'It's a dream come true' – Pattinson

James Pattinson, the Australia fast bowler, has described his first Boxing Day Test as “a dream come true” after he won the Man-of-the-Match award in the 122-run victory over India

Brydon Coverdale at the MCG29-Dec-2011James Pattinson, the Australia fast bowler, has described his first Boxing Day Test as “a dream come true” after he won the Man-of-the-Match award in the 122-run victory over India. Pattinson, 21, was born and raised in Melbourne and regularly attended MCG Tests with his family, and he had plenty of support from his hometown crowd as he collected match figures of 6 for 108.In doing so, he compiled an impressive list of victims, including Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and MS Dhoni, although he did not manage to claim the prize wicket of Sachin Tendulkar. Asked if his first Boxing Day Test was everything he expected it to be, Pattinson said “and more”.”For me it’s a dream come true to play cricket for Australia,” Pattinson said. “To be out there on Boxing Day and against India, with the batting line-up … I know Sachin … I wasn’t even born when he started playing cricket. To go out there and bowl against him and have some success against their batsmen is just unbelievable. To get a win is even better.”Pattinson showed plenty of aggression against India, who came in to the match with a line-up boasting 53,560 Test runs, an all-time record for a team’s aggregate. He was no-balled for bowling three bouncers in an over during India’s second innings, and although he didn’t pick up a wicket with a bouncer, it proved an effective way to keep the batsmen guessing.”[It was] not really a conscious effort, it’s just the way I play cricket,” Pattinson said. “It’s the way I’ve been brought up. I like to attack, I like to go out there and do my own stuff. It’s not a conscious effort; it’s just the way I play.”It wasn’t just Pattinson’s wickets that contributed to Australia’s victory. In the first innings, he finished unbeaten on 18 and in the second he was not out on 37, one of only four men to reach double figures. In that knock he played some fine strokes, including a couple of searing drives past mid-off against the bowling of Umesh Yadav. His 43-run partnership with Ben Hilfenhaus for the final wicket was vital, as it took India’s target from less than 250 to a not-so-manageable 292. Only once in his five Test innings has he failed to reach double figures, and he knew that his runs at the end of Australia’s batting performance could have been match-deciding.”Nowadays the way cricket is going, you need to be able to bat towards the end. You’ve seen so many valuable partnerships from the last two in many games of cricket. It’s something that I’ve put a big emphasis on in the nets.”It does help. It does put the game back in our favour and the opening batsmen didn’t want to be stuck out there too much longer, which they were. So it was big for us and it’s just good that I can help out with the bat.”

Swann 'delighted' to lead England

Graeme Swann will captain England in the two-match Twenty20 series against West Indies later this month

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Sep-2011Graeme Swann has said he is “delighted” at the prospect of captaining England in the two-match Twenty20 series against West Indies later this month, in the absence of Stuart Broad and Eoin Morgan.Broad, the regular Twenty20 captain who began his reign earlier this season against Sri Lanka, was ruled out of the remainder of England’s home season, as well as the five-match ODI series in India next month, after sustaining a muscle tear to his right shoulder in the fourth ODI against India at Lord’s. Morgan, Broad’s vice-captain, was earlier ruled out until January with his own shoulder problem. With Kevin Pietersen continuing his rest period, Swann was one of the few viable options within the current Twenty20 set-up. The other route would have been to give the job to Alastair Cook, the ODI captain, but that would have disrupted the top order which Andy Flower is trying to form ahead of England’s defence of their World Twenty20 title in Sri Lanka next September.”I’m obviously delighted,” Swann said. “I’d looked at the [likely] squad and thought: ‘I might have a chance.’ It’s a case of being fairly mature in the changing room, because we’ve got a few young guys who’ve not played before and need to have at least a semi-sensible role model to look up to.”Two uncapped players – Yorkshire’s Jonathan Bairstow and Hampshire’s Danny Briggs – have been included in the 14-man squad. There is also a Twenty20 recall for James Anderson who hasn’t played the shortest format for England since November 2009.”Graeme Swann is a highly respected member of the England side and his experience and leadership qualities will be invaluable when he leads a young England team next week – a role he is very much looking forward to,” Geoff Miller, the national selector, said.Such high praise from the ECB hierarchy would have seemed a world away at the start of Swann’s international career, when his care-free attitude led to him being mistrusted by his first England coach, Duncan Fletcher, and banished from the set-up for seven long years.Since his recall, however, his quick-witted outlook on life has become an integral factor in England’s squad mentality. Though he promised that captaincy would not cramp his exuberant style completely, he admitted that the jokes would “stop to a certain extent”.”I’ve captained every game I’ve played, in my head, throughout my entire career,” he added. “So I’ll just do that a bit more vocally when I’m on the field.”Cook, who admitted his disappointment at once again being overlooked for the Twenty20 squad, backed Swann to lead from the front in his brief opportunity to take command. “The enthusiasm he has for the game will run off on peoplecompletely,” he said. “He just loves it. I think he will do well.”He definitely thinks about the game when he is bowling,” added Cook. “He’s always thinking about what the batsman will do. He’s always thought like a captain when he bowls so I think it’ll be quite easy for him. I don’t know if he’ll be orthodox or adventurous. But that’s his character, so if he’s going to stay natural…”Of the squad in general, Miller said: “We have once again selected a blend of experienced international performers along with exciting young players with a great deal of talent. We have had a successful summer to date and will be looking to continue our form during the Twenty20 series against West Indies and finish the summer with two strong performances.”We have selected ten of the players who were involved in last month’s Twenty20 victory over India while the injuries to Stuart Broad and Eoin Morgan and the continued period of rest for Kevin Pietersen means we bring four players into the squad; James Anderson, Jonathan Bairstow, Scott Borthwick and Danny Briggs.”Borthwick made his international debut against Ireland, in Dublin, last month while Bairstow was in that squad but didn’t make the final XI. There are four spinners in the party which is a clear indication that the selectors are using the two matches against West Indies as a chance to look ahead at their options for the World Twenty20.Squad Graeme Swann (capt), James Anderson, Jonathan Bairstow, Ravi Bopara, Scott Borthwick, Tim Bresnan, Danny Briggs, Jos Buttler, Jade Dernbach, Steven Finn, Alex Hales, Craig Kieswetter (wk), Samit Patel, Ben Stokes.

Slovenia aim for improved performance

Mark Oman believes the ICC European Division 3 Championship will allow Slovenia to show how far its cricket structures have developed

ESPNcricinfo staff11-May-2011It has been six years since Slovenia last hosted a European tournament, but former captain Mark Oman believes the ICC European Division 3 Championship will allow the country to show how far its cricket structures have developed, and also provide a chance to atone for their winless run at the Division Four tournament in Cyprus two years ago.”It’s great coverage to bring the tournament to Slovenia, it helps spread the word across the country about the game,” said Oman. “We have eleven Slovenia born players in our squad which just shows the good work that is being done and the more people that are getting involved.”We have a good standard and it is a good reflection, the Valburga [Cricket Ground] venue is one we have used in cricket coaching courses for the past eight years and shows the versatility we have here.”Slovenia have been an Affiliate member of the ICC since 2005, but a winning finish in this tournament would take them to the Division Two Championship in Belgium in June and one step further towards the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in 2012. That dream is a long way off, but Oman stressed that even the faint possibility gave the players a goal to work towards.”I think this pathway is a fantastic opportunity for any Affiliate and Associate members within the ICC to make their way into a global qualifier and even more so an ICC World Twenty20. It gives a great incentive to know the opportunities that are there and personally to have the chance to achieve an ambition to be involved at the top level of this game is great for all players.”Oman, who has handed the leadership reins over to batsman Tom Furness, has been training in his native Australia but there rest of the team have been in camp in Slovenia to prepare for the important competition. “The teams have been training here in Slovenia, with a training programme focused on doing well in this tournament. They have been training twice a week, had a set of Twenty20 friendly games and worked really hard on their fitness, with Tom Furness really pushing the squad.”For me personally, I have spent my training time away from the team, playing cricket back in Australia. This has given me great preparation to be able to play outdoor cricket for some time and arrive back in Slovenia to join up with guys a couple of weeks ago.”We are definitely aiming to improve on our performance from 2009. We had a very young squad back then. We are far more experienced and are a lot stronger, and also playing at home should have a slight benefit, so hopefully we can perform the way we know we can.”

Spurs: Paratici handed De Vrij boost

Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a huge boost in their bid to bring Stefan de Vrij to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Football Insider, who claim that a recruitment source has revealed that Inter Milan have informed the centre-back he will be free to leave San Siro this summer for a figure in the region of £15m.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

The report goes on to state that the Serie A side are yet to open new contract talks with the Netherlands international – whose current deal expires in the summer of 2023 – and are now willing to cash in on the 30-year-old for a cut-price fee, with Tottenham, Newcastle United and Aston Villa all thought to be keen.

Paratici must move

Considering the fact that De Vrij previously commanded an asking price of £40m, in addition to it being reported that Spurs are in the market for a left sided-centre-back and Antonio Conte being known to be a huge fan of the defender after working together in Italy, it would appear as if Fabio Paratici simply must make a move for the Dutchman this summer.

Indeed, over his 32 Serie A appearances under the management of Conte last season, the £31.5m-rated centre-back highly impressed in the Nerazzurri’s title-winning campaign, helping his side keep 11 clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.3 interceptions, 0.9 tackles, 2.9 clearances and winning 3.3 duels – at a success rate of 60% – per game.

These metrics saw the £116k-per-week left-footer who former Lazio defender Mauricio dubbed a “monster” average a very respectable SofaScore match rating of 7.03, ranking him as Inter’s tenth-best performer in the league.

As such, taking into account his undoubted ability, Spurs’ rather desperate need for a new left-sided centre-back and an asking price that is under half of his current Transfermarkt valuation, it would appear a very wise move for Paratici to launch an offensive for the 30-year-old in the coming months – as signing De Vrij for just £15m would certainly be something of a bargain.

Indians set for record payday

The Indian players in the IPL auction could be set for a bumper payday as there is far more overseas talent for fewer slots and vice versa

Sharda Ugra and Nagraj Gollapudi07-Jan-2011Here’s the good news: there is a total of $72.3m dollars floating around for cricketers from all over the globe at the IPL’s bumper auction in Bangalore’s Royal Gardenia hotel this weekend. Most of it, though, will be spent on Indian players, with the big-ticket overseas players discovering that after three seasons of big spending, their big tickets have expired. The reason: there are many more overseas players up for auction than their Indian counterparts. Or, to put it another way, far more overseas talent for fewer slots and vice versa. The 2011 auction has 305 overseas cricketers for the 95 foreign slots available among the ten teams, as opposed to 48 Indians in the auction for what in reality are a minimum of 200 places. As in conventional economics, the IPL’s law of demand and supply dictates that demand will fix its own price.”If you are looking for an allrounder from among the foreign players,” one franchise official said, “you know if you have ten options and you don’t get the first nine, you will get the tenth, who will still be a player of quality. That is not what is happening with the Indians. The sheer scarcity of Indian talent will drive values and prices very high.”The auction is likely to indicate how franchises will conduct their business in the second phase of the IPL, where team numbers are up from eight to 10 and the schedule changes to a 74-match calendar with playoffs.Steve Rixon, the former Australia wicketkeeper now on the Chennai Super Kings support staff, told ESPNcricinfo that the franchises at this auction would be a “little smarter” than the previous one, and make their choices very carefully over “who they are selecting, why they are selecting and whether they fit into the bigger picture.”Given the IPL’s lopsided numbers, there is now a slim chance of overseas players picking up the highest IPL contract, like the $1.55m deal handed out to both Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff in 2009. It is in fact Yusuf Pathan and Yuvraj Singh who could well be in a close contest for the weekend’s biggest wage slip, because they are both Indian and impact players.Nor will it be a surprise if some of the best-known international names land far smaller pay cheques than a range of players spanning Gautam Gambhir, Rohit Sharma, Robin Uthappa and Saurabh Tiwary. The grapevine suggests that most franchises will not fill their quota of ten overseas signings. The biggest lesson from the past three seasons of the IPL, a franchise executive said, was that, “ten foreign players are too many… you waste them. Sometimes you have to leave a quality player on a bench. It’s not good for him, not good for you. The optimum number is about eight. It gives you enough options: to play an extra bowler, someone may be injured or unavailable.”The auction’s global graph, said another official, would move east and south. “Franchises will spend more money on Indian players followed by the Sri Lankans and South Africans. Then the Australians, because of availability. That is where the England players will be hurt – usually their window is too small for teams to consider.” Some overseas players will, of course, command high prices. These will be men of express pace, like Dale Steyn or Shaun Tait, who can blow open games, or batsmen who can do the same, like Chris Gayle or David Warner. Or a big name whose purse will come with the promise that he can win at least four or five games on his own and command star value. Step forward Muttiah Muralitharan and Jacques Kallis. The most unpredictable buys in the auction could well come from the new franchises, like the faction-ridden Kochi or Sahara-owned Pune, who find the entire exercise a mental and financial challenge – more so because 12 star players have already been retained. A Chennai franchise insider said the two new teams would be looking for that one star buy. Their plans, he believed, would be similar to Chennai’s in 2008. “Unlike most teams, Chennai didn’t have an icon player. Chennai went all out to get MS Dhoni. This time again there is expected to be a mad rush for such a player who could add the star value and the brand image to the franchise… at least one such player who could be their captain.”However one of the officials of a new franchise said his side were left with “not so many” options. “The top 10 players in the world are gone. If you take Mumbai and Chennai, they have been allowed to retain players who are easily worth around $6 million.” They would do well to heed Delhi’s advice: that the players with the biggest price tags aren’t the only ones to pursue. Due to the Twenty20 format, a Delhi insider said, it doesn’t make sense to spend money beyond a certain level on a player. “We have seen that several high-value players have not delivered in games”. The brevity and speed of the game, he said, gives a less-skilled player a “better chance of delivering in a big T20 game… just like there is far less chance of a lesser player coming through in a tough Test match situation. That is the nature of the beast.”The best squad, then, is a mix of “allrounders and impact players”. Or, as Rixon put it, players who fit the teams’ macro-mould. “If bowling is your strength, you need strong upper-order batting. You need players who can bowl and bat…” Teams would also be on the lookout for the decision-makers who can deliver. “That is where the older heads have a role to play and that can only come from experience. That is why there are still older players on the circuit.” That is why Anil Kumble will be missed. The presence of a Tait or a Steyn, and therefore the demand for them, will be even more vital and valuable than that of a star batsman. Even over four overs, their pace and ability can ask questions of the bits and pieces players (who will proliferate in the IPL) that will likely be left unanswered.Team like Kings XI Punjab, who have had three rough and controversial years followed by three months of legal wrangling with the BCCI, will be looking for stability. A Punjab spokesman said the franchise wants players, “who perform and not only those who command large amounts of money. It will be performance that counts and not only money.”It’s the IPL so money will count. It will walk and strut and it will talk. But at the auction, it is going to speak a language not of glamour or glitz, but that of business and bottom lines. The $74.3m are, for the better part, going to have to be judiciously spent.

Johnson plans short-ball attack for Strauss

Mitchell Johnson will attack Andrew Strauss with the short ball in an effort to unsettle England’s captain on the bouncy Gabba surface during the first Test

Peter English22-Nov-2010Mitchell Johnson will attack Andrew Strauss with the short ball in an effort to unsettle England’s captain on the bouncy Gabba surface during the first Test. Australia have always worked on the philosophy that if you hurt the leader, the rest of the side will suffer, and Johnson has spotted what he thinks is a weakness.”I’ve had a bit of a look at the footage at him under the short ball,” Johnson said. “He can play one that’s about chest height but if you really get it right on the money, he really does struggle with it. You’ve got to get your bouncer high to him. You’ve got to be that aggressive bowler tohim.”Strauss, who was the leading run-scorer in the 2009 Ashes, was dismissed twice attempting the pull and hook shots at the Gabba four years ago, the first mistakes in a forgettable visit. Andrew Flintoff was the captain for the whitewash, but this time Strauss has to keep both his game and his team in order.”They really look up to their captain Strauss and that’s someone we need to target,” Johnson said. “As their captain, if you can get him to crumble, their players start thinking the same way and start thinking negatively, so he’s someone we’re going after.”Peter Siddle, who is fighting to make the XI, also spoke of the importance of restricting Strauss. “The captain walking out first is always a good target and one you want to challenge first up,” he said. “He was the leading run-scorer last series; we definitely want to get him as soon aspossible.”While England won the Ashes 2-1 in 2009 and have since beaten Bangladesh twice and Pakistan, Siddle does not believe Strauss’s men are any better. “I don’t think they’ve improved at all,” Siddle said. “Obviously they’ve got Steven Finn who has come in, but that’s about the only thing that’schanged.”They haven’t been scoring a mountain of runs, so I don’t think there’s too much to worry about there. It’s the same team we played over there and they’re in our conditions now and it’s definitely going to be a lot tougher for them.”

PCB finally sends Lahore report to ICC

Seventeen months after the March 2009 terror attack on the Sri Lanka team in Lahore, the PCB has finally sent the judicial inquiry report on the incident to the ICC, after getting the approval of the Punjab Government.”The board sent the report [on Lahore terror incident] to the ICC about one month ago after seeking approval of the Punjab government,” PCB chairman Ijaz Butt told . “As the Punjab government had sent a copy of the judicial inquiry report to the PCB with the instruction to keep it confidential, we were not in a position to forward the report to the ICC initially. But soon after the Punjab government allowed us, the PCB dispatched the report to the international body.”An ICC spokesperson confirmed to Cricinfo that the report was received on August 3. “It is a confidential report and the ICC will not make any comments on it,” the spokesperson told Cricinfo. On March 3 last year, the bus in which the Sri Lanka side was travelling to the Gaddafi Stadium was attacked by terrorists. Eight policemen lost their lives, while several others were injured, including some of the Sri Lanka players.Since the attack, no international cricket has been played Pakistan, and only two international events in any sport have taken place in the country – the Asia Cup baseball qualifiers in Islamabad and an international boxing tournament in Karachi. The 600-page report was put together by Lahore High Court Justice Shabbar Raza Rizvi, who questioned a number of security officials, as well as Butt, former PCB COO Saleem Altaf and the present COO Wasim Bari, who was the human resource director at the time. The report comes down heavily on the weaknesses in the security arrangements made by the Punjab government, which was running under governor’s rule at the time.Former ICC president Ehsan Mani recently criticised the PCB for taking so long to submit the report to the ICC, whose own security task force is engaged in finding ways to bring international cricket back to Pakistan.

Italy, Isle of Man make it two in two

Hosts Isle of Man and Italy moved to the top of their respective groups with their second successive victories of the tournament

Cricinfo staff28-Jul-2010Hosts Isle of Man registered their second win in as many games, with an authoritative 93-run win against Switzerland in Castletown. Openers Adam McAuley and Carl Wagstaffe were once again the architects for a good score, with a stand of 58 before the former was run out. Midhun Sandhya struck thrice in the middle overs, but had little impact on Ryan Burns who smashed 81 off 68 balls to take his side to 204 in the 40 overs. Captain Daniel Hawke then scuppered Switzerland’s hopes with a stifling spell of 3 for 9 in six overs. Harry Vines struck 41 as the innings meandered to 111 for 9.Italy’s bowlers set up an easy 60-run win against France in Castletown to take their side to the top of their group. Roshendra Abeywickrama kick-started Italy’s innings with 43 off 28 balls, but the rest of his side’s batsmen could not sustain the effort. Thomas Liddiard picked 4 for 46 in seven overs as Italy were bowled out for 155. Harpreet Singh then turned the tables on France with an incisive spell where he picked 4 for 15. France’s final score of 95 was an improvement of sorts, given they were 29 for 6 at one stage.Belgium brushed aside Greece’s challenge in quick time, racing to an eight-wicket win in a game that lasted under 40 overs in Tromode. Naman Parikh scythed through the Greek batting line-up with a six-wicket haul. Fraser McRae helped himself to three wickets as well, as Greece were shot out for 66. Things could have been much worse if not for Ioannis Vasilas and Georgio Kantas who scored 19 apiece. McRae followed it up with an unbeaten 45 as Belgium crossed the line in 16.1 overs.Germany ran Austria close in Crosby before losing by six runs in a tight encounter. Ciju Puthupally scored a patient 63 off 101 balls with only two boundaries as Austria laboured to 157 in their 40 overs. Jaskaran Singh and Tushar Marwaha picked three wickets each. Germany’s chase followed a similar template with opener Jaskaran scoring 55 off 83 balls, but without adequate support. Christoph Moslinger, Puthupally and Sohaib Farooq grabbed two wickets each as Germany lost one wicket too many, the last man departing off the penultimate ball with seven runs still required.
