Michael Ball says Rangers target Danilho Doekhi must adapt

Rangers target Danilho Doekhi will need to develop a nasty streak if he completes a move to Ibrox, according to Michael Ball.

Doekhi, the nephew of former Chelsea and Barcelona defender Winston Bogarde, has been linked by De Telegraaf with a move to the reigning Scottish Premiership champions this summer.

The 23-year-old made 37 appearances for Eredivisie outfit Vitesse Arnhem last season, with him scoring his first-ever senior goal in the January win over Utrecht.

Vitesse are keen to keep the central defender on their books amid summer interest from the likes of Rangers, Newcastle United, Norwich City, Fulham and Atalanta.

However, the Dutch club have suffered a blow as Doekhi has confirmed he would be open to moving to Ibrox if Steven Gerrard’s side follow up their interest with a bid.

Ball has warned Rangers fans would need to be patient if Doekhi joins the club, with the Dutchman needing to adapt his game if he is to enjoy success in Scotland.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, the former Rangers left-back said: “He is young and the Dutch style of centre-half in that he is good on the ball.

“But he needs to add nastiness to his game and it would be perfect playing for Rangers. When you’re against lower opposition in Scotland, they give everything because they want to sign for Rangers and Celtic.

“Because of that, you’ve got to be on your toes and aggressive at the right times. He’s a young kid and got the opportunity to sign for a huge team like Rangers. I’m all for it.”

Millwall open to offers for Bodvarsson

Millwall will allow centre-forward Jon Dadi Bodvarsson to leave The Den this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by London News Online, who claim that Gary Rowett will listen to offers for the 29-year-old striker in the summer transfer window, as the 47-year-old looks to free up space in his squad in order to bring in his own attacking targets.

The report goes on to state that Bodvarsson is eager to play regular first-team football next season, suggesting that he too would be open to a move away from The Den this summer.

Bodvarsson must go

Having been a Neil Harris signing for Millwall from Reading in what was a £765k deal back in 2019, it would appear to be a fair statement to make that the Iceland international has not quite lived up to expectations for the Lions.

Indeed, having played a total of 75 games in all competitions for the club, Bodvarsson has so far managed just seven goals and six assists.

Over his 38 Championship appearances last season, only 13 of which came as starts, the £810k-rated striker scored one goal, registered two assists and created three big chances for his teammates, as well as managing an average of just 0.2 shots on target and 0.2 key passes per game.

These returns saw the 29-year-old earn a disappointing seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.64, ranking him as Rowett’s fifth-worst performer in the second tier of English football, out of all 27 Lions’ players to have featured in the competition.

As such, it would appear highly advisable for Rowett to move the centre-forward whom the Birmingham Live writer Ryan Leister dubbed a “powerful” player on to pastures new this summer, as Bodvarsson’s returns simply do not warrant the £10k-per-week wages he is reported to earn at The Den.

Furthermore, with the money generated from his potential sale, in addition to the money that would be saved on his salary, waving goodbye to the Icelandic hitman should afford Rowett a decent amount sum to bring in a more cost-effective attacking option this summer.

Rangers tipped to swoop for Santiago Moreno

Rangers have been linked with a move for Deportivo de Cali winger Santiago Moreno recently and former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has tipped him to be a hit in Steven Gerrard’s side should he make the summer switch to Ibrox.

The Gers were linked with the Colombian youngster by The Telegraph earlier this month, with Southampton and Leeds United also touted with an interest in the 21-year-old, whose performances have earned him comparisons with Liverpool star Sadio Mane.

When speaking to Football Insider recently, Campbell suggested that it would be a “masterstroke” by Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson if they were able to sign him this summer, saying:

“It sounds like it could be a really smart signing.

“They have gone down that route before and got a lot of bang for their buck in Morelos.“Getting another guy in from Colombia could be great. He will be able to relate to Morelos and they will both speak the same language. They could really help each other off the field.“I think it would be a masterstroke signing in all honesty.“Of course he has to have quality as well. He has to be able to add to the fantastic squad Steven Gerrard already has up there. If Rangers manage to get that one over the line, I am sure he will do just that.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Rangers transfer rumours and news!”]Moreno appears to have plenty of potential as, despite being just 21, he has already made 50 senior appearances for Deportivo de Cali, in which he has contributed an impressive 10 goals and seven assists. The winger predominantly features on the right-hand side and could compete with Ianis Hagi in that position in Gerrard’s side next term, as the Gers are arguably low on natural right-sided options other than the Romania international.[freshpress-quiz id=“593776″]Whilst reports have suggested that he will cost at least £2.6m this summer, he is clearly highly-rated in Colombia and could add some real strength in depth at Ibrox, which Gerrard will need next season if his team are to be a success in domestic and European cup competitions as well as the Premiership. In other news… Rangers dealt huge transfer blow with “fantastic” star, Gerrard will be fuming

Newcastle takeover insight

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has dropped a big claim on the potential takeover of Newcastle United after some latest insight was shared from the parties involved.

The Lowdown: Latest takeover insight

As per Football Insider, a source has shared that all parties involved in the deal are still fully committed and that there is growing hope that it will be concluded by the end of July following their arbitration case against the Premier League.

The North East club are privately confident that the top flight will approve the bid after the hearing takes place, suggesting that they believe that the results will go in their favour.

The Latest: Maguire on takeover

Speaking to Football Insider in reaction to the news from their source, Maguire, who is an expert in the field of football finance, has claimed that if the Tyneside club do get the green light in terms of the takeover, then the deal could well be pushed through straight away, and believes that that is what the Magpies would want to do:

“As soon as they get the green light, there’s no reason the deal can’t go through straight away.

“A bit like the Ancelotti [to Real Madrid] deal, where there’s a will, there’s a way. You can get these things through very quickly because the accountants and the lawyers will simply work 24/7.

“Does PIF have to raise the cash? No, they’ve got the cash. It’s as simple as transferring it from one person’s account to another.

“Would they want that to be as soon as possible? Yes, because every day you delay is a day when you’re not able to go into the transfer market.

“Get it done and you can immediately start to utilise some of that big budget for next season.”

The Verdict: Newcastle will want takeover done as soon as possible

Given that the new season would be fast approaching by the end of July, and that Steve Bruce’s team would already be deep into the summer transfer window, there is no doubt that the Toon would want the takeover to be completed as soon as possible if given the go ahead.

NUFC will want to know what kind of calibre of player that they would be able to go for, and also how much money they would be able to spend, as their transfer kitty would increase dramatically if the money came through from the takeover.

However, this all depends on the results of the arbitration case of course, which is not guaranteed to go in the way of Newcastle, despite the reported confidence from the parties involved.

Nonetheless, the Magpies will ideally not want any uncertainty with regards to the takeover going into the new campaign, in order for them to be as best prepared as possible.

Rangers dodged a bullet with Rhian Brewster

Rangers were heavily linked with signing Rhian Brewster in the summer of 2020 but considering he has scored zero goals since his switch to Sheffield United, it seems clear that Steven Gerrard dodged a bullet when he opted to move to Bramall Lane rather than Ibrox.

After an impressive loan spell with Swansea City in the Championship, there was plenty of interest in Brewster ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, including from Rangers, who were linked with a loan move for the former Liverpool youngster.

However, he would complete a £23.5m move to Sheffield United, who were unable to match their performances from their first campaign back in the top-flight and ended up finishing rock bottom of the Premier League last season, with Brewster’s performances a huge disappointment throughout the campaign.

In 27 Premier League appearances for the Blades, the 21-year-old would contribute no goals or assists, averaging a shocking 6.17 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Rangers transfer rumours and news!”]

It is no surprise that Gerrard was originally interested in bringing the young striker to Ibrox, as he will have managed him during his time working with the Liverpool academy, and was one of several experienced coaches at Anfield to sing his praises earlier in his career, saying:

“Everyone has seen it all over the world that Rhian is capable of scoring goals.

“You have to enjoy the plaudits but not get too high and not start believing in all the hype. You have to keep showing everyone what you are about.

“In football, people forget pretty quickly, both the good and the bad. You are only as good as your last game.

“We all know he has got the talent and the ability.”

Another former coach of Brewster’s, Dan Seymour, dubbed the youngster “exceptional” and suggested that he was one of the most talented players to ever come through his Shield academy, but unfortunately, the young Englishman was unable to live up to his praise last season and endured a nightmare campaign with the Blades.

Whilst it is difficult to know whether he would have had more success in a title-winning side rather than a relegated side, his less than impressive performances at Bramall Lane suggest that Rangers dodged a bullet in not signing him last summer.

Man City fans slam Rodri vs Brighton

Many Manchester City fans have been left to slam the display of Rodri in their 3-2 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League on Tuesday night.

Pep Guardiola’s men took the lead very early on through Ilkay Gundogan before a Joao Cancelo red card practically turned the game on its head.

Phil Foden managed to put the visitors 2-0 up with a stunning solo goal before the Seagulls wrestled into a lead before the final whistle blew.

Rodri found himself constantly overrun in the heart of midfield, losing out on seven of his duels, as the Spain international also failed to record a single key pass, and lost possession of the ball on no fewer than on 15 separate occasions in the match, the most out of any outfield player for the Sky Blues (Sofascore).

Manchester City fans on Rodri display

These MCFC supporters slammed his performance on Twitter, with one even going as far as to claim that the 24-year-old was ‘shocking’:

Fry claim on Rangers target Clarke-Harris

Barry Fry has exclusively told Football FanCast that Peterborough are expecting bids for reported target for Scottish giants Rangers, Jonson Clarke-Harris, this summer.

Clarke-Harris only joined Posh last summer, but has performed goalscoring heroics at London Road this season to put Peterborough on course to end their eight-year wait to return to the Championship.

The former Bristol Rovers man has scored seven goals in his last seven, taking his total to the campaign for 29 in League One, four ahead of his closest rival, Charlie Wyke, in the race for the Golden Boot.

Clarke-Harris has previously played in the Championship with Rotherham, and Fry confirmed that four second-tier sides tried to sign the Posh striker in January.

But with Peterborough well-placed in the thick of a promotion race, they rejected all offers, although recent reports believe that the 26-year-old could be lined up as a replacement for Alfredo Morelos at Rangers, with recently relegated Sheffield United also keen.

Peterborough’s Director of Football told Football FanCast:

“He’s got 29 goals this year. He’s been magnificent leading the line, and he’s done exactly what we thought he would do and long may it continue.

“There was a lot of interest in him in January, four clubs in the Championship came in for him, but we turned them all down. You don’t sell your best players in January if you want to go up. There will be further interest in the summer, depending on what league we are, but we will get a lot of offers.

“He deserves to be at a bigger club and if he was at a bigger club he would score the goals he scored this year because he’s a goalscorer.”

Ryder plays down Wilson injury

Callum Wilson will miss the remainder of Newcastle United’s season with a hamstring injury.

The lowdown

The 29-year-old picked up the injury in the closing stages of Newcastle’s 4-2 win away to Leicester City on Friday night, although the £77,000-a-week striker was able to finish the game.

Wilson has been a vital player for the Magpies this season following his arrival from Bournemouth last summer for a fee of £20m.

His brace at the King Power Stadium took him to 12 goals overall for the campaign – that’s more than double the tally of Joelington, his nearest challenger in the Newcastle ranks with five. His five assists are also a squad-high.

Wilson has already missed seven matches with a hamstring issue in 2021, though, and Newcastle picked up just three points from a possible 21 in his absence.

The latest

Chronicle Live correspondent Lee Ryder has offered Newcastle fans some reassurance on the striker’s fitness, tweeting: “It’s understood Callum Wilson injury not serious and precautionary”.

Fulham’s 2-0 defeat against Burnley on Monday night confirmed both their relegation and Newcastle’s survival, so perhaps this is merely a case of ensuring the Magpies’ star man is 100 per cent fit and firing for the new campaign.

The Toon host champions-elect Manchester City on Friday before ending the campaign against Championship-bound duo Sheffield United and Fulham.

The verdict

The initial concern for Newcastle fans may have been the recurrence of the injury. Indeed, The Athletic journalist Chris Waugh said that it would be ‘understandable’ to worry that Wilson ‘could become susceptible to similar problems in the future’.

However, Ryder’s update should ease any such concerns for now, especially with the Magpies’ top-flight status for 2021/22 being confirmed and now plenty of time for Wilson to recover fully over the summer.

In other news, could Newcastle break their transfer record this summer to sign this wantaway striker?

Patson Daka: Moyes’ dream West Ham forward?

An encouraging update has emerged in West Ham United’s mooted pursuit of Patson Daka this week…

What’s the word?

According to Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur, the Irons haven’t given up hope of securing the RB Salzburg sensation despite interest from sister club RB Leipzig.

Back in January, the East London outfit were originally linked to the 22-year-old following the departure of Sebastien Haller, who departed for Ajax in a £20m deal, as per the Mirror.

Now it appears that David Moyes seems keen to revisit the target when the transfer window reopens this summer, though any move could cost the Hammers in the region of £25m.

Perfect striker?

It’s well-known that West Ham will look to sign another forward to bolster Moyes’ frontline this summer and Daka would certainly be some statement.

The Irons have every chance of securing him now, too, having qualified for the Europa League, which will make them an instantly move attractive destination for many of their targets.

Since the turn of the year, the Scotsman has only been able to call upon the injury-prone Michail Antonio to lead his line but his profile could provide clues into the sort of striker that he wants to sign.

Daka has to be amongst the most perfect of options.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-and-the-latest-gossip-gsb-moyes-striker-future-signings” title= “Read the latest West Ham news, transfer rumours, gossip and more!”]

“He is a modern centre-forward, quick, capable of working hard and making the difference because he is skilful and has good movement,” suggested ex-Zambia head coach Herve Renard.

Whilst he has earned lofty comparisons to Premier League great, Thierry Henry.

“When I saw Patson Daka, what came into my mind is this guy is the next Thierry Henry – and in no time he has proved it,” once claimed his former Power Dynamos manager Dan Kabwe before further adding: “He is an intelligent boy and full of talent.”

The £18m-rated marksman has been in electrifying form this campaign, providing a whopping 34 goals and 12 assists in 42 appearances in all competitions, via Transfermarkt.

That’s one direct goal contribution every game, or once every 63 minutes.

Daka also works incredibly hard off the ball, drawing further inspiration to why he might be a perfect fit under Moyes. He averaged 1.2 tackles per game across both European competitions this term, via WhoScored. And despite it being a small sample size, it is a significant feat for a centre-forward.

By comparison, Antonio averaged 0.3 tackles per league game this term, and he’s considered to be a big workhorse in this current side, so Daka’s returns speak volumes.

This has even been reinforced by his current boss Jesse Marsch, who claimed: “He is a great lad on and off the pitch, he is hardworking and he is a little fast. It’s a just lot of fun working with him and I hope he continues with this development he has a lot of potential, he is just a fantastic player.”

A player of this calibre would surely have no problem in adapting to the fast pace of the Premier League and in beating Leipzig, Sullivan and co could land themselves a masterclass.

They must sanction a £25m move for the prolific marksman this summer.

Why Rangers should sign Carlos Mendes Gomes

Rangers have been linked with Morecambe winger Carlos Mendes Gomes recently and the youngster could prove to be a superb addition to Steven Gerrard’s side at Ibrox next season.

According to the Scottish Sun, Rangers could look to sign the 22-year-old after his impressive season with Morecambe in League Two and he would be available on a free transfer, due to his contract with The Shrimps set to expire at the end of the season.

Gomes is a product of Atletico Madrid’s academy but would move to West Didsbury in 2016 after failing to make the grade with the Spanish giants, before joining Morecambe in the summer of 2018.

Since then, he has made 83 appearances for the Sky Bet League Two side, in which he has contributed 14 goals and three assists, averaging a solid 6.88 rating for his performances in England’s fourth tier.

However, he has burst into life under Derek Adams this season, with 12 goals and one assist in 38 league appearances, which has helped the Lancashire side establish themselves in the playoff positions as we approach the final few games of the season.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/rangers-news-ibrox-steven-gerrard-ross-wilson-gers-rfc” title=”Latest Rangers news, transfer rumours and more!”]

In a recent interview with freelance journalist Adam Goodwin, Mendes Gomes discussed his time at Atletico Madrid and claimed that during his time in Spain, he had former Real Madrid right-back Achraf Hakimi ‘on toast’ in the Madrid derby.

Considering Hakimi’s superb performances on loan at Borussia Dortmund last season earned him a £36m move to Inter during the summer, it is impressive that Mendes Gomes was able to outperform him when they were younger, and emphasises the potential that he possesses.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776”]

Therefore, considering he will be available on a free transfer this summer, Ross Wilson should definitely try and bring him to Ibrox, as he could prove to be an excellent addition to Gerrard’s side next season.
