India Under-19 batsman Ankush Bains made his maiden first-class century to lead a solid showing from Himachal Pradesh against Assam in Guwahati. Bains and Akash Vasisht put on 87 for the opening stand after Himachal chose to bat. Abu Nechim provided the hosts the breakthrough in the 35th over when he had Vasisht caught behind for 30. Ankit Kalsi could not hang around for long but Paras Dogra did. Dogra and Bains batted for the rest of the day, adding an unbroken 180 in 46 overs. While Dogra was unbeaten on 76 at stumps, Bains had stretched his score to 156 in his sixth first-class match. The opener faced 282 deliveries and hit 12 fours and a six.
ScorecardSeventeen-year old Virat Singh scored his maiden first-class hundred as well to steer Jharkhand to 246 for 6 against Kerala in Dhanbad. The hosts’ openers Ishan Kishan (36) and Rameez Nemat (44) gave them a solid platform with a partnership of 70 but the middle order could not build on that. Jharkhand’s key batsmen Saurabh Tiwary and Ishank Jaggi fell cheaply, and the score went from 112 for 1 to 131 for 4. Kumar Deobrat (24) got a start but could not carry on. At the other end, Virat faced 238 deliveries and hit 12 fours and two sixes to reach his hundred in the company of Kaushal Singh. Kerala, though, dismissed Virat off what turned out to be the last ball of the day.
ScorecardSeamer Rana Dutta followed up his five-for in Tripura’s previous game with his best haul of 6 for 57 as the hosts reduced Goa to 234 for 8 in Agartala. Goa were placed strongly on 89 for 1 after being asked to bat before Dutta ripped through their line-up. He took the next six wickets to fall as Goa slipped to 174 for 7, soon to become 183 for 8. Opener Amogh Desai contributed 60 before he became Dutta’s third victim. Reagan Pinto propped up Goa with an unbeaten 78, and his unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 51 with Amit Yadav had the visitors in sight of 250 after the 66 overs possible in the day.
ScorecardLegspinner Akash Bhandari took four wickets before No. 8 Deepak Punia’s unbeaten fifty helped Services recover to 235 for 7 in Hyderabad against the hosts. Services chose to bat and Soumik Chatterjee (70) and Nakul Verma (27) took their side to a healthy score of 85 for 1. Bhandari broke that partnership with the wicket of Verma. Services could not manage any decent stand after that and slipped to 161 for 7. Key batsmen Rajat Paliwal (14) and Yashpal Singh (27) could not push on from their starts; the latter was bowled by Bhandari. Punia and Abhishek Sakuja prevented further damage with an unbeaten 74-run stand. Punia struck three fours and four sixes in his 61, while Sakuja survived 79 balls for his 18.

Baroda fight back with Mangalorkar seven-for

A round-up of the Ranji Trophy Group A matches played on February 7, 2015

An unbeaten 84 from debutant Mohammad Saif led Uttar Pradesh’s recovery from 95 for 6 to a more respectable 266 for 7, but they still trailed Railways by 79 runs at stumps on day two at the Karnail Singh Stadium. The 18-year-old Saif faced 200 balls and struck 13 fours, and shared partnerships of 70 with Ekalavya Dwivedi (42) for the seventh wicket and an unbroken 101 with Piyush Chawla for the eighth. At stumps, Chawla was unbeaten on 53 off 73 balls, having struck five fours and three sixes.Railways added 14 runs to their overnight 331 for 9 before they lost their last wicket, Praveen Kumar bowling Ranjit Mali to finish with figures of 6 for 74 in 27.1 overs.UP’s reply began disastrously, with both their openers back in the hut within five overs. Himanshu Asnora and Umang Sharma steadied the innings with a 41-run third-wicket partnership before both fell at the same score, in the space of three balls. Praveen, who had promoted himself to number five, hit five fours and a six in a 36-ball 30 and added 43 with Saif before UP suffered another double-jolt, losing Praveen and Parvinder Singh in the space of 2.2 overs. The first six wickets were shared equally among seamers Krishnakant Upadhyay, Anureet Singh and Mali.
ScorecardA seven-wicket haul from Sagar Mangalorkar helped Baroda claw their way back into their match against Tamil Nadu in Vadodara. Resuming 72 behind Baroda’s first-innings score of 149, Tamil Nadu lost their eight remaining wickets for 111 runs, with Mangalorkar running through their batting to finish with career-best figures of 7 for 49. Tamil Nadu took a 39-run first-innings lead, thanks largely to B Indrajith’s unbeaten 37.Baroda lost Vishnu Solanki early in their second innings, before Saurabh Wakaskar and Hardik Pandya erased the deficit with a 41-run second-wicket stand. They then lost both batsmen at the same score, with Wakaskar run out for 22 and Pandya following 3.1 overs later, before Deepak Hooda and Yusuf Pathan saw them through to stumps.
ScorecardThe Madhya Pradesh batsmen piled on more runs and agony on the Bengal bowlers before their bowlers struck thrice to bother the visitors’ batting line-up on the second day in Indore. Bengal finished the day on 108 for 3, still trailing by a massive 406 runs.MP, 274 for 1 overnight, were led initially by opener Aditya Shrivastava, who stretched his score from 118 to 151. He witnessed the fall of two batsmen who got starts but could not convert them into big scores – Rameez Khan for 37 and Naman Ojha for 30 – as MP went past 350. Once Shrivastava was stumped, Devendra Bundela and Mohnish Mishra struck quick fifties in a stand of 97. MP declared at the score of 514 for 6 once Mishra (56 off 62) and Bundela (81 off 71) were removed by offspinner Saurashish Lahiri, who finished with figures of 3 for 105.In reply, Bengal had an early stutter when Yogesh Rawat had Abhimanyu Easwaran caught behind off the first ball of the innings. Abhishek Das and Sudip Chatterjee led them past 50 before medium-pacer Avesh Khan struck twice to remove Das for 24 and Manoj Tiwary for 8. Chatterjee, with an unbeaten 58, and Wriddhiman Saha steered Bengal past 100 and stalled the fall of wickets, but they were still left facing a steep task when the day drew to a close.: Mumbai bowlers struggle to keep Karnataka in check

Watson thought his World Cup was over

Shane Watson has admitted that he thought he had played his last World Cup match for Australia after being dropped for the Afghanistan game

Daniel Brettig17-Mar-2015

Shane Watson – “Rod Marsh at that time made it very clear what their intentions were. It’s amazing how things can turn around even quicker than I thought they would”•Getty Images

When informed by Rod Marsh that he would not be selected to face Afghanistan, Shane Watson thought his World Cup was over. If he did not allow his mind to race forward to what the implications were for his Test career, he certainly wondered whether much of the work he had done over the preceding six months had been for nothing.Watson went through all the well-worn tropes of the dumped player: the supportive hand on the shoulder from Shane Warne, the drinks duty, the impromptu press conference through an airport terminal. He handled it all with considerable grace, and was unexpectedly rewarded for it by being granted an instant recall for the Sri Lanka match at the SCG, when a dry pitch diverted selectors from their preference for Mitchell Marsh.A major partnership with Glenn Maxwell ensued, and Watson now appears to have reverted to being the selectors’ first choice for the remainder of the tournament, albeit in a new role in the middle order with Steven Smith at No.3. This all sits well with Watson, given how he had spent the better part of 72 hours pondering what life would be like outside the Australian World Cup team.”I wasn’t expecting to play, after being dropped for the Afghanistan game, for the rest of the tournament,” Watson said in Adelaide. “Rod Marsh at that time made it very clear what their intentions were. It’s amazing how things can turn around even quicker than I thought they would.”Thinking at the time that that was going to be potentially my last chance of playing in a World Cup at home I had to come to the realisation of that. But the burning desire that’s been in me since I got dropped has been something that it really lit inside of me, something that I know is going to hold me in good stead – over the next couple of years, hopefully, because I don’t want to be feeling like that again.”Part of what Watson was feeling was frustration that he had been on the verge of good scores for a long time, but been unable to harvest them. Technical tweaks had been bedded down, but his mentality was too impatient and given to challenging outfielders with blows for the fences. As Daniel Vettori proved at Eden Park, this was not sustainable.”I knew I was very, very close to be able to nail it, I really did,” Watson said. “The couple of weeks in the lead-up I just had to change a few things – one with my technique but also my mental approach to how I was going to really take on the one-day games at that time. I was just trying to take too many risks when I was batting, trying to hit the ball in the air way too much, which meant I was exposing myself and giving myself a chance of getting out – especially at crucial times when I was batting.”The lead-up to the New Zealand game, I just worked on a couple of things technically to be able to free up my game a little bit. But the mental approach definitely wasn’t exactly right. Getting out to Dan Vettori the way I did was definitely a mental error. It certainly wasn’t a technical error. I was just thinking about trying to hit the ball in the air too much. I was taking too many risks and that was a big reality check even before I got dropped.”I’m extremely grateful that Glenn Maxwell saw me as a person he could come and chat to, because I know I’ve got a lot to give with the life experience I’ve had – in and outside cricket”•Getty Images

“It hadn’t been smart enough as well, the way that I’d been batting. I was just lucky that I got another opportunity to be able show it to myself, that the things I’d made adjustments to were able to click straight away.”What helped it click was the stand with Maxwell, who allowed Watson critical room to get comfortable at the crease by finding gaps with a level of confidence that reminded the older man of simpler times in his own career. It was also a confirmation of the change he was trying to make to his own game.Add the fact that Watson had been a figure of advice and companionship for Maxwell at a difficult time in the Victorian’s personal life and it was a partnership built on solid, and layered foundations. “The thing that was most incredible to me is that he never took on someone in the outfield, very rarely,” Watson said. “He was always into the gaps, so even if he mis-hit the ball it still went in the gap for four. That shows he’s got incredible skill, to be able to hit the ball wherever he wants, maneuver the ball off world-class bowling.”From the other side of things, part of being an experienced guy in the team means I’ve experienced quite a lot in my life, especially being in and around the Australian cricket team for a number of years now. I just know I’ve been through different challenges throughout my life and my career as well, so I know it’s my duty in and around this group to be able to help guys out who are going through challenging times in their career – whether it’s on the field or off the field.”I’m extremely grateful that Glenn saw me as a person he could come and chat to, because I know I’ve got a lot to give with the life experience I’ve had – in and outside cricket. It’s really nice to be able to see when you can make a little bit of a difference with someone, who is then able to really show it out on the cricket field as well. The experience I had with Glenn out on the field is one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had.”For a while, Watson’s Cup was over. Now, it may runneth over.

Bowlers help Royal Challengers to a big win

Led by a fiery Mitchell Starc and ably supported by the rest, Royal Challengers Bangalore dismantled the Rajasthan Royals’ batting line-up with precision to set-up an important nine-wicket win in Ahmedabad

The Report by Devashish Fuloria24-Apr-2015
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details4:47

O’Brien: RCB bowlers built pressure really well

The most expensive bowling line-up in this IPL before today finally made a telling turnaround. Royal Challengers Bangalore had leaked runs at 9.55 runs an over in this IPL before today, but led by a fiery Mitchell Starc and ably supported by the rest, they dismantled the Rajasthan Royals’ batting line-up with precision to set-up an important nine-wicket win in Ahmedabad. The result was a boost for Royal Challengers as they broke away from Mumbai Indians at the bottom of the table and joined Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab in a slightly less-bothersome mid-table stack. But more importantly, it was a bowling reassurance they desperately needed.Keeping Royals to 130 for 9 on a pitch that had seen a high-scoring Super Over thriller three days back demanded a speech from the captain and Virat Kohli obliged immediately at the end of the first innings. He got the team together in a huddle and gave them a quick pep talk. The confidence was visible in the batting as the big three in their batting – Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers and Kohli himself – played with uncluttered minds to finish off the chase in 16.1 overs. That swagger wasn’t there at the start of the game when Royal Challengers had opted to bowl. Ajinkya Rahne, the leading run-getter this IPL, and Shane Watson opened the way they always do – a quiet dab followed by a powerful strike – as they added 30 in the first four overs without a fuss. In absence of swing, Starc’s pace wasn’t really making an impression – he was taken for 16 in his first two overs – but before he would come for his second spell and close the doors on Royals, a lot of work was done by the domestic bowlers.Harshal Patel started it in his first over, beating the inside edge of Rahane’s bat with a clever change of pace and trapping him front. It was followed by Yuzuvendra Chahal, Royal Challengers’ leading wicket-taker, hurrying the dangerous Watson on a pull and getting him caught at the deep midwicket boundary in the next over. Watson had hit four fours and a six in his 26 and helped Royals to 46 in the sixth over, but his departure allowed the bowlers to exert smart control.Steven Smith faced only 17 balls in the following seven overs as Royals lost three more wickets and their run rate plummeted to below seven after being at eight at the end of the Powerplay. In that period, Iqbal Abdulla ran through his overs, giving away just 28 and dismissing Deepak Hooda, Harshal and David Wiese were miserly, and even Kohli rolled his arm over. Royals just couldn’t find a weak link.Still, with Smith, Stuart Binny and James Faulkner remaining Royals would have eyed a late surge. But as Starc returned in the 18th over and got Smith to top edge his first delivery of his second spell before removing Binny in the same over, that hope dissipated quickly. The last two overs, the highlight of which was a fantastic one-handed catch by the wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik to get rid of Faulkner, brought just eight more runs and the score trickled to 130, the second-lowest by any team this IPL.
