No debacle at Tunbridge Wells

Ravi, Jesse, Hoddy and Napes. As rampant seam attacks go, it’s not really a patch on Josh and the Three Mitches. But, for most of the patrons at the Nevill Ground in Tunbridge Wells, that was a somnambulantly pleasing fact.Thirty miles and several light-years from the scene of yesterday’s crime at Lord’s, life went on as normal in Kent’s most idyllic of outgrounds. Kent churned out the runs, 352 of them on the day, for the loss of four wickets. Essex stuck wilfully to their task, outplayed on the day maybe, but proving positively incisive compared to the horrors being endured by Sussex’s and Glamorgan’s bowlers at Horsham and Colwyn Bay.Fourth versus eighth in the second division of the LV= County Championship brought with it an excuse not to be drawn to the edge of one’s seat, or chew one’s nails to the quick. Instead it was an excuse to sit back and soak in, as Kent closed on an imposing 420 for 4, a lead of 160 leaving them well placed to exact revenge for their five-wicket defeat on a Chelmsford minefield in April. The spectators who bimbled around the boundary’s edge included plenty refugees from England’s Ashes debacle: horrified survivors of that grim fourth day, as well as mildly bewildered holders of those now-redundant fifth-day tickets, all booked up but with nowhere to go.In between their perusals of the second-hand bookstall at midwicket, or their chats with Jack Russell – the Gloucestershire and England legend was incongruously in situ, selling signed copies of his painting compilations – the faithful were rewarded with a meandering day of accumulation.None of Kent’s batsmen made fewer than Sam Northeast’s 43, but Daniel Bell-Drummond’s 81 from 71 balls – 46 of which had come in his first-evening onslaught – remained the clubhouse-leading score by the close. His aggression and timing was matched, in the gloaming, by the evergreen Darren Stevens, who enlived the evening session with 11 fours and a fierce six over midwicket off David Masters, as he and Ben Harmison laid into the new ball to carry the total past 400 in an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 117.In between whiles, Kent’s batsmen took turns to drive the innings along without ever seizing the day by the scruff of the neck. Bell-Drummond looked the likeliest to do so, but with the third ball of his second spell, Ryder bowled him off a big inside-edge, his deceptively lolloping run-up giving way to a command of swing and seam that has now earned him 34 wickets at 23.76.Rob Key, restored to the opener’s role that he had relinquished during his last stint as captain, made a confident 71 – a lower-octane affair than his 87 against the Australians at Canterbury last month, maybe, after which he had joked that he wasn’t paid enough to face Mitchell Johnson at full tilt, but one which ended amid the threat of unexpected bounce. Graham Napier kicked one off a good length and Key, visibly taken aback, flapped an uncommitted pull to a stooping Nick Browne at square leg. That ought to have been Napier’s second of the day after Joe Denly had been dropped by Ryder at slip before he had scored. But he was quickly into his stride thereafter, clipping Napier through midwicket to get off the mark, and moving serenely along to 69 from 121 balls before Ravi Patel, the left-arm spinner, bowled him through a loose drive.Northeast, by that stage, had lost his leg stump to Jamie Porter, Essex’s quickest bowler whose methods were less suited to the conditions than those of his team-mates – his 18 overs were milked for 105 runs, including a loose morning spell in which Key and Bell-Drummond had picked off the boundaries at will.”I always enjoy playing at Tunbridge Wells, it’s always a decent wicket and enjoyed spending some time out there today,” said Denly at the close. “It’d be good to get one over Essex, and we are in a very strong position. Hopefully tomorrow we can kick on again, get a good lead and hopefully put them under some pressure.”It was very slow wicket,” he added. “Early on, Keysy and Deebs [Bell-Drummond] played very well with the newer harder ball, but when it got softer it was pretty hard to score and time, and my innings was a little bit scratchy. But at the end when the new ball was taken, Stevo and Ben were able to score a bit more freely and put us in a good position.”

Tottenham set £9m asking price

Tottenham are locked in negotiations with Ajax as they try to agree a fee to sign defender Jan Vertonghen, according to The Daily Mail.

The Belgium international is highly-rated, and after leading the Amsterdam Arena side to back-to-back titles is ready to leave the Eredivisie for a bigger club.

With one year left on his contract Spurs are thought to have offered £7 million, but the Dutch champions are holding out for £9 million for their captain.

Vertonghen and his agent Nakhli Mustapha were in attendance at White Hart Lane on Sunday to witness Spurs seal fourth place with a 2-0 win over Fulham, and a deal to bring the centre half to north London is thought be close if the teams can agree a fee.

Arsenal are also thought to be interested in Vertonghen, who looks Premier League bound this summer.

DVD Review – ‘UNITED’

Having read endless books on the Busby Babes and the terrible events of Munich, you can forgive me for thinking a film about the disaster would bring little more to the table than I already knew; however ‘United’ surprised me, not only as the excellent portrayal of that harrowing day, but brought to life the real characters and personality of the players involved. It also for the first time emphasised the importance of the role that Jimmy Murphy (brilliantly portrayed by David Tennant) played in keeping the football club together, in what was its darkest hour.

‘United’ was beautifully put together and the filming encaptured what 1950s England was like in every regard. The filmmakers had clearly done their research and the portrayal of the muddy pitches, the back streets of County Durham, to the watering holes in Manchester brought authenticity to the proceedings and this sense of realism had you gripped. The filming of the actual crash, whilst harrowing, was done tastefully and appropriately, without the need to over dramatise the shocking event. It is clear that no stone was to be left unturned in this production which showed great sensitivity to all those involved with the event.

I suppose it would have been easy to do a Hollywood-esque blockbuster around the crash, like so many other tragedies have been depicted before, but ‘United’ wasn’t about that but instead focusing on the human response to tragedy and how a community came together as one to fight through it. It is a deeply moving movie and I wholeheartedly recommend that everyone watch it.

Caption Competition: The End of the Road at The Etihad

Manchester City won the 2011/12 Premier League title at The Etihad last weekend, but it was far from straightforward against QPR.

Not only did Man City come from behind to beat Queens Park Rangers, but they also came up against a certain Joey Barton.

It’s fair to say that Barton lost it in the second half, as first he elbowed Carlos Tevez, then he kicked Sergio Aguero and as he left the pitch he tried to square up to Manchester City’s captain Vincent Kompany.

It wasn’t Barton’s finest hour and he damaged his chequered reputation even further with his comments towards Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker on Twitter.

Here is Barton squaring up to Kompany, but what is being said between the two?

Midfielder sets Chinese transfer record

Chinese Super League leaders Guangzhou have reportedly smashed the nation’s transfer record to land Fluminense midfielder Dario Conca.Conca, two-time reigning player of the season in Brazil Serie A, has signed a three-and-a-half year deal with Guangzhou worth US$10 million, according to reports from China.

His transfer eclipses that of former record-holder and new team-mate Cleo, who signed with Guangzhou earlier this year for US$4.65m.

“This is a good offer for the club, and words cannot describe what it represents to Conca. It will allow him and his family financial security in just two and a half years,” Fluminense coach Abel Braga said, according to Brazilian website Globoesporte.

“This offer will put him in the top ten highest-paid players in the world. Let us hope that it happens. He is a guy who has completely identified with the club but this is a unique opportunity.”

Conca, 28, led Fluminense to the Serie A title last term, scoring nine goals in 38 appearances.

The midfielder joined the club on loan from Argentine giants River Plate in 2008 before making a permanent switch one year later.

David Moyes eyes up David Beckham loan

Everton manager David Moyes has admitted that he would be keen to sign veteran England midfielder David Beckham on loan from Los Angeles Galaxy if he opts for another spell back in Europe.

The 35-year-old has headed to the San Siro for stints with AC Milan in the last two seasons and Moyes is ready to move if Beckham decides to complete a hat-trick.

"I would hope that if David wanted to come he would pick up the phone and call me," Moyes said.

"If he wanted to come back to the Premier League he would only need to phone me or Phil Neville and we would be here for him.

"He knows how to get hold of Phil and he knows how to get hold of me.

"We would have to look into it financially, but if he came and said to me I would like to come and play I would have to go to the chairman and ask if we could do it – if we think we can make it work by selling enough shirts!"Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email

Which young player has shone the brightest at Swindon this season?

With Swindon sitting pretty at the top of League Two you could easily say it has been a brilliant season for the Robins and one of the major factors behind our success this season has been the young players who have impressed after being introduced to the first team.

As this superb season draws to its close now comes the almost impossible task to select just one.  Let’s have look at some of the main candidates for the award.

1.Wesley Foderingham

The 21-year-old goalkeeper has firmly established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet after a fabulous season in goal, becoming a fan favourite, making vital saves that have put us top of the table. When he signed on loan from Crystal Palace in October no-one had really heard of the young shot stopper but after keeping five clean sheets in his first five matches Robins fans took a real shine to him. When January rolled around I expected an extension to his loan but I was delighted when we managed to sign him a permanent deal. With 14 clean sheets, he has easily been the best signing we made in January, with a particularly favourite being his penalty save against Cheltenham in a top-of-the-table clash.

2. Callum Kennedy

The young left-back was a solid first teamer at the beginning of the season but he lost his place after a few weeks with Allessandro Cibocchi taking the reins on the left side of defence. That is how it stayed until he was recalled for the FA Cup match against Huddersfield where he put in, arguably, his best performance of the season. Until recently he has been in and out of the first team but when called upon he has been a very reliable left back. With the experienced Jay McEvely on loan from Barnsley and the news that Jay is likely to sign for us in the summer, it could signal less chances in the starting line-up for Callum. However he deserves his selection after an impressive season.

3.Billy Bodin

I have chosen the young forward as even though he has impressed away from the County Ground.  He spent most of the earlier part of the season on-loan at Torquay but when he returned for a few weeks he was brilliant even scoring against Southend and Crawley which was a proud moment for the Swindon-born forward with his being Paul Bodin being a Swindon legend and the youth coach at Swindon. He is currently spending the rest of the season at Crewe but having played the start and the middle of the season at Swindon he qualifies and deservedly so after his six goals which is a great return for any in their first season in the football league.

Young player of the season for me goes to Billy Bodin, as even though he hasn’t been in the team week in and week out, he has developed the most and has become the striker all Swindon fans wanted him to become while also racking up a fair few goals this season. He tries his best in every game and has done enough to earn him a new contract at the end of the season unless, of course, Torquay or Crewe try and pry him away from us but I’m sure if he is offered a contract by Di Canio he will take it. If Billy continues to work hard and improve he will go down to be a Swindon legend like his dad and could well have a goal scoring record that better than that of Charlie Austin or Simon Cox. For the present I don’t think Billy would look out of place in a top League One club but for now playing for Torquay and Crewe has helped him as a player and hopefully young Billy will be ready to be involved in the squad more next season in League One.

Copa Libertadores final: Santos 0 Penarol 0

Santos and Penarol played out a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores final in Montevideo, Uruguay, on Wednesday.Despite creating the better chances, Santos will be glad to be on level terms ahead of next Wednesday’s clash in Sao Paulo, Brazil, between the two sides.

Uruguayan side Penarol, five-time Copa Libertadores champions, were kept in the game at their Estadio Centenario by a strong display from goalkeeper Sebastian Sosa, while wunderkind Neymar was a constant threat for the visitors.

Penarol had a late goal from substitute Diego Alonso disallowed for offside, and they will now have it all to do in the second leg at the Estadio Municipal Paulo Machado de Carvahlo.

More than 60,000 spectators packed into the Centenario on Wednesday to see the match, with the hosts looking to claim their first Copa Libertadores since 1987 while two-time champions Santos have not won the event since claiming back-to-back titles in 1962-63.

Carlos Tevez to miss Wolves clash

Manchester City's top scorer Carlos Tevez will miss this weekend's game against Wolves with the thigh injury he sustained in the 3-0 home defeat to Arsenal.

The Argentina international had to be substituted early in the second half after suffering a dead leg.

Manager Roberto Mancini has also allowed the 26-year-old to travel to Argentina to visit his family before returning to Eastlands on Monday.

Meanwhile, Mancini has called for Argentina to use Tevez sparingly, saying:"International football is a problem for Carlos.

"Argentina don't play games in Europe but in South America, Japan or Australia and this makes it difficult for him.

"He arrived back from the last international break tired. He needs time to recover.

"Argentina have a friendly against Brazil in November, but I hope for that game he can stay here. It would be better for him and his country."

Roque Santa Cruz had hinted earlier in the week that Tevez wanted to leave City, but Mancini said of the rumours: "I don't know whether he will stay here for the next ten years or return to Argentina then, but I'm not worried by it at the moment."Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email
