  • WHAT ALEX GREENWOOD SAID

Alongside a photo of her in a hospital bed, she wrote on X: "Not the ending to 2024 that I had planned. I will work so hard to be back on the pitch as soon as I can, for now I’m going to take some time to myself & family who always give their time to me. Thankyou for all the support this year, see you all soon."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

In most cases, a MCL tear is less serious than an anterior cruciate ligament one but Greenwood could still face a long spell on the sidelines. The defender may be in a race against time to play again this season and will have an eye on the 2025 European Championship swhich begin in Switzerland next July.

ICC u-turn over allocation of global events as bidding process removed

All tournaments over the next cycle starting in 2023 will be selected by the board

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Jun-2021Hosts for ICC events will not be determined through an open bidding process, and instead will be selected by its board. In what amounts effectively to a u-turn, the ICC said after a board meeting on Tuesday that a process for selecting hosts for all of its events in the next rights cycle from 2023-2031 had been approved and would begin this month. How that process will work was not revealed, but the decision to roll back from inviting bids from all members will please a number of boards who had been opposed to it, including the BCCI and ECB. All men’s, women’s and Under-19 events in the next cycle will be selected rather than bid for. The process of selecting hosts for men’s events in the cycle – which now includes the return of the Champions Trophy and an expanded 50-over World Cup and T20 World Cup – will begin this month, with all events allocated a host by September. The hosting process for women’s and U-19 events will commence in November and, the ICC said, “will be an opportunity to engage with a wider range of Members including first-time hosts.”The decision to implement bidding for events was one of the more contentious outcomes of an ICC meeting in October 2019, that has since rumbled through discussions on the next cricket calendar. Potentially opening up the ability for any member – full, associate or affiliate – to bid to host ICC events was a significant shift from how event locations were decided upon in the previous eight-year cycle: all the major global men’s events were essentially divvied up between Australia, India and England.Related

ICC expands men's world events: ODI WC to 14 teams, T20 WC to 20 teams

In February 2020 the ICC formally began that process by emailing all members and asking them to tender expressions of interest for any of their events. Manu Sawhney, then the ICC CEO, visited several member countries to whip up interest and a number of members, including PCB, CSA and the BCB, indicated they would be bidding. The BCCI, ECB or CA notably did not, however, signalling their unhappiness with the process. As recently as February this year the BCCI was spelling out its objections to the idea of bidding, arguing that only a few members had the infrastructure in place to host the biggest events. The new selection process will not necessarily rule out other members from hosting events; Sourav Ganguly, the BCCI president, has been open to exploring new markets for tournaments in ICC meetings and the BCCI is thought to be broadly supportive of a World Cup in Africa, and a global T20 event at least partially hosted in the US. But along with the ECB and CA it does also want to ensure that some of cricket’s biggest events are staged in some of its biggest markets. That is the argument that has now been accepted by the ICC. “The revised approach to selecting hosts for our events will give us much more flexibility to grow the game and engage new fans,” the ICC’s acting chief executive Geoff Allardice said. “There is a smaller pool of countries with the infrastructure needed to host our senior Men’s events which narrows the selection process. Additionally, many of our Members expressed interest in hosting Women’s and U19 events which gives us a great opportunity to stage events in established and emerging cricket nations.”As well as the disagreement over the process of finding a host the boards of India, England and Australia were opposed to including an extra event in the new eight-year cycle, arguing that more attention needed to be paid to developing bilateral cricket. That extra event – in the guise of a return of the Champions Trophy – was reconfirmed at Tuesday’s meeting.

Meg Lanning's Australia on brink of world record that will take some catching

New Zealand hope to spoil the moment: “It’s always nice to mess up the Aussies’ plans,” says Lea Tahuhu

Andrew McGlashan03-Apr-2021One of the must-do things in the picturesque setting of Mount Maunganui is to climb to the top of the extinct volcano which gives the town its name. On Sunday, Australia can scale their own peak. It’s been a world-record attempt three years in the making. Back in March 2018, Australia beat India by eight wickets in Vadodara and since then they have not lost an ODI. Their run stands at 21 – equal with Ricky Ponting’s 2003 side – with New Zealand now standing in their way of setting a new mark.World Cup wins will always hold a special place – not least the one just over a year ago on home soil – but though the team insist they do not talk about the record itself, that it is a byproduct of success, to not drop an ODI in such a long period of time is a remarkable achievement.Related

Perry set for 'bigger role' in ODI series as bowling questions remain

“How we mark ourselves being able to consistently win in different conditions is something we rate really highly,” head coach Matthew Mott said. “They are vastly different experiences. You can’t beat the euphoria of winning a final, particularly at the MCG in front of 87000 [people], but internally we do rate this very highly.”Mott believes one of the key aspects that has kept the team motivated throughout has been the ICC Championship which decides qualification for the ODI World Cup and means every match in bilateral series that provide points is important – although this series will not carry that aspect with the next cycle having not yet started. There have also been memories of when the team has relaxed with a series won to allow the opposition a chance.”One thing we should look to promote more is the ICC championship,” Mott, who sits on the ICC committee as a coaching representative, said. “Every series and match has a context. You don’t want to drop any games. I think it’s a great gauge of the success of a team, both home and away over a period of time. There’s no such thing as a dead rubber. It’s testimony to the way the players have stuck to it and finished off series is why we’re in this position.”Thinking back to the [2017] Ashes at home where we allowed England back in to level the series, it was very unsatisfying. I think that motivated the team in every match that we played. We don’t feel like we’ve overly dominated in any of those series and had a real easy ride. It is going to be a record that will stay for a while. If we get up in this one it’s a significant achievement in its own right.”Rachael Haynes and Alyssa Healy are two of the players to have played in all 21 matches•AFP via Getty ImagesIn a neat bit of symmetry, Australia have used 21 players across the 21 matches. Alyssa Healy, Rachael Haynes, Ashleigh Gardner and Beth Mooney have been the four ever-presents. Healy is the top run-scorer (1132 at 56.60) and Jess Jonassen the leading wicket-taker (39 at 12.64). Ellyse Perry’s numbers – batting average 60.90 and bowling return of 18.80 – leap off the page as well.”The key to that consistency is the players themselves getting better and better,” Mott said. “We’ve got number of players in the ICC rankings in the top ten, that’s something we’ve focused on, that they’re getting better every year.”Still, they will need to play well on Sunday. New Zealand have been buoyed by their shared T20I series and Australia’s top-order batting, albeit in a different format, has not clicked into top gear yet on tour. However, the home side will again be without captain Sophie Devine who will take no part in the series after missing the last two T20Is with fatigue. Amy Satterthwaite will continue to lead but they will be boosted by the return of fast bowler Lea Tahuhu, although coach Bob Carter suggested it could be a choice between Tahuhu and offspinner Leigh Kasperek depending on the pitch.”As I said earlier in the week, this is about prioritizing Sophie’s needs first,” Carter said. “It’s great to have Lea back in the mix, she’s an experienced player and gives our bowling attack another option.”New Zealand have been hearing plenty about Australia’s world-record bid and they hope to spoil to occasion. “It would be fantastic,” Tahuhu said. “It’s always nice to mess up the Aussies’ plans and that’s what we’ll be looking to do.”

Finn Allen muscles New Zealand to 3-0 sweep

10-overs a side Finn Allen has arrived. The 21-year-old, all of three T20Is young, made the joint second-fastest T20I fifty by a New Zealander in a 10-overs-a-side contest at Eden Park to help New Zealand hammer 141 for 4. This was 65 too many for Bangladesh, who ended their tour with six straight losses. The rainFor over two hours, intermittent rain kept a thin but boisterous crowd on tenterhooks. When rain finally abated to give way to some cricket, Liton Das, leading in place of the injured Mahmudullah, elected to bowl. But soon enough, all that glee at getting to do what he wanted, disappeared as Allen and Martin Guptill bristled their way to an 85-run opening stand in just 5.4 overs.Guptill sets the tone, Allen followsGuptill scored each of the 23 runs New Zealand made in the first two overs, which also consisted of six dot balls. Swinging cleanly to pepper the arc between cow corner and long-off, he did all the early running. Allen, who faced just one delivery in this phase, opened the scoring with an audacious reverse sweep for four off left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed.

That reverse sweep was followed by a muscular hoick over midwicket for back-to-back boundaries. This much was clear. He had no fear, neither was he unfazed at two relatively low scores in his first two outings. If the ball was there to be hit, he was going after them. This forced the bowlers to also alter their lengths and in doing so, they erred and Allen made merry. What Allen did wellAllen has a still head and incredible hand speed in finding his desired areas. If the bowler went length, he backed away to muscle it away or slap it over the infield. When they went full, he cleared his front leg to clear the sight screen. If they tried to bang it in, he flat-batted them. If they went full and wide, he got down on one knee to scythe this away. If they tried a leg-stump yorker and missed, he was ready to scoop them fearlessly over short fine.It was almost as if the bowlers had no answers to Allen’s pyrotechnics. The reward in the end, a maiden T20 fifty and plenty of chatter on social media about what he could potentially achieve at his upcoming IPL stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore, where he’d team up with Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. All this as Guptill also found his own hitting range in making 44 off 18 before holing out to sweeper cover.Todd Astle had a memorable return to the New Zealand side•Getty Images

Fielding lets Bangladesh downNot for the first time on tour, Bangladesh’s fielding was a disappointment. At Eden Park, where the boundaries are slightly odd-shaped because it’s also a Rugby ground, Bangladesh’s struggled with their angles, grassing as many as four catches and bailing out of one completely.Allen was put down twice in the fourth over. First, Rubel Hossain put down a tough chance running back from mid-off. Then, Soumya Sarkar failed to get around from mid-on to grab a steepler. Then in the seventh over, Soumya put Allen down again on 51 when he did all the hard work in running in from long-off and then putting in a full-length dive – doing most things right – before grassing the ball off his fingertips. Then in the penultimate over, Shoriful Islam bailed out of a catch to once again reprieve Allen for the fourth time in the night, but by then the damage had been done. But there was some silver lining in Shoriful’s bowling efforts. Hitting the hard lengths with his left-arm pace and mixing it up with the wide yorkers, his two overs went for just 21 for the wicket of Glenn Phillips as he looked to accelerate towards the end. In a game where New Zealand went at 14 an over, this was commendable.Southee, Astle inflict maximum damageSoumya was done in for pace as he lobbed a return catch to Southee off an inside edge in the very first over. Off the next delivery, Das walked across to paddle, only to see his middle stump flattened by a full and furiously straight delivery. Opener Mohammad Naim muscled his way to two sixes, but the entertainment was all too brief, as he was one of four victims of legspinner Todd Astle, who was playing his first game of the season. One of those wickets, to dismiss Afif Hossain, was particularly impressive. Imparting plenty of revs on a wrong’ un that he landed on a length to get bounce – almost Rashid Khan-like, he beat a swinging Afif Hossain’s slog sweep with part-time wicketkeeper Devon Conway effecting a smart stumping. He finished with figures of 4 for 13. Southee then returned to take another, although he missed his hat-trick in doing so. It wasn’t a batting performance Bangladesh would want to remember.

Ange must finally cash in on Spurs man who earns over 5x more than Doue

After a Premier League season that saw them go unbeaten for the first ten games, only to miss out on Champions League football at the end, it has to be a big summer of transfer activity for Tottenham Hotspur.

Ange Postecoglou has proven that he's got the ability to be a success in England's top flight, and now Daniel Levy needs to dig into his pockets to give him the proper backing to succeed in North London.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou

However, while bringing in the right players is crucial, so is getting rid of those no longer good enough.

One player, who arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with huge potential, has failed to deliver, with Ange needing to offload him given his hefty wages.

Sergio Reguilon’s Tottenham Hotspur career

At the time, signing left-back Sergio Reguilon for £32m seemed like incredible business by the club, acquiring a talent who could nail down the full-back role for many years to come in north London.

sergio-reguilon-real-madrid-tottenham-hotspur-emerson-transfer

Before his move to Spurs, the Spaniard was named La Liga's best left-back in 2019/20 while on loan with Sevilla, winning the Europa League – but the Lilywhites faithful have failed to see the best of the defender.

After two years in north London, Reguilon completed a loan move back to his homeland and joined Atlético Madrid, in an unsuccessful stint that provided him with a series of injuries and just two starts in La Liga.

He’s since had various loan stints at fellow Premier League sides Manchester United and Brentford, but once again failed to impress with neither side signing the 27-year-old on a permanent basis.

Reguilon has only featured 67 times for Spurs since his big-money transfer, with the club investing in fellow left-back Destiny Udogie to fill the void which the Spaniard failed to claim after his move from the Spanish giants.

Having signed a five-year contract in 2020, Reguilon is out of contract in 2025, and it's highly unlikely that his deal will be renewed, with this summer the last opportunity to recoup some of the £32m the club splashed on him four years ago.

How much Sergio Reguilon earns at Tottenham Hotspur

Whilst he’s not the highest earner in the Spurs squad, the Spaniard still earns a huge chunk, especially considering he’s not featured for the club in two seasons.

According to Capology, the 27-year-old earns £53k-per-week in north London, pocketing a huge £2.7m in wages every season.

As a result, Reguilon has taken home a staggering £5.4m since he last pulled on the shirt of Tottenham Hotspur, with the club being bled dry by the one-time promising talent.

His subsequent weekly wage is over five times higher than that of current transfer target Desire Doue, who only earns £8k-per-week, despite Spurs’ £60m interest in the 19-year-old wonderkid.

Rennes midfielder Desire Doue

Postecoglou’s side aren’t the only side interested in the French youngster, with Bayern Munich and PSG also said to be interested in his services this summer.

If they are to be able to fund a move for Doue, the sale of Reguilon – who has been touted with a new £10m price tag – would massively boost their chances of landing the in-demand superstar.

It’s been a disastrous move for both parties, with Spurs needing to offload him to enable them to be competitive in the market, whilst Reguilon will be desperate for a transfer to kickstart his career after a stuttering stint in north London.

Rodrigo Caio será desfalque na próxima partida do Flamengo no Brasileirão

Man Utd are ready to ditch ace who’s worth more than Bruno & Garnacho

If you asked any Manchester United fan who the most influential players were last season, Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes would be the most frequent answers.

The attacking duo were the source of almost all of the Red Devils attacking impetus, with their consistency being vital.

The Argentine netted seven goals in the Premier League while the United captain scored ten, but it’s their fearless attitude and determination that make them fan favourites.

Nevertheless, there’s a current United player worth even more than the aforementioned duo who could be on their way out the door this summer.

The Man Utd star who could be sold this summer

According to a report from journalist Graeme Bailey, Man Utd will shockingly let Marcus Rashford leave this summer.

It’s said that Paris Saint-Germain will once again be in the market for the United forward as they look to find a replacement for Kylian Mbappe.

The report mentions that if a suitable offer arrived from the French club, then Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co ‘would not stand in his way’ if he wished to depart.

The reason for this is due to his drop in performance last season, which raised concerns amongst the hierarchy, while his off-the-field antics have also been a point of discussion.

Marcus Rashford’s value in 2024

In all honesty, last season was hardly Rashford’s finest in a United shirt, as he struggled to put his stamp on many matches.

The number ten failed to rediscover the form he showed during Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge, when he scored 30 goals across all competitions.

Last season, he scored just seven times in the Premier League, and his creativity was also held back, as he boasted a record of two assists.

There were even some periods over the season where he was dropped to the bench as he failed to have an influence when on the field, with the likes of Amad Diallo and Antony preferred at times.

Nonetheless, as you can see from the table above, Rashford is still estimated to be worth £57m by FootballTransfers despite having a poor campaign.

Shockingly, this makes the English “superstar,” as dubbed by journalist Alex Turk, the most valuable asset in the entire Man United squad.

Therefore, he’s estimated to be worth even more than Garnacho and Fernandes, who are both players that INEOS will look to complete their rebuild around – the pair deemed to be worth £36m and £53m, respectively.

On top of that, Rashford is estimated to be the fourth-most valuable winger in the entire Premier League, only behind Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, and Gabriel Martinelli.

However, despite United being open to selling Rashford, the attacker is clearly still one of the most dangerous attackers in Europe on his day, as proven by his 30-goal campaign.

Last season was difficult for every single player at Old Trafford, and bar a handful of individuals, everyone suffered and failed to perform. But in a settled system, Rashford could very easily thrive once again.

Therefore, selling the academy graduate could go on to be a massive mistake, as there is a reason he’s United’s most valuable player at the club.

New target: Nottingham Forest race Napoli to sign £12m "perfectionist"

Nottingham Forest have been named as one of the sides chasing a young talent out of Ligue 1 this summer, according to reports coming from his home nation of Brazil.

Forest need to strengthen

After only avoiding relegation from the Premier League on the final day of the season, Nuno Espírito Santo's side will need to strengthen this summer.

Murillo successor: Forest to hijack move for another Brazilian sensation

The Reds are looking to find a replacement should Murillo depart the City Ground.

Jun 12, 2024

They have been one of the most active sides in the transfer market since their promotion two years ago, but many of those deals haven't worked out and some have already moved on.

Though it will be a more low-key summer this time around, there is still expected to be movement from the Reds and to that end, they have been linked with a fresh target.

Forest keen on another Brazilian

Now, Forest have been credited with an interest in fullback Vanderson as they look to bolster their ranks amid Gonzalo Montiel's impending departure at the end of his loan spell.

The defender is valued at around 15m euros (£12m) by his current side, but Forest will have to move fast to firm up their interest in his services.

That is because Napoli are already formulating a bid for him, with Brazilian outlet RTI Esporte claiming that the Italian side are ready to offer 9m euros (£7.6m) to take him to the south of Italy. The Serie A outfit are on the hunt for a new fullback after Giovanni di Lorenzo reportedly told Antonio Conte he wanted to move to Juventus.

However, they will have to up their offer to land Vanderson as his replacement, with the report adding that the Monagasque's are holding out for 15m euros (£12m) to part ways with the defender.

Monaco's Vanderson

It means that Forest still have a chance to swoop in and pay the asking price if they move fast. Still just 22-years-old, the Brazilian has drawn heavy praise from his then manager Philippe Clement back in 2022, who highlighted his desire to improve as one of his best attributes.

Vanderson has been less consistent recently, but he is still a young player. He had an exceptional adaptation here [last season]. We have already spoken about that. He is also a player who is and continues to interest lots of big clubs. That can possibly do something to the mindset, not that he didn’t have his feet on the ground, but Vanderson is very ambitious and a huge perfectionist.”

Every day he wants to be better than the last. That can give him a lot of pressure, lots of stress with all of the ambition that he has. We need to manage that more for him. If I left him to it, he would train for 18 hours a day. He is like that. Sometimes we need physical and mental breaks and he is a young player that needs to manage that. He will do it, because he has such a positive frame of mind.”

Injuries restricted him to just 20 Ligue 1 appearances last time out, but he contributed three goals and an assist from right back, and has also been linked with a move to Tottenham in recent weeks.

He made his debut for the Brazilian national team 12 months ago, but has since lost his place, with Vanderson not among the squad for the upcoming Copa America.

Tayla Vlaeminck ruled out of New Zealand series and WBBL; Maitlan Brown earns first Australia call

Ellyse Perry has been included in the squad but her fitness will be assessed nearer the matches next month

Andrew McGlashan21-Aug-2020Australia fast bowler Tayla Vlaeminck has been ruled out of the home series against New Zealand starting next month and the WBBL after a setback in her recovery from the foot injury that forced her to miss the T20 World Cup.Maitlan Brown, who plays for Australian Capital Territory and the Melbourne Renegades, has earned her first call-up to a national squad while Belinda Vakarewa has also been included in an enlarged 18-player group for the T20I and ODI matches against New Zealand due to the restrictions around Covid-19.Australia combined squad

After missing the semi-final and final of the T20 World Cup due to a hamstring injury, Ellyse Perry has been included in the squad but her fitness will be assessed nearer the matches. The matches against New Zealand will be Australia’s first cricket since the T20 World Cup final on March 8 and could yet be the first top-level women’s international action since the pandemic if England do not manage to arrange some fixtures next month. With the Women’s ODI World Cup is now postponed until 2022, the focus has shifted somewhat from preparing for that tournament. The initial hope had been that Vlaeminck, one of the fastest bowlers in the world but who has a history of injury, would be ready for that event, however now there will be a cautious approach taken.”Tayla had a recurrence of right medial ankle pain three weeks ago as she was working through her rehab from the navicular stress fracture she sustained in February,” Australian physiotherapist Kate Beerworth said. “Her recovery has been trending in the right direction but it’s just not going to be soon enough for the demands on international cricket and a busy Big Bash schedule.Maitlan Brown in action for Australia A•Getty Images

“The tricky nature of a navicular injury means it’s more a long-term play and we’ll be guided by Tayla’s symptoms as we look to get her back to full fitness. She’s only young and it’s important we look after her future, so we won’t rush anything.”Vlaeminck is the only centrally-contracted player not to make the squad with allrounder Erin Burns and offspinner Molly Strano, who were both part of the T20 World Cup squad, joining Brown and Vakarewa from outside that group.Brown took 16 wickets in last season’s WBBL for the Renegades and seven wickets for the ACT in the WNCL. She has featured in Australia A sides in recent seasons including against India A last December.”Tayla is your true tear-away quick which we love, but we need to make sure we look after her long-term future,” national selector Shawn Flegler said. “She’s going to be a serious long-term player for Australia.”Ellyse is progressing well from a significant hamstring injury and we want to give her every chance to be available for selection, so we’ll continue to monitor her progress over the coming weeks.”The door has really opened for players like Maitlan, who joins the squad for the first time, and fellow fast-bowler Belinda who has previously represented Australia. Belinda only just missed out on T20 World Cup selection while Maitlan has impressed through her time in the National Performance Squad and Australia A.”New Zealand always present a great challenge and this series will be no different. While nothing is guaranteed in the current climate it’s pleasing to be able to prepare for a series like this and thanks must go to all the people working behind the scenes to make it possible.”The tour includes a three-match T20I series due to start on September 27 with all the games played at North Sydney Oval followed by three ODIs in Townsville, Cairns and the Gold Coast although the fixture list remains subject to change.
