Since leaving Manchester United and his playing days behind, it's safe to say Wayne Rooney hasn't enjoyed the greatest of managerial careers.
Sacked by Birmingham City after just a matter of months, he was looking for a brighter start to his tenure as boss of Plymouth Argyle. Unfortunately, it got off to a nightmare start for one of England's greatest-ever players.
Plymouth were dispatched 4-0 by Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday, with Rooney now left to lick his wounds and hope that another disastrous managerial stint isn't set to follow.
As a player, there wasn't much disaster. Wazza – as he was affectionately known – scored 253 goals in 559 games for United, played 120 times for England and won the Premier League five times. That's not bad at all, is it?
So, could United sign their next Rooney this summer? They've already agreed a deal to sign 16-year-old Arsenal sensation Chido Obi Martin but there's a more reputable name now being linked with the club.
Man Utd's hunt for another striker
The Red Devils may have welcomed Joshua Zirkzee to the club this summer but recent reports suggest that they are not done there.
The Daily Star claimed over the weekend that they were plotting a £50m bid for Brighton and Hove Albion centre forward Evan Ferguson.
Ferguson has previously been touted at £100m so this would be a bargain in comparison. That said Brighton have proven to be stern negotiators in years gone by so it would no doubt be hard to prise him away from the South Coast.

How Ferguson compares to Rooney
As a spritely teenager, Rooney was a fierce talent. He had pace, he had power, he had generational talent capable of scaring the very best defenders in world football.
It was at Euro 2004 that he made a name for himself, leaving the tournament despite England's early exit as a genuine superstar. The career that followed well and truly proved that.
Ferguson may not have burst onto the scene in quite the same explosive manner but he is one of the best up-and-coming forwards in the game.
Making his senior debut in Irish football at the age of 14, he moved to Brighton at 16 and has been making steady progress ever since.
The teenager has scored 12 times in 47 Premier League appearances. Not a bad record for someone so young. In fact, it's up there with some of the best we've seen in the division.
Brighton and Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson.
Indeed, after scoring in Brighton's 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest last November, the Republic of Ireland international matched a feat achieved by a certain Rooney.
The accomplishment? An 11th Premier League goal of 2023, ensuring he went record with Wazza's record in the list of the most Premier League goals scored by a teenager in the same calendar year.

There are more similarities than just that record though. Like the England great, Ferguson is a "devastating" talent – as he was described by one analyst on X – boasting similar physical attributes.
He can run the channels, has an explosive edge to get himself into goalscoring positions and is a sensational presence in the box.
You may well argue that signing another young forward when you have Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund in your ranks is a pointless venture. We'd perhaps be inclined to agree with that viewpoint. However, if INEOS did pursue a move for Ferguson as well, they could be staring at a future Premier League great.

The England international scored her first goal of the Women's Super League season but the Gunners had to settle for a point after Melvine Malard's late equaliser at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday. The north London side had 19 shots to the hosts' six and 40 per cent possession, leading Russo – who left United for Arsenal in 2023 – to suggest it felt like two points dropped rather than a point gained.

She told Arsenal's website: "I think we’re disappointed not to take the three points. We have really high standards and we want to be winning and we want to be competing so, disappointed. But lots of positives to take and we’ve got a massive block coming up so it’s a quick turnaround now for Brighton.
“I was just saying before that I’m my own biggest critic at times and I want to be scoring as much as I can so to get one today was really nice and nice to celebrate with all the girls. United are a top side. They’ve got lots of structure and lots of discipline, especially at the back, and it’s tough to break down but I think we took our goal and momentum swung.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Arsenal are already seven points behind table-toppers Manchester City just six games into the season. But there were plenty of positives from the game, Russo is up and running for the campaign, and there is still a long way to go.

She added: “We know the talent we’ve got in the changing room. We know that we’ve got the style to match it so it’s just about really pushing on now. We’ve got a massive block ahead of us and we can’t take our foot off of the gas at all.”
The Hobart Hurricanes overcame a sluggish batting display and a thunderous innings from Glenn Maxwell to take victory against the Melbourne Stars as their bowling attack delivered, again. At 3 for 112, the Stars needed 53 from 44 balls with Maxwell having dominated a stand of 72 in seven overs alongside Nicholas Pooran. However, they fell in the space of four deliveries and the game changed. The Stars were a specialist batsman light in their chase after Nic Maddinson suffered an ankle injury in the opening over in the field and the lower order had too much to do against excellent death bowling especially from Nathan Ellis. In the end the Stars fell a long way short. The Hurricanes’ innings never really got out of second gear except for a brief period after the Power Surge (which was a complete failure for them) but was anchored by the display of top-scorer Dawid Malan who made 75 off 56 balls. Crucially the No. 1 T20I batsman did not give it away until the very end, while Colin Ingram’s 26 off 12 balls would end up proving vital.Maxwell’s brilliance cut short The Stars did not make a good start to the chase as Marcus Stoinis and Andre Fletcher fell in the third over, followed by Hilton Cartwright in the sixth to leave them 3 for 40. However, Maxwell had already collected a series of sweetly-struck boundaries and then took charge of the innings bringing out his full range of strokeplay including a reverse sweep for six. Pooran largely fed him the strike and watched from the other end but when he deposited Sandeep Lamichhane inside-out over cover it felt like the game could finish quickly. Then Scott Boland, who has been impressive throughout the tournament, found Pooran’s outside edge and at the start of the next over Maxwell picked out deep midwicket against Johan Botha. It was his only mistake, but a big one.Lamichhane up against old mates It was Lamichhane’s first appearance of the competition in the purple of the Hurricanes, against his former Stars team-mates. He recently completed his two weeks’ quarantine in Australia and had been diagnosed with Covid-19 while at home in Nepal. So this will have been welcome return to the middle. It wasn’t his most accurate spell, but he claimed two key wickets. He defeated Cartwright with a googly and had Ben Duck caught behind off a wild drive. With Lamichhane providing right-arm legspin, the Hurricanes are an attack that have most bases covered. Ellis, meanwhile, ended with 2 for 11 from his four overs which included a huge tally of 17 dot balls.Power splutter The Hurricanes struggled to move through the gears in the first half of their innings, reaching 1 for 71 after 10 overs although they were building some momentum when the Power Surge was called after 12 overs, at 1 for 94 and Malan having reached a 32-ball fifty. However, the innings almost went into reverse in the two overs. Liam Hatcher delivered a series of excellent yorkers in the 13th over which cost just three, and then Billy Stanlake started the 14th with wickets off the first two deliveries. Ben McDermott, who used up 35 balls for 31, was bowled heaving across the line and Ellis, sent in as a pinch hitter, skied his first ball to mid-on. Stanlake would go for just two in the over (one of those as a leg bye) meaning the Surge had brought five runs.Maddinson’s rough day The fourth ball of the match was driven down the ground by D’Arcy Short and resulted in one of more unusual injuries you will see. Maddinson was jogging to collect the ball from beyond the boundary, but in his stride landed directly on the rope with his left foot which resulted in a badly twisted ankle. He was soon ruled out of the match and at the 10-over mark the Stars brought in pace bowler Lance Morris under the X-factor rule. Morris’ second over, the 16th of the innings, was a lively affair which started with dismissing Malan off a no-ball and then being taken for a four and six by the left hander as the Hurricanes tried to make up lost ground. It looked as though they would finish strongly as Malan and Ingram struck three sixes off consecutive balls, but the final 17 deliveries of the innings did not produce a boundary. Yet it still proved enough.
Whilst a striker remains at the top of Arsenal's shopping list going into this summer, it appears that the club are also making a move for a forward thinking defender who is eager to join Mikel Arteta's side.
Gunners look to build squad ready for next season
Though the names of Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres occupied most of the headlines going into the summer, the opening of the transfer window has seen the Gunners target players in different positions.

A midfield partner for Declan Rice appears to be a priority for Edu Gaspar and Co with Arsenal reportedly offered the chance to sign PSG and Uruguay star Manuel Ugarte. Valued at around £50 million, Ugarte has also attracted interest from Bayern Munich and Manchester United, meaning that the Gunners may have a fight on their hands to get their man.
Upgrades in defence are also on the minds of the Gunners' recrutiment team with Arsenal joining a growing list of clubs keen to sign Italy star Riccardo Calafiori. In their quest to bolster their backline, Arsenal are also said to be interested in Barcelona's Jules Kounde.
Barcelona's Jules Kounde
Whilst out-and-out defenders are on the shortlist at the Emirates, Arsenal have also seen a new development in their pursuit of a more attack-minded defensive option.
Mourinho holds the key to Arsenal transfer
As reported by Sport Witness, the Turkish press are claiming that Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho will make the final decision over the future of Arsenal target Ferdi Kadioglu. The full back had been linked with moves to both Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund, however it now transpires that the final decision is in the hands of their new Portuguese manager.
Back in May it had been reported that Kadioglu had already agreed to join Arsenal, and while this proved ultimately false, Kadioglu is evidently keen on a £25m move to North London.
Whilst Mourinho's decision on the transfer is not yet known, it is unlikely that the 61-year-old will be eager to let the player leave based on his performances last season. Kadioglu featured 51 times for Fenerbahce last term, contributing three goals and five assists in the process.

Kadioglu has carried his exceptional domestic form into Euro 2024 where he has starred as one of Turkey's best talents. During his nation's Group F tie against the Czech Republic, the attacking the fullback created five chances for his team-mates, a joint record for Turkish players in a European Championship match.
At just 24 years of age, Kadioglu has already earned praise from across world football with Spartak Trnava boss Michal Gasparik saying of the player: “Ferdi is a quality and fantastic player. He plays on both wings. He is a very good player”.
Despite mutual interest from both Arsenal and Kadioglu, it now appears that 'the special one' holds all the cards as to whether the transfer gets over the line.
Following a season of points deductions and takeover uncertainty, which culminated in the collapse of 777 Partners' deal, Everton could finally be on course for good news after receiving a third offer for the club.
Everton takeover news
777 initially reached an agreement over the purchase of a majority stake in Everton at the start of last season, but never sealed Premier League approval. Now, with their portfolio of clubs beginning to collapse around them, the Premier League's decision looks more and more like an Everton rescue.
The Toffees released a statement regarding the collapse of the deal, which read: "The agreement between 777 Partners and Blue Heaven Holdings Limited for the sale and purchase of the majority shareholding in the Club expired today.
"The Club’s Board of Directors recognises the considerable level of financial support 777 Partners has provided the Club over recent months and would like to take this opportunity to thank them for this. The Club will continue to operate as usual, while it works with Blue Heaven Holdings to assess all options for the Club’s future ownership.
"The Board of Directors would like to thank everyone connected to Everton for their patience over recent months and reiterate its commitment to providing further updates when it is appropriate to do so through the Club’s official communication channels."
Everton now close to signing new record-breaking academy gem for Dyche
He’s one for the future.
ByTom Cunningham Jun 8, 2024
The race to replace 777 has been open ever since, with Crystal Palace's John Textor reportedly looking to sell his stake in the south London club in order to table an offer for Everton, whilst British businessmen and lifelong Everton fans Andy Bell and George Downing have tabled an offer mixed with fresh equity and a £350m loan on the Toffees' new stadium. There's also reportedly a second bid from MSP Sports Capital.
Now, as per Matt Slater of The Athletic, a group of investors led by Vatche Manoukian have tabled a £400m all-equity bid to buy Everton. So, with that said, Farhad Moshiri certainly isn't short on options.
Everton must quickly solve takeover situation
With the summer transfer window approaching, whether it's MSP Sports Capital, Bell and Downing or Manoukian, Moshiri must complete the sale of Everton as soon as possible. Those at Goodison Park have already wasted enough time waiting for 777 to receive the Premier League's approval which never arrived. Now, they must add some stability to the club by solving the current situation before the start of next season.
The last thing that Sean Dyche and his players will need is further uncertainty. As things stand, it remains to be seen just what Everton's summer transfer budget will be just under a week before the window opens. And with the likes of Jarrad Branthwaite and Amadou Onana linked with summer departures, it could be a frustrating window for Everton.
Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite
Losing both star players without being in a position to finance replacements due to their ongoing takeover mess and PSR concerns would instantly leave Dyche and Everton with a mountain to climb when it comes to avoiding relegation. Simply put, Moshiri must do everything to ease those concerns.
