 1.6 shots and making 0.3 key passes per fixture.

These returns have seen the 30-year-old average an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.13, ranking him as Ismael’s third-best performer in the second tier of English football so far this season.

As such, it is clear for all to see that it is a case of the sooner Bartley returns the better for West Brom, with the centre-back’s reintroduction to the side undoubtedly providing the Baggies’ chances of picking up all three points this weekend with a substantial boost.

We were offered $50m to quit – Kochi franchise

The controversy over the IPL Kochi franchise has become more murky with the franchise CEO alleging that Lalit Modi offered them $50 million to “quit the game and get out” soon after their successful bid for it

Cricinfo staff14-Apr-2010

The controversy surrounding the IPL Kochi franchise has now snowballed into a major issue•Indian Premier League

The controversy over the IPL Kochi franchise has become more murky with the franchise CEO alleging that Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, offered them $50 million to “quit the game and get out” soon after their successful bid for it. Modi has denied the charge and said he could not have offered the money because he was not a bidder in the first place. The allegation was made on several Indian television channels by Satyajit Gaekwad, CEO of Rendezvous Sports World, the owners of the Kochi franchise. “One week after the bid was declared in favour of the Kochi team, the investor from Rendezvous Shailendra [Gaekwad] was called by Mr Modi and told that you would be given $50 million if you just quit the game and get out,” Gaekwad told .”That is where the investors thought that since they had won the bid and had worked hard for the last six-seven months to get this bid, they did not agree,” Gaekwad, a former Congress MP from Vadodara, said. “That’s the reason there were some delaying tactics taking place and a confusion created by Mr. Lalit Modi that he didn’t know who the owner was. In that case, if it was so, why would we have won the bid? That’s the million-dollar question Modi needs to answer.”He said he was not among those who were present when the offer was made. “But Shailendra was among the people called there and that is where he told the team management… they discussed what happened and they decided collectively, Nothing doing, we have won the bid and we will go ahead [with it].”Modi told the channel the allegations were completely false. “I can’t bribe somebody to give me the franchise because I am not a bidder in the first place,” he said. “There is no reason for me to give them the bribe because automatically, it would lead to the cancellation of the tender and it would lead to a new tender. So I don’t know where they are coming up with this imaginative figure.”Rendezvous won the bid for the Kochi franchise through the auction on March 21, after it was deferred by two weeks at the insistence of the BCCI over exorbitant financial clauses. However, the deal has become a subject of controversy with questions raised over the ownership. The issue snowballed last week; the deal was finally signed on Saturday night but the next day Modi made public the franchise’s ownership structure on his Twitter feed. This sparked off a complaint from the franchise owners to the BCCI, following which the board president, Shashank Manohar, wrote a letter to Modi pulling him up for his action. In a related development, tax officials said they had initiated an investigation of the Kochi franchise’s fundings.”The Directorate General of Investigation in Kochi had discussed this issue with senior officials in New Delhi yesterday and the department has ordered a probe into the issue,” a spokesperson for the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said in New Delhi on Wednesday. “This issue has now come in the public domain. So we are bound to investigate. At the moment, the probe is basically a paper-based investigation. It does not involve any formal complaint as of now.”

Dogged Warwickshire dig in

Wickets and boundaries were hard to come by on day three of a fluctuating County Championship Division One encounter in Canterbury

06-May-2010
ScorecardWickets and boundaries were hard to come by on day three of a fluctuating County Championship Division One encounter in Canterbury where Warwickshire batted their way out of a hole to go into the final day against Kent with an overall lead of 131.At stumps the visitors, who faced a first-innings deficit of 127, had reached 258 for 4 courtesy of three stoic knocks by captain Ian Westwood (68), England Test batsmen Ian Bell (94) and Jonathan Trott (65 not out). Though they lost Darren Maddy to the 15th ball of their reply Warwickshire batted with far more resolve second time around and, on an easing pitch, the Kent attack appeared somewhat toothless.Having scored three from four balls Maddy shouldered arms to an Amjad Khan off cutter that held its line up the St Lawrence slope to go leg before and make it 3 for 1. That brought together Westwood and Bell for a gritty second-wicket stand of 157 in 55 overs that overhauled the deficit and took their side into a slight lead before Kent finally broke through three overs from tea through occasional offspinner Martin van Jaarsveld.Having batted almost three hours for his 68 with seven fours, Westwood was pinned on the crease by a quick arm ball to go leg before and make it 160 for 2. Bell’s painstaking 182-ball stay with 10 boundaries ended two overs after the break when he moved back and across in defence to a shooting off cutter from Amjad Khan to also fall lbw.For much of the day Warwickshire’s batsmen appeared hell bent on making amends for their first-innings misdemeanours. Content to work the ball around into the gaps, they went 41.4 overs without scoring a boundary and needed 32.1 overs to score the 50 runs that took them to 200.Trott took almost two hours to post his dogged half-century, finally reaching the milestone with four boundaries four overs from stumps, but he lost fourth-wicket partner Jim Troughton (24) to the last ball of the day when the left-hander sparred at a Darren Stevens bouncer to be caught behind.Kent resumed at the start of the day on 374 for 9 but added only three runsbefore Rikki Clarke removed Darren Stevens without addition to his overnight score of 57. Heaving across the line, Stevens went leg before to give Clarke career-best figures of 6 for 63.
