Zaheer Khan has failed to find a place in an unusually large squad for the five Tests against England starting July. Other major talking points in the 18-man squad were the return of Gautam Gambhir, who last played Tests for India in December 2012, and the inclusion of Rajasthan’s pace bowler Pankaj Singh. The touring party included the top seven that went to New Zealand, retained the two spinners, featured six quicks and one seaming allrounder, to go with Gambhir and reserve wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha.The biggest talking point was the exclusion of Zaheer. A series of injury problems had raised questions over the 35-year-old Zaheer’s ability to last a Test series and though he dispelled those worries by bowling 107 overs in the two Tests against New Zealand earlier this year, a back injury forced him to miss almost the entire India leg of the IPL. It is still unclear whether Zaheer has missed out due to the injury, or whether he has been dropped.The last time India went to England, in 2011, Zaheer broke down in the second session of the first Test, never to recover. That was the beginning of India’s dramatic slide in overseas Tests.Gambhir, another casualty of that England tour, returned to the Test squad after a year and a half despite a middling first-class season as the squad is short on experience: only two other members in the squad, MS Dhoni and Ishant Sharma, have played Tests in England. There were no other outstanding contenders for the back-up openers’ slot.Pankaj has been rewarded for several successful seasons on the domestic circuit, including 39 wickets at 22.46 in the 2013-14 Ranji Trophy. He had also been integral to Rajasthan’s run to successive Ranji titles in 2010-11 and 2011-12, and has made several impassioned pleas questioning his absence from the national squad. If Pankaj gets to play a Test, he will become the India bowler with most first-class wickets before Test debut, 300, beating R Vinay Kumar’s 241.The six quicks were joined by allrounder Stuart Binny. The only back-up batsman in the squad was Gambhir, with Saha on hand as second-choice wicketkeeper.India have not played a five-Test series in more than a decade, the last was against West Indies in 2002. India have not won a Test abroad in three years, and have lost away series to South Africa and New Zealand in the past six months, causing them to slide to No. 5 in the ranking.

أعرب المالي أليو ديانج لاعب وسط الأهلي عن حزنه الشديد بخسارة الفريق لقب كأس السوبر الإفريقي في المملكة العربية السعودية، وأكد أن الفوز بجائزة أفضل لاعب في اللقاء لا يعنى له شيئًا بسبب خسارة اللقب.

وتابع: “لا يعني لي الكثير أن أفوز بجائزة أفضل لاعب في المباراة لأننا خسرنا الكأس، كان من لأفضل أن نفوز بالكأس وأن أكون رجل المباراة وقتها سيكون الأمر جميلًا ولكن هذا لا يعني شيئًا بالنسبة لي”.

Only two batsmen were officially out as three players opted to retire before the visitors, as per the rules, declared at the end of the day.After M Vijay bottom edged a wide delivery into gully at the stroke of the first hour, Dhawan and Gautam Gambhir created a strong platform by forging a 119-run stand for the second wicket. Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli built on it by adding 64 for the third wicket, before an undefeated 74-run stand between Ajikya Rahane and Rohit Sharma lifted the Indians to 333 for 4, and deflated the spirits of the Leicestershire bowlers.With the forecast indicating afternoon showers over the next two days, MS Dhoni opted to bat. The Indians decided to field all 18 players, though the plan was to play 15-a-side on the eve of the match. The visitors’ batting XI included everyone apart from R Ashwin.Dhawan was one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 2013 for his match-winning knocks during India’s triumph in the Champions Trophy. However, he began nervously by chasing after a full and wide delivery from Anthony Ireland and edging it to third slip, only to be handed a reprieve by Dan Redfern. It was a sharp chance. Ireland kicked the air in disgust. Dhawan brought up the Indians’ fifty by slashing the medium-pacer Shiv Thakor past point for four and followed it up by going down on his knees to cover drive for another four.Dhawan remained quiet for a brief period, going 14 deliveries without scoring, but then hit four consecutive fours. However, the hosts returned after the break with Ireland and Shaikh bowling with more intensity.In the sixth over after lunch Shaikh, who has played only one first-class match, aimed a short and quick delivery into Dhawan’s ribs. Dhawan backed out, but to his surprise the ball followed him swiftly and hit him on the right elbow. Dhawan threw the bat instantly, wincing in pain, and a few minutes later he walked back to the dressing room retired hurt. The Indian team management clarified later that the batsman was fine and there was no cause for concern.Gambhir, in his first outing for India since losing his opening position to Dhawan more than a year ago, did not let the incident disrupt his tempo. He had hit his first boundary off his 13th delivery – an edgy square drive against Thakor – and seemed poised for a big score. The last Championship match Leicestershire won was the final game of the 2012 season.However, even after accounting for the quality of their opponents, the Indians wanted to clock adequate minutes in the middle and are bound to be satisfied with their returns on the first day.

New ICC president Mustafa Kamal has said that cricket’s value will be “diluted” if it goes to the Olympics. His views echo those of the BCCI and the ECB, who are opposed to the idea despite many in the ICC willing it to happen.Kamal believes that if cricket, like football, ends up sending second or third-string sides to the Olympics, it will hardly add anything to the game’s value. At the same time, he also questioned the logistical side of staging cricket at the Olympics, which usually lasts two to three weeks.”We have debated it a lot, whether we should go to Olympics,” Kamal told reporters. “Football sends B, C or D teams to Olympics, so what will we gain by sending B, C or D team from cricket? We feel that our value will be diluted if we go there. Cricket has a legacy, it has importance.”Cricket takes time. Something like a 100m run takes 9 seconds. I might need 11 seconds, so you tell me how you can send so many countries and play such a lengthy game in the Olympics?”Kamal was speaking at a press briefing shortly after arriving at the Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka where he was accorded a reception, which included BCB directors and former players.Kamal became the eleventh ICC president during the annual conference in Melbourne earlier this month, and will hold the post for 12 months. He was appointed vice-president in October 2012. He was the joint nominee of BCB and PCB, though his elevation to the post of vice-president was delayed at the time by three months since it was being debated whether the post of vice-president remained relevant in the light of the restructuring.The ICC formally changed its administrative structures at its annual conference in June 2012, which made way for the creation of the chairman’s post. The chairman will have greater executive powers and head the board; the post of president will subsequently become a largely ceremonial one, with a one-year term, and the post of vice-president abolished.Kamal said he is happy with the role. “The president’s title is really good for me,” he said. “It is an ornamental post. I will speak in conferences, give awards in tournaments and chair the ICC’s annual conference. Then after my time is up, I will hand it over to the next president.”On the day he was made president, Kamal noted that his appointment coincided with the exact day on which Bangladesh were given Test status. “This is a memorable and historic day for Bangladesh cricket,” he said. “On this day 14 years ago, Bangladesh became the 10th Test playing country. Today, a Bangladeshi becomes the 11th President of the ICC. Thank you for bestowing this honour on Bangladesh and me.”

Como o vínculo do zagueiro com o Manchester City se encerrou em junho, o defensor chega à Gávea sem custo. Sri Lanka acting assistant coach Ruwan Kalpage has handed in his letter of resignation to SLC, the board confirmed, after Kalpage is understood to have received an offer to become Bangladesh fielding coach under Chandika Hathurusingha. Sri Lanka’s national spin bowling coach Piyal Wijetunge is also set to join the Bangladesh staff in a similar capacity, and has handed in his resignation letter to SLC as well.There is still a possibility either one or both of them could be persuaded to remain within the Sri Lanka set-up, but that decision will be made by the SLC executive committee on Tuesday, CEO Ashley de Silva said. “The ExCo will acknowledge that the letters have been received, and they might decide whether to give some sort of offer to these coaches, if they want them to stay,” he said.Both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have experienced change within their coaching structures over the past few months, with Sri Lanka seemingly losing its top coaches, while Bangladesh puts together a new coaching unit under Hathurusingha.Kalpage had been fielding coach under Graham Ford, Paul Farbrace and now under acting head coach Marvan Atapattu, but now finds the board has advertised his position, which suggests the board has been unsatisfied with his work in the team. The fielding coach job is one of the three vacancies in the Sri Lanka set-up at present. Atapattu’s job is also in limbo, as is Darshan Weerasinghe’s position as the team trainer.SLC has largely been encouraging of Wijetunge’s work, but like Sri Lanka A trainer Mario Villavarayan, Wijetunge has been offered a substantially higher salary by the BCB. In March, head coach Farbrace had also been lured away from Sri Lanka by a better salary in England, though the opportunity to work with the national team of his birth-nation had also been among the motives for Farbrace’s departure.Kalpage is expected to remain with the Sri Lanka team until the end of Pakistan’s tour of Sri Lanka, which begins on Wednesday. SLC had hoped Wijetunge would work closely with Sachithra Senanayake in order to remedy his action as he had done once before in 2011. But given the uncertainty around Wijetunge’s position, head of coaching Jerome Jayaratne has instead been assigned to assist Senanayake, as the spinner undergoes a remedial course in Australia this month.Sri Lanka have a two-and-a-half month break from international cricket, following the end of the Pakistan ODI series on August 30, in which the board may firm up its new coaching set-up. If Atapattu is not chosen as head coach, Sri Lanka will have its eighth head coach – either temporary or permanent – in four years.
