Harmison attacks ECB 'arrogance'

Steve Harmison has criticised the ECB for its handling of the Kevin Pietersen situation and the impersonal manner in which he was rejected for the vacant selector’s position

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Feb-2014Steve Harmison, the former England seamer who retired at the end of last season, has added to the criticism directed at the ECB this week, both for its handling of the Kevin Pietersen situation and the impersonal manner in which he was rejected for the vacant selector’s position.Harmison, who 222 wickets in 62 Tests for England, revealed in his column for north-east regional newspaper the that he had experienced the ECB’s “arrogance” first hand, after applying to join the selection panel in place of Geoff Miller. England require at least one new selector, after Miller stepped down at the end of last year.”Last month I answered an advert on the ECB’s website to apply for a job as an England selector,” Harmison wrote. “I didn’t get it. That’s fair enough, I didn’t really expect to. But it would have been nice to have been told by something other than a bog-standard automated email.”I’d like to think after playing more than 100 times for England in all forms of the game I’d at least get a personal reply, explaining why they came to their decision. But then, after everything that’s happened with Kevin Pietersen this week, they obviously don’t do explanations.”Harmison, a former team-mate of Pietersen’s, has been one of the discarded batsman’s most vocal supporters during a week in which debate about the end of his international career has raged on TV, radio and in newsprint – with Andrew Strauss the latest to voice an opinion.”I know Kev, and everything he has said about wanting to stay on until 2015, to play in the next one-day international World Cup, to get 10,000 Test runs and complete the set of home-and-away Test hundreds in South Africa, tells me he’s still hungry to play for England,” Harmison said.”KP is not unmanageable. No- one is. He will respond to a strong leader, as he did with Michael Vaughan.”Harmison also pushed for Vaughan, the 2005 Ashes-winning captain, to be considered as a candidate to succeed Andy Flower, who quit as team director last month, in the aftermath of England’s 5-0 whitewashing in Australia. Like Harmison, Vaughan has been prominent in giving his backing to Pietersen, even calling for him to be made Alastair Cook’s vice-captain.

Drummond steps down as captain

Gordon Drummond has stepped down as Scotland captain after deciding he was not able to commit enough of his time to the job and because he needs to justify his place in the side

ESPNcricinfo staff02-May-2013Gordon Drummond has stepped down as Scotland captain after deciding he was not able to commit enough of his time to the job. He said he wants to continue his playing career but needed to justify his place in the side.Drummond, who has played 28 one-day internationals and 15 Twenty20s, took over the captaincy from Gavin Hamilton in 2010. He was the only non-full-time professional cricketer in the squad for the recent tour to the UAE to play Afghanistan.Drummond said: “It’s been an unbelievable experience having had the opportunity to captain Scotland and the Saltires. I have given it my all and feel I have done my best to keep the squad moving forward.”However my professional life and playing situation mean that I feel it’s time to pass the leadership on to someone else. I want to continue to play as long as I can and will be working hard to maintain my place in the team and achieve the goals set out by this current squad.”Scotland’s head coach, Peter Steindl, added: “Gordon has led his country with distinction on every occasion he has captained Scotland. He has been a fantastic role model and excellent leader, working tirelessly to create an effective environment during a time of change.”Much of this work has been done selflessly and behind the scenes in a manner that has always matched his philosophy that the team always comes first. I am pleased that Gordon has decided to play on as he will continue to have a positive influence in the dressing room.”Scotland will play their final season of YB40 cricket this year and also have a run of internationals against Pakistan, Kenya and Australia. The matches against Kenya are particularly important as they are part of World Cricket League tournament that will provide two teams for the 2015 World Cup. Scotland are currently third behind Ireland and Netherlands.

Satisfied Dhoni plays down revenge talk

MS Dhoni has called the series win over Australia a ‘big satisfaction’ and that it wasn’t about getting revenge for the 0-4 defeat when India toured in 2011-12

Sharda Ugra24-Mar-2013At the start of the series MS Dhoni was under the hammer for being the first Indian captain in 28 years to lose a home series to England, that too after being blanked out on away series in England and Australia. After defeating Australia inside three days and completing a 4-0 sweep for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Dhoni chose to toss a few hammers towards the written press after India’s six-wicket victory, but said using the word revenge was all too “confusing.”Even after turning around the 0-4 defeat to Australia in 2011-12, ‘revenge’ was a word Dhoni had made it a point to avoid all series. “It doesn’t matter if it’s 0-4, 2-2, 2-0, 3-1… I don’t like words like revenge coming out of the series because in the very next question people talk about the spirit of the game. So revenge, spirit of the game – the vocabulary becomes too confusing.”His summary of the series was simpler, “It’s better to say that it was a good series for us. There are plenty of individuals who did really well, quite a few bowlers, quite a few batsmen… They got some exposure, they scored runs in difficult conditions.”The disadvantage of having lost the toss in all four Tests meant that India had to bat last in three of the four Tests, but had done enough with the ball in the third innings to keep the target down to reasonable numbers. The Delhi Test may have ended inside three days, but it was here that India had to chase their highest target of the series, 155 runs, on the most treacherous wicket of the four Tests.”The openers have performed really well. As I said, the conditions were quite difficult for the batsmen to score freely. Shikhar [Dhawan] batted really well in the last game, Vijay batted well over a period of time. So I feel they’ve done really well. [Cheteshwar] Pujara, I’m really impressed with Pujara. He got injured in the first innings yet he came out to open for us and score those big runs. I think overall I’m very happy with the performance of especially the newer players who’ve just got a chance to play in this series.”The defeat to England had led to a “tough time”, Dhoni said. “You learn a lot more when you’re going through a rough period compared to the good times when everything goes your way. I think individuals learnt a lot from the tough period and we were able to implement the learning in this particular series.”The key for India he said was the ability to build partnerships. “When we were batting, we said that what we want is partnerships, we don’t want individuals to score hundreds. We laid a lot of emphasis on partnerships. Ultimately, if you earn the kind of partnerships you are talking about, you’ll get individuals who will score centuries.” Six of the nine century partnerships made in the series belonged to Indian batsmen, along with M Vijay & Pujara’s 370 for the second wicket in Hyderabad and Vijay and Dhawan’s match-winning 289 in Mohali.Dhoni came out in support of coach Duncan Fletcher, saying he was “glad he is around” and that this had been the best India had performed during his tenure. “He has had a tough time… but I think he is someone who knows the game really well. His technical knowledge of batting is immense. He is there helping all the youngsters who have come into the team to groom them to do well in different conditions. Specially, I am very happy for him because he has only seen and spent tough periods with us, specially when it comes to days cricket.”

“I think he is someone who knows the game really well. His technical knowledge of batting is immense. He is there helping all the youngsters who have come into the team to groom them to do well in different conditions”Dhoni on Duncan Fletcher

The Man of the Series and top wicket-taker R Ashwin, Dhoni said, had been “facing a bit of pressure.” For Ashwin to come back “in the right frame of mind” was important. Once again he said, the criticism of Ashwin following the England had been on the similar lines about appraisals of his captaincy. “People talk a lot of different things… the same way if you have a lot of variations, when you are doing well, people talk about those variations but once you are not doing so well and not taking so many wickets, they say he is not consistent, he bowls a lot of variations.”It was important for Ashwin he said, “to back himself” but there had been no pressure on him from the side. “I think that he bowled really well. What was important is that he needs to have his own plans, his own strategies as well as going along with the team’s strategies. Being the lead bowler, he performed really well in this series. Whenever we needed an important wicket, he was always there. And if he didn’t take it, [Ravindra] Jadeja took it for us. So that really helps, if you have two or three bowlers who give us important breakthroughs at the right time.”He had said newcomer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who bowled 64 overs across eight innings and took six wickets averaging 39.83, had given India important wickets, “especially in the last Test match (Mohali) if I am not wrong… The fact that we won with 2.3 overs to spare, a lot of credit goes to the bunch of bowlers for bowling quickly so that we could generate those extra overs. If we had bowled just 14-15 overs an hour, we wouldn’t have got those extra 5-10 overs. The credit goes to them.” Bhuvneshwar would be “very effective abroad, especially given that he swings the ball both ways. We will have to wait to see but he has shown especially in the ODIs that if the conditions are slightly helpful, he can really swing the ball.”When asked about his own place at No. 6 in the batting order, Dhoni said, “about No. 6 position, Jadeja has done really well with the ball and slowly he’s getting into that thing of scoring runs. He may take a little bit of time but it’s very important that we have a youngster like him who can bowl consistently and bat a bit. So that once we go abroad, or different conditions, we can use it and still have five bowlers in the bowling line-up.”About Ajinkya Rahane, who made his Test debut for India in Delhi, Dhoni said, “I don’t think he is being considered as an opener. He will bat middle-order.”During the series, Dhoni has been far more animated on the field, in terms of ticking off slow fielders or celebrating wickets. It has marked a change from his otherwise much-celebrated ‘cool’ unemotional response to victory and defeat. Dhoni said he had “had to change a bit” because of the arrival of younger, inexperienced players in the squad. “The bowling line-up is quite the same, but the batting line-up has changed a lot, almost completely. Which means that you have to tell the youngsters what needs to be done, what went wrong and all those things. You have to change a bit.”Experienced players in the side, he said, “more often than not they know what really went wrong. So you don’t have to be vocal at times. But what’s important with the new side is that you often have to talk to them, keep telling them what needs to be done, what are the faults. All those small things that really matter. When it comes to operating on the field nothing much has really changed.”He said that it was important to get his younger side, “into a system” with good habits. “Because the habits they get used to right now are what they’ll go ahead with. I may not be there in two, three, four years’ time. But all these cricketers, they will be around for eight to 10 years. So it’s important that they start off with good habits and continue with them, so when the newer generation comes under them, they also just go ahead with the good habits.”

Ojha satisfied with Indian effort

he first day of the Bangalore Test was a perfect one for neutrals as the New Zealand had their most productive day of the series, setting up a challenge for India’s batsmen over the weekend

The first day of the Bangalore Test was a perfect one for neutrals as the underdogs New Zealand had their most productive day of the series, setting up a challenge for India’s batsmen over the weekend. New Zealand fans will be thrilled with the scoreline of 328 for 6, but India weren’t too disheartened after a day on which they were distinctly second-best.The track at the Chinnaswamy Stadium is traditionally batting friendly – the last time a team batting first didn’t make 400 was back in 2001 when England made 336 – and left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha was confident India could match any score New Zealand put up. “The way things are going it’s a good wicket to bat,” he said after the first day’s play. “The kind of batting we have, I am quite confident we can put up a good score.”India could have eroded New Zealand’s advantage had they managed to prise apart a quick 82-run stand for the seventh wicket between Kruger van Wyk and Doug Bracewell in the third session, but Ojha was satisfied with India’s bowling performance. “It was a good first-day wicket and in this kind of surface, they were trying to be aggressive. I think that is what their game plan was. Ross [Taylor] played quite well too. Nevertheless, we picked up six wickets today.”New Zealand maintained a punishing run-rate through much of the day, picking on fast bowler Umesh Yadav in particular. Yadav was generally either too short or too full, gifting boundary-balls in nearly every over as he was taken for almost six an over. The rest of the attack too looked clueless during the hour after lunch when Taylor and Daniel Flynn were scoring at seven an over. Ojha, though, was adamant the bowling didn’t lack discipline.”Zak [Zaheer Khan] bowled superbly in his first spell,” he said. “There was one catch dropped (Martin Guptill was put down by Virat Kohli at third slip in the 10th over), and if that had been taken then it would have been a different story as at that time the pitch was doing a bit. I think Ash [R Ashwin] and Umesh bowled well too. Taking six wickets on this kind of a wicket, which is not doing much, was a good effort.”While the consensus was that it was a bat-first surface, the quicks were expected to get some assistance in the first hour before the track eased out. To everyone’s surprise, though, MS Dhoni decided to open the bowling with Ojha, the first time India have started an innings with a specialist spinner. Ojha didn’t pick up any wickets with the new ball, but explained the thinking behind the unexpected move. “There was some moisture on the wicket and sometime when there is moisture the ball grips, so we wanted to make use of that.”New Zealand opener Guptill was nearly dismissed by Ojha in the third over, when an edge flew past slip, after which he decided to attack the spinner. “I was a little bit surprised (when Ojha opened the bowling),” Guptill said. “We got some interesting balls early on but we were able to get over it.”While his 53 and Taylor’s blistering century have set New Zealand on course for a competitive total, Guptill was aware his side still had plenty to do. “We have to keep up the positive intent. If we put 400-450 on the board and attack them then it’s going to put some pressure on India,” he said. “There is a bit of swing and seam on this wicket and if we can pick up a few wickets early on, it’ll be great.”Ahead of the Test, New Zealand captain Taylor had spoken about how one bad session is enough to ruin a Test; the weekend will show whether his side can sustain their performance after a strong start.

Liddle skittles Middlesex to clinch win

Middlesex fell short in pursuit of Sussex’s 143 for 8 as Chris Liddle’s five-wicket haul helped the visitors to victory

ScorecardChris Liddle took three wickets in four balls on his way to career-best T20 figures•Getty ImagesChris Liddle bowled a sensational penultimate over to help Sussex clinch an 11-run victory over Middlesex at Lord’s. Liddle took three wickets in four balls to finish with career-best figures of 5 for 17 and wreck Middlesex’s hopes of chasing down Sussex’s total of 143 for 8.Toby Roland-Jones and Gareth Berg had put Sussex in trouble but they fought back from 26 for 3 to post a competitive total thanks to forties from Murray Goodwin and Scott Styris.Sussex made a terrible start after winning the toss and lost Luke Wright, Matt Machan and Chris Nash inside the opening six overs. Steven Crook had Wright caught at the wicket while Machan lobbed a simple catch off the same bowler to mid-off as Crook finished with figures of 2 for 29.Joe Gatting and Goodwin began the fightback by putting on 30 in 21 balls before Tom Smith beat a tentative defensive prod to bowl Gatting for 11. Goodwin has been in woeful form this season but came to Sussex’s rescue by adding 56 with Scott Styris before being bowled by Roland-Jones.Styris made the most of being dropped by Dawid Malan on 25 but fell just short of his half-century when he hit Roland-Jones straight to Berg at extra cover on 48. Sussex’s innings tailed off after that as they limped to 143 for 8, with Berg picking up the wickets of Ben Brown and Mike Yardy in the final over.Liddle made the initial breakthrough by having Joe Denly caught at long-off while Paul Stirling also went cheaply. Malan top-scored with 38 before he picked out Goodwin on the boundary off the bowling of Will Beer.Berg and Neil Dexter put on 53 for the fourth wicket before Liddle returned to end their partnership by fooling Berg with a slower ball he lobbed straight to point for 23. Middlesex still looked favourites until Liddle produced fireworks in the penultimate over by removing Dexter (36), John Simpson and Chris Rogers.

ECB defer decision on Morgan Review

The ECB has bowed to pressure within the county game by deferring a decision on the Morgan Review and instead has decided to conduct further research throughout the 2012 season into the future of professional cricket in England.Growing opposition to Morgan’s recommendations, which included a reduction in championship matches from 16 to 14, a return to 50-over cricket and 14 Twenty20 matches, left the ECB Board unable to adopt a report that had been months in the making.County chief executives, coaches and the Professional Cricketers’ Association had all lobbied the ECB in the belief that in his urge for compromise Morgan, a former chairman of ECB and ICC, had failed to provide an inspirational blueprint for the game.Morgan did receive more support for his conclusion that a more concerted approach must be developed among the ECB and the 18 counties towards the future financing of the game. Central marketing strategies will be strengthened.Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman, said: “Cricket has a unique opportunity to capitalise on its enviable financial strength from recently secured long term commercial partnerships.”Whilst many of the recommendations will be implemented immediately, it is important that thorough consumer research and financial analysis is carried out on the detailed strategy to ensure that we have a balanced domestic playing programme which suits the lifestyles of the modern consumer and allows for the production of outstanding players with international potential participating in vibrant domestic competitions.”Morgan achieved that rarest of things in county cricket: unanimity of sorts. The PCA, the vast majority of the county chief executives, coaches and chairmen, the ECB’s cricket committee and, according to unofficial on-line polls, the majority of spectators, all expressed their reservations over Morgan’s recommendations. The recurring theme of their issue with the report is the reduction in the championship programme and the subsequent compromise to the integrity of the competition. That left the board with few options. While they were loathe to be seen to U-turn on such a key issue, they were also reluctant to so blatantly ignore the views of all the parties. The solution — to defer a final decision pending more consultation – could almost be an ECB catchphrase. But the ECB board, which had already approved the report in principle and had vowed not to tinker around the edges, had to retreat or run the risk of unrest around the counties. Scrapping the report at this stage will be an embarrassment for Morgan, one of cricket’s leading administrators, who claimed to have spoken to 300 people before drawing up his findings.David Collier, the ECB’s chief executive, and the newly-appointed managing director of the professional game, Gordon Hollins, have now been charged by the Board with producing “a robust financial plan to ensure the long term sustainability of the game and its stakeholders from grassroots cricket to the Test match arena.”Edited by David Hopps
