Shakib braced to be Bangladesh's main man

Bangladesh allrounder Shakib Al Hasan has said that getting used to the workload of a Test match will be his main challenge going into first Test against England at Chittagong on Thursday

Mohammad Isam18-Oct-2016Bangladesh allrounder Shakib Al Hasan has said that getting used to the workload of a Test match will be his main challenge going into first Test against England at Chittagong on Thursday.Although Bangladesh have named four spinners in their 14-man squad, Shakib – with 147 wickets in 42 Tests – is by far and away the most experienced member of a quartet that also includes Taijul Islam, Shuvagata Hom and the uncapped Mehedi Hasan.Taijul did claim the remarkable figures of 8 for 39 to defeat Zimbabwe at Dhaka in 2014, but he managed a solitary scalpin his two most recent Tests against India and South Africa last year. Shuvagata hasn’t convinced in his seven Tests, picking up eight wickets at a bowling average of 59.12; Mehedi is also an offspinner, and has taken 41 first-class wickets at 23.48 but is completely unproven at Test level. Meanwhile, the two-man seam attack has one rookie in Kamrul Islam Rabbi. The thin look puts much pressure on Shakib, who has bowled marathon spells in Tests ever since Mohammad Rafique retired in 2008. He will also be a vital source of runs in Bangladesh’s middle-order.”I think I will find out about my confidence when I get into the Test,” Shakib said. “We are trying to be best prepared for the game. We haven’t played a Test for a long time and I don’t even remember the last time I played a longer-version match. So this is going to be a little difficult for me. To be honest, there isn’t much to prepare for, since a lot of it is the mentality going into a Test match.”Since their last Test in July last year Bangladesh have played 27 international matches but also had to go through a pause of ten months between November 2015 and September this year to play ODIs. Shakib said that it took Bangladesh some time to get used the ODIs as well, despite their success in the format in 2015.”We have also played ODIs after nearly a year and it took us two-three matches to get into the groove. It is different to bat or bowl for a longer period, which in itself is a challenge,” he said.Shakib said that their bowling attack has the ability to bowl out a side twice in a Test match, provided they get some help from the pitch. “A lot will depend on the wicket. We usually try to play on flat surfaces in home conditions so that our batsmen can score runs.”If the conditions favour our spinners and pacers, I think they have the ability to take 20 wickets. But it won’t happen on a flat wicket,” said Shakib.

Tallawahs rout Warriors to claim second CPL title

A rematch from Wednesday’s first Caribbean Premier League playoff qualifier between the regular season’s top two teams quickly turned into an uncontested romp for Jamaica Tallawahs, who rampaged past Guyana Amazon Warriors by nine wickets to claim their second CPL title on Sunday night at Warner Park. For Warriors, it was a flat effort that left them runner-up for the third time in four CPL seasons, twice to Tallawahs.Warriors were the regular season table-toppers and beat Tallawahs in two of their prior three meetings, including by four wickets in Wednesday’s opening playoff match. On Sunday, however, they stumbled badly after being sent in by Chris Gayle at the toss and were bowled out for a franchise record low total of 93 in just 16.1 overs. Warriors never won a game while batting first in 2016, and lost all three games in which they batted first, with two of those losses coming against Tallawahs.Warriors were under pressure early when Nic Maddinson became the first of three batsmen dismissed first ball, edging Andre Russell behind in the first over. A bigger blow came at the start of the third over when Chris Lynn, the tournament’s leading scorer, carved Shakib Al Hasan straight to Jonathan Foo at backward point for 7.Left-handed Sohail Tanvir was promoted up the order to No. 4 in an attempt to combat the left-arm spin threat posed by Shakib and Imad Wasim. At an individual level, the plan worked as Tanvir top-scored with 42 off 37 balls, but the rest of his team-mates struggled. Despite Tanvir’s calm, chaos was ever-present at the opposite end. Dwayne Smith was one of just two others apart from Tanvir to reach double-figures but his stay ended for 17 when he top-edged a pull off Oshane Thomas to Rovman Powell at mid-on to make it 50 for 3 in the eighth. With the top three removed, Shakib and eventual Man of the Match Imad Wasim set about tearing through the middle order in ruthless fashion. Jason Mohammed was trapped playing down the wrong line to an arm ball from Shakib for a golden duck to make it 53 for 4 before Imad took the first of his three wickets as Christopher Barnwell mistimed a slog to Gayle at short midwicket for 10. Two balls later, Anthony Bramble was bowled backing away for a slog and Imad claimed his third in four balls to start the 15th when Rayad Emrit was stumped for nought missing a flick to a leg-side wide to make it 83 for 7.Kesrick Williams also was on a hat-trick in the 16th over – he had Tanvir caught by Foo running in from the midwicket boundary, and followed it up with a gem of a delivery that jagged back in to knock Steven Jacobs’ off stump for 7. Adam Zampa survived the hat-trick ball to end the over, but was out one ball later after failing to ground his bat coming back for a second run with Williams’ relay from long leg to Sangakkara producing the end of the innings.Gayle propelled the chase with his third fifty-plus score of the season, reaching his half-century off 22 balls and ending up with 54 off 27 balls. He was dismissed flicking Emrit to Jacobs at deep midwicket. The Tallawahs captain ended the campaign as his side’s leading scorer with 425 runs, third overall behind Lynn and St Lucia Zouks’ Johnson Charles. Gayle’s opening partner Chadwick Walton steered the rest of the chase with 25 not out, ending seventh overall in the CPL run charts with 301 runs and second for Tallawahs. However, it was the old pro Kumar Sangakkara who struck the winning runs with a four smeared wide of long-on off Veerasammy Permaul to clinch the title with 7.1 overs to spare. Russell was named Player of the Tournament thanks in large part to his scintillating 100 in Friday’s knockout game against Trinbago Knight Riders. Russell struck the fastest century in Caribbean T20 history, off just 42 balls, and also broke a three-game Tallawahs losing streak lifting them into the final.

Chelsea In Talks Over Blockbuster Transfer For £955k-p/w Star

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is in talks with Paris Saint-Germain chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi over a potential move for Neymar, French football expert Julien Laurens has claimed.

What's going on with Neymar?

The Brazil superstar is set to leave PSG this summer, having been targeted by the club's fans, who called for him to depart the French capital.

In what has been an injury-hit campaign, he has 18 goals and 17 assists in 29 games, and the 31-year-old would be a statement signing for anyone.

Speaking on ESPN FC (5.30), Laurens claimed that Chelsea are in talks over a potential deal for the attacker, even though they will not be playing European football next season.

"We know that Todd Boehly has had meetings already with the Al-Khelaifi to talk about Neymar, talking about the possibility of bringing him to Stamford Bridge next season," he stated.

"I don't think this is a strategy from Newcastle to go and get someone like Neymar, their strategies in recruitment have been very different despite the money that they have.

"For Chelsea. however, the bling-bling has been the strategy, that's what they want. So I think Neymar on that point would fit well."

Could Neymar solve Chelsea's problems?

Although he is still prolific in front of goal, Neymar, who has been described as a "special talent," may not solve Chelsea's issues in attack.

Chelsea have already invested a large sum of money in left-winger Mykhailo Mudryk, and Neymar's arrival could block the Ukrainian's pathway to the team.

The Blues have struggled all season, scoring just 34 times in 34 matches, and as he is not an out-and-out striker, Neymar may not be the striker Chelsea need to lead the line.

If Chelsea keep loanee Joao Felix, then they will have two expensive, younger players in Neymar's favoured positions, and signing the Brazilian on a big-money deal would not solve their other issues.

On a wage of around £955k-per-week, he would cost the club a huge amount of money during a time when they need to cut costs, with an inflated squad that needs trimming as well as a lack of Champions League revenue.

At 31, Neymar would be a short-term signing, and whilst his arrival would be a huge statement, his poor injury record would likely mean Chelsea get little value for money, and given that other areas of the team need investment, it is a signing that they should avoid.

Tottenham 35 y/o Manager Candidate Still In "Pole Position"

Tottenham Hotspur manager contender Julian Nagelsmann is still the favourite to land the role in north London, according to journalist Dean Jones.

What's the latest news involving Julian Nagelsmann?

The Telegraph have revealed that enticing Nagelsmann to take over at Hotspur Way will come at a hefty price, with Spurs potentially having to pay over £10 million in compensation to hire the 35-year-old.

Nagelsmann, who has been hailed as "elite", is still technically on gardening leave at Bayern Munich following their decision to part ways with the German coach to hire Thomas Tuchel back in March, signifying that he is still technically employed at the Allianz Arena.

As per The Daily Mail, Brentford technical director Lee Dykes has been earmarked as a potential replacement for former Tottenham sporting director Fabio Paratici alongside Johannes Spors, who has also been linked with the role.

Before deciding whether or not to take over at Spurs, Nagelsmann wants to know who he will be working with in terms of recruitment. The future of Lilywhites talisman Harry Kane is also something he wants assurances over amid interest from the Premier League and around Europe in the 29-year-old.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Jones has signalled that Nagelsmann is still the frontrunner to assume the vacancy in north London and replace Antonio Conte.

Jones said: “Ultimately, Nagelsmann still seems like the guy in pole position for that job. “So, unless something falls down with Nagelsmann or one of the parties gets cold feet, he will remain the favourite for the job.”

What issues need to be solved at Tottenham Hotspur this summer?

First and foremost, the future of Harry Kane needs to be sorted out before too long. As per Football Insider, Manchester United view the England international as their 'number one priority and top target' this summer.

Chelsea also retain an interest in the forward and prospective new boss Mauricio Pochettino is believed to be keen on reuniting with the forward at Stamford Bridge as his contract nears its final year at Spurs.

Tottenham have also been devoid of creativity at times this season, which is something that will need to be looked at when considering potential incomings ahead of 2023/24.

Iliman Ndiaye and Kang-in Lee have both been linked in recent times, though it remains to be seen what will happen come the off-season.

Loanees Arnaut Danjuma, Dejan Kulusevski and Clement Lenglet also find themselves in situations that need to be clarified in the forthcoming window, making it a busy time for whoever Spurs' new boss may be.

Leeds Can Cash In On £30k-p/w Liability

Leeds United do boast a smattering of talent within their ranks despite the relegation battle they are once again enduring, which makes their current predicament all the more baffling.

It is clear that a lack of belief and form are combining to exacerbate their troubles, and as such the Whites sit just two points clear from the drop zone, constantly straddling danger despite Javi Gracia’s minor turnaround in their form.

Should the Spaniard achieve safety come the conclusion of this campaign, he will likely seek to purge this squad that has been assembled by two managers that prioritised chaos.

He has instead brought a pragmatism, although that was swiftly unravelled in their recent 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Crystal Palace.

All progress made under the new boss was expunged, as the Yorkshire outfit dropped one of the worst second-half displays in recent memory. This saw many of this aforementioned talent wilt, with even their most experienced and well-thought-of assets disappointing.

Illan Meslier put in a particularly shocking display, as the man who allowed those five goals to sail into his net.

Given how the Frenchman’s reputation and value have soared in recent years, perhaps Gracia could seek to cash in on this shot-stopper come the summer in order to fund his own additions.

How much is Illan Meslier worth now?

Having been signed permanently for just £5m in 2020 after a successful loan spell that led to their promotion, the 23-year-old remained raw but full of immense potential.

His first season in the Premier League saw him translate that form, but since then the £30k-per-week gem has been embroiled in two relegation scraps.

Just last year saw journalist Barry Collins brand him a “liability”, and with his display against the Eagles, it seems little has changed.

Earning an abysmal 5.7 rating, the inconsistent 'keeper made just two saves all game alongside one punch, via Sofascore.

However, it was his rash attempt to clear a set piece that allowed Marc Guehi to steal in for the equaliser; a crushing blow right before half time, that completely altered the trajectory of the game.

The rest was history, as Meslier oversaw a further four goals, few of which he covered himself in glory for.

Given that Football Transfers now rate the apex of his expected Transfer Value at €35.7m (£31.3m), the 526% increase from his initial sum paid makes his potential sale all the more tantalising.

With Tottenham Hotspur one reported willing suitor, to offload the out-of-form dud marks a no-brainer for Gracia.

Leeds United Had A Mare On £40k-p/w Flop

For the second season running, Leeds United have found themselves facing a real scrap for survival heading into the final few weeks of the season, with there currently little to separate the bottom nine clubs in the division.

A major issue for the Whites since their return to the Premier League just under three years ago has been their struggles defensively, with the Elland Road outfit having shipped 44 goals already this season – the fifth-worst record in the league – after previously conceding 79 goals last term.

That dismal recent record could ultimately prove costly for the Yorkshire side if they do slip back into the second tier, with the club set to be left to rue their transfer dealings of late which have contributed to those woes.

A key figure in that shaky backline has been that of Germany international, Robin Koch, with the 26-year-old – who was signed from Bundesliga side Freiburg for a fee of around £13m back in 2020 – having struggled to convince since being snapped up by Marcelo Bielsa.

How much is Robin Koch worth now?

In truth, it may well be that Bielsa and co had something of a nightmare with regard to their signing of the eight-cap dud, with Koch now said to be worth as little as €7m (£6m), according to CIES Football Observatory, with just over a year left to run on his existing deal.

That lowly figure represents a decrease of around 54% from that £13m fee that was paid to bring the versatile centre-back to the Premier League, with such a drop in valuation hardly pointing to astute business for the Leeds hierarchy.

The Kaiserslautern native was reportedly put on the transfer list last summer with the club ready to accept a fee of around £10-£11m to sanction his sale, although it would now appear that the struggling defender could be moved on for even less this time around.

Somewhat bizarrely, despite the £40k-per-week man having been branded "horrible to watch" by reporter Beren Cross, there is said to be interest in his services from Tottenham Hotspur, with that set to prove an opportune time to part ways ahead of next season.

While Koch may well have suffered due to his ability to feature in a variety of positions – having been branded a "utility player" by ex-Leeds defender Danny Mills – the 6 foot 4 brute has rarely convinced when he has been deployed in his preferred, centre-back berth.

Those woes are laid bare by the fact that he ranks in just the bottom 7% among his European peers for pass completion to illustrate his ball-playing difficulties, while the towering asset also ranks in just the top 45% for tackles made and the top 40% for interceptions, having also been something of a liability defensively.

In truth, no matter if Javi Gracia's men are able to stave off the drop or not, Leeds should think about moving on Koch while they can still at least recoup a fee, even if it would represent a disappointing loss on their initial investment.

£97k-p/w Chelsea Star Slammed In England Win

A number of fans online have dropped some brutal claims on Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk after he failed to impress for Ukraine in their clash with England.

What’s the latest on Mykhailo Mudryk?

On Sunday evening, the 22-year-old represented his country at Wembley in a qualifier for Euro 2024. However, the Three Lions managed to pick up all three points with relative ease.

Indeed, two first-half goals saw Gareth Southgate’s men pick up their second win of the international break having also beaten Italy in Naples on Thursday.

It was Bukayo Saka who really stole the show from an England point of view as he laid on a superb assist for Harry Kane to open the scoring before the Arsenal man then curled one into the top corner from the edge of the box to seal the 2-0 victory.

Playing for Ukraine on the same flank, Mudryk failed to have the same sort of impact. Of course, the winger could have ended up being Saka’s teammate had things gone to plan in the winter.

After all, he seemed desperate to join Mikel Arteta and co – making several social posts about his desire to end up in north London – before Chelsea came in and convince Shakhtar Donetsk to sell for £88.5m.

And so, the 22-year-old joined Blues on a long-term contract that could keep him with the club up until 2031 – while getting paid £97,000 per week.

Mudryk has just one assist in his first six Premier League games so far in England, so it’s not as if he’s hit the ground running. At Wembley on Sunday, he failed to win over any doubters too.

Indeed, as per SofaScore, he picked up a 5.7 match rating – the lowest on the pitch for either team. What’s more, he failed to attempt any crosses, pull off any key passes or have any shots on target.

Furthermore, he won just one out of nine ground duels and didn’t make a single tackle.

In comparison, Saka picked up a man-of-the-match 8.8 rating with one goal, one assist, three key passes, two big chances created, eight out of ten ground duels and two tackles.

All in all, it’s clear Mudryk struggled to impress and it’s safe to say fans online noticed. Here are some of the strongest reactions…

Aston Villa: Dubravka may be Olsen upgrade

Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery did not make wholesale changes to his squad in the January transfer window, with only two additions last month.

The Spaniard, who replaced Steven Gerrard at the helm earlier this season, brought in Jhon Duran and Alex Moreno from Chicago Fire and Real Betis respectively to bolster his options at the top end of the pitch and in defence.

Emery may now have one eye on what he wants to do in the summer transfer window and could be working with Johan Lange to identify targets to improve the squad heading into the 2023/24 campaign.

One area in which there could be some change at Villa Park next season is between the sticks. Football Insider recently reported that the club are eyeing up Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka as they consider potential replacements for Emi Martinez, who is attracting interest from across Europe.

Would Martin Dubravka be a good signing for Aston Villa?

Whilst Lange and Emery may be looking at players who could take over from their current number one, Villa must attempt to sign Dubravka to replace Robin Olsen in the summer.

The Villans could form an excellent goalkeeping department by keeping hold of Martinez, assuming that the manager wants to keep him, and bringing in a superb second-choice to push him hard for a starting place.

Unfortunately, Olsen is not good enough to provide serious competition to the Argentina international. The Swedish giant has conceded seven goals in three games in the Premier League this season – saving just 56% of shots on his goal – and let in 1.5 goals more than the xG against him suggests that the average goalkeeper would have.

He also struggled in his Carabao Cup appearance against Manchester United in November, conceding a goal half of the eight shots that he faced and making one error directly leading to a goal.

Dubrakva – who Paul Robinson once hailed as an “inspirational signing” for Newcastle – has conceded 6.7 fewer goals than the xG faced has suggested that he should since the start of the 2019/20 campaign in the Premier League, which shows that the Slovakian colossus is a superb shot-stopper who is able to bail out his defence consistently.

By stark contrast, Olsen – who conceded 17 goals from 12.7 xG faced for Sheffield United in 2021/22 – has been letting his defence down by allowing low-quality shots to beat him.

The £50k-per-week dud has not done enough to suggest that he is good enough to truly push Martinez for his place, and that is why Villa could land a big upgrade on the Sweden international by signing Dubravka, who is a proven Premier League performer based on his impressive statistics in recent years.

The Newcastle ace would offer far more between the sticks, as he has the quality to save the team points with his shot-stopping, whereas Olsen has been costing Villa with his lack of ability to stop the ball going past him.
