LFC fans hail Salah’s brilliance for Egypt

A number of Liverpool fans have been reacting to a stunning run by Mohamed Salah during international duty with Egypt.

The 28-year-old has matured into one of the biggest names in world football in the last few years following his incredible performances for the Reds.

Salah has scored a remarkable 119 goals in 192 appearances for Liverpool, chipping in with 45 assists for good measure.

This season, the Egyptian has carried his side’s attack in many ways, with Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino out of form and Diogo Jota injured for several months.

It isn’t just at club level where Salah is the main man, either, with the world-class forward Egypt’s undisputed star player. He has scored 43 times in 69 caps for his country, inspiring them to the 2018 World Cup, and is mobbed everywhere he goes in his homeland.

On Monday, Salah produced a stunning Lionel Messi-esque run in during Egpyt’s 4-0 win over Comoros, with the Reds superstar also scoring twice.

Villa’s predicted XI vs Wolves

After an impressive 1-0 win over Leeds United last weekend, Aston Villa would no doubt have been expecting to make light work of the Premier League’s bottom side Sheffield United in midweek.

Instead, Dean Smith’s side put in a dismal performance as they slipped to defeat to the Blades, with David McGoldrick earning the home side all three points.

With European qualification for next season still within their sights, however, Villa will be hoping to get back to winning ways, starting with Saturday’s clash against Wolves.

The midweek defeat may prompt Smith to make a few changes, and, with that in mind, below is a look at how Villa might line up when Wolves come to town.

In goal, Emiliano Martinez will be hoping to keep another shutout after experiencing the rare feeling of having to pick the ball out of his own net against Sheffield United.

The back four should also remain unchanged, with Matty Cash still not recovered from his injury. The form of Matt Targett, meanwhile, has seen some shouts of a potential England call-up, and the left-back will surely be desperate to do well against Wolves to further stake his claim.

The midfield could see one key change, with John McGinn’s woeful performance in midweek surely warranting him to be dropped from the starting line-up, especially with the likes of Morgan Sanson and Douglas Luiz pushing for a start – Smith could opt for the latter after benching the £24.3m-rated star for the past couple of games.

That would certainly be a big call considering that McGinn has started every game this season in the Premier League bar one (when he was suspended).

Further ahead, Bertrand Traore has struggled in recent weeks to deliver an end product, with just one goal and one assist in his last eight Premier League games. That could see Trezeguet come in on the right-hand side, with Smith sticking with Anwar El Ghazi on the opposite flank having netted against Leeds last week.

Predicted XI: Martinez; Elmohamady, Konsa, Mings, Targett; Luiz, Nakamba; Trezeguet, Ramsey, El Ghazi, Watkins.

Meanwhile, Villa could recreate a magic partnership by signing this £36m-rated star…

Arsenal can Lacazette’s heir in Edouard

Arsenal could sign their perfect successor to Alexandre Lacazette in Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard.

What’s the story?

Reports over the course of the summer transfer window suggested that the Gunners were interested in signing the French striker who has been in prolific form once again this season – he’s bagged 12 goals in 24 games in all competitions.

Now, The Daily Record claim that both Arsenal and Premier League rivals Tottenham have both had the 23-year-old on their long-term watch lists, with Edouard now in the 18 months of his contract at Celtic.

Lacazette’s perfect successor

Described as being “talismanic” by his boss at Celtic, Neil Lennon, Edouard offers a similar style of play to what Lacazette currently brings to the table.

Both aren’t just your typical number nines who do their best work inside the box, instead being comfortable linking up the play with the players behind them, and having the creativity to pick passes too – you only have to look at Lacazette’s superb vision and weight of pass to Bukayo Saka in the Gunners’ 3-1 win against Southampton at the weekend to see that.

Lacazette has averaged one key pass per game in the Premier League this season, while Edouard has managed 1.3 in the Scottish Premiership. The French duo also possess a similar hunger to work for the team, with Arsenal’s man winning four total duels per match, and Celtic’s hotshot coming out on top in 3.8.

If Edu is looking for someone to come in and replace Lacazette, then he could find the perfect successor to the former Lyon man in the £13.5m-rated Edouard.

Meanwhile, Arsenal could sign another Kieran Tierney in this starlet…

Palace may rue missing out on Demarai Gray

Roy Hodgson may rue Crystal Palace’s failure to sign former Leicester City star Demarai Gray before the close of play on deadline day after he starred on his Bundesliga debut for Bayer Leverkusen.

It took just 10 minutes for the 24-year-old wide man to make his mark in the Bundesliga after he wrapped up a 5-2 win over Stuttgart on Saturday afternoon.

In stark contrast, Hodgson cut a frustrated figure in the dugout as his side slumped to a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Leeds United on Monday night and missed the chance to go above Arsenal in the Premier League table.

Devoid of their chief talisman Wilfried Zaha, Palace failed to break the deadlock, and the defeat simply exposed some of the same-old problems affecting Hodgson’s side. It sounds almost obvious, but the Eagles lacked any real cutting edge as they ultimately came up short against Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

Palace have now won just two out of their past 18 Premier League games that the Ivory Coast international has been forced to miss for various reasons.

The Eagles were reportedly interested in signing Gray in the winter transfer window, only for him to reject a move to Selhurst Park and agree personal terms with Bayer Leverkusen.

Now, that’s not to say that Gray could’ve been the perfect replacement for the absent Zaha, but there’s no doubting the fact that his presence would have gone some way towards helping to soften the blow for Hodgson.

Signing the uncapped England international would have been an almost immediate upgrade on Andros Townsend, who has dropped some clangers this season – against Arsenal, he was graded as one of the worst players on the pitch by SofaScore during the 0-0 draw with Mikel Arteta’s side.

Gray, who is currently valued at £10m via Transfermarkt, is averaging more shots per game (2) across all competitions than Townsend (0.9) this season.

Therefore, had they signed Gray, it’s hard to argue that Palace’s attack wouldn’t have improved. He has very quickly left an instant impression on the Bundesliga in such an incredibly short space of time and it looks like he will be worth every penny of the £3m Leverkusen reportedly spent on acquiring his services.

He could have been Palace’s if Steve Parish had been prepared to cough up the money. It’s easy to say with the benefit of hindsight but given the injuries to Zaha and Jeffrey Schlupp, it’s becoming increasingly apparent that the Palace owner should’ve pulled the trigger.

Arsenal must sign their new Santi Cazorla in Barcelona starlet Riqui Puig

Arsenal could find their next Santi Cazorla in Barcelona starlet Riqui Puig.

What’s the story?

The Gunners have endured a difficult start to the new Premier League season, sitting in the bottom-half of the table and struggling to score goals. And it now appears Mikel Arteta’s side are keen on making some reinforcements in the January transfer window.

The Athletic revealed: “Given the difficulty of buying in January, it may be that Arsenal need to scour the market for opportunities. There is one such potential case in Barcelona. Before the dismantling of their international scouting network, Arsenal had watched Barcelona’s young attacking midfielder Riqui Puig on several occasions.

“Puig’s recent fallout with head coach Ronald Koeman means he is likely to be available for transfer next month, with talk of interest from Leeds United. Technically, the Spaniard fits the profile of midfielder Arsenal require.”

Imagine him and Thomas Partey

Ever since Cazorla left the club, Arsenal have struggled to find someone even near to the little Spanish magician. But in Puig, the Gunners could find exactly that.

The £18m-rated ace has already earned rave reviews for his performances, with former Milan boss Gennaro Gattuso even going so far as to describing him as “spectacular” after his side played Barcelona.

And in a profile done by The Athletic back in December 2018, it said: “Puig plays on that weird tightrope like Iniesta, even as we should shun any and all comparisons. When he has the ball, he moves, makes the ball move as though they both have somewhere to go: Forward. Puig rarely plays a pass that isn’t forward.

“People talk about Arthur, a wonderful addition to the first team who, more than any other transfer, has shown up equipped to play Barça football. But he doesn’t have what Puig has, even as he is older and more accomplished. Few players do and you can’t teach it, even as you can teach proper play.”

In a midfield partnership of Puig and Partey, Arsenal could find the perfect blend of power and guile, and really set them up for the future.

How Leeds discovered Jack Clarke 2.0

Jack Clarke’s time in the Leeds senior team was an arduous one. From a moment of pure euphoria in the 2018/19 season to a hellish nightmare he couldn’t wait to escape, it’s been a difficult few years for the winger.

The youngster first broke through under Marcelo Bielsa during the Argentine’s first season at Elland Road. He caught the eye too, scoring against promotion hopefuls Aston Villa.

However, that was about as good as it got for the 20-year-old, someone who played 28 times for Leeds and scored on two occasions.

If that record tells you that he’s a £10m player, you’d find it hard to believe. Yet, with just a season of senior football under his belt, that’s the price Mauricio Pochettino paid to take him to Spurs.

Unfortunately, his career has taken a turn of the worse. Since arriving in north London, Clarke has played just three times and is now on loan at Stoke City.

That follows half a year where he was completely neglected by Leeds. Following his permanent transfer to Tottenham, he was loaned back to Elland Road.

Bielsa seemingly didn’t like his qualities, though, and he featured for only 19 minutes of their Championship-winning campaign. Clarke spent the majority of the term in their U23 side, where he cut a large pillar of frustration.

After being substituted against Stoke U23s, he refused to even shake the hand of the player replacing him. If anything summed up his attitude during that woeful loan spell, it was that.

Unfortunately for the Whites, they’ve now got a player in a similar situation – Crysencio Summerville.

Signed for a fraction over £1m last summer, the young Dutchman left regular first-team football behind for a big move – just as Clarke did when he signed for Spurs.

Yet, it has turned out much the same way. A man ready for senior action, he’s not played any since penning terms at Thorp Arch.

He hasn’t been in a single match day squad under Bielsa and despite his huge talent, he is being neglected.

It was something Dutch press picked up on towards the end of 2020. De Telegraaf (via Sport Witness), stated: “For Summerville there were opportunities as a winger, all the more because Feyenoord was not well occupied on the wings. But Summerville preferred to play for a Leeds United youth team. There he has not even played in the first team for a minute.”

It was a damning review for a player who like Clarke, is seeing his progression stalled significantly at Leeds.

There are positives in his performances for the academy side, but if anything, that just elevates why he needs to get a chance in Leeds’ first team.

Last week, he netted a fabulous hat-trick as the U23s dispatched Burnley 4-1. Summerville was the beating heart of that victory, showcasing dazzling dribbling skills and ferocious pace.

That kind of performance will come as no surprise to many, including Chris Powell. He worked alongside Summerville when he was Alan Pardew’s assistant at ADO Den Haag and had the following to say: “He’s quite a free spirit out on the wing, in a good way. He’ll excite you, he’s a bag of tricks, there’s some talent there, it’s just how it’s harnessed and what the coaches demand from him.”

Based on the two goals and three assists he registered in the Eredivisie last term, he’s certainly ready for a lot more first-team football.

Bielsa needs to unleash him before he really does mirror Clarke’s stay in Yorkshire.

Liverpool star Jota’s disappointing international display should worry Jurgen Klopp

Diogo Jota endured a night to forget in Portugal’s 3-2 win against Croatia on Tuesday night, with the Liverpool forward struggling to have any really attacking influence on the game.

The winger, who joined from Wolves in the summer transfer window, was replaced after 77 minutes of the game against Croatia and although he picked up an assist, his passing on the night was not nearly good enough.

As per SofaScore, the 23-year-old managed a pass accuracy rate of just 56%, with only 20/36 of his passes finding their mark on the evening.

He also managed to lose possession 22 times, which was the most of any Portugal player on the pitch, demonstrating that he certainly wasn’t at his best against Zlatko Dalic’s side.

The Portuguese forward has enjoyed a superb start to life at Liverpool and has already scored seven goals in all competitions for his new club.

This included an excellent hat-trick in the 5-0 away win against Atalanta, which unsurprisingly will have got Liverpool fans very excited about his future with the Reds.

This performance earned him the praise of former Liverpool forward Michael Owen, who suggested that:

“It’s a stunning hat-trick, he missed his first big chance of the day but he learned his lesson. Then it was just a masterclass, particularly the front three.

“You want to get accepted by your team, the first thing I felt moving club, you have to earn [the] respect of your team-mates.

“Got to gain the respect and get people passing to you when you’re under pressure. People are prepared to trust him, he’s a proper player.” (per Daily Mail).

However, his performances since then have been much less impressive, as he struggled to have much impact in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against Manchester City; where he picked up a 6.21 rating (per WhoScored).

Jota, who was labelled a “pressing monster” by Klopp’s assistant Pep Lijnders, also earned a poor 5.83 rating for his display in Portugal’s 1-0 defeat against France earlier in the international break.

Perhaps Liverpool fans and pundits were a little too quick to sing the praises of the £36 million-rated forward, as his disappointing international performances recently suggest that, although he started his Liverpool career on fire, fans should be careful not to hype him up too much too soon.

Liverpool: Fans react to Herbie Kane’s Reds criticism

Many Liverpool fans have been discussing some comments that 22-year-old Herbie Kane has recently made about the Anfield-based side.

The former Liverpool youngster is currently at Barnsley and was talking to the club’s official programme (via The72.co.uk) when he talked about his time at Anfield. He said that his time at the club wasn’t the best and while a lot of things were promised to him when he joined Liverpool, nothing really came of those promises later on.

He described the feeling of playing at Liverpool like playing football as kids and being the last one picked. He also revealed that being at Anfield wasn’t the best feeling for him.

The central midfielder had joined Liverpool from Bristol City’s academy. He was loaned out to Doncaster in 2018 and was later loaned out to Hull City in January 2020 as well. In October earlier this year, the 22-year-old left the club permanently to join Barnsley (as per Transfermarkt).

He made only two appearances for the Liverpool first-team and both of those appearances came in the League Cup. He has made 13 appearances for Barnsley this season.

Some of these comments from Kane were relayed on Twitter by Anfield Edition recently and many Liverpool fans gave their opinion about the 22-year-old, with one fan who is clearly fed up of Naby Keita’s injuries saying Kane is better.

Ex-Leeds ace debates ‘harsh’ emerging team news for Whites star

Football Insider have claimed that Marcelo Bielsa will bring in Liam Cooper to replace Ezgjan Alioski for Leeds United against Leicester City.

The Whites have been excellent this term after returning to England’s top flight following a 16-year hiatus, producing some excellent displays such as the draw with Manchester City and 3-0 win at Aston Villa.

Bielsa is now preparing for Monday’s tie with Leicester and the Argentine has the welcome return of Liam Cooper to his squad. The captain had been out injured and missed the game against Dean Smith’s side, but Bielsa revealed that the defender was set to return against Brendan Rodgers’ side.

What have Football Insider said about Cooper’s return?

With Cooper fully expected to come back into the starting XI on Monday evening, Football Insider have claimed that he will replace utility player Ezgjan Alioski. Ex-Leeds striker Noel Whelan, who speaks often to the website, feels that such a move would be unfortunate on the North Macedonian. He said:

“It would be (harsh), it would be but I think all the players now know and realise under Marcelo Bielsa there will be certain changes whether you win, lose or draw.

“To bring certain people in to get round pegs back in round holes, rather than square pegs in round holes. He (Alioski) has done exceptionally well, he knows his role at the club, as does everybody, that if a certain player is to be fit for a certain game, they will be dropped to the bench.

“That is what a team is all about, that is why you have a squad and you have certain players that can understand that role they have to play within the team. It’s going to be a long season, he’s going to be called upon again, no doubt.

“What he has done is shown his professionalism and he’s capable to be at Leeds United and deal with the Premier League.”

Alioski set for a new deal at Leeds

The 28-year-old North Macedonia international is now into the final months of his current deal at Elland Road. Having featured 138 times for the Whites during his time with the club, Alioski has proven to be a key member of the squad, playing in a variety of positions under Bielsa.

Football Insider broke the news of Leeds’ plans to push for a new deal, also saying that the winger remains a key player for Bielsa.
