Sri Lanka win with two balls to spare

Needing two off three balls, Sachithra Senanayake cut Shahid Afridi to the third-man boundary to give Sri Lanka a two-wicket victory

Angelo Mathews has not often lived up to his finisher’s tag in recent months, but he brought together all the qualities that make fine international captains, as he led Sri Lanka to the biggest successful chase in Dubai. Mathews’ hand brimmed with poise, skill and fighting nous and though he did not see out the win, he had helped bring the equation down to four off five deliveries. Pakistan believed they were still in the match in the last over, thanks to Junaid Khan’s intense spells, but Sri Lanka’s batting depth eventually helped them level the five-match series. The visitors had two balls to spare when they passed the target of 285, with two wickets in hand.Mathews’ score of 47 off 44 did not do justice to his contribution, as his calming influence was vital to the final push. He oversaw it all like a foreman at a roadworks construction site: doing little of the heavy lifting himself, but supervising and directing the operation from close up. Occasionally he chastised staff errors, like when Seekkuge Prasanna slogged dangerously at Shahid Afridi. He even pulled stunts like deliberately running slow between wickets to induce a shy at the stumps, which in turn would yield an overthrow. Mathews had hit only one four in his first 42 runs, and having eroded the target with a stream of tense runs into the outfield, he seemed to have applied the coup de grace when he twisted the equation in Sri Lanka’s favour with a four off Junaid in the penultimate over. But with four needed off the last over, he pulled Afridi straight to short midwicket.Kumar Sangakkara had struck a responsible half-century, and Tillakaratne Dilshan, Dinesh Chandimal and Nuwan Kulasekara had all played important roles to set up the finish. Dimuth Karunaratne batted way out of position at No.9 after being parachuted into the team when Lahiru Thirimanne picked up a last-minute injury, but his unbeaten 16 alongside Mathews helped keep Junaid, and to a lesser extent Saeed Ajmal, at bay.Pakistan’s innings had also been a work of consummate batting intelligence, as they hit the second-highest total at the venue and lost only four wickets doing it. Like a snowball heading down a slope, it began cautiously, gathered force through the middle and dealt considerable damage towards the end of its course. Ahmed Shehzad had been the mastermind, composing 124 unruffled, unhurried runs, before Misbah-ul-Haq contributed his almost mandatory half-century to the innings. It was Shehzad’s fourth ton in ODIs, and Misbah’s 14th fifty in 2013. Cruelly for the Pakistan captain, and really through little fault of his own, it came in yet another loss.Sri Lanka bowled better lines to induce caution from Pakistan early in the innings, but Shehzad’s measured approach appeared to have been determined before the match had even begun. Eschewing ambitious strokes, his first objective was to establish steady beat of singles and twos. Even on occasions when Sri Lanka strayed, gaps and not boundaries, were Shehzad’s priority. The only insecure moment in Shehzad’s progress arrived in the 17th over when Thisara Perera dived hard to his left at short fine leg to collect an aerial flick to the leg side that was deemed to be too doubtful to be given out by the third umpire.Pakistan fined for slow over rate

Pakistan have been fined for their slow-over rate during the second ODI against Sri Lanka in Dubai. Match referee David Boon ruled they were an over short of their target, and fined the captain Misbah-ul-Haq 20% of his match fee while handing his team-mates 10% fines.

Shehzad had struck only three fours in his first 50 runs, off 75 deliveries, and the team itself only hit seven boundaries in the first half of their innings. But when the balls had worn on a pitch that held no terrors, the scoring rate managed a steady incline, with little added risk to the batsmen. Singles and twos remained the preferred form of advancement during the middle overs, as Senanayake and Prasanna sent down 20 overs of cheap but non-threatening spin.Misbah and Shehzad’s 105-run stand set Pakistan up beautifully for their final surge, and Afridi embellished his record in this tour and against Sri Lanka by providing the final salvo. His unbeaten 15-ball 30 was instrumental in Pakistan taking 93 off the last 10 overs. Misbah remained unbeaten on 59 at the end of the innings.Dilshan and Kusal Perera were uncharacteristically watchful at the outset of Sri Lanka’s reply, and neither batsman appeared to be flustered by the relative paucity of boundaries – almost in imitation of Pakistan’s batting blueprint. The ease of their progress had promised a fruitful stand, until Dilshan asked too much of his partner. Having hit two fours off Ajmal’s first two balls in the match, he chopped the next one straight to point and called Kusal through. The direct-hit found the batsman well out of his crease for 16, and ended the partnership for 49.Dilshan didn’t survive long after that. His own run-out was more misfortune than misjudgment. His bat got stuck in the ground centimetres from safety, and he lost his grip as the ball hit the stumps.Sangakkara’s 94-run stand for the third wicket with Chandimal provided heft to Sri Lanka’s chase, and that partnership conformed to the trend of the match. It began sedately but collected momentum as it grew more substantial. The pair only made 16 off their first 33 balls together, but found freedom once Junaid’s first fearsome spell ended after the 22nd over. Working the ball more easily into the gaps and finding the boundary with increasing regularity, 66 came off their last 59 balls together – a period that set Sri Lanka back on track after the early stagnation.Junaid returned to wipe out the middle order though, finding reverse swing as he zeroed in on the stumps at pace – dismissing Perera, Chandimal and Prasanna by firing balls through their defenses.Sri Lanka had stacked their side with allrounders, however, and the move paid off. Kulasekara’s 32 from 26 helped ease a stiff asking rate before Karunaratne – Sri Lanka’s Test opener – came in to help Mathews take the visitors home.

O jogo marcou a estreia do técnico Enderson Moreira no comando do Vozão.

Festa no Castelão.

January 15 – High Court reinstates Zaka Ashraf as PCB chairman

Zaka Ashraf has been reinstated as PCB chairman by the Islamabad High Court (IHC), following a long-winded and complicated legal process. This is a remarkable turnaround of fortunes for Ashraf, who had been suspended from the post in May 2013 by the same court, after it ruled he was elected via a “dubious” and “polluted” process.Speaking to the media in Lahore, Ashraf welcomed the High Court ruling.”I respected court orders before and I respect it now, and will continue to work for the betterment of cricket in Pakistan,” he said. “Cricket is a non-political game and it is supported by millions in Pakistan. This legal process has hurt Pakistan cricket badly.”Details of the court order are yet to be released, though. It would seem, however, that Ashraf has been reinstated on the interpretation that the original appeal of Nadeem Suddle (who first contested Ashraf’s election) has been dismissed. This will only be confirmed on Thursday morning, when the full judgment is released.Ashraf was elected chairman in May, under a new constitution, in which the role of the patron of the board – at that point the president of Pakistan – had been changed. Where before the patron simply appointed a chairman for however long a term he chose, under the new constitution, the patron would recommend two candidates for the post, who would then be interviewed by a nomination committee. The nomination would then have to be approved by a restructured board of governors. In Ashraf’s case, the problem with election was at two levels. One, it was done secretively and in a hurry, ahead of the country’s general elections in which the party Ashraf derived his power from – the Pakistan People’s Party – was eventually voted out. Two, the composition of the board of governors was questionable, with no representation on it of the entire province of Punjab, Pakistan’s most populous and arguably its most dominant in terms of cricket players.Subsequently, Najam Sethi was appointed as interim chairman in June by the prime minister – the new patron of the board – Nawaz Sharif. However, Sethi was not appointed as per the specifications of the IHC, and so in July the court overturned all the major decisions taken by him and restricted his powers to the overseeing of the day-to-day administration of the board. At that point, the court also ordered fresh elections by October 18.However, with it being evident the elections would not take place by the stipulated deadline, the board’s patron, Sharif, dissolved the PCB’s governing board on October 15 and created an interim management committee (IMC), the members of which unanimously chose Sethi as its head. The PCB had been run by the IMC till date.Asked whether the PCB would appeal the judgment, Sethi said it wasn’t up to him to make that decision.”This is a question that you must ask IPC and government of Pakistan,” he said. “I was not, nor am I now, a petitioner or appelant. I was appointed by the PM. He has to decide [the] course of action.”

Peterson does not mind being 'underestimated'

There are some people involved in the upcoming South Africa-Australia tussle who are quite happy to advertise their admiration for each other: Robin Peterson and Nathan Lyon

Robin Peterson: “I don’t think you ever get a vote of confidence as a spinner in South Africa”•Getty Images

The fast bowlers are snarling at each other from afar. The batsmen are talking up their packs and their own skills are against the opposing ones. But there are some people involved in the upcoming South Africa-Australia tussle who are quite happy to advertise their admiration for each other: Robin Peterson and Nathan Lyon. The two spinners can’t seem to get enough of talking each other up. On Thursday, Nathan Lyon called Robin Peterson a “world-class spinner”, and today Peterson returned the compliment. “I have always admired Nathan Lyon. He is a quality performer,” Peterson said. “Maybe the Ashes in England would have been different if they had picked him in the first two Tests.”Lyon was sidelined for fresh-faced Ashton Agar in those two matches, who proved more of a novelty value with the bat than consistent choice with the ball. Australia lost both and went back to Lyon for the next three games, of which they drew two. Peterson knows all too well what that feels like. After winning his place in the Test XI in Perth in November 2012, Peterson played South Africa’s next six matches but after a poor performance in Abu Dhabi last October, he was dropped for Imran Tahir. The legspinner had a similarly disappointing return against India in Johannesburg two matches later and that opened the door for Peterson again. It’s been an uncertain ride.Peterson was given a vote of confidence when he was named the only spinner in the squad to face Australia. Despite that, his name remains the one most dimly lit up in the South African XI. He accepts that as the fate of the South African tweaker, who is surrounded by spitting seamers. “I don’t think you ever get a vote of confidence as a spinner in South Africa,” he said. “When you bowl behind No. 1 and 2 Test ranked bowlers in the world, I don’t think eyes are going to light up when Morne Morkel comes in, it will be the poor spinner who gets it.”But Peterson admitted that, like Lyon, if he is seen as a soft target, it allows him to sneak in under the radar where he can pose a threat of his own. “Sometimes the guys get underestimated and when they are underestimated, that’s when they are at their most dangerous,” he said. Australia have made no secret of their intention to go after Peterson, which does not worry him. They tried it in Perth, India tried in Durban and the result was wickets for Peterson.Should something similar happen in this series, Peterson hopes both he and Lyon can bank on a healthy haul. “I’m sure Nathan Lyon and myself would like to go unnoticed and pick up our two or three wickets each match but we also know at some point we’ll have to make an impact.”The second and third Tests will be played in Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, two venues where spinners could play a bigger part than usual because of the nature of the pitches. St George’s Park may be slow and low while Cape Town has been the best venue for spinners in South Africa recently, with Saeed Ajmal claiming 10 wickets in a Test there last summer.Peterson predicts those are the two venues where he could come to the fore but has not ruled out Centurion as a place where he could perform too. “Sometimes the wicket looks green but there is a bit of moisture and there can be variation as well for spinners,” he said.Last Thursday, six days before the first Test, Australia had their first practice at SuperSport Park and noted the pitch was almost indistinguishable from the outfield in colour. Today, three days ahead of kickoff, it was there but it was still quite green. The Centurion surface is often a bright shade before the match and has a healthy covering of grass but that does not mean it will only be a seamer’s paradise. It is also the pitch Paul Harris and Imran Tahir bowled in tandem for the Titans on, in a season where they won a first-class competition, so they may be a bit for everyone.A bit is all Peterson says he needs. “When you play in South Africa, you get accustomed to the wickets not really turning, so you try and create pressure with your field placings,” he said. “I don’t think your game plan ever changes as a spinner. You look to turn the ball hard and land it in the right place and if the batsman tries to hit you for six, that’s his problem but if he runs past it, happy days for me.”Even though Peterson has high hopes for both himself and Lyon in the series, he does not think Australia will risk going into the first Test with two spinners now that Shane Watson has been ruled out. “I think they’ll go for the allrounder,” he said. “You don’t want to leave yourself short in South Africa.”If you only have three seamers and one breaks down, you could end up short. It’s a massive blow for them to lose Shane. He is a guy that can take the game away with bat or ball but we know whoever replaces him will be up for it. If you’re being selected in an Australian Test squad, you should be able to step up.”That’s almost exactly the words Lyon used about Peterson. “If you’re playing Test cricket, you must be doing something right.” Peterson would agree.
