Craig Kieswetter has been ruled out for up to six weeks after suffering a broken thumb in Somerset’s County Championship match against Warwickshire.Kieswetter sustained the injury to his right thumb from the last ball before lunch on the final day, when he was stood up to Peter Trego, and after interval handed the wicketkeeping gloves to Jos Buttler for the remainder of the match.Dave Nosworthy, Somerset’s director of cricket said: “Obviously this is very disappointing for us at this stage of the campaign and it is also very disappointing for Craig.”This was a freak accident and with him in such good form and in a good frame of mind with the bat and gloves, it has come at a bad time. However, he goes about things in a very professional way and with a good rehabilitation programme already planned we will have him back as soon as possible.”Somerset are fortunate to have another international wicketkeeper in Buttler ready as a straight replacement behind the stumps and he will be available until England’s one-day series against New Zealand which precedes the Champions Trophy in June.Buttler and Kieswetter were set for split duties in the early weeks of the season after Buttler’s elevation to the England limited-overs role at the expense of his county team-mate. Now, Buttler will have an extended run with the gloves in order to work on his keeping ahead of England’s next one-day series.

Kundra will be suspended if guilty – Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals have said the franchise’s co-owner Raj Kundra will be suspended and have to “forfeit his shares” if he is found guilty of any wrongdoing

Rajasthan Royals statement: “Mr Raj Kundra is a minority (11.7%) shareholder, and he has no involvement in the running of the franchise”•AFP

Rajasthan Royals have said the franchise’s co-owner Raj Kundra will be suspended and have to “forfeit his shares” if he is found guilty of any wrongdoing. Kundra, who according to Delhi Police has admitted to betting on IPL games, is a minority shareholder and has no part in the running of the franchise, according to a statement issued by Royals’ chairman Ranjit Barthakur and CEO Raghu Iyer.”Mr Raj Kundra is a minority (11.7%) shareholder, and he has no involvement in the running of the franchise. We believe that [he] is a law-abiding citizen and would not act contrary to law. If, however, he is proven guilty, or has breached any regulations, he will be suspended, and will also forfeit his shares,” the statement said. “This is a strict governance procedure agreed to by all Rajasthan Royals shareholders, and it is consistent with our zero tolerance approach.”As a franchise, we have always been clear that the same rules apply to players, management or owners. As such, our actions will be consistent as in the case of the spot-fixing allegations with respect to our players.”Kundra had confessed to betting on IPL matches, including games involving his own team, Delhi’s police commissioner had said on Thursday. “Raj Kundra has confessed to betting,” Neeraj Kumar, the Delhi Police commissioner, told reporters. “He would place bets through Umesh Goenka, who is a bookie.”However Kundra indicated on Twitter that the media had “misconstrued everything”, and issued a statement reiterating that he had done nothing “for which I need to have any regrets”.* He would give up his share in the franchise, if proven guilty on any count, Kundra said: “Factually the discussions [in the media] about me are not wholly true. The version is either twisted, misconstrued or exaggerated to make it highly news-worthy.”I have always remembered that the franchise takes a zero tolerance approach to betting, spot-fixing or match-fixing and I entirely and whole heartedly endorse the same. As far as my alleged own act of commission or omission is concerned, I reiterate that I am totally innocent and in any event I wish to make it abundantly clear that if an iota of wrong doing is finally established against me I would unhesitatingly forfeit my share in the franchise.”Kundra and his friend and business partner Goenka were questioned by Delhi Police over 12 hours. He had “volunteered” to answer the police’s queries, and leave his mobile phone with them, Kundra said. “As a shareholder in Royals, the investigating team of Delhi Police deemed it fit to question me. Upon receipt of information that the police had certain questions to be put to me, I as a law abiding citizen volunteered to positively respond to the call. Needless to say, I satisfactorily replied to the queries raised by the police and they accordingly allowed me to leave after my questioning.”As the case develops, in due process, it may become necessary for the police to question me further. In the interest of justice, it is crucial that I am available in India. As such I have voluntarily retained my passport with the police and have also assured my full cooperation. Delhi Police themselves have had no grievance with regard to this and they have already stated so publicly through the media.”Kundra is now likely to be investigated by the BCCI’s committee, consisting of two retired Tamil Nadu High Court judges, which was originally appointed to look into the allegations of corruption against Chennai Super Kings official Gurunath Meiyappan, and the owner companies of Super Kings and Royals – India Cements and Jaipur IPL Cricket Pvt Ltd.Royals had suspended the contracts of Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila four days after they were arrested for alleged spot-fixing in May, and also filed a complaint against them with Delhi Police. The players were charged by a Delhi Court under Section 409 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with criminal breach of trust, following Royals’ complaint. In Royals’ statement, Barthakur and Iyer indicated that they are co-complainants in the franchise’s case against the players: “We are working hard as co-complainants to ensure that all information is made available to the authorities.”*17.00GMT, June 7: The article has been updated after Raj Kundra’s statement arrived

Desolate Clarke points finger at batsmen

If there was optimism in Michael Clarke’s voice after Trent Bridge, it had turned to utter desolation at Lord’s as Australia lost their sixth consecutive Test

Daniel Brettig at Lord's21-Jul-2013

If there was optimism in Michael Clarke’s voice after Trent Bridge, it had turned to utter desolation at Lord’s. On the receiving end of Australia’s sixth consecutive Test defeat, a sequence last experienced in the grim days of 1984, Clarke was clearly upset by a hiding that has all but ended the team’s hopes of regaining the Ashes in England.Speaking frankly of the team’s myriad batting problems and the pressure that has placed on the bowlers, Clarke also conceded the defeats were taking a heavy toll on him, and said his own vision of what the Australian team should be had been shaken by a succession of losses that is now the equal of the run that ended Kim Hughes’ captaincy when repeatedly humbled by the West Indies.”Every team I’ve been a part of that’s lost – it’s obviously been extremely tough and you probably take it more personally when you’re captain of the team as well,” Clarke said. “Our performance with the bat in the first innings was unacceptable. The wicket was very good for batting, we had a great opportunity and we let ourselves down.”The reason you play any sport is to try and win – that’s the way I have been brought up. But half of my problem I guess is that I walked into such a great Australian team that won as a habit and that was something I became accustomed to and used to. I don’t want that to change. At the moment we are not performing as well as I would like. We are letting everyone down at the moment with the way we are batting. Our bowlers are fighting hard, we are making them bowl every single day because we are not putting enough runs on the board.”Clarke tackled the matter of Australia’s batting and the terminal lack of application and patience that has repeatedly hindered the team’s efforts to build match-shaping scores. In seven Test matches since January only two hundreds have been made by Australian batsmen – Matthew Wade against Sri Lanka in Sydney and Clarke himself in Chennai.”We’ve got plenty of experience in our top seven, we’ve seen already in this series that guys can score runs against this attack,” Clarke said. “Our shot selection was poor and we just didn’t have the discipline that England had. England were willing to bat for long periods and graft through the tough times – and we certainly weren’t in that first innings.””I don’t want anybody in our team to not play their natural game and not back their natural instinct. You have to do that 100 per cent. But like it or not, when you’re playing against good opposition there are going to be tough times in your innings as a batsman and you’ve got to find a way to get through that. In my career, the way I’ve tried to get through those periods is with my defence.”Causes for Australia’s lack of consistent run-scoring have been debated for some time and Clarke has commented strongly by his own choice of career path, shelving international Twenty20 duty to better prepare for Test matches and ODIs, while also skipping several domestic T20 tournaments in order to preserve his fragile back.”I think you learn that defence at the age of 10,” Clarke said. “Obviously there are three different formats we now play and there’s times through your career in T20 cricket, or one-day cricket where you make a 50 off 25 balls or a hundred off 50 balls, that’s a great innings. But I know in Test cricket, some of the best innings I’ve ever seen in my career are guys making a hundred off 350 balls. So there’s a time and a place.”I love all three forms. My reason to retire from T20 was to focus on ODI and Test cricket. I felt my game had to improve in certain areas to stay in the team. I try to use the time that I’m not playing T20 to improve my game. Everyone is in a different boat and different age and stage of life. I can’t make decisions for other people. There is room for all three formats in the game but you must be a very good player to perform at all three formats.”The player who has best met the demands of all three formats of the game is the now retired Michael Hussey. It cannot be a coincidence that over the past 12 months Australia are yet to win an international match overseas without him.

Court stays CIC proceedings against Indian board

The Madras High Court has stayed the Central Information Commission’s proceedings on whether the Indian board is a public authority

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Jul-2013

The CIC’s hearing started in Delhi but lasted only a few minutes as the BCCI informed the bench of the stay order•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

CIC’s contradictions

January 2008: A CIC ruling on an RTI application says that the BCCI does not come under the purview of the Act as it is not a ‘public body’
July 2011: The CIC issues a similar ruling in another RTI application filed against the BCCI, stating that the board is not a ‘public authority’ under the RTI Act.
June 6, 2013: An RTI application from Madhu Agrawal demands information from BCCI and its state associations on use of government-provided facilities and payments to the government, along with details of stadiums and land owned by BCCI.
July 10, 2013:CIC issues notice to the BCCI in response to Agrawal’s RTI application. Constitutes a full bench of the Commission to hear the case on July 25 and 26
July 25, 2010: Madras High Court issues stay order on enquiry, citing two previous rulings of the CIC, which stated that BCCI was not a public body.

The Madras High Court has stayed the Central Information Commission’s (CIC) proceedings on whether the Indian board is a public authority. The stay was granted by Justice KK Sasidharan while making an interim judgement on a BCCI petition challenging the CIC proceedings.During the appeal for a stay, the board’s counsel argued that the CIC had issued the notice on July 10 though two earlier orders, passed in 2008 and 2011, had clearly held that BCCI was not a “public authority” under section 2(h) of the RTI Act and therefore was under no obligation to provide any information. The CIC, the government’s information watchdog, had sought financial details of the Indian board and its 29 member associations and started a two-day hearing against the BCCI on Thursday. The CIC was formed to bring more transparency to the working of India’s public institutions by looking into petitions from the public under the country’s relatively new Right to Information Act.The CIC’s issuing of a notice to the BCCI was yet another step by the Indian government to establish the BCCI as a public body. The BCCI is currently registered as a private society. In its notice, dated July 10, the CIC has directed the BCCI and all of its affiliated units to attend the hearing either personally or through authorised representatives. The CIC’s actions came after a Delhi resident Madhu Agrawal filed a petition asking for information on financial dealings the BCCI and its member associations had with the government over the past five years. The BCCI challenged the petition in court arguing that it did not come under the purview of the RTI Act as it did not receive any financial assistance from the government and was not a ‘public authority’.Ratnakar Shetty, the BCCI’s (Game Development) manager, cited three previous Supreme Court rulings in which the BCCI was deemed an autonomous body, and said the CIC’s move was “totally without jurisdiction”. He also questioned the procedure the CIC followed, calling it “wholly illegal” as only the board’s 29 affiliates were informed about the hearing and not the board or its members. (In fact, the board was mentioned in the CIC notice.)In Delhi, the CIC’s hearing was attended by a BCCI lawyer and representatives from five state cricket associations – Baroda, Bengal, Delhi, Himachal and Punjab. The hearing lasted only a few minutes as when asked to present its reply, the BCCI informed the CIC bench that it had obtained a stay on the petition from the Madras High Court. It is learnt that the stay was obtained late on Wednesday afternoon. Also present at the venue was former India cricketer and Member of Parliament Kirti Azad who called the proceedings a “mockery of justice.”
