Flintoff's Australian fetish

Stats highlights from England’s historic 115-run win against Australia at Lord’s

  • England’s record against Australia at Lord’s has been quite dismal, but their overall record here since 2000 is pretty impressive: in 20 Tests during this period they’ve won ten and lost only three. The only teams to beat them have been Australia (twice) and South Africa. The win also helps England improve their home win-loss record against Australia to 44-46.
  • The result was bitterly disappointing for Australia, but they managed their highest fourth-innings score in Tests, surpassing the 404 for 3 they scored in that historic run-chase at Leeds in 1948. They also became the first team to touch 400 in the fourth innings of a Test at Lord’s. The previous highest here had been 397, by India in 2002, in a match they lost by 170 runs. Australia’s highest here had been 329 for 3 in a drawn game in 1975.
  • Andrew Flintoff’s 5 for 92 is only his third five-wicket haul in 77 Tests, but two of those have come versus Australia, a team against whom he has now taken 49 wickets in 13 games, at an average of 30.40. Thirty-one of those wickets have come in seven matches in England, at an average of 29.09. In Australia, Flintoff has 18 wickets from six games at 32.66.
  • It’s Flintoff’s first five-for since his 5 for 78 at The Oval against Australia in 2005, a game which England drew to win the series. Since that Test, Flintoff had bowled in 40 innings without taking a five-for, taking only 76 wickets in 24 matches during this period.
  • The 185-run stand between Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin is the second-highest in the fourth innings of a lost Test. It fell just two runs short of the record, which Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers had set against Australia in Durban earlier this year. That match was quite similar to the Lord’s Test, with South Africa staging a comeback after falling behind by a huge margin in the first innings. Australia eventually dismissed South Africa for 370 in the fourth innings to win by 175 runs.
  • Clarke’s superb century also pushed his overseas average to 41.12. It was his fourth hundred abroad, but his home record is still a lot better – seven centuries, and an average of 58.70.
  • The last time Australia lost at Lord’s, they went on to win the series 2-1. Of the last three Ashes contests in England, two – in 1997 and in 2005 – were won by the team which fell behind in the series.

'As a bowler, I need to dictate terms' – Deshpande's powerplay impact floors SRH

His career-best 4 for 27 included the wickets of Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma and Anmolpreet Singh in the first six overs

Finch: Gaikwad stays consistent despite fickle nature of T20s

In dewy conditions, Tushar Deshpande’s three strikes in the powerplay dented Sunrisers Hyderabad so hard, that the big-hitting side could never recover against Chennai Super Kings during their chase of 213 on Sunday. Deshpande finished with 4 for 27, his career-best IPL figures, and told broadcasters after CSK’s 78-run win that he wanted to “dictate the terms” out there.”We had a specific plan that even if they hit us from a good ball we will try and focus on bowling that good ball again,” Deshpande said. “We won’t change according to them. As bowlers in this format, I need to dictate the terms to the batters. I tried to do that and it paid dividends today.”Deshpande’s strikes with the new ball were important because CSK came into the game with only nine powerplay wickets in IPL 2024, the lowest among all teams. He dismissed Travis Head and Anmolpreet Singh with full deliveries in the second over and then tested Abhishek Sharma with a short-ball dismissal in the fourth over. From that position of 40 for 3, SRH could only muster 134 in 18.5 overs.”The only plan was to keep bowling and having patience against a batting line-up like SRH who are very aggressive in the powerplay. So that paid dividends for us,” he said. “I think bowling that length in the powerplay is very crucial. Even if the batsman is hitting, I always back myself to bowl that ball again. So I challenge the batsman to hit me again on that length. That’s my mindset always and it worked out today.”Related

CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, and the Player of the Match for his 98 in the first innings, said the powerplay wickets from Deshpande ended some concerns the side had over their penetration in the first six overs. However, Gaikwad said the “match-turning spell” belonged not to Deshpande, but Ravindra Jadeja, who took 1 for 22 in four overs and conceded only one six while dealing with the wet ball.Tushar Deshpande soaks in the applause on sending the in-form Abhishek Sharma back•Associated Press

“That was one area where [in the last] two-three games we lost momentum, not getting enough wickets in the powerplay,” Gaikwad said. “Wickets in the powerplay with the impact player rule definitely puts pressure on the opposition. It is the only way you can put the opposition on the back foot. Yes [Deshpande] he bowled really well and he’s doing hard work throughout the season. Even last year and previous to that, he’s been doing well and his hard work is paying off.”Special mention to Jaddu [Jadeja] as well. In these wet conditions, four overs for 20-25 [22] odd runs, for me that was the match-turning spell.”Gaikwad also addressed concerns over his fitness after needing the physio during his innings of 98 and later while fielding. He said that batting long in the last few innings, together with fielding in humid conditions, did take a toll.”It is just that… too hot and humid conditions,” Gaikwad said. “Even in the last game I was there throughout [batting] for 20 overs and fielding for 20 overs. Even today I was there for almost 19 overs, so little bit tough to breathe but I was just making sure I take my time and not really rush myself.”Third-placed CSK will next play Punjab Kings at home on Wednesday. They are tied on ten points with four other sides.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Brentford had hoped to have a clear run at the youngster, as they seek to reinvest some of the £71 million ($95m) raised from Mbeumo’s sale to Old Trafford. The race is now on, with it possible that Gueye will cost more than his initial £15m ($20m) asking price.

India and SA bank on franchise T20s for World Cup selection

India have just six T20Is left to identify their best XI before next year’s World Cup in the West Indies and USA, but Suryakumar Yadav, who is their captain for the three-match series in South Africa, isn’t too perturbed by the limited game time. Suryakumar added that IPL 2024, which will precede the T20 World Cup, will help India’s team management nail down their combination.”I feel there are limited T20s going forward, before the T20 World Cup, but then we play 14 league games in the IPL as well,” Suryakumar said on the eve of the series opener against South Africa in Durban. “And players who have been playing in these T20 internationals… they’ve played a lot of games, and they have a lot of experience under their belt. So, we don’t think there will be an issue or any problem in selecting the squad because everyone knows their roles really well and responsibilities really well – [like] how to play in different situations.”Like India, South Africa have only six T20Is lined up before the 2024 World Cup. In addition to having the advantage of playing three T20Is in the Caribbean in the lead-up to the marquee tournament, South Africa could pick players from the SA20, which will run from January 10 to February 10.Related

  • Ngidi ruled out of India T20Is with ankle sprain, also doubtful for Tests

“It’s a strange one,” their captain Aiden Markram said. “Not ideal that we have only six games [before the T20 World Cup] but we’re fortunate that there’s still a lot of T20 cricket, in terms of SA20 and the domestic T20 competition just after that. Hopefully, everyone can be fit and ready to go for us when it comes down to selecting the World Cup squad, which we will keep all our fingers crossed for. But guys will be playing T20 cricket and ultimately we will be able to get a good gauge of what our best squad is that we can send out for the World Cup.”For India, the spotlight is on their new finishers Rinku Singh and Jitesh Sharma. Both batters have lit up the IPL with their middle-order firepower and showed glimpses of that firepower in the recent T20Is at home against Australia. This tour presents an opportunity to strengthen their cases for selection for the T20 World Cup.”See, the number Rinku and Jitesh have been batting at, at the IPL and for their state teams, is the same number they are being given an opportunity here,” Suryakumar said, “And they are being told to do the same thing they do for their states and their franchises; [it’s] nothing different. That’s what they have done too; whenever we were in trouble in the T20 series [against Australia], they showed a lot of character, which was the demanded of the team. All I told them was that whatever you think, just think of the team first and then about your personal milestones. That will make the situation better.”Another area of potential concern for India is the absence of a reliable sixth-bowling option with Hardik Pandya out injured. India didn’t use the part-time spin of Yashasvi Jaiswal or Tilak Varma in the T20I series at home against Australia, but Suryakumar was pleased with the options at his disposal. Tilak bowled in five of the seven matches he had played for Hyderabad in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, India’s domestic T20 tournament.”We do have a sixth-bowling option,” Suryakumar said. “There are lots of people to bowl. When the time is right, you will see. Not just six, there could be seven or eight too.”None of the men in India’s current squad have played a T20I in South Africa, but Suryakumar backed them to adapt to the conditions. At Kingsmead, the venue for the first T20I, the square boundaries are fairly short, and the pitches are more conductive to seam bowlers than spinners.”I think the key to success playing on such wickets will be to be yourself,” Suryakumar said. “The boys are really prepared – we’ve just come out of a nice T20 series, and we played on all fast tracks in India and we’re really equipped for it. Regarding the strokes, the batters have batted on these kinds of wickets and I’m sure they will enjoy playing here in South Africa.”

Moeen Ali turns on the power as England overwhelm Bangladesh

England’s bowlers enjoy 37-over work-out as World Cup opener looms in Ahmedabad

Andrew Miller02-Oct-2023England 197 for 6 in 24.1 overs (Moeen 56, Mustafizur 2-23) beat Bangladesh 188 for 9 in 37 overs (Mehidy 74, Tanzid 45, Topley 3-23) by four wickets (DLS)England enjoyed a useful, if hyper-extended, workout under the Guwahati floodlights, as a three-hour rain delay and even a nearby earthquake couldn’t prevent the world champions from finalising their tournament plans in a high-octane run-chase against Bangladesh. The result, while immaterial, was secured with a blizzard of sixes from Moeen Ali, whose 56 from 39 balls secured a four-wicket win with a hefty 77 balls remaining of their rain-reduced 37-over chase.Bangladesh had their moments, particularly while Tanzid Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman were showing their ability with bat and ball in the powerplay, but ultimately they were overwhelmed by England’s unrelenting aggression. The tone of England’s attacking display was set by a bristling Jonny Bairstow who stretched his legs for 34 from 21 balls, in the manner that had been denied him during the “utter chaos” of England’s 38-hour trek to India’s eastern extremities.Jos Buttler kept up the belligerent tempo to make 30 from 15 in his short and on-point visit to the crease, and though Liam Livingstone came and went tamely, by the time Moeen holed out with four runs to win, he’d launched six sixes into the Assam night to confirm his side will be striding confidently into this week’s tournament opener against New Zealand.Of far more relevance than the result was the time in the middle for a host of cooped-up players, most particularly the 2019 veterans, Mark Wood and Adil Rashid, who have both been wrapped in cotton wool for the past few weeks, and Joe Root, who remains short of form and confidence, but who survived a painful blow to the groin, as well as a grim error from Taskin Ahmed at deep backward square, to anchor the chase with an unbeaten 26 from 40 balls. The contest duly finished some eight-and-a-half hours after the first ball had been bowled, but for a time, it had seemed that England’s preparations – across both this game and Saturday’s wash-out against India – would be limited to a 30-over work-out in the afternoon’s truncated action. At least in that time, England were able to give a clean bill of health to nine members of their bowling attack, including all six of their frontline fast bowlers … although they are now about to be folded back up and stowed away once more in economy class for Tuesday’s flight to Ahmedabad. Most crucial among those was Wood, England’s fastest and most ferocious point of difference, who had not been unleashed in a competitive environment since the end of July, ostensibly due to a bruised heel sustained during the Ashes. Not for the first time, he showed his explosive pace from the outset of his three-over burst, and should have claimed the wicket of both of Bangladesh’s most effective batters.Mehidy Hasan Miraz anchored Bangladesh’s innings with a hard-earned 74 from 89 balls, but he should have fallen for 7, to the sixth ball of Wood’s return, when, after a tentative start to his knock, he fenced a lifter outside off but neither Buttler nor Root at first slip reacted in time to cling onto the edge.Mark Wood was one of nine England bowlers to get a workout•ICC via Getty ImagesHowever, Wood got his reward two overs later instead. Tanzid’s 45 from 44 balls at the top of the order had gone some way to confirming his readiness to fill the sizeable boots of Tamim Iqbal, but having picked off seven fours and a flamboyant six over deep midwicket off Reece Topley, he was caught in two minds as Wood fired a lifter across his bows, and inside-edged a tentative push onto his own stumps. The first 20 overs of Bangladesh’s innings was an exclusive diet of seam, as England’s quicks each lined up for a short gallop, and showed their readiness for the main event through a combination of economy and incision, with only Chris Woakes and Gus Atkinson going un-rewarded in their five-over contributions. However, the other major plus for England was the return of Rashid, who missed the bulk of their recent series against New Zealand with a calf niggle. He showed no ill-effects after entering the attack in the 21st over of Bangladesh’s innings and struck twice in five overs to remove the veteran pairing of Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah – the latter to a full-toss but the former to a brilliantly disguised googly that skidded into his stumps under an attempted cut. When the rain arrived, it seemed that Bangladesh’s 153 for 5 in 30 overs would be the end of that. Instead, they returned – after one aborted restart – for seven further overs, in which the quicks got back into the action. Sam Curran struck with the first ball of his second spell, before both Topley and David Willey found themselves on hat-tricks, the former some five hours after luring Bangladesh’s stand-in captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto, into a sketchy slice to deep third.Topley’s display epitomised the combination of rustiness and raw threat that England are carrying into this tournament. His somewhat ropey first over went for 13, including a wide and two no-balls, but he swiftly hit back with the first ball of his second as Litton Das gloved a lifter down the leg-side to depart for 5 (although there were some doubts as to whether his hand was off the bat at the point of contact).England’s reply was raucous from the outset. Dawid Malan, their in-form opener, caressed a poetic cut for a first-ball four, only to scuff his second from Mustafizur straight to slip. But Bairstow smashed four fours and a six in seven balls to turbo-charge the powerplay, with England’s 50 coming up inside four overs before Mustafizur powered a yorker past his toes to end the fun.It took an even better ball from Hasan Mahmud to dislodge an ominously free-flowing Harry Brook. His four fours in a 15-ball 17 had all been stamps of raw class until he was bowled through the gate by a savage nipbacker on a tight off-stump line. Buttler then edged his second ball off Shoriful Islam low past the keeper before smoking his third high over extra cover for six – and as if to prove he was in no mood to stand on ceremony, he then top-edged his fifth over the head of Taskin, who could have had an easy catch had he been sitting back on the rope.England’s only real concern remains the form of Root, who at least endured to the end of the chase, but rarely looked capable of raising his tempo in the manner that was coming so effortlessly at the other end. He should have holed out to Tanzim Hasan Sakib for 7 from 19, but that man Taskin once again over-ran his attempted catch at fine leg, then let the ball dribble over the rope too. Tellingly, that would be Root’s only boundary of his innings. Fortunately for England, Moeen and Co. had no such power failures to report.

"At the national team, he was the only player who knew what it was like to be at Real Madrid so a lot were asking questions. A lot of people think he played a big part in me coming here but it was a big opportunity for me and it felt like the right time."

The curse of the Chelsea No.9 shirt: Can Liam Delap avoid the same fate as Alvaro Morata, Fernando Torres and more at Stamford Bridge?

The new signing from Ipswich will wear the infamous jersey during his debut season at Stamford Bridge after completing his £30m move

So many of the greatest strikers in world football have worn the No.9 shirt for club and country – from Alan Shearer to Ronaldo, Gabriel Batistuta to Robert Lewandowski.

At Chelsea, however, the No.9 seems to carry more weight than most. Players throughout the Premier League era at Stamford Bridge having struggled while wearing the iconic number, with former manager Thomas Tuchel even going as far to agree with the assertion that "it's cursed".

Liam Delap, then, is a brave man after the new £30 million ($41m) signing chose the No.9 jersey for his first season in west London after arriving from Ipswich Town. He will become the first player since the 2022-23 season to don the jersey, so can the England Under-21 international be the man to break the curse?

So which players have worn the shirt and how bad has it really been? GOAL runs down those who have worn the infamous jersey in recent times…

    The early EPL years (1992-2000)

The first player to wear the No.9 in the Premier League era for Chelsea was Tony Cascarino, between 1992-1994. He set the unfortunate precedent for players to don the jersey, though, as the Ireland international scored just six league goals across two seasons.

However the following two players enjoyed rather more success in the No.9 – Mark Stein wore it between 1994-1996, knocking in a respectable 25 goals across 63 games in Chelsea blue. This was when they were a mid-table side in the pre-Roman Abramovich era, remember.

Stein was followed by Gianluca Vialli, who achieved legendary status at Chelsea in his time as the No.9 from 1996-1999. He won the FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup – before becoming manager in 1998.

However the No.9 curse was firmly re-established in the 1999-2000 season by Chris Sutton, who scored only one league goal all campaign after arriving in a £10 million move from Blackburn Rovers.

    Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (2000-04)

Before the stinkers, let us salute a Chelsea great and arguably the greatest No.9 for the club in the Premier League era.

A club-record signing for £15m from Atletico Madrid, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink scored on his debut on his way to bagging 26 goals in his first Blues season, and 29 in 2001-02. His goal tally fell slightly in his final two Stamford Bridge campaigns, but he formed a key part of the final pre-Abramovich era team, before being sold to Middlesbrough in 2004.

    Mateja Kezman (2004-05)

The 2004-05 season was historic for Chelsea fans, as they swept to the Premier League title under Jose Mourinho, on the back of several star signings.

However, for every Frank Lampard, there was a Mateja Kezman. The Serbian arrived with a big reputation from his time at PSV, but scored just four goals in 25 games and was sold on to Atletico Madrid at season's end.

    Hernan Crespo (2005-06)

Hernan Crespo took over the vacant No.9 after Kezman left – and despite those who claim Crespo was an underwhelming Chelsea player, he was actually integral in their second-straight league crown.

Crespo scored 13 goals in all competitions – however he and his family never settled in England, which meant Blues fans never saw him at his peak. He was loaned to Inter the following season and saw out his Chelsea contract in Italy.

Grealish's game-time dwindled for Manchester City during the course of the 2024-25 season, clocking only 715 minutes in 20 Premier League games. THE BIGGER PICTURE

It has been suggested that Grealish's reduced importance to City has been due to a falling out with Guardiola, but the Catalan coach strongly refuted such claims at his final post-match press conference of the season.

  • WHAT GUARDIOLA SAID

Guardiola was asked about Grealish's omission on the final day, to which he replied: "It was selection. The last two months, I’ve had to leave five or six players at home every time. This time, I decided it was these guys. No more than that. Of course, Jack has to play. Jack is an unbelievable player who has to play football every single day, every three days. It didn’t happen this season and last season neither, they need to do it with us or in another place. But that is a question of Jack, his agent and the club. If he stays, we’ll be fine, he will fight like he fought since day one when he arrived. But today it’s for something else, for example I rotate and Rico [Lewis] and Macca [James McAtee] was not there and [Abdukodir] Khusanov and Vitor [Reis] and [Claudio] Echeverri was here. So it was there. I try to move the players like it was nothing. Today, it was Jack."

The City boss was then confronted with another Grealish question, and he quickly snapped: "No, don’t ask me about Jack, please! Who said I’m not happy with him? Why don’t you ask me about McAtee for example? It’s not personal, I don’t have any problem with the players. If you are saying I’m selecting them they’re not in trouble or I’m not selecting them they are in trouble, it’s not about that. I had to get rid of six players last game, today five because [Mateo] Kovacic was sent off last game, otherwise it’d be six again. I treat Jack like I treat Khusanov, like I treat Vitor and McAtee. It is not anything personal about Jack. What happens in the future is a job for Hugo [Viana, new sporting director], Txiki [Begiristain, outgoing sporting director] and agents, not me.”

When finally asked if he wants Grealish to stay, Guardiola shouted: "Next one."
