Cape Town cloud lingers as Australia resume at home

After a week of dramatic boardroom developments, Australia’s international season gets underway in Perth with the hosts desperate to find some ODI form

The Preview by Andrew McGlashan03-Nov-2018Big PictureThe last time these two sides met…hang on, you don’t need reminding of that. In a quirk of scheduling, the opposition against whom Australia (albeit in a different format) suffered one of the most astonishing episodes witnessed are their first engagement on home soil since then. It’s been a long seven months and a lot has happened to Australian cricket, most of it bad.The past week has been dominated by the boardroom so, in many ways, it is a relief to now get to the on-field action. With a restructured season, this short visit by South Africa is the appetiser to the main course of India who arrive later this month. And, not just because it’s the start of trying to win back the public (if, in truth, they have been lost), it is an important tussle for Australia. They need to reinvent their one-day game which has been in a rut for close to two years now. In 2018 alone they have played 10 ODIs, all against England, and lost nine. Their last victory in a non-dead rubber ODI came against Pakistan in Sydney in January 2017. The World Cup is six months away and Australia look a long way from retaining their title.Leaving aside the enforced absence of Steven Smith and David Warner, Australia, under new captain Aaron Finch, have been able to pick what should be their strongest squad in the circumstances. Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood are fit while Chris Lynn and Glenn Maxwell should have the chance to give an insipid middle order a kick.South Africa were off the pace against the Prime Minister’s XI, but the itinerary hasn’t been the most helpful, arriving into Perth before a return cross-country trip to Canberra for the warm-up. Their batting is missing Hashim Amla and JP Duminy so is not at full strength, but they have a pace attack to rival Australia. Rarely can a one-day series have had six such quality fast bowlers on show.Form guideAustralia LLLLL
South Africa WWWLLAaron Finch with his two one-day vice-captains, Josh Hazlewood and Alex Carey•Getty ImagesIn the spotlightIt seems odd to say for the World Cup holders, but Australia’s one-day batting is out of tune to how the game has developed. Warner’s absence is a massive hole, but of the players available Glenn Maxwell is the one who should be providing the x-factor. There have been plenty of mixed messages for him of late, but if he can’t find a key role in this side something has gone wrong. He played decently against England on a trip where Justin Langer lauded his work ethic, but things still didn’t feel quite right.David Miller has gone down the white-ball only route having shelved his first-class career. Part of his thinking was with the 2019 World Cup in mind, so it’s pretty important that he doesn’t let that slip through his fingers. He was rested from the recent series against Zimbabwe as South Africa assessed other names, but an on-form Miller remains a destructive option. This year, though, hasn’t been his best with one half-century in nine matches against India and Sri Lanka so a good series here would help prevent any pre-World Cup unease. He looked in decent order against the PM’s XI before finding long-on.Team newsFinch said he knew his XI but would not reveal it until the toss. Mitchell Starc is available having overcome the hamstring problem he picked up in the UAE, but there could still be a decision to make as whether to unleash him straightaway. The balance of the attack will also pose a question.Australia (probable) 1 Aaron Finch (capt), 2 Travis Head, 3 Shaun Marsh, 4 Chris Lynn, 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Marcus Stoinis, 7 Alex Carey (wk), 8 Mitchell Starc/Nathan Coulter-Nile, 9 Pat Cummins, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Josh HazlewoodGiven the short lead-in time, the names who featured against the Prime Minister’s XI could all play although Andile Phehlukwayo may come in for Dwaine Pretorius. Faf du Plessis said they would take another look at the surface before deciding whether to consider two spinners. The tail looks a little long, but Dale Steyn’s recent batting form has been a boost.South Africa (probable) 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Aiden Markram, 3 Reeza Hendricks, 4 Faf du Plessis (capt), 5 David Miller, 6 Farhaan Behardien, 7 Andile Phehlukwayo/Dwaine Pretorius, 8 Dale Steyn, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Lungi Ngidi, 11 Imran TahirPitch and conditionsThe Perth Stadium is still in its infancy having only hosted one international so far – the ODI between Australia and England earlier this year. The pitch to be used for this game has been played on once before when England Lions faced Western Australia. The forecast is for a dry, sunny day.Stats and Trivia Imran Tahir needs one wicket to reach 150 in ODIs Since their last win a live ODI, in late January 2017, only Nepal and Netherlands have won fewer matches than Australia Aaron Finch currently has three ODIs hundreds in the year, his best return is four in 2014.Quotes”If you start looking at the end result purely that’s when you can make some errors in judgement and fall down that way. It’s just important to keep it nice and positive and follow our processes as opposed to the full outcome.”
“Whenever you get a chance to play against Australia it feels like you’re playing against a very good cricket team.”

Jeetan Patel spins leaders Warwickshire to innings victory

ScorecardWarwickshire gained a resounding win at Colwyn Bay with a day and 12 overs to spare, to consolidate their position as leaders of Division Two with four games remaining. The margin of victory, an innings and 35 runs, clearly demonstrated the difference between the two teams – the leaders Warwickshire well equipped in every department, with bottom club Glamorgan fielding a young inexperienced team who have been without many of their established players for most of the season.Warwickshire now have a comfortable lead at the top of the table, and if Kent fail to beat Derbyshire, they would be clear favourites to return to Division One. Their captain Jeetan Patel lead by example, ending with 7 for 83 which included his 800th first class wicket.Patel mesmerised the Glamorgan batsmen as he exploited the rough created by Keith Barker bowling his left-arm seamers from the other end. Not only did he get turn and bounce, but also confused the batsmen with his ability to obtain drift with two slips and a bat-pad in attendance. This was Glamorgan’s seventh loss, and their third successive innings defeat and without an overseas player and four front line bowlers, it has been a difficult season for everyone concerned. The arrival of Stephen Cook from South African for the remaining four Championship games should bring some stability to the top order and help the young, inexperienced batsmen. The 35-year-old Cook has played in four Tests, scored 44 first-class centuries and last year played for Durham in the County Championship. He will make his debut for Glamorgan in their next Championship game against Derbyshire which starts on Tuesday. After batting for 10.3 overs on the third morning, Warwickshire gained a 300-run lead on first innings and, apart from two useful partnerships, wickets fell at regular intervals, especially in the afternoon session.Nick Selman, who has been out of runs, took 32 balls to get off the mark and laboured through 38 overs, facing 110 balls before he was out for 14. Kiran Carlson and David Lloyd put on 56 for the fourth wicket, but the highest partnership came from the last wicket pair of Ruaidhri Smith and Michael Hogan. They put on 63 from only 6.2 overs, with Smith scoring an undefeated 52 from 40 balls, before Hogan was bowled by his opposing captain for an enterprising 28.

Virat Kohli drops the mic as England drop their guard against R Ashwin's wiles

England were in a position from which to dominate India, but then gifted the ascendancy back to an alert and hungry visiting side

The Report by Sidharth Monga01-Aug-2018On Yorkshire Day, two Yorkshire batsmen put England in a position from which to dominate India, but then gifted the ascendancy back to an alert and hungry visiting side. The moment of inspiration came from India’s captain Virat Kohli who ran out Joe Root – once again between 50 and 100 – with a direct hit from deep midwicket, after which this side’s biggest match-winner R Ashwin, took out the dangerous duo of Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler. He ended the day needing one wicket to become the first India spinner to take a five-for in England since 2002. England ended the day at 285 for 9, having at one stage been 216 for 3.What will worry England is that they lost wickets to soft dismissals on a slow and low pitch that looked as though it ought to have assisted India more: seven of the nine wickets to fall were either bowled or lbw, which is India’s speciality. But what will infuriate England is that Root and Jonny Bairstow had the attack at their mercy, going at more than six an over in the final session until Root responded to Bairstow’s call for a second run that didn’t exist. It all went downhill for them thereafter.Kohli is ruthless. He doesn’t think twice before accepting such gifts, having all too often been part of the side on the receiving end of such lapses. The moment arose after Bairstow pushed Ashwin towards deep midwicket where Kohli, to judge by his leisurely initial response, didn’t appear to have considered the possibility of the batsmen attempting a second run. But then he heard the call, and all those hours of strength training kicked in. He went from leisure to business in no time, and Root would have struggled even without a stutter. The exclamation point was how Ashwin judged that the shy was going to hit the stumps, and let the ball go through MS Dhoni-style.Kohli seized the moment to remind Root, and all of England, of his bat-drop celebration after he had finished off the Headingley ODI. He blew kisses. He pressed his finger to his lips. And then he uttered the words that might just be the most enduring ones for this series: “Mic drop?” followed by two words that lip-readers will tell you were of four and three letters, the second of which is “off”. There has been so much talk of Kohli’s batting and his record in England, but here Kohli the fielder had opened the door for India to barge through.Joe Root’s dive couldn’t save him from being run out•Getty Images

Even before this brilliance in the field, Kohli had had a lively start to his day. He dropped Cheteshwar Pujara from India’s starting XI, picked only one spinner, and announced to the world that he wouldn’t look back and regret it if things went wrong. We make a decision and try to make the best of it, he has always said. And after losing the toss, his new-ball bowlers were losing their discipline when he surprised everybody by bringing Ashwin on in the seventh over of the Test.Ashwin had two left-hand batsmen in his sights, a damp pitch that can often offer turn, and a new ball prone to natural variation when it lands on the seam. Out of India’s limited-overs sides, under pressure every time a wristspinner does well with the white ball, and always reminded of his record in these parts of the world, Ashwin showed none of that anxiety. In only his second over, Ashwin set Alastair Cook up beautifully: a quick arm ball to push him back, a slow offbreak to lure him forward, another arm ball, another offbreak, and then the killer offbreak that pitched on middle, much straighter than the rest. The bat face closed ever so slightly, and the slow ball, given every chance to turn by the revs and the seam position towards short third man, spun past the defensive prod.As the early moisture dried out, England’s batsmen – Root and Keaton Jennings, the latter dropped on 9 by Ajinkya Rahane at slip – the turn went out and the batsmen became more comfortable. Ishant Sharma was too short, Umesh Yadav too straight, and it was left to Mohammed Shami, returning from personal problems and a failed fitness test, to keep India in the game. He did so with the wickets of Jennings and Malan in the middle session, but an urgent Bairstow had begin to take the momentum away from India in the second hour of the middle session.India looked ragged at the start of the final session. Shami was down on pace. Ashwin was attacked. Root and Bairstow were scoring at will. Even defensive fields were not working. It looked like Root had gone past those concentration breaks that had resulted in his last 10 half-centuries not getting translated into hundreds. And then they took the ill-advised second. Moments later, Bairstow dragged Umesh onto his own stumps.Ashwin is often criticised for using too many variations. A lazy bit of advice that every expert gives to him is to concentrate only on the offbreak. Here he showed he didn’t need that advice. He used his variations, a lot of them, but he also showed he is a bowler at peace with, and in total control of, his game. The arm ball with the upright seam swerved beautifully away from the right-handers. He even bowled a front-of-the-hand legbreak that swung back in. And then natural variation did the trick. He bowled an offbreak that turned enough to beat Buttler’s inside edge but not enough to miss the leg stump. Stokes played hesitantly at a long hop, offering a return catch. Not long before, it had seemed India were in for a long leather hunt on day two, but with England suddenly in freefall, it seemed the India openers might have to take guard on day one itself.Allrounder Sam Curran kept that from happening, but Ishant and Ashwin inflicted one final blow each before stumps to make the day India’s beyond any reasonable doubt.

Ranking the best MLS stadiums in the Eastern Conference

Football is unquestionably the world's game, with groups playing it in all four corners of the globe. Even the US is starting to succumb to the beautiful game, with Major League Soccer seeming to go from strength to strength with every passing season.

With that in mind, we here at Football FanCast have decided to rank all of the stadiums in MLS, starting with the Eastern Conference.

15 Yankee Stadium – New York City FC

Kicking things off is one of America's most famous and nicest sporting grounds, the Yankee Stadium. Its place on the bottom of this list might confuse you, given how beloved and storied it is as a sporting venue, but there is a good reason, we promise.

It's a terrible place to watch football.

While the maximum capacity of the stadium in its current guise is only 46,000, the vast gap between the stands and where the pitch is makes watching games more difficult than it should be. Worse still, the team averaged just 17,180 fans at home in 2022, making the cavernous stadium feel even more so.

In short, it's a fantastic stadium but a terrible place to watch the football.

14 Gillette Stadium – New England Revolution

Coming in ever so slightly ahead of Yankee Stadium on our list is New England Revolution's Gillette Stadium.

The main issue with the stadium is that it was designed for American football, meaning that it is absolutely massive, and with the Rev's lack of success in recent years, they get nowhere close to filling the thing.

The only reason it just edges Yankee Stadium is that the seats are at least much closer to the pitch, making it far easier to actually see what's going on in the game.

13 Soldier Field – Chicago Fire

You might be noticing a bit of a trend here, but another ground low on the list and another ground built for a sport other than football.

Chicago Fire shares Soldier Field with NFL side Chicago Bears, and while this has probably helped the team financially, it hurts the atmosphere at games.

The stadium can hold 61,500 fans, but the Fire averaged just 15,848 per game last year.

12 Bank of America Stadium – Charlotte FC

Right, this is the last NFL stadium on our list, technically, and it's the Bank of America stadium, home of Charlotte FC and the Carolina Panthers NFL franchise.

The ground shares all the other NFL-related issues as the ones before it on this list, but it finds itself higher for two reasons. One, it held the second largest crowd to attend an MLS game ever, 74,479, when the LA Galaxy visited for Charlotte's inaugural MLS game last March.

Second, the team averaged 35,260 fans at home last season, the second highest in the entire league.

11 DRV PNK Stadium – Inter Miami

Here we are, the first ground on the list explicitly built for football, Inter Miami's DRV PNK Stadium.

That said, while they earn some bonus points for having a ground built for football, they also lose some points as it's just temporary, something that becomes very apparent when you see the temporary stands.

There was also an issue with atmosphere and attendance until a certain Argentine arrived from Paris earlier this summer. Since then, getting a ticket for games has been practically impossible, and the atmosphere has dramatically improved.

We aren't sure we can give that to the ground, though.

10 Audi Field – D.C. United

Opened in 2018. DC United's Audi Field is a genuinely nice-looking ground and has seen some impressive moments in recent years.

The one that instantly springs to mind is that Wayne Rooney performance against Orlando City when he won a tackle on the halfway line and produced a stunning cross for Luciano Acosta to score the 96th-minute winner.

The club averaged 16,256 fans a game last season, which is pretty good going with a max capacity of 20,000.

9 Saputo Stadium – CF Montreal

The first stadium on the list that isn't in the USA is CF Montreal's (formerly the Montreal Impact) Saputo Stadium.

There really isn't an awful lot wrong here. It's a nice-looking, football-specific ground that generally wouldn't look out of place in a European football league. In fact, its design somewhat reminds us of Union Berlin's ground, well, a little bit, anyway.

The club averaged 15,905 fans a game last season, which, considering the stadium's capacity is just 19,619, we reckon is pretty good going.

8 TQL Stadium – FC Cincinnati

FC Cincinnati's TQL Stadium is one of the newest grounds in the MLS, seeing its first action in the 2021 season.

From a purely visual standpoint, it's a stunner. The outside of the stadium is covered in thin aluminum poles that light up in the team's dynamic blue and orange colour scheme, and the wraparound roof actually covers all the seats.

The ground can hold 26,000 fans, with the team averaging 22,487 fans per game last season. The fans have also built up a reputation as some of the most passionate in the country.

7 Red Bull Arena – New York Red Bulls

This is an interesting one as New York Red Bulls' Red Bull Arena is, for all intents and purposes, a fantastic football ground, with everything you could want from a modern ground and generally a decent atmosphere on game days.

However, there are two issues with its location. First of all, despite being called the New York Red Bulls, they don't actually play in the city – let alone the state – instead, the stadium is located in New Jersey, making getting there more difficult than it should be for fans.

The second problem is that it's surrounded by industrial sites and warehouses, making the journey to the ground a pretty miserable affair for all involved.

6 Lower.com Field – Columbus Crew

Columbus Crew's new Lower.com stadium is easily one of the nicest-looking grounds in the entire league, let alone the Eastern Conference.

Its sharp angles on the outside and steep two-tiered seating on the inside make for an incredibly visually appealing football stadium and should help cultivate an intimidating atmosphere. Oh, there's also the small bonus of the multiple taprooms within the stadium for beer lovers.

With a maximum capacity of 20,371, the Crew did incredibly well to average 19,237 fans a game last season.

Playing for West Indies the 'ultimate goal' – Narine

The offspinner has dismissed suggestions that he is not interested in playing for West Indies; it is just a matter of not rushing back to ODIs with his remodelled bowling action, he said

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Feb-2018Sunil Narine has dismissed suggestions that he is not interested in playing for West Indies. The offspinner said that playing for West Indies remains an “ultimate goal” for him.Recently Narine, who has been working on his remodelled bowling action, told selectors he wanted to focus on his bowling and get his confidence back and hence he would not want to feature in the World Cup Qualifiers that will be played in March. Now Narine is playing for Trinidad & Tobago in the Regional Super50, the local one-day tournament. On Monday, he became the highest wicket-taker during the course of a hat-trick he picked up against Windward Islands. He also has the best economy rate so far in the tournament (2.33), and the best match figures as well: 5 for 10, against Combined Campuses and Colleges.Regardless of this form, Narine does feel he is not ready to bowl for West Indies in ODIs yet. While he played the solitary Twenty20 in England last September, the last time Narine represented West Indies in ODIs was in October 2016, in the UAE, against Pakistan.Since then Narine has been busy playing domestic T20 leagues even while asking selectors not to pick him for ODIs. According to Johnny Grave, Cricket West Indies’ chief executive officer, Narine told the selectors that he is not yet fully confident about his bowling action, and would like to carry on working with specialist coach, Carl Crowe, on his action. Grave said he could understand Narine’s position and was willing to grant the player a bit more time.”It’s nothing like that [not wanting to play for West Indies],” Narine told , a Barbados-based weekly cricket TV programme. “I just don’t want to rush back into international cricket and the 50-over game. I think I need to play some [domestic] 50-overs cricket, get accustomed again [instead of] rushing back and making a mess of myself.”According to Narine, he wanted to “enjoy” his game; that way he could build his confidence before returning to the bigger stage. “It’s about my self-performance, and about self-belief, going out there and trying to perform for Trinidad and Tobago; once I can do that, I will be available for West Indies again.”I think playing for West Indies is the ultimate goal. I think you have to enjoy cricket, no matter where. So I will see how these [domestic] games go in the 50-over [format] and if I am comfortable and enjoying it, why not.”

Spurs Could Sign Next Rashford In "Generational" £43m Gem

Tottenham Hotspur are pushing to make late summer signings to replace world-class striker Harry Kane, who completed a £100m transfer to Bayern Munich earlier this month.

The north London club have been active this summer after a miserable Premier League campaign last time out, with the club finishing eighth in the division and hence failing to qualify for Europe.

Ange Postecoglou has been brought in to lead from the dugout, and has indeed made a wealth of signings, including James Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario and Micky van de Ven, and is now seemingly eyeing up another attacking acquisition in Barcelona star Ansu Fati.

What's the latest on Ansu Fati to Tottenham?

According to El Chiringuito TV – via Caught Offside – Tottenham are considering signing talented Barcelona winger Fati before the transfer window slams shut next week, with Aston Villa also interested.

Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…

The player's agent, Jorge Mendes, is eager to provide his client with a new stomping ground, touting the young Spaniard at €50m (£43m).

How good is Ansu Fati?

Having waved goodbye to their star man in Kane, there will understandably have been some trepidation pervading around the Lilywhites support, with the club's record goalscorer not easily replaced.

But if the opening phase of the campaign is anything to go by, life under Postecoglou could prove fruitful, with a battling away draw against Brentford preceding a succession of victories against Manchester United and Bournemouth.

Tottenham are demonstrating early signs of a fluid and cohesive outfit, with them not placing an over-reliance on any one man and playing as a team. Because of this, Fati would perhaps be wise to select the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as his next destination.

Once proclaimed to be a "generational player" by Barcelona boss Xavi, Fati burst onto the scene with frightening ability, scoring eight goals aged just 16 across the 2019/20 term, following up with five goals and four assists from ten outings in the following campaign, only to see a detrimental injury hamper his development.

Now 20, the nine-cap Spain star is on the periphery at Camp Nou and likely needs to move away from Catalonia to kickstart his career, and should Spurs succeed in their pursuit, they could well wield their very own version of Manchester United's Marcus Rashford.

Indeed, while Fati has been playing near the fringes at Barcelona, he still ranks among the top 21% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 1% for total shots, the top 6% for pass completion and the top 1% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90, as per FBref.

Such metrics have prompted the statistics-led site to list Rashford as Fati's most comparable player, with the £300k-per-week Red Devil ranking among the top 1% of positional peers for goals, the top 2% for total shots and the top 6% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90.

With both players blessed with lightning speed and a fleet-footed gait, Fati could rival Rashford's presence by growing into his skin under Postecoglou's stewardship, perhaps finding his shooting boots and emulating his 25-year-old peer's 30-goal campaign for Manchester United last year.

While Fati has endured a rocky road during the early stages of his career, his immense talent is undeniable, and he must now move to kickstart his career and thrive as one of Europe's foremost attacking stars.

Cameron Delport and Evin Lewis scorched away to half-centuries as Dhaka Dynamites resurrected their Bangladesh Premier League title defense with a crushing 65-run win over Khulna Titans in Sylhet. Lewis and Delport went on a six-hitting spree in a period of batting mayhem that lasted nine overs. The two added 116 for the second wicket that hauled Dhaka to 202 for 7 – the first 200-plus total in the tournament since the 2013 edition. No team had ever successfully chased down a 200-plus total in the BPL, and that stayed on Sunday as Khulna managed a measly 137 in their reply, getting bowled out in 18.1 overs, with Jofra Archer having top-scored with 36.The six-barrageBetween them, Lewis and Delport smashed eight sixes. While all of Lewis’ three sixes were over midwicket, Delport favoured the long-on region, where he collected four of his five sixes. Carlos Brathwaite, Abu Jayed and Shafiul Islam bore the brunt of Delport’s destructive form. In the 12th over, Delport shellacked Mosharraf Hossain for 18 runs off five balls, first depositing him over long-on and deep midwicket for successive sixes before reverse-sweeping him for four. Delport complemented his big hits with four fours and finished with 64 off 31 balls, leaving Khulna wondering what could have been avoided had Nazmul Hossain Shanto taken Delport’s catch at long-on when the batsman was on 10.Lewis deposited Shafiul Islam over cow corner before shoveling a four through the same region. But the bowler hit back three deliveries later when Lewis offered a simple catch to cover after failing to get on top of the bounce of a short ball, ending what had been an entertaining stand. The fightbackThe rest of Dhaka’s order couldn’t quite live up to the high bar set by Lewis and Delport. In fact, they could barely gather any steam. As a result, Dhaka slipped from 154 for 1 in the 13th over to finish on 202 for 7 in 20 overs, collecting just 48 runs in the last seven overs, for the loss of six wickets.Jayed was Khulna’s best bowler, taking 2 for 29 in four overs that included the scalp of Delport. Shafiul ended with two wickets too, but at the cost of 41 runs in three overs. Archer and Brathwaite took one wicket apiece, but it was a day to forget for Mosharraf, who gave away 21 runs in his only over. The freefallKhulna’s early run rate in pursuit of 203 was quite good. What didn’t help, though, was losing six wickets inside nine overs. The slide began with Abu Hider getting rid of Shanto in his first over, before Brathwaite fell lbw to Shakib Al Hasan two balls later. Walton and Rilee Rossouw then combined briefly for a third-wicket stand of 35 that ended when Walton slashed Shakib to Kumar Sangakkara behind the stumps. Hider’s one-handed stunner off his own bowling sent back Mahmudullah in the seventh over. A recovery thereafter never materialised. What they said”We just complemented each other and rotated strike well. We both are good strikers of the ball. We both went for it and it paid off tonight.”
