Why this transfer deal makes perfect sense for Manchester United

Radamel Falcao scored his 29th and 30th goals of this season, helping Atletico Madrid to an emphatic 5-0 win against Granada on the weekend. El Tigre looks certain to leave the Vicente Calderon in the future, but links to Manchester United have come from so far out of left field that it seems far easier to just quash those rumours and look ahead to tomorrow.

Alex Ferguson has a way about him, a tone with which you can almost guarantee that what he’s saying is true. The United manager strongly denied there was any truth to the stories linking the club with David de Gea, while he delivered a memorable line about Real Madrid before selling them Cristiano Ronaldo. And let’s be honest, how many football managers do you expect to feed the media with exactly what they’re looking for? Ferguson has rubbished the Falcao stories, and that’s all I’d expect from him.

But a story is a story, and it weighs in with the reports earlier in the year that United were in the race for Robert Lewandowski. Whichever way you want to cut it, you can’t really run away from the idea that United do seem to be looking for another forward ahead of next season. And even more so, you can’t completely rule out Wayne Rooney moving on this summer.

[cat_link cat=”manchester-united” type=”list”]

In fact, it might be a good thing. Rooney is nowhere near the footballer that Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are. He’s supposed to be the leading light of the England national team, and perhaps also for this United team. But he’s fallen short of what you’d have expected of him, and whatever praise can be directed to the current United No 10, it’s hard to associate him with the very best in European football.

It’s about consistency and winning. I think it’s quite clear that Ferguson has taken on an approach whereby no one is safe at United – and that’s the way it should be done. It’s a massive swing from where we were in 2010, with Rooney all but expected to move away and United unable to disguise the look of genuine fear and worry in their eyes. At that point, Rooney still had a lot going for him. It seemed to be that he was holding all the cards while United were in a period of rebuilding following the departures of Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez. Now, United are off the back of signing one of the Premier League’s best forwards and could be set to move their operations abroad for the finest the continent has to offer.

Arguably, Robin van Persie has taken over the title of talisman in this United team. Rooney, for all his reputation in English football cannot be relied upon to consistently produce numbers that are associated with players of that stature. And it maybe says as much about how Europe looks at Rooney as well. With the player’s future far from certain, there isn’t a real battle for his signature among the continent’s elite. No Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus or Bayern Munich. PSG are said to be interested, but you’d expect that of a club who are still building their reputation in the game.

For United, it’s become a need for more firepower and an improvement on just the one player who seems certain to get you over 20 league goals.

The performance of Falcao and Atletico on the weekend displayed how he can be of use in this United team. With both of the Colombian’s goals coming from crosses into the centre of the box, he’d be the ideal fit for a team who rely so heavily on wingers. Alex Ferguson may be more than comfortable with the idea of not adding a prominent name to his midfield, but the signing of van Persie last summer showed that he is concerned about capitalising on the way his current team play the game.

United may have been fortunate to see some form come from Rooney during van Persie’s dry spell, but there are greater assurances that come in the form of players like Falcao.

This has turned into another war for United, where so many have been won in the past. The loss of the title last season to Manchester City meant that a ruthless approach had to be taken. For whatever may be said about the needs and wealth of City and Chelsea, United are right up there in terms of ability and need to capture the best Europe has to offer. It’s become a new threat, not just domestically but also in the Champions League.

Ferguson has often gone for the very best available, with business in recent transfer windows moving slightly away from that, yet there were plenty of reports linking United with players like Lucas Moura and Eden Hazard. At this stage, can it be really that hard to argue in favour of Ferguson swooping for one of the very best available in Falcao?

Norwich City v Reading – Match Preview

Such is the delicate nature of the battle for Premier League safety it is a nervous time to be a Norwich supporter. With just four points and four places separating Chris Hughton’s side from the bottom three the pressure is piled on them to secure a win that would almost guarantee a third straight season in the top-flight. One win in their last 16 has dragged the Canaries into the dogfight and have been sliding ever since their 10 match unbeaten streak came to end just before Christmas. Back then they dreamt of European qualification, but now nightmarish visions of dropping back into the Championship are becoming all too real.

Reading approach the game knowing their fate could be sealed by five o’clock if results go against them. Most expect the Royals to be a second tier club by the time the referee’s whistle is blown at Carrow Road and, with the need to score a victory weighing heavy on Norwich, that could work in their favour. Nigel Adkins has brought with him a bright optimism since arriving at the Madjeski Stadium and refuses to believe that all is not lost despite needing maximum points from their remaining games to have a chance at surviving. He’ll hope to break his winning duck this weekend and will take heart from their goalless draw with Liverpool last time out.

Team News

Bradley Johnson (dead leg) is a major doubt for Norwich, who can welcome back Anthony Pilkington and Wes Hoolahan after the missed the defeat at Arsenal last week. Goalkeeper John Ruddy is back to full fitness and is pushing for a start.

Reading could have Jimmy Kebe fit enough to return after overcoming a groin injury, while fellow winger Hal Robson-Kanu (knee) has a chance of featuring. However, the game comes too soon for Adam Federici and midfielder Hope Akpan (both ankle).

What the managers said…

“There’s no perfect opponent. The only perfect ones are the ones you get results from and we need to make sure we get a result. We’re still in there fighting and at this moment we have another 15 points up for grabs and we’ve got to get as many as we can. To go the Emirates and play as well as we did shows a lot of character. We felt they have had some elements go in their favour, but we have to dust ourselves down.” Chris Hughton rejects the idea that Reading will be pushovers (Eastern Daily Press)

“We’re on letter A of the alphabet and we’ve got to get to letter Z. It’s been a good three weeks, you’ve seen where we were to start off with and where we are now and there’ s a lot of things we’ve implemented in a very, very short space of time. There’s so much more that needs to be done. “ Nigel Adkins admits he still has a lot of work to do at Reading (readingfc.co.uk)

Tottenham or Liverpool – who represents the best move for Spanish starlet?

Like with most of the cases in which Barcelona look to offload their youngsters, the potential departure of Gerard Deulofeu this summer will see him return to Catalonia in the near future, likely as near as next summer. It’s for that reason that Dortmund opted out of signing the talented winger. What use would they have for the player, no matter how good he was, if he couldn’t really be considered as a replacement for the departed Mario Goetze?

The story on Deulofeu should be well known by now. He’s up there in the class of Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi as one of La Masia’s most talented graduates. Under no circumstances would the club – for all the criticism that can be said of their transfer policy – allow Deulofeu to escape their grasp permanently.

Liverpool and Tottenham however, are said to be looking to take the youngster on loan for the coming season. The player himself wants to play at the top level of European football. A move to Dortmund suited him due to the German side’s participation in the Champions League, but at this stage of his career the Europa League would do just as well.

[cat_link cat=”premiership” type=”list”]

You’d struggle to find any concrete reason to suggest that either Tottenham or Liverpool would be best suited for the player. Neither are likely to offer him regular first team opportunities considering the players already in both teams’ squads, while the Premier League isn’t really the most ideal destination for his football education. Barcelona will exercise extreme caution with Deulofeu, ensuring they don’t make the same mistakes as they did with Bojan Krkic. Provided everything goes to plan, Deulofeu will spend most of, if not all his career in Spain.

It’s not that Deulofeu would be a poor acquisition for either Premier League club, it’s that it would be a pointless exercise. Why invest time in the making of someone else’s player? We shouldn’t even entertain the prospect of either team landing him in a permanent deal. The player’s performances at youth level with Spain have been excellent, as he’s formed a promising partnership with Real Madrid’s Jese Rodriguez – one of his bets friends in the game and someone who he’s grown up with in the Spanish setup. Deulofeu’s most recent season with Barcelona B has also been his most productive, scoring 18 goals in 33 appearances in what is Spain’s equivalent of the Championship. He’s good enough for the first team of many clubs in Europe, yet just a little short of taking a spot in the Barcelona senior team.

Other clubs around Europe and in Spain are also said to be in the race for the player. Isaac Cuenca has talked up Ajax following the spell he had in the Netherlands last season, while Real Sociedad and Sevilla could be in line to take Deulofeu on loan for the coming campaign.

Barcelona, of course, will have the final say. Their priority is to ensure the player receives first-team football wherever he ends up, though their preference was to see him head to Dortmund prior to the Bundesliga side backing away from the deal. You’d have to ask whether Spurs and Liverpool can afford to take a gamble on Deulofeu in this regard, offering him regular minutes while still maintaining the upward trajectory they each seem to be on. The switch from Spain to Germany isn’t as noticeable as it would be if the player moved to England. Barcelona may also take note of Daniel Carvajal’s season at Bayer Leverkusen, in which the right-back earned a place back at Real Madrid following his sale last summer.

For now, Barcelona may find the most joy in sending Deulofeu to one of the La Liga teams interested in his services. The player’s integration at a club like Sociedad is likely to be a success considering their young core of players, while Sevilla have made him a priority this summer, with a view to using him as a short-term replacement for Jesus Navas.

Should Tottenham and Liverpool look to make a move for Deulofeu?

Forget Jack Wilshere, is Everton starlet England’s future?

Much is made of Jack Wilshere being the prodigal son, but for me Ross Barkley is the real deal.

Everton fans may still be mourning the loss of Marouane Fellaini and rightly so because they have lost someone of undoubted quality. The Premier League club need not dwell on this for long though, because I believe they have a man of potential world-class ability waiting in the wings to fill the void.

Ross Barkley has taken the Premier League by storm this season, and has rightly won himself many admirers. Displays which have shown a degree of confidence and experience beyond his mere 19 years of age, the youngster has shown himself to be the creative spark to fire both Everton and England forward.

Standing toe-to-toe with the established stars of Chelsea, Barkley stood firm where others would have buckled. A constant source of inspiration and direction for the ‘Toffees’, the future appears to be bright for the talented youngster.

[cat_link cat=”everton” type=”list”]

At 19 he is far from the finished article, and as much as Saturday’s performance was a success for Barkley it wasn’t without its faults. From time to time he was caught in possession and gifted Chelsea the initiative when perhaps they didn’t warrant it. Whatever the critique and advice Barkley is afforded going forward, I am convinced he will take it in his stride.

His peers regard him as someone that realises that he was a lot to learn, and that he is readily keen to make the best of his abilities. In Roberto Martinez he has the perfect manager in my view to harness this precocious wealth. A midfield pool that contains the likes of Osman, Barry and McCarthy is definitely conducive to harnessing this talent, and the style of football that the Spaniard is trying to breed is perfect to develop Barkley’s abilities.

The manager has unerring faith, playing the Englishman as much as possible so far this season and clearly he understands the balancing act required here.  Barkley has occupied an advanced playmaker role this season, and this suits him perfectly at this stage. Any mistake he makes has been easily covered by a supporting cast behind him containing the stoic Gareth Barry amongst others. The Premier League is a baptism of fire to even the hardiest of footballing souls, but I think the way Barkley has been employed so far is both shrewd and effective.

Perhaps most important for Everton fans, and this is something that cannot be taught, is Barkley’s innate Scouse steel. A terrible leg break may have set the youngster back somewhat, but now he shows the self-confidence and aggression crucial to Premier League success.

Watching Barkley he wants to be out there, he wants the ball as much as possible. Not shy of a tackle, he offers the balance that perhaps Everton and England both crave.

Such self-assurance would have been tested away on England duty, but from observers he looked every bit the assured talent that his admirers have touted him as. Could we have a future a star in our midst?

I believe so.

The future is bright for Barkley, but it always important to temper the excitement. Whilst the comparisons to Wilshere will be made, it is important to learn lessons from the Arsenal midfielders career so far. Played readily at such a young age, much by necessity, Wilshere has been constantly dogged by reoccurring stress fractures and related injuries. Maybe Wilshere will continue his rise to prominence, but personally his development has been slowed by an excessive workload at such a young age.

Martinez knows he has an abundance of riches in the middle of the park, with Gibson on the return as well. The need to push Barkley into the action week in week out isn’t there, and I can see the Spaniard rotating the squad heavily as we enter the bulk of the season. Difficult I know to do considering the excitement surrounding the player, but for the long term this is an understandable necessity.

A loan spell to the Championship may still not be a bad bet, even if it draws a degree of disappointment from fans.

Everton may well have lost their talismanic star to United, but if they play their cards right they may have a gem for years to come.

Newcastle and Norwich target unsure of future

PSV Eindhoven striker Ola Toivonen has put Newcastle, Fulham and Norwich on red alert by claiming that he is unsure of his future.

The Swedish international has been heavily linked with the Premier League trio for some time, but opted to stay in the Eredivisie this term.

However, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season rumours of a cut-price January switch to England have begun to circulate.

PSV are thought to be keen to recoup a respectable fee rather than let the 27-year-old leave for free in just over six months’ time.

When asked about a potential move away from Holland this winter, Toivonen said:

“I haven’t heard anything, it is my agent who takes care of that,” he is quoted by the Daily Star.

“Nothing new has happened.”

Toivonen has only found the back of the net on one occasion this season, but is still thought of as one of Dutch football’s top talents.

Although a centre-forward, the Scandinavian is equally adept in a more reserved attacking midfield role.

It is believed that PSV are willing to sell for just £2.5m, which has alerted Newcastle, Norwich and Fulham.

Gaffer proud of ‘ruthless’ Man City

Manuel Pellegrini is proud of his Manchester City side after they thrashed West Ham United 9-0 on aggregate in their Capital One Cup Semi-Final.

City won the first leg 6-0 at the Etihad two weeks ago to all but book their place in March’s final at Wembley, and then completed the rout with a 3-0 victory at Upton Park last night.

And the Chilean boss believes his players did well to finish the job in such style and is now turning his attentions to the other three competitions City have a chance of winning this season.

“I’m very proud of my team. We arrived in the Final winning five games with 19 goals scored, with just one goal conceded,” Pellegrini said.

“It is not easy when you’ve won the first Semi-Final 6-0. It was important for them to play not with the other score in mind, to play the game we did today.

“Now we’ve finished the Capital One Cup until March. It’s very important to continue in the FA Cup, so we must win against Watford on Saturday.”

But Pellegrini has played down claims that City have a real chance of winning the quadruple this season, and insists nothing is guaranteed for them.

“We have a lot of work to do,” he added.

“In the FA Cup we are just in the fourth round. In the Champions League we have a tough game against Barcelona. The Premier League is very close and it will still be close until the end between four or five teams.

“At the moment we are happy the way we are doing things. We must continue in the future the same way.”

Can a place in the Capital One Cup Final inspire Sunderland to survival?

Sunderland have defied the odds so far this season by reaching the Semi-Finals of the Capital One Cup.

And Gus Poyet’s side will be looking to cause another upset in their Semi-Final two-legged tie against Manchester United in the New Year as they look to gather momentum in the league and improve on their current form.

Having won just five games all season out of a possible 21, Gus Poyet’s side are facing a relegation battle but their performance in the Capital One Cup, has seen them knock out both high-flying Chelsea and Southampton.

Showing resilience in the Capital One Cup has driven the Black Cats to the Semi-Finals and they now face the stern task of knocking out David Moyes’ United as they look to win their first piece of silverware of the season.

A triumph in the Capital One Cup would ease the pressure on the Uruguayan and Sunderland and could potentially give them the morale boost they desperately need to turn around their league campaign.

Fans at the Stadium of Light haven’t had much to cheer about recently; however, Poyet will be fancying his chances against the Red Devils when they travel to the North-East cauldron, having seen his side beat the likes of Southampton, Chelsea and Man City at their home ground which speaks volumes of their determination and the 12th man their fans can be.

Jozy Altidore has been a big contributor to Sunderland’s strong, battling performances this season, with the American forward being the prime target man for Sunderland. Linking both Fabio Borini and Jozy Altidore could be a lethal force up front, with the on-loan Liverpool striker showing his potential as he scored a late equaliser against Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in the previous round of the competition.

If Gus Poyet’s team can grind out a narrow win in the first leg of the tie at the Stadium of Light, then their determination and spirit in the away fixture could see them battle to get a draw and send United crashing out.

Reaching the Final would be a huge lift around the Stadium of Light and could well give the squad, and Poyet, the boost they need to climb up and out of the relegation zone.

Man City ace hoping experience will win them the title

Manchester City midfielder James Milner believes that his side’s experience of coming out on top in a close title race will be enough to see them ease past Liverpool to claim this season’s top prize.

The Reds are currently four points ahead of the Sky Blues, but the chasing side know that if they win all of their remaining games – starting this weekend at Anfield – they will lift the trophy.

Whereas Liverpool have never claimed the Premier League title, City came out on top two years ago thanks to a final day victory against QPR, in what has often been described as the most dramatic end of season turn of events ever.

Although he believes that the Merseysiders have the advantage, Milner is confident that his team’s know-how will be enough for them to regain their crown:

“We’ve been here before and have won the title recently whereas Liverpool haven’t won one for a long time and whether that comes into play or not, I don’t know. As the finishing line gets closer, games that looked easier a few weeks ago prove to be anything but.” He told the club’s official website.

“It’s still in our hands because if we win seven games, we’ll be the champions, but Liverpool are in the box-seat because they are top and have the points already on the board so for me, they have to be favourites as things stand.

“We have the ability and experience to finish the job and it’s going to be an exciting finish for the neutrals.

FIVE signings to follow Sami Khedira to Manchester United

According to The Express, Manchester United are preparing an offer for Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira, following news that the European Champions are planning to transfer list the Germany international.

The 27 year-old is regarded as one of Europe’s top ball-winning midfielders, and certainly suits the template of Louis van Gaal’s customary utilisation of an anchor man in his tried and trusted 4-3-3 formation.

The tabloids believe Los Blancos are prepared to sell Khedira for around £20million, but Arsenal and Chelsea have been hotly linked too.

However, amid reports of a £200million war-chest at his disposal, it’s unlikely the Mannschaft star will be LvG’s final acquisition of the summer.

With that in mind, here’s a list of FIVE United targets who could follow Khedira to Old Trafford this summer – some inspired by his arrival, others more coincidental.

[ffc-gallery]CLICK ON KHEDIRA TO REVEAL

[/ffc-gallery]

MATS HUMMELS

Sami Khedira could soon find himself joined at Old Trafford by Germany team-mate and fellow Manchester United target Mats Hummels.

Measuring in at 6 foot 4 and averaging five successful aerial duels per match this season, the Borussia Dortmund centre-back is a formidable force in the air. He netted this bullet header against Portugal earlier this week:

But the 31-cap Germany star better known for his ability to play out of the back and link-up with midfield, often leading to comparisons with Mannschaft legend Franz Beckenbauer, best represented by these impressive attacking and passing statistics:

Here’s a vid showing Hummels’ impressive all-round game:

//www.youtube.com/embed/BitBv8B48UQ

Furthermore, the 25 year-old two-time Bundesliga winner represents the right balance between age, quality and experience from United’s point of view. His reported £25million price-tag strikes great value for money too.

TONI KROOS

Another Mannschaft star known to be on the Carrington radar is Bayern Munich’s Toni Kroos.

It was previously believed that the Germany international wouldn’t be entertaining the notion of a United switch this summer, despite having just a year left on his Allianz Arena contract. But recent speculation suggests his widely-alleged move to Old Trafford could be back on…

Boasting three Bundesliga titles, a Champions League title and 45 caps for Germany at just 24 years of age, Kroos is widely considered to be one of the most impressive young midfielders in world football.

His technical talents would certainly address the Red Devils’ desperate need for added quality in the middle of the park, just take a look at his outrageous passing stats from this season, courtesy of whoscored.com…

Kroos is a real assassin from long-range too. Here’s his top five Bundesliga goals:

//www.youtube.com/embed/IUXwiLUosYg

But Manchester United are by no means the only interested party, with Real Madrid and Chelsea both hotly linked.

NICOLAS GAITAN

Another technically-gifted midfielder on the Old Trafford radar is Benfica’s Nicolas Gaitan, according to The Metro…

The 26 year-old has long-been regarded as one of the most impressive talents outside of the European elite, having reached back-to-back Europa League finals with Aguias and claimed last term’s Primeira Liga title.

In the process, the Argentina international has netted 27 times in 177 appearances for the Portuguese champs, including eight goals this season and this mouth-watering free-kick…

//www.youtube.com/embed/m7qKTAupe1k?autoplay=1

But he’s better known for his trickery and intelligence on the ball, demonstrated in the below video…

//www.youtube.com/embed/VOWb2N3ZU-I

But Liverpool, Chelsea and Barcelona, to name a few, are known to hold an interest in the Benfica winger.

DALEY BLIND

Another Metro-inspired transfer rumour – the Red Devils are reportedly considering Holland left-back Daley Blind as an alternative to £30million target Luke Shaw.

The 24 year-old’s stock has dramatically risen at the World Cup, in no small part due his impressive number of assists…

including this sensational set-up to Robin van Persie against Spain…

Blinds’ World Cup form comes after an equally inspiring campaign for Ajax, where he won the Eredivisie title and the Dutch Player of the Year award.

Mirror Football have rated him at around £12million and believe the Amsterdam outfit would be prepared to sell.

ALEXIS SANCHEZ

Amid Manchester United’s desperate need for added quality out wide, it’s been widely reported that the Red Devils are in the race to sign Barcelona winger-forward Alexis Sanchez.

The 25 year-old has been in strong form this season to find 21 goals and 15 assists in 54 appearances, including this wonder-strike against Atletico Madrid…

//www.youtube.com/embed/REmlUllpLKk?autoplay=1

But the feeling at the Nou Camp is that the Chile international hasn’t progresses as expected following his move from Udinese in 2011, where he was previously considered to be one of the brightest prodigies in world football.

Resultantly, and with Barcelona planning a summer of wholesale changes, it’s believed Sanchez will be offloaded this summer.

United are by no means his only suitors however, with Liverpool, Arsenal and Juventus all expected to rival any interest from Carrington.

Here’s a look at Sanchez’s best ten goals for the Catalans:

Liverpool, Man Utd….. England boss’ policy revealed

After a disastrous World Cup, English football is slowly on the downward spiral. The quality of football across the pitch is vast compared to countries like Germany, Argentina and even Belgium.Squad selection is vital. Picking players who are able to cope under immense pressure on the big stage is critical in order for the country to go as far as possible in the competition. For Three Lions gaffer, Roy Hodgson, this means something completely different. If you’re a player who scores 20 goals a season or is part of the tightest defence in the division, yet doesn’t play for a so called ‘big club’ you’ve got no chance. Playing for the Premier League’s top clubs is essential in Hodgson’s deluded mind. If you’re not playing for Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool or Chelsea, then an England cap is way off.In his latest move for the national side, he isn’t going to pick ever present Ryan Shawcross, nor is his going to choose QPR’s promising centre half Steven Caulker. For the upcoming fixtures against San Marino and Slovenia, Manchester United’s 20 year old defender Tyler Blackett is set to be fast tracked into the England set up. This is a player who was part of the side that conceded five against Leicester and got sent off.Now Hodgson’s checklist has been revealed for his England squad thanks to Paddy Power. Yes, England are struggling, however, for the clubs in question, one free agent is currently looking for a club. So Mr. Van Gaal, forget Falcao, get Emile Heskey in, best for both club and country!
