The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Ijaz Butt has claimed victory over player power in the national side, saying it has now been completely eradicated. In recent months, Butt has quietly moved away from the public limelight, allowing senior board officials to do much of the board’s talking. Though unsaid, it seems to have been the result of last summer, where Butt’s various public utterances on the spot-fixing scandal resulted in the ICC warning the PCB eventually to clean up its affairs, including governance. But in a (now) rare interview to , Butt says that Pakistan cricket has benefited in some ways under his administration. “Let me assure you that player power, though present in the past, does not exist in the national team at the moment as I have taken strict actions to eradicate it,” Butt said.Infighting, player indiscipline and clashes between the players and boards have been an inextricable part of Pakistan cricket, particularly over the last few years. Last year, the PCB banned Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf from playing for Pakistan in any format for an indefinite period, while handing out one-year bans to Shoaib Malik and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and imposing fines on Shahid Afridi and the Akmal brothers. The punishments came in the aftermath of a disastrous tour of Australia in 2009-10.Though the punishments were all either reversed or lessened soon after, Butt said the message had been sent out. “To crush player power, I penalised even prominent players like Younis Khan, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik and Kamran Akmal without showing any reluctance which in the past had damaged the team spirit,” he said. After a brief period of relative calm, things have begun to heat up again with a selectorial spat between Afridi and coach Waqar Younis brewing away, one that seems to have taken in chief selector Mohsin Khan as well. But the board has acted in both cases, first preventing Khan from holding a press conference in which he was to air his discontent and then reaching a resolution with the chief selector. Afridi has also been hauled up by the board for his remarks upon returning from the Caribbean in which he hinted at the differences with the coach.Butt said that a decision on the issue would be taken after he received manager Intikhab Alam’s report. “An undisciplined person, whether he is an official or player, will face punishment at the end of the tour.”He acknowledged that the existing system of selection under which the selectors choose the squad and the tour selection committee the playing eleven had some flaws, though he said it suited Pakistan. One of the solutions, he said, was a strong head of the tour selection committee.Butt also admitted that on some occasions he had differed with selectors and had asked them to review the selection of some players. “Whenever the selectors refused to review the selection, I used my constitutional power and made the changes,” he said.Butt also highlighted the financial successes under his administration, nearly three years old now. No international side has toured Pakistan since the Lahore attacks on Sri Lanka’s cricketers and support staff in March 2009 and the 2011 World Cup was taken away, but Butt said the board’s reserves had increased to Rs. 3.2 billion (US $ 37.7 million).”We achieved this despite playing our home series at neutral venues,” he said. “The PCB was financially weak with the reserves of Rs1.6 billion (US $ 18.8 million) when I took over the charge and it owed over Rs1 billion (US $ 11.7 million) to different parties.”

Collingwood tells of captaincy hurt

Paul Collingwood has spoken about his hurt at losing the England Twenty20 captaincy to Stuart Broad and revealed that he wasn’t given the chance to interview to keep the position. Despite insisting he still has the desire and determination to continue his England career, he also admitted he “has some thinking to do.”Collingwood was called to a meeting with Geoff Miller, the national selector, on Wednesday morning in London, 24 hours before the ECB revealed Broad as the new Twenty20 captain alongside Alastair Cook for the 50-over side. The decision to remove Collingwood came just a year after he led England to the World Twenty20 title in West Indies, their first piece of global silverware, and Collingwood had always stated his aim of defending the prize in Sri Lanka next year.”Four days ago I was upbeat about getting back into training and playing after my knee operation,” Collingwood told the Mail on Sunday. “I was full of optimism about trying to regain my form and my place in the one-day side.”As for the longer term, after retiring from Test cricket in the winter, I had my sights set firmly on leading our defence of the World Twenty20 in 2012. So when Geoff Miller told me, it was like a juggernaut had come along at full steam and completely wiped me out … just disbelief.”Collingwood, though, was quick to offer his full backing to the new captain. “I want to make it clear I totally support Stuart Broad as my successor. He has the kind of fast-thinking brain that you need in Twenty20 captaincy. But even though I understand all that … I’m still very disappointed and hurt by what has happened.”Despite being a reluctant captain, who needing persuading to take the Twenty20 captaincy in 2009 after having had a difficult time in charge of the one-day teams, Collingwood grew to savour the role. The successful World Twenty20 campaign formed the bulk of a record eight-match winning streak that only ended when England lost the second Twenty20 against Australia in Melbourne in January.”After having decided to retire from Test cricket, my desire and motivation to lead England on to the next World T20 grew stronger,” Collingwood said. “It was my passion, my last big ambition in international cricket. It meant a massive amount to me.”It is likely that Collingwood’s slump in form played a major part in the decision to look towards the future with Broad. Despite England’s Twenty20 success, Collingwood’s own contributions with the bat were minimal over the last year – with a top score of 21 in his last 13 T20 innings – and a persistent knee problem reduced his bowling workload.Yet, having retired from Test cricket after the Ashes, Collingwood was determined to revive his limited-overs career and underwent knee surgery after the World Cup. He remains on course to return for Durham’s domestic Twenty20 campaign, which starts in June.”By not playing Test cricket, I felt I would have the mental freshness to carry on as leader and to prolong my form when it came back and extend my international future,” he said. “Now, while it would be madness to cut things short straightaway, the future is far less clear than it was four days ago. I have some thinking to do. I’m still very fit and I want to show people I can still play.”

Marcinho prega humildade contra o Audax e diz: 'Vantagem é perigosa'

In Butt’s absence, chief operating officer Subhan Ahmed will take over as acting chairman and governing board member Naveed Akram Cheema will look after the board’s financial matters, Pakistan newspaper reported.Butt’s term as PCB chairman is scheduled to end in October but there is the option of it being extended by the Pakistan president, who is also the Patron of the board.Butt, whose tenure has been dogged by controversy, received harsh criticism from the Pakistan public after a much-publicised clash with Shahid Afridi. His relationship with other boards has also been rocky: Butt had problems with the ECB after making controversial accusations against the England team during Pakistan’s tour in 2010.

Leicestershire spoil Edgbaston party

Leicestershire took the runners-up spot in the Friends Life t20 North Group when their five-wicket victory put a dampener on the opening of Warwickshire’s £32million pavilion at Edgbaston

Scorecard
Leicestershire took the runners-up spot in the Friends Life t20 North Group when their five-wicket victory put a dampener on the opening of Warwickshire’s £32million pavilion at Edgbaston. The Bears’ least successful campaign in Twenty20 cricket stuttered to a conclusion as the new permanent floodlights – which were used for the first time – lit up Leicestershire’s 10th victory in 16 games.A crowd of around 10,000 saw Warwickshire post a total of 166 for 8 but half of the fans had gone home when Leicestershire were set a reduced target of 133 in 15 overs following a downpour between the innings.Josh Cobb got them up and running with a quickfire 28 before he was caught behind off Chris Woakes and it was far from a terminal setback when Will Jefferson and Abdul Razzaq departed in the next over from Jeetan Patel. James Taylor, a century-maker at Edgbaston in an early-season CB40 meeting, joined Andrew McDonald in a superbly paced partnership.Taylor top-edged Keith Barker to backward square leg after making 49 out of 90 in nine overs and McDonald, who went past 500 runs in this season’s competition, was brilliantly caught at long off by Rikki Clarke for 40 in the last over from Woakes. With five still wanted, Wayne White kept his nerve and pulled a six over mid-wicket to win the match with a ball to spare. The home side had made a flying start when Varun Chopra (24) and Neil Carter (20) took 30 runs from two overs by Razzaq and Cobb. The onslaught – which included seven fours and a six by the openers from the first 20 balls – was checked when both batsmen got themselves out attempting to sweep the left-arm spinner, Claude Henderson. However this was only brief respite for Leicestershire before the left-handed pair Jim Troughton and William Porterfield stepped up the tempo again in a stand of 71 from only 46 deliveries. The blitz peaked with 21 runs in an over off Jigar Naik before Leicestershire found a way of stemming the tide. The canny Henderson completed his stint with three for 25 as McDonald held a swirling chance from Porterfield (37) in the third-man area and the Australian was the bowler when Troughton holed out at long off after hitting five fours and a six in making 46 from 32 balls.White, the most economical of the seamers, removed Clarke, and McDonald held two more catches as Razzaq made up for his early mauling by taking three wickets in his last two overs.
