Starc takes the fastest five-wicket haul in men's Test history

Mitchell Starc joined the 400-wicket club in a dramatic fashion as he blew West Indies’ top order away with a triple-wicket opening over on the third day at Sabina Park and went on to take the fastest five-wicket haul in Test history, in just 15 balls. In his 100th Test, Starc produced one of the greatest opening overs. He removed John Campbell first ball, the fourth time in his career he had struck with the opening delivery of an innings, when the left-hand batter edged a perfect outswinger to substitute wicketkeeper Josh Inglis, who was standing in for the concussed Alex Carey.Four balls later, debutant Kevlon Anderson shouldered arms as the ball swung back to strike his shin in front of middle stump, yet he reviewed the plumbest of lbws. Next delivery, another one curved back to take Brandon King’s inside edge and demolish the stumps. It was the sixth time in Test history a team had been 0 for 3.Related

Mikyle Louis survived the hat-trick ball at the start of Starc’s second over, but fittingly his 400th wicket came with another trademark inswinger as he trapped Louis lbw, becoming the fourth Australian bowler to the landmark after Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Nathan Lyon. The extraordinary scenes continued when, two balls later, he added Shai Hope lbw to bring up a five-wicket haul in just 15 deliveries, beating the previous record – jointly held by Ernie Toshack, Stuart Broad and Scott Boland – by four deliveriesStarc had already established himself as the king of pink-ball cricket, having dominated the format in Australia. Salah sulks and Doue dominates: 3 Winners and 3 losers from UCL gameweek 3

18 games, over 50 goals and plenty to take note of: Gameweek three of the Champions League provided us all with another spectacle. Once again, it was the usual suspects who dominated as Paris Saint-Germain handed Bayer Leverkusen an evening to forget and Liverpool got back to winning ways in style against Eintracht Frankfurt.

That’s not to say there were no shocks entirely, however. Thomas Frank’s Tottenham Hotspur side stuttered again, this time against AS Monaco, whilst Antonio Conte will certainly be having words with his Napoli side following their humiliating 6-2 defeat at the hands of PSV Eindhoven.

But in a week centred around goals galore, who stands out as the biggest winners and losers on matchday three of the Champions League campaign?

Winners: Wirtz ends wait and PSG thrash Leverkusen

Winner: Florian Wirtz (Liverpool)

After four straight defeats in all competitions, Liverpool’s trip to face Frankfurt suddenly became of the upmost importance. Defeat would have seen Arne Slot become the first Liverpool manager in the Premier League era to lose five games on the bounce and such a stat would have sparked the most serious concerns of his Anfield tenure.

When Rasmus Kristensen found the bottom corner of Giorgi Mamardashvili’s goal in the 26th minute, it looked as though the Reds were in for another miserable evening. It was the type of goal that they’ve become all too familiar with as of late.

A quick-fire triple from Hugo Ekitike, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate soon signalled a sigh of relief around the Liverpool dugout, however, before Florian Wirtz made his mark in the second-half.

Assisting goals for Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai, the German ended his 10-game wait for a goal contribution and could now finally be on his way to stardom in a Liverpool shirt.

Winner: PSG

They may have stuttered in Ligue 1 in recent weeks, sitting second behind Marseille, but when the world is watching PSG remain in ruthless form. This time, it was Bayer Leverkusen who suffered. The once-invincible Germans looked anything but against the European champions, who found themselves 4-1 up before Leverkusen could even take shelter at half-time.

The onslaught only continued in the second period. Following goals from Willian Pacho, Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Nuno Mendes, Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha all got in the act to secure a stunning 7-2 victory.

In full flow, PSG once again look unstoppable and that may well leave them on course to retain their European crown this season.

Winner: Fermin Lopez (Barcelona)

When heaping praise on a La Masia graduate, it’s usually Lamine Yamal who finds himself in the headlines. Alas, in recent weeks, Fermin Lopez has finally received his flowers.

The Spaniard, who attracted transfer interest from the Premier League in the summer, has proved his worth at Barcelona and enjoyed one of his best games yet against Olympiakos.

Netting a hat-trick as Barcelona thumped the Greek side 6-1, Lopez is staking a serious claim that he should be starting for Hansi Flick’s side every week.

Losers: Salah woes continue and Simeone loses at his own game Loser: Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

Liverpool desperately needed a win in Frankfurt and Mohamed Salah desperately needed a goal. After 90 minutes in Germany, however, only one of those things happened and the Egyptian was left to rue yet another missed chance.

Having been dropped for Hugo Ekitike in Slot’s frontline, Salah needed to prove a point when he emerged from the bench. But after failing to square the ball to Wirtz in an attempt to end his own drought from open-play, his current confidence problem was laid bare for the onwatching Reds.

Some have been quick to criticise the winger and he has since taken Liverpool out of his Twitter header in what could be a worrying sign for those at Anfield. Liverpool may be back to winning ways, but they’ve still got a major Salah problem to solve.

Loser: Bayer Leverkusen

Life without Xabi Alonso, Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and others was never going to be easy for Leverkusen. But their 7-2 humiliation at the hands of PSG in front of their own fans remains unacceptable. They tried and failed their Erik ten Hag experiment earlier this season. Now, it’s the turn of Kasper Hjulmand to turn things around.

So far, however, his side have been incredibly vulnerable defensively and serious steps need to be taken before they can compete among Europe’s best once again.

What makes the PSG thrashing all the more frustrating is the fact that Leverkusen entered the game without a defeat in eight games in all competitions. Those games featured plenty of goals, but there was at least an expectation that the Germans would hand the French champions a competitive outing. That proved to be anything but the case, though.

Loser: Diego Simeone (Atletico Madrid)

In one of the most highly-anticipated games in this season’s Champions League calendar, Arsenal played host to Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid side in a clash between two sides who perfect the defensive side of their game before launching forward.

It was the experienced defensive mastermind vs the new kid on the block in many ways, but it was the latter who came out on top. Simeone could do nothing but watch on as he was beaten at his own game and then some.

Arsenal ran riot, becoming the first-ever side to score four goals in 13 minutes against Simeone’s Atletico Madrid side, as they wrapped things up in a ruthless second-half performance.

It was a statement display from the Gunners and an evening to forget for Simeone, whose powers are beginning to fade on Europe’s biggest stage.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has heaped praise on an “important” member of the squad following his return from injury.

Chelsea face Premier League title rivals Liverpool amid selection crisis

The Blues have endured a pretty underwhelming start to the 2025/2026 campaign, and it doesn’t get any easier as Maresca’s side prepare to host Premier League champions Liverpool this afternoon.

Maresca, after winning the Conference League, Club World Cup and qualifying for the Champions League last season, has been tasked with building upon 2024/2025’s feats with over £280 million spent on new recruits in the summer window.

However, he is also forced to lean on a roster full of youth and a starting eleven boasting an average age of just 24.1 (BBC), with injuries crippling the tactician so far.

As October arrives, Chelsea’s absentee list includes Liam Delap, Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo, Dario Essugo, Andrey Santos, Trevoh Chalobah and star forward Cole Palmer — who are all set to miss today’s clash with Arne Slot’s side at Stamford Bridge.

Fofana and Tosin are not expected to return until after the international break, with the former undergoing concussion protocol, while Chalobah is serving a one-match suspension after his red card against Brighton last weekend.

Colwill is set to miss the majority of this season after rupturing his ACL in pre-season too — leaving Maresca absolutely bereft of centre-backs to choose from against Liverpool — with it being most likely that Benoit Badiashile and Jorrel Hato are given the starting nod.

Badiashile has only just returned from injury himself, starting his first game of the season in a 1-0 Champions League win over José Mourinho’s Benfica on Tuesday, and the Frenchman impressed.

Reports suggest that Chelsea insiders have pushed Badiashile’s case behind-the-scenes as a capable deputy to come in and play a significant role, despite being linked with a move away last summer.

The 24-year-old’s presence, amid Chelsea’s serious defensive shortage, now looks more imperative than ever, with Badiashile refusing a move away in the last window and declaring his love for the West Londoners.

The former Monaco star’s loyalty is being repaid by Maresca, who piled praise on Badiashile in his pre-Liverpool press conference.

Enzo Maresca praises Benoit Badiashile return as "good news" for Chelsea

Speaking to reporters, Chelsea’s boss confirmed that Badiashile is in fact an “important” player for them, and his return to the fold is “good news” ahead of their challenging face-off against England’s champions.

Unfortunately for Badiashile, his place in the starting eleven is under threat long-term.

According to reports, Chelsea and Maresca are in agreement that the signing of a star centre-back takes “priority” for January.

Meanwhile, it is also believed that Chelsea have reached out to Marc Guehi’s camp this week and could attempt to re-sign the Crystal Palace star for a cut-price fee in the winter.

King, Cross overpower Essex in rain-reduced win at Old Trafford

Lancashire 55 for 2 (Lamb 21) beat Essex 47 for 7 (Cross 2-9, King 2-17) by eight wickets (DLS)Ashes rivals Kate Cross and Alana King equally shared four wickets to set Lancashire Thunder up for a convincing rain-affected Vitality Blast win over Essex Eagles at Emirates Old Trafford, keeping their Finals Day hopes alive.England seamer Cross and Australia legspinner King struck twice apiece in the space of 10 legitimate balls in the sixth and seventh overs of what turned out to be an eight-over Essex innings as they slipped to 38 for six and later totalled 47 for seven.A two-hour rain delay ravaged a fixture which both sides realistically needed to win to maintain hopes of a top-three finish, and it was Thunder who claimed the five points as they reeled in a revised 52-target in six overs thanks largely to opener Emma Lamb’s 21 off 17 balls.Thunder’s fourth win in nine games – this by eight wickets on DLS – means they leapfrog Essex into fifth place and are now 11 points behind third-placed Bears with five games left. Thunder face them in a crunch clash here tomorrow afternoon.Essex, meanwhile, lost for the sixth time in nine and have a mountain to climb.Thunder, who importantly won the toss and elected to bowl first, made a fast start with the ball either side of the two-hour delay from just after 11.20am.First of all, Essex reached 24 for two after five overs.Seamer Phoebe Graham was making her first competitive appearance of the summer for Thunder, and she struck in the fourth over when she uprooted the leg-stump off Lissy MacLeod as she aimed a heave across the line.Left-arm swing bowler Tara Norris then had the other Essex opener Lauren Winfield-Hill well caught low down at cover by Ailsa Lister following a miscue in the next. Only four more balls were bowled before play was halted. Then, upon the resumption, with an eight-overs per side game now in motion, Thunder struck four times in the first 10 legitimate balls back to all but end any realistic chance Essex had of winning, the visitors crumbling to 38 for six.King had compatriot Maddie Penna well caught low down at square-leg by Lister off a full toss before getting Cordelia Griffith caught behind cutting later in the sixth over.In the seventh, Cross uprooted Jo Gardner’s off-stump and had an attacking Eva Gray caught behind.Amara Carr was then run out off the final ball of the innings. Opener Winfield-Hill was the only Essex batter to reach double figures with 13.Eve Jones set Thunder on their way in the chase with an eye-catching straight driven boundary off Esmae MacGregor’s seam before dragging Gray’s seam to midwicket on 17 – 29 for one in the fourth.England’s Lamb hit three leg-side boundaries before being run out with only four runs required. While the Red Rose host the Bears tomorrow (1pm), Essex face league leaders Surrey at The Kia Oval (midday).

Pant suffers blow to finger, Jurel called up as substitute keeper

Even after taking treatment, Pant looked in excruciating pain as he left the field

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Jul-20251:15

Manjrekar: India introduced their spinners too late

India had to call on substitute wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel after Rishabh Pant was hit on the left hand in the second session of the first day of Lord’s Test when collecting a ball down the leg side. It resulted in a long break in play during which he received attention and treatment, but Pant couldn’t carry on beyond the end of the ongoing over, the 34th of Engand’s innings.Since 2017, the regulations of the game allow for a wicketkeeper to be substituted during the match, but the substitute is not allowed to bat. Since his debut, Pant has been India’s second-highest run-getter in Test cricket. He scored two hundreds in the first Test at Headingley, becoming the first wicketkeeper to do so after Andy Flower. In the 34th over at Lord’s, Bumrah ended up slipping a ball down the leg side. Pant went for it, but was hit on the index finger. Even after taking treatment, he looked in excruciating pain as he put his gloves back on.1:12

Manjrekar: Reddy looked like India’s best seamer

Jurel, who debuted in Pant’s absence in 2023-24, averaged 63.33 with the bat in his first series in 2023-24. Once Pant was back in the side, Jurel played one Test in Australia as a batter alone, aggregating 12 runs across two innings. The series was level 1-1 after England won in Leeds and India in Birmingham. Choosing to bat first ,only for the second time at home in the Bazball era, England were 93 for 2 when Pant got injured. Joe Root and Ollie Pope were the batters in the middle. Not only was the decision at toss a departure, their scoring rate and intent was also the lowest in the Bazball era. There will be a long break between the third and the fourth Tests. An update on Pant’s status and availability during the rest of the Test was awaited.

'Standing together after a painful defeat' – Miami manager Javier Mascherano frustrated after loss to Nashville SC, forcing Game 3 in playoffs

Nashville managed to withstand the power of Inter Miami and Lionel Messi, earning a 2-1 victory on Saturday night to force a decisive third game in their MLS playoff first-round series. They took advantage of their home crowd and a strong start to contain Las Garzas, who came close to equalizing late in the match through their Argentine captain.

Getty Images SportMascherano questions referee decisions

Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano voiced his frustration after his team’s 2-1 loss to Nashville SC, criticizing the officiating and the decision not to consult VAR on a penalty conceded by goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo.

“I’d rather not comment on the refereeing,” Mascherano said. “I know how the system works, and I don’t want to give anyone an excuse to come after me. But I’m surprised they didn’t go to VAR – the tool is there, and I don’t understand why they didn’t use it.”

Looking ahead to next week’s decisive third match for a spot, Mascherano called on his players to channel their frustration.

“We have to swallow the anger and carry it with us all week so we can release it next Saturday,” he said.

The Argentine manager also said his side lacked sharpness in attack, particularly when trying to connect with star forward Lionel Messi, who once again found the net against Nashville but couldn’t prevent the loss.

“We couldn’t find Leo in good positions in the first half – we weren’t precise in the final-third, and credit to the opponent for that,” he said. “In the second half, even though they sat back, we managed to create a few more chances.”

Getty Images SportTime focus on the decisive Game 3

Despite the setback, Mascherano emphasized that the team must regroup quickly and focus on what he called the most important match of the season.

“In tough moments like this, that’s when I want to be closest to my players,” he said. “It’s about standing together after a painful defeat.”

Pep Guardiola bizarrely implies he'd never heard of Jobe Bellingham before Jude's brother joined Borussia Dortmund & explains giving Man City stars day off 24 hours before Champions League clash

Pep Guardiola has claimed he had never heard of Jobe Bellingham as the Borussia Dortmund midfielder and brother of England and Real Madrid star Jude prepares to face Manchester City in the Champions League. The younger Bellingham followed his older sibling's path by moving to Dortmund last summer from Sunderland, having also come through Birmingham City's youth ranks.

  • Jobe Bellingham enduring slow start at Dortmund

Bellingham has made a slow start to life at Dortmund following his £32 million ($41m) transfer, starting only four games across the Bundesliga and the Champions League. Bellingham’s status as a squad player rather than a regular starter has reportedly led to tensions between his parents Mark and Denise and coach Nico Kovac.

It was reported that both parents were banned from the Dortmund dressing room after arguing with Kovac over Bellingham's reduced role in the squad. And last month it was reported that Jobe had been left feeling "massively insecure" about his place in the team.

Guardiola knew little about Jobe's exploits for Sunderland

The younger Bellingham played a key role in Sunderland's promotion to the Premier League last season and has generated a huge amount of attention after following a similar, albeit less rapid, path to Jude – who has helped knock City out of the last two editions of the Champions League with Real Madrid. However, Guardiola was nonplussed when asked whether he knew much about Jobe. "No…I didn't know him back then," the coach told a press conference.

  • Guardiola explains why he gave City squad day off

The day before a Champions League match is usually a busy one for teams involved in the competition as they run through tactical plans in their training session, which is normally played out in front of reporters and television cameras for 15 minutes. But in a surprising and rare move, Guardiola cancelled training and opted to give his players the day off, with the exception of Erling Haaland who did media duties. His side will instead train on the morning of the game.

Guardiola explained that he wanted to give his players more time to recover from their 3-1 win over Bournemouth on Sunday. Dortmund had two extra days to prepare for the game, winning 1-0 at Augsburg on Friday.

The City boss said: "We will train tomorrow morning. No [it is not unusual]. I have done it a few times. Not a lot but I have done it a few times and sometimes I prefer it. It was such a demanding game against Bournemouth that I prefer today at home and tomorrow we train." On Dortmund having more time to recover, he added: "We are used to it. It is what is. Nobody is going to change the schedule. In Germany, in France, all the teams in the Champions League they try and play on Friday to get more [rest]. I don't like it but it is what it is."

Guardiola expecting easier path to knockout rounds this time

City endured a torrid time last season in the first edition of the revamped Champions League. They only scraped their way into the knockout playoffs as they finished 22nd out of 36 teams in the league phase thanks to a comeback victory over Club Brugge in their last game. The sides placed ninth to 24th qualify for the playoffs to advance to the last 16 and City were in serious danger of missing out after drawing at home to Feyenoord and losing away to Juventus, Sporting CP and eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain.

City have taken seven points from their first three games and have their next two fixtures, against Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen, at the Etihad Stadium. Guardiola believes they will have a calmer path to qualifying for the playoffs, if not directly to the last 16 by virtue of finishing in the top eight, as the squad is not depleted by injuries as it was this time last year.

"It is not about being not prepared last season," he said. "Last season we were injured. Fifty-percent of the squad were injured during months and months and especially during that period when there are a lot of games. Of course we are prepared for the format and for the old one. We will be ready. It is just last season, we had a lot of problems in terms of not having players and that was more difficult."

Imagine him & Estevao: Chelsea have "phenomenal" new Drogba on the way

Chelsea have by no means made a perfect start to the 2025/26 season, but their dramatic victory over Liverpool before the October international break ensured they stayed within a distance of the Premier League leaders.

Eyebrows were raised when BlueCo parted with Mauricio Pochettino in 2024 and replaced him with Enzo Maresca, a ‘Pep Protege’ and newbie on the scene, albeit excelling in the Championship with Leicester City. But Maresca has taken Chelsea back into the Champions League, and he won the Conference League and Club World Cup last year.

Chelsea manager EnzoMaresca

Now, sights are set on the next level, and while the Londoners hope to hit their targets and surpass them this season, with talents such as Estevao Willian cutting their teeth at Stamford Bridge, there’s more than a little cause for optimism.

Estevao is Chelsea's new star

Sometimes, you can just tell. When Cole Palmer clicked into gear two years ago, after joining from Manchester City, you could just tell. And now, the same is true for Estevao.

Described as having the potential to be a “future Ballon d’Or winner” by analyst Ben Mattinson, the Brazil international, still only 18, has already scored and assisted in the Premier League this season, averaging 1.8 dribbles per game, as per Sofascore.

His goal against Liverpool rubber-stamped his reputation as a high-level talent, but Estevao has long been regarded as a one-of-a-kind sort of up-and-comer. To put that another way, Chelsea feel they have signed a player who will dominate across England and Europe for many years to come.

A versatile and fleet-footed winger, he joined Chelsea from Palmeiras this summer after an initial £29m deal was put in place in May 2024. Estevao is representative of an impetus on signing the finest youth prospects across the globe.

Chelsea’s prudence isn’t restricted to just teenagers, though. Potential stars are found and signed ahead of time; this is a common theme in west London.

And, with Maresca still questing for a highest-class striker, fans might get excited over the reminder that such a talent has indeed been tied to Chelsea’s future, and he’s showing shades of one Didier Drogba.

Chelsea's new version of Drogba

Drogba is one of the greatest strikers in Premier League history, and the talisman throughout the richest period of sustained success in modern times at Chelsea.

The club have been dealt a mixed bag at number nine since the Ivorian left London, but in centre-forward Emmanuel Emegha, they might just find the second coming.

The 6 foot 5 Emegha, 22, will join Chelsea from partner club Strasbourg in 2026, with the Ligue 1 side’s captain rejecting interest from other top clubs to move to Stamford Bridge.

As per FBref, the Netherlands native ranks among the top 14% of strikers across Europe for goals scored, the top 3% for pass completion and the top 14% for carries into the penalty area per 90, highlighting his natural striking ability and indeed a mobility and technical skill beyond most of his positional peers.

Emegha, in fact, has been hailed by talent scout Jacek Kulig for his “simply phenomenal” finishing, and after scoring 14 goals and providing three assists across the 2024/25 campaign, he has already notched six contributions from as many matches this year.

Given that he is sharpening his tools in the French top flight and boasts a strong and dynamic physical profile, he may well arrive at Chelsea and draw comparisons to Drogba, who left Marseille for London in 2004 for a £24m fee.

Drogba is one of Chelsea’s all-time record scorers, and his big-game mentality was an iconic thing. Across nine seasons and two stints as a Blue, the 47-year-old won the full gamut. His tenacity and consistency once led an awed Jose Mourinho to describe him as a “remarkable” footballer.

Chelsea are building for the future, alright. But there’s also a sense that this new crop of acquisitions has been made with an eye on the past formulas too. Estevao evokes that X-factor emotion that the likes of Eden Hazard and more before him provided to the club’s doting fanbase.

With a towering and commanding talisman like Emegha in the centre, and Estevao running riot across the flanks, there’s no telling how dangerous Chelsea’s frontline will look in a few years time.

The likes of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap, who is nursing a muscular injury, both joined Maresca’s side this summer, and the former in particular looks a real threat.

But strength in depth has always been Chelsea’s way, and Emegha has the completeness of style in the final third to make a real difference in the fight for prizes in the Premier League and Champions League.

A pacy runner who has not quite mastered the aerial game that his long frame should enable him to flourish within, Emegha remains a work in progress. Last season in Ligue 1, for example, his 14-goal haul was also met with 25 missed big chances, emphasising the work still to be done in front of goal.

Emmanuel Emegha for Strasbourg

Alongside Estevao, though, he would surely find his shooting boots and maintain a fearsome presence in front of goal. After all, alongside his electric pace, the youngster also ranks among the top 8% of positional peers for shot-creating actions per 90 (FBref).

The jury will remain out until Emegha gets going in the Premier League; many a talented prospect has fallen by the wayside when arriving in England.

But there’s such quality there, and Emegha’s physical robustness and quality on the ball suggest he might just have the skills to replace the legendary Drogba and lead Chelsea to illustrious success.

Estevao 2.0: Chelsea let one of "the best young wingers in Europe" leave for £0

The incredible former Chelsea talent could end up being as good as Estevao.
